Bei Olivia Röllin trifft ein Winzer und Unternehmer auf eine Neurobiologin, die sich mit Stressbewältigung auskennt. Andrea Davaz (61) ist Winzer, Unternehmer und Familienmensch – verwurzelt in der Bündner Herrschaft. Aufgewachsen auf einem kleinen Bauernhof in Fläsch, übernahm er früh Verantwortung und lernte, was Anpacken heisst. Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Önologen baute er gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder das Familienweingut aus, gründete die Weinhandlung von Salis und rettete später die Traditionsmarke Rimuss vor dem Aus. Heute führt er mit seinen Kindern die Davaz-Gruppe, die auf Nachhaltigkeit und Biodiversität setzt. Auch nach Rückschlägen ist ihm sein christlicher Glaube geblieben – als Kraftquelle und Kompass. Ariane Orosz (44) wuchs in Oberengstringen auf – als Tochter ungarischer Eltern, die nach ihrer Flucht in der Schweiz ein neues Leben aufbauten. Zuhause sprach man Ungarisch, im Kindergarten verstand sie die anderen Kinder zunächst kaum. Als schüchternes Kind beschäftigte sie sich viel mit sich selbst. Heute versucht sie zu verstehen, das im Inneren von Menschen vor sich geht. Sie studierte Neurobiologie und arbeitete mehrere Jahre am Sanatorium Kilchberg, wo sie Gruppen zu Stressbewältigung leitete. Der Heimplatz in Zürich soll attraktiver werden. Der Stadtrat plant mehr Bäume, Sitzplätze, einen Brunnen und sichere Velowege. Dafür soll ein Tramhalt verlegt und der Autoverkehr eingeschränkt werden. Im Stadtparlament gab es Kritik von allen Seiten. Wenn die Temperaturen klettern, geraten unsere Städte unter Druck. Es war 33 Grad heiss, als wir uns für diese Episode von "Die Natur und die Stadt" im Limmattal trafen. Doch statt über das Problem zu klagen, haben wir uns ein zukunftsweisendes Demonstrationsprojekt angeschaut: die hängenden Gärten von Dietikon. An einem Veloparkhaus direkt beim Bahnhof wurde ein einzigartiges Experiment gestartet. Das Ziel: die Öffentlichkeit, aber auch Immobilieninvestoren und Behörden zu überzeugen, dass Vertikalbegrünung die Zukunft unserer Städte mit-gestaltet. Gemeinsam mit Partnern wie der Stadt Dietikon oder der ZHAW hat der Clean Tech Hub unter der Leitung von Alexander Carisch dieses Projekt ins Leben gerufen. Dabei werden drei verschiedene Begrünungssysteme der drei Firmen Gabs, Wildwall und Skygardens auf ihre Effektivität getestet. Das letztgenannte System stammt von Fabian Meiers Firma, die einen natürlichen und "wilden" Ansatz verfolgt hat. Seine Fassadenbegrünung setzt nicht nur auf Ästhetik, sondern auch auf Nutzen: Hier wachsen sogar essbare Pflanzen wie Erdbeeren. Wie mein Interviewgast Adrian Burri von der ZHAW erklärt, geht es in den Diskussionen heute kaum noch um das Ob der Stadtbegrünung. Auch in der Schweiz werden jährlich Wörter des Jahres gekürt – und zwar in jeder der vier Landessprachen. Aber wie läuft so eine Suche überhaupt ab, was beachtet man dabei und gibt es ein Schweizer Jugendwort des Jahres? In dieser Folge spricht die Journalistin Olivia Ruffiner mit der Sprachwissenschaftlerin Marlies Whitehouse. Künstliche Intelligenz steckt längst in unserem Alltag, doch sie hat einen versteckten Preis: Der Energieverbrauch von KI-Anwendungen ist enorm und oft intransparent. Gleichzeitig könnte KI helfen, Ressourcen effizienter zu nutzen und CO₂-Emissionen zu senken. Wir haben mit Dr. Ricardo Chavarriaga, Leitung der Responsible AI Innovation Group am Centre for Artificial Intelligence der ZHAW über dieses Spannungsfeld gesprochen.

Das Kantonsspital Schaffhausen braucht dringend Geld für den geplanten Neubau. Der Kanton möchte sich mit 130 Millionen Franken daran beteiligen. Diesen Betrag hat das Kantonsparlament heute bewilligt. Das letzte Wort hat aber die Stimmbevölkerung. Weitere Themen: · Der Zürcher Kantonsrat entscheidet sich gegen die Volksinitiative "Mehr bezahlbare Wohnungen im Kanton Zürich". Dieser will den Gemeinden das Vorkaufsrecht für Grungstücke ermöglichen. Der Kantonsrat hat sich jedoch für den Gegenvorschlag entschieden, welcher vorsieht, 360 Mio. Franken in den Bau von günstigen Wohnungen zu investieren. · Die Stadtzürcher Seeüberquerung findet wie geplant am Mittwoch, den 2. juli statt. Das Anmeldefenster wurde heute Mittag geöffnet. · Eine neue Studie der ZHAW zeigt, dass Bibliotheken nicht nur das Wissen der Nutzerinnen und Nutzer steigern, sondern auch einen positiven Einfluss auf das allgemeine Wohlbefinden und die Kreativität haben.

Waldbaden ist eine etablierte Praxis aus Japan, die auch hierzulande Fuss fasst. Dabei spaziert man langsam und achtsam durch den Wald. Alle Sinne werden aktiviert. Waldbaden soll Stress reduzieren und sich positiv auf die menschliche Gesundheit auswirken. An der ZHAW wird geforscht, ob das stimmt. Shinrin Yoku – so heisst das Waldbaden auf Japanisch – ist in Japan Bestandteil des Gesundheitssystems. Dort kann Shinrin Yoku Menschen, die unter stressbedingten Erkrankungen leiden, ärztlich verschrieben werden. Auch in der Schweiz erforschen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler die Wirkung des Waldes auf den Körper; und zwar mit dem Ziel, Waldbaden auch hier in das Gesundheitssystem zu integrieren. Eine dieser Forschenden ist Hortikultur-Ingenieurin Martina Föhn von der ZHAW. In Perspektiven spricht sie über ihre Forschung. Während Safety auf über ein Jahrhundert Erfahrung zurückgreifen kann, ist Security eine im Vergleich neue Disziplin. Aber könnte Security von Safety lernen? Denis startete seine Karriere früh: Bereits mit 17 Jahren begann er in der IT zu arbeiten, absolvierte eine Informatik-Mittelschule und entschied sich während seines Studiums an der ZHAW, sein eigenes Unternehmen zu gründen. Zu Beginn verlief seine Gründung eher schleppend – acht Monate lang hatte er keinen einzigen Auftrag. Doch dann folgte der Durchbruch mit zwei Grossaufträgen innerhalb einer Woche, darunter eine Plattform für das Gurtenfestival, die später als Basis für ein System zur Covid-Testabwicklung diente. Synerma wickelte in dieser Zeit sagenhafte 1,9 Millionen Tests ab.

Nach wie vor wird im Bundeshaus um das Budget gerungen. Klar ist, dass die Armee eine halbe Milliarde Franken mehr erhält. Unklar ist jedoch noch immer, wieviel dafür etwa bei der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit gespart werden soll. Nun liegt im Nationalrat ein neuer Vorschlag auf dem Tisch. Weitere Themen: Viele Erwachsene haben Mühe beim Lesen oder Rechnen. Das zeigt die neuste Studie der Organisation für wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit. Auch die Medienkompetenz lässt zu wünschen übrig. Das hat Folgen, sagt Guido Keel von der ZHAW. Am Mittwoch wird der Fussballweltverband FIFA zwei weitere Weltmeisterschaften vergeben. Sowohl für die Jahre 2030 als auch für 2034 gibt es nur je eine Kandidatur. So geht die WM 2034 nach Saudi-Arabien. Der Wüstenstaat investiert viel Geld, um sich als neue Sportmacht zu etablieren.

He holds a BSc in Business Management from ZHAW, and previously co-founded the bakery Leibacher Biber-Manufaktur AG in 2010 with his siblings, before starting Eggfield in 2020. During his time at his family bakery, Silvan realized the impact that the use of animal products has on CO2 emissions. While there were well-known alternatives to dairy products, this was not the case for eggs, which motivated Silvan to search for a solution. He found it in History: back in WW2, soldiers were already using aquafaba (which is the water used for boiling chickpeas) as an egg substitute.  Together with his food engineer co-founder, Silvan decided to build Eggfield, a company selling clean label egg alternatives based on aquafaba to other companies, which then use them to bake cakes or create sauces. They are not (at least for the moment) interested in going B2C or selling alternatives to scrambled or boiled eggs.                                       Eggfield is currently fundraising through the Swisspreneur Syndicate. Die rechtsextreme Gruppe «Junge Tat» steht derzeit in den Schlagzeilen, wegen Verbindungen zur Jungen SVP Schweiz. Ein heute veröffentlichter Diskriminierungsbericht bezeichnet die «Junge Tat»als dominierende Organisation in der rechtsextremen Szene in der Schweiz.  Der Extremismus-Forscher Dirk Baier von der ZHAW und der Universität Zürich erklärt, warum die «Junge Tat» in Fachkreisen klar als rechtextrem eingestuft wird. Zürich ist die smarteste Stadt der Welt. Das sagt eine neue Studie. Mit Genf und Lausanne landen zwei weitere Schweizer Städte auf Spitzenplätzen. Doch was macht eine «Smart City» überhaupt aus? «Eine Smart City bietet eine hohe Lebensqualität, ohne dafür zu viele Ressourcen zu verbrauchen», sagt Vicente Carabias. Falsche Polizisten, Schock-Anrufe, Enkeltrick, Liebesbetrug: Betrugsformen gibt es viele. Die Maschen sind bekannt und doch fallen wir immer wieder darauf herein. Warum? Weil wir Schwächen haben, welche die Betrüger gezielt und vor allem geschickt ausnutzen. «Jeden von uns kann es erwischen, aber nicht jederzeit», sagt dazu Dirk Baier, Leiter des Instituts für Delinquenz und Kriminalprävention an der ZHAW. Und er sagt auch: Das einzige Mittel, Betrügern das Handwerk zu legen, ist Aufklärung. Je besser unsere Bevölkerung informiert sei, desto schwerer haben es die Täter. Am 8. März 2014 verschwindet Flug MH370 mit 239 Personen an Bord von den Radarschirmen – und auch zehn Jahre später ist unklar, was genau passiert ist. Was weiss man heute über das Verschwinden? He holds a BASc in General Management from ZHAW. Prior to university, Nicolas played football and worked at Credit Suisse and PAN Asset Management AG. During his undergraduate studies, Nicolas joined the startup jayboo as a late co-founder and stayed there for 2 years before starting his next venture, Poinz. At Poinz, Nicolas experienced all the ups and downs of entrepreneurship: he bootstrapped the company for 1.5 years, almost saw the company go bankrupt, lost an exit opportunity at the last minute, got funded by the Deindeal mafia founders, scaled his company up, and ended up meeting his future wife there. After 6.5 years at Poinz, Nicolas felt that he and his co-founder were not sufficiently in agreement regarding the future of the company, and he also had the urge to start a project in the mental health industry, so he left Poinz in 2019 to start Aepsy a year later. His desire to delve deeper into the mental health industry came when a friend of his went through a mental health crisis, and he found that searching online for a psychologist was a nightmare. He knew his friend wasn't an isolated case: statistics estimate that ⅓ of Swiss people suffer from mental health issues, and that out of those people, ⅔ do not reach out for help. So he created a platform where people can answer a few questions about their needs and be presented with a suitable selection of therapists, with whom they can do intro calls to assess the fit. She holds a degree in Communication and Media Studies from ZHAW. Pascal Koenig is the co-founder, former CEO and current board member at AVA women, a startup manufacturing wearable fertility trackers for women. He studied business in St Gallen and New York and worked at McKinsey for a few years before being invited by one of his university professors to join a startup project — Cardiosave. Pascal and Sophie have created a fundraising masterclass which is available for free at https://swisspreneur.org/fundraising. During this live session, they summarized the masterclass into a few key takeaways, some of which are jotted down in these shownotes as well. How do you know if VC money is right for you? Sophie and Pascal think that if you can afford to go bootstrapped, you should do it. If you only need to raise a small sum of money, go for angel investors. If you want to raise larger amounts, it would make sense to reach out to VC investors, but you should take into consideration that a VC fund's goal is to have one of their investments return the value of the entire fund. So if you pitch to a CHF 100M fund, know that their goal is to invest in a startup that will return them 100M. Is that the kind of startup that you are willing to build and capable of building? How do I make my startup more “investable”? First of all, you need to strengthen the team. If your startup has little to no traction but a great idea, then what funds evaluate is the team's potential. Secondly, you should attempt to build some traction through things like marketing campaigns, and if you haven't validated your product/service yet, you should at least validate the tech it's based on. How much equity should I give away in my first round? No more than 25%. Remember, if things go well, you'll be doing plenty of rounds. How do I come up with my startup's valuation?/ How much money should I ask for? Know that if you ask for CHF 1M, that presupposes your company valuation is CHF 4M. So if you go in asking for CHF 5M and investors don't think your company is worth CHF 20M, you're not getting any money. Should I go for an equity round or a convertible loan? Convertible loans have the advantage of being fast: you can deploy the money the following day. Pascal and Sophie recommend that if your company is still early stage and/or if you're raising a small sum, you should go for a convertible loan. For bigger rounds/late stage, go for equity. What makes a great pitch deck? Simplicity. It should be crystal clear even for people who don't work with you/in your industry. Why do I need to build a long list of 100 investors? Shouldn't I be selective? Selectivity happens further down the line. If you just talk to 5 investors, even if they respond enthusiastically, that doesn't at all mean that they'll invest. Pascal recommends that you reach out to 100 investors (given that they all invest in your industry/stage), because out of those 100, 50 will do a call. Out of the 50, 20 will go into due diligence. And then once you get your first term sheet from one of them, other term sheets start showing up — that's the time to be selective!

Wer ab Zürich oder Basel mit dem Nachtzug fahren will, muss teilweise mehr zahlen fürs Ticket. Die ÖBB haben die Preise angepasst, sie verändern sich nun je nach Nachfrage. Mit dem Flugzeug zu verreisen, ist meist günstiger. Aber warum ist Zugfahren im Schnitt teurer? News Plus hat Antworten. Vor Kurzem lag ein Ticket für ein Schlafwagen-Abteil von Basel nach Amsterdam noch bei 283 Euro. Seit dem Fahrplanwechsel ist es stand heute Vormittag mehr als doppelt so viel. Denn die Österreichischen Bundesbahnen (ÖBB), die alle Nachtzüge in der Schweiz betreiben, haben ihre Preise angepasst. Somit wird der Nachtzug auf manchen Strecken teurer. Darauf aufmerksam geworden ist Timo Grossenbacher, Journalist bei Tamedia und Initiant von Night Ride – einem Vergleichsportal für Nachtzüge. Mit den neuen Preisen sei der Zug auf gewissen Strecken nicht mehr konkurrenzfähig zum Flugzeug, sagt Timo Grossenbacher. Dass Fliegen meist günstiger ist als Zugfahren, zeigt auch eine Studie der Umweltorganisation Greenpeace. Womit das zu tun hat, erklärt der Mobilitätsexperte Thomas Sauter-Servaes von der ZHAW.

He is leading a module of the Coffee Excellence continuing education course at ZHAW, and various other educational programs with partners of ZHAW. Samo is actively participating at coffee conferences, is one of the co-authors of the SCA Freshness Handbook and Water Handbook and has contributed to scientific papers and book chapters about coffee.
