This episode was named months ago: a prayer, a wish shared by one Tarneem Jaber and one Kaitlin Prest. "THE GENOCIDE IS A MEMORY, NOT AN ANNIVERSARY". The genocide has gotten even more terrifying as we mark an entire year of slaughter, terror and complacency. Attacks are now zeroing in on the North of Gaza: the home of Ahmad Tarneem and Hamza. Every day, sometimes every hour they try to call their mother and oldest brother (and his wife, who just had a baby) who are still there, with no way to escape. At the same time, we reflect on an entire year of collaboration, awakening and care. Ahmad Jaber celebrates a birthday that only reminds him of a year of his youth he has lost. In the penultimate episode of the series, KP, Ahmad, Tarneem and the rest of the team take stock of the past, the future and the way we and the world will never be the same. Help Ahmad Jaber enroll in University HERE. THE UPDATE: it is half way through the semester, he was accepted at a University in Turkey that will allow him to continue from where he left off! He cannot enroll unless we can make enough for tuition: 7k remaining!

The love story underneath the love story. We finally meet the real-life Charlie Park. Audio artist and friend Brendan Baker: the sound genius who inspired and supported KP to be the artist she is today. Real moments from the real relationship that started it all. If you are an artist or a writer interested in the complicated journey of translating real life into a fictional universe, this one is for you. If you are a regular human being interested in how love is born and grows and changes over the course of decades, this one is for you. We start with a full length audio doc about all of that. And then: the end of a romance. The anatomy of a breakup. The final chapter of “The Shadows”. This is the 6th episode of The Shadows, from CBC Podcasts. Made by Kaitlin Prest with production and co-writing from Phoebe Wang, editing by Sharon Mashihi, and associate production by Yasmine Mathurin. Cameos from Greg, Nancy, and Natalie Prest, Eliot Feenstra, Ian Field Stewart Raven Castle and the residency SMT. You hear Brendan Baker's award-winning creations from the Love+Radio era. The original unpublished title was “Anatomy of a Resentment”. This episode chronicles the era of a relationship wherein every minor annoyance is a symbol of the very major sacrifices we make to accommodate the shortcomings of the person we love. The story underneath the story: Mitchell Akiyama and KP spending 80+ hours pretending to be in a relationship in the summer of 2018. Fortunately, the frustrations you hear in this episode are (mostly) fiction. Six years later, Mitch and KP are Toronto besties. This is episode 5 of The Shadows, from CBC Podcasts, written and directed by Kaitlin Prest with production and sound design help from senior producer Phoebe Wang. Story editing by Sharon Mashihi. Associate producer Yasmine Mathurin made this episode sparkle. Mitchell Akiyama as Charlie Park with cameos from Kaitlin's friends as well as Greg, Nancy, and Natalie Prest. What is love? What is it really? bell hooks writes that love is something that we do. Not something that we feel. Not a story. So what do we do when we're inside of a love that feels like a great love of the ages? The kind of romance that has a life of its own?  The story underneath the story in this episode is meeting Johnny Spence. The performer and musician that breathed life into the character “Devon”. Former owner of sweater.  This is episode 4 of The Shadows, from CBC Podcasts,  made by Kaitlin Prest in collaboration with Phoebe Wang. Musician and artist Johnny Spence performs as Devon. There are certain kinds of things a sweater spends its life dreaming about. Primarily: achieving the coveted position of: favourite.  The story underneath the story of this episode is one that we will never tell. What we CAN tell: is that the sweater who speaks in this episode is real and it lives to this very day in KP's trunk. It was given to her in the year 2014, 9 years ago this very week of November. She washed the sweater once and only once since then. The last time she wore it was last week.  This is episode 3 of The Shadows, made by Kaitlin Prest in collaboration with Phoebe Wang and CBC Podcasts.

Today I begin an experimental piece called the Tillie Friendship Project. Inspired by Audio Smut and The Heart podcasts, I got an H1N Zoom mic, the newer version of what Kaitlin Prest started with when recording Audio Smut. Seriously, if you’ve never heard it, go listen to it - it’s still ground breaking even if she and I disagree on the possibility of non monogamy as a functional relationship style. While we don’t intend to come close to the alternative excellence of Prest’s early work, we did want to see what it looks like when two people try to document their experiences of friendship such that they can refer to them in the future. Unfortunately the H1N Zoom sounded great on the live monitor but was saving the audio as the lowest quality MP3 which was notably less good. Hashtag learning experiences. Today we talk about artificial intelligence, robots, capitalism, and sexually transmitted infections. That’s a fair first conversation as friends, right?

In a company blog post, VP and head of global advertising business Jay Richman said that the service is "taking formats that traditionally have been more of a static experience and making it a more personalized and attractive one." That said, in a story for The Verge, Ashley Carman explains that while Spotify's new technology breaks ground in the industry, it also puts consumer privacy at risk. "Podcasts are sensitive listening data — the topics can be niche and revealing — so users rightly might have privacy concerns about how what they consume will be siphoned back to brands," says Carman. When Richman was asked about these issues, he responded that consumers can opt-out of data targeting. If you want more information on this topic, head to the Snacks Daily podcast. Hosts Nick and Jack share some more information about how strategic ad insertion will appear in your listening experience.Mermaid Palace, Kaitlin Prest's new production house, is bringing The Heart back to the podcast airwaves in partnership with Radiotopia. In this our 4th episode of New Aural Cultures, Richard Berry has been talking to 3 more authors about their work. Whilst each of authors arrives at podcasting from different routes there are themes that cut across each of their interviews that are central to some of the debates in podcast studies. In this episode Stacey Copeland talks about her work in feminist media and radio studies, and in particular the work of podcaster Kaitlin Prest in The Heart (if you haven’t already binged through The Heart we suggest that you add it to your list). Stacey is a media producer and Ph.D. student at Simon Fraser University’s School of Communication in Vancouver, Canada. She received her Master of Arts from the Ryerson York joint Communication and Culture graduate program where she studied with a focus on radio production, sound studies, media culture and gender studies. It was during her Master’s work that Copeland co-founded FemRadio, a Toronto, Canada based feminist community radio collective. Some areas of scholarly interest include feminist media, oral/aural histories, sound archives, media history, phenomenology of voice, sensory ethnography, and cultural heritage. Our second interview is the artist Robbie Wilson, who merged podcasting with art practice in his work called Wandercast. As piece of work this podcast provides an alternative application for the podcast form. Robbie is a creative practitioner, artistic researcher, and published author. His practice-as-research PhD was awarded in November 2018 – the project developed and examined playful, participatory strategies for finding novel ways of perceiving and interacting with people, places, things, and ideas. In this way, Robbie’s practice facilitates creative learning: it creates the conditions for creativity to be learned. In our third interview Kathleen Collins talks about her love for podcasts as a listener led to this investigation into comedian hosted podcasts and their link to conversations around mental health. Kathleen is a librarian and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. since 2007. Previously, she was in the journalism field for a decade, working as an editorial researcher. In the year since accusations of sexual assault were first brought against Harvey Weinstein, our news has been flooded with stories of sexual misconduct, indicting very visible figures in our public life. Most of these cases have involved unequivocal breaches of consent, some of which have been criminal. But what have also emerged are conversations surrounding more difficult situations to parse – ones that exist in a much grayer space. When we started our own reporting through this gray zone, we stumbled into a challenging conversation that we can’t stop thinking about. In this second episode of ‘In the No’, radio-maker Kaitlin Prest joins us for a conversation with Hanna Stotland, an educational consultant who specializes in crisis management. Her clients include students who have been expelled from school for sexual misconduct. In the aftermath, Hanna helps them reapply to school. While Hanna shares some of her more nuanced and confusing cases, we wrestle with questions of culpability, generational divides, and the utility of fear in changing our culture. Advisory: This episode contains some graphic language and descriptions of very sensitive sexual situations, including discussions of sexual assault, consent and accountability, which may be very difficult for people to listen to. Visit The National Sexual Assault Hotline at online.rainn.org for resources and support.  This episode was reported with help from Becca Bressler and Shima Oliaee, and produced with help from Rachael Cusick.  Special thanks to Ben Burke and Jackson Prince. In 2017, radio-maker Kaitlin Prest released a mini-series called "No" about her personal struggle to understand and communicate about sexual consent. That show, which dives into the experience, moment by moment, of navigating sexual intimacy, struck a chord with many of us. It's gorgeous, deeply personal, and incredibly thoughtful. And it seemed to presage a much larger conversation that is happening all around us in this moment. And so we decided to embark, with Kaitlin, on our own exploration of this topic. Over the next three episodes, we'll wander into rooms full of college students, hear from academics and activists, and sit in on classes about BDSM. But to start things off, we are going to share with you the story that started it all. Today, meet Kaitlin (if you haven't already).  In The No Part 1 is a collaboration with Kaitlin Prest. It was produced with help from Becca Bressler. The "No" series, from The Heart was created by writer/director Kaitlin Prest, editors Sharon Mashihi and Mitra Kaboli, assistant producer Ariel Hahn and associate producer Phoebe Wang, associate sound designer Shani Aviram. It's official, and it's one more amazing step into the future at Life of the Law: we have a new Executive Director. Six years after Nancy Mullane, Tom Hilbink and Shannon Heffernan launched the first episode of Life of the Law, with stories about jury nullification and jailhouse lawyers, we welcome a new fearless leader. Tony Gannon, whom you have come to know as our talented behind-the-scenes Senior Producer brings his vision and exciting energy to LOTL as our new Executive Director.  This change will allow Nancy Mullane to focus on reporting, which, as many of you know, is what Nancy lives to do! To celebrate this moment for Tony and Nancy, we have chosen to publish one of Nancy's stories from our archives... "Release Day." In 1994, California voters passed thethree strikes lawwhich required anyone with two felony convictions to receive a sentence of 25 years to life for committing their third felony. Between the mid-1970s and 2006, the three strikes law and other harsh sentencing guidelines increased California's prison population by 750 percent. On November 6, 2012, Californians voted to change the three strikes law. That measure, known as Proposition 36 eliminated life sentences for non-violent crimes and allowed some of the prisoners sentenced under the three strikes law to petition for release for time served. Curtis Penn is one of those prisoners. Life of the Law executive producer Nancy Mullane chronicles the day Curtis was released from prison. Years after Kaitlin wrote those emails, the two friends sit down to talk about them and what they meant. We know, you use your phones everywhere. At work. When you're with your kids. Underneath the table. In the bathroom (admit it – and special thanks to listener Andrew Conkling for the warning on that one).  GraceAnn Bennett, the advertising executive turned tech entrepreneur behind a new app called PlsPlsMe, wants to give you an excuse to whip it out in the last sacred frontier: Bed. Well, sort of.  As a 20-something virgin Mormon newlywed, Bennett expected her new husband to just get it.  "I thought he was supposed to figure it out. Figure out sex... figure out how to unlock me in some kind of way without me giving any instructions. Because instructions, to me, were a turn off. I thought, 'OK, well, if I tell him then it kind of kills it.' Just like someone telling you, 'Buy me this!' and then wrapping it up for Christmas. Right? It's like, OK, this is not, this isn't sexy, this isn't fun. This isn't how it's supposed to work." Nineteen years of marriage later, those primal instincts still hadn't kicked in. The couple ultimately got divorced – and, unable to shake the feeling that this just wasn't how sex was supposed to work, Bennett quit her job in advertising to focus on fixing sex lives. She asked the Kinsey Institute to help her answer the question: Is anyone out there really having good sex? If so, what does it take? The results weren't really that surprising: One out of three respondents in the 2,000 person sample said they wished it was easier for them to talk with partners about their sexual desires. For the past few months, the Note to Self team has been collaborating with Kaitlin Prest, host of The Heart – an audio art project and podcast about intimacy and humanity. Prest got two couples to test the app and the premise: can technology disrupt your sex life? In a good way? Listen above for some taboo, sometimes scary, and absolutely intimate stuff. In this episode: Kaitlin Prest, host of The Heart (with cameos from producer Mitra Kaboli) GraceAnn Bennett, founder of PlsPlsMe Katherine Frank, cultural anthropologist and sex researcher PlsPlsMe is available as of this week on iTunes. An Android version should be available later this year. If you try it – or something like it – let us know?
