Dr. Joe Rigney goes through the creation account in Genesis 1-3 to show the headship of the husband and wife relationship. Dr. Rigney emphasizes the importance of a courageous marriage in the 21st century, based on biblical teachings. He discusses the concept of male headship rooted in creation, highlighting the roles of husbands and wives. This session delves into the complementarity of the sexes in God's design and the importance of faithful fulfillment of specific roles. Dr. Rigney discusses the parallel between Christ and the church and husband and wife in complementarianism. The roles of husbands in sacrificial leadership and wives in showing respect and honor are emphasized for a harmonious and fruitful marital relationship. # Building a Courageous Marriage: Understanding Roles and Aligning Actions In a world that increasingly challenges traditional values, understanding the biblical foundations of marriage is more crucial than ever. Today, I want to delve into what it means to build a courageous marriage in the 21st century, focusing on the roles of husbands and wives, and how these roles align with God's divine plan. ### The Cultural Controversy In recent times, the church has faced significant controversies, particularly regarding gender identity and the biblical understanding of what it means to be human. These debates are not merely academic; they have profound implications on how we live out our faith and establish our households. As conservative, Bible-believing Christians, we often find ourselves culturally marginalized for our beliefs in the immutable nature of gender as created by God. ### The Role of Marriage in Shaping Children The home is the first school of learning. Here, children first encounter and absorb concepts of gender roles. The way a father loves their mother, the respect a mother shows to their father, these early observations shape children's expectations of their own future roles. In essence, marriage provides a framework for understanding manhood and womanhood, which is foundational for nurturing Christian children who can navigate the complexities of modern society with biblical integrity. ## Understanding Manhood and Womanhood The Bible provides clear frameworks in Genesis and Ephesians about what it means to be a man and a woman. These passages are not archaic texts but living words that still speak powerfully into our lives today. For instance, Ephesians 5 calls wives to submit to their husbands as to the Lord, and husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church. This mutual submission and love are indicative of the harmony God intends for marriage. ### The Indicatives, Imperatives, and Applications To fully grasp the biblical texts, we must understand three key concepts: **Indicatives**: These are factual statements about reality as established by God. **Imperatives**: These are commands or duties derived from those facts. **Applications**: These involve applying the imperatives in our daily lives in a way that aligns with the indicatives. ## Aligning Actions with God's Commands The beauty of God's design for marriage is seen when these roles are lived out according to His commands. When a husband exercises his role as head of the family with love and integrity, and when a wife supports her husband with respect and grace, the marriage thrives. This alignment is not always easy. It requires courage, faith, and a continual reliance on God's strength and wisdom. In the face of challenges, may we find the fortitude to build homes that are beacons of Christ's love, truth, and grace. Let us hold fast to the truth, love earnestly, and lead our families with the courage that comes from God alone. www.ReformedRookie.com

Jesus built the house of God. David wanted to build God a house, but God said He would build David a house, or dynasty, that would never end (2 Samuel 7:1-17). We know Solomon built a physical house, or temple, for God. But Jesus built the greater spiritual house, or temple, known as the church. The beauty is we are part of the house Christ built. Why should this encourage us? It has to do with durability! Jesus wanted us to be confident that His house wouldn't be destroyed by even the strongest spiritual forces: "I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18). That's sturdy isn't it? If you're in Christ, you're part of this house that can't even be knocked down by hell itself. https://youtu.be/jArCX8TI-zI Jesus built the house of God. Solomon built a physical house, or temple, but Jesus built the greater spiritual house, or temple: the church. Family Worship Guide for Jesus Built the House of God Day 1: Read John 14:15-31 and discuss: what are indicatives in Scripture? What are imperatives in Scripture? Discuss a few of each. How can indicatives produce obedience indirectly? What does the law produce because of our sinful flesh? Day 2: Read 2 Samuel 7:13, John 2:18-22, Acts 2:33, Zechariah 6:12 and discuss: what was the relationship between the physical temple and Jesus's physical body? Why would Jesus try to get the Jews to look past the temple to His body? When and how did Jesus build the spiritual house of God? (Hint: look in Acts 2 for the “when”). Day 3: Read Ephesians 2:19-22, 1 Timothy 3:15, 2 Corinthians 6:16, 1 Peter 2:4, Hebrews 3:1-3 and discuss: why does Jesus receive more glory than Moses? What encouragement can we receive from being part of the spiritual house of God? What does this reveal to you about your salvation? Sermon Notes for Jesus Built the House of God The title of this morning's sermon is, “Jesus Built a Greater House.” Go ahead and open your Bibles to 2 Samuel 7. We were in a series called, “Pursuing Wisdom.” We spent quite a bit of time talking about Solomon. Matthew 12:42 The queen of the South…came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, SOMETHING GREATER THAN SOLOMON IS HERE. Solomon is a type and shadow of Jesus. Now I would like to spend the next few weeks talking about why Jesus is greater than Solomon. Let me share something interesting with you that happened when Pastor Nathan and I were at the Shepherds Conference at John MacArthur's church. During one of the sessions a speaker talked about indicatives versus imperatives. You might remember me explaining these before: Indicatives are truths or statements. They indicate something.Imperatives are commands. They tell us to do something. The speaker said some things that stuck with me: First, he said it is much easier to preach on the imperatives versus indicatives.Second, our preaching should have a healthy, balanced diet of both.Third, if we're preaching too much on the imperatives, we should try to do more preaching on the indicatives.

To believe the true gospel and to teach it accurately-we have to distinguish those things that caused our salvation-the INDICATIVES from those things that are commanded to those WHO ALREADY have salvation-the IMPERATIVES-Exhortations.--3. Many professing Christians have zeal without knowledge and so they will use the exhortations or imperatives to try and work their way into the INDICATIVES-which is folly and a denial of the cross and Christ. A sinner cannot help or cause their own salvation. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE.--4. The exhortations-imperatives of scripture were given to those that are already saved. They are for those who are already children of God by sovereign grace election, redemption and sanctification by Christ Jesus.--5. Good TABLE MANNERS do not make my neighbor's kids my children. My children are mine by reason of being born of me and my wife. Thus, none becomes a child of God because of doing exhortations. We are children by grace alone and adoption in Christ and the testimony of our possessing the paternity of God is in the gospel testimony. Testifying of the person and work of Christ is the most authentic test of being a child born of God.--6. In the exhortations of the gospel, we also find that they have higher spiritual significance. We talked about loving the brethren and what that entails and why the gospel of God's free and sovereign grace is the only basis that enables one to love

1- We expounded on the Indicative and imperatives again. --2- An indicative explains what is true. It is not a command but expresses the rationale-reason behind the command.--3- When we use the term indicative, we are talking about what has already been indicated or declared to be true about you. The indicative informs us of an accomplished fact. Here is an example of indicative statement- -God in Christ has forgiven you.- That is an accomplished fact-unchangeable- because it is work that has been done by God alone in Christ alone. And that alone forms the basis of one's standing before God.--4- Imperatives are commands-exhortations to those that already have a status or position before God in Christ. -5- In the New Testament imperatives are always grounded on our union to-in-with Christ and what He accomplished, never by themselves. --6- And what that means is that imperatives flow from Indicatives-but never the other way round. And because people do not understand the proper relationship they end up in despair, pride or self-righteousness because they think they are accepted by God by their attempts to do the commands and not by the righteousness of Christ freely imputed.--7- We expounded this understanding after giving examples in the New Testament and then worked the rest of the Hebrews 10 chapter. Lots of gospel learning. May the Lord grant you light. And it is free-

1. We talked about the INDICATIVES and IMPERATIVES of the gospel and showed their difference and importance. The indicatives are the only grounds of salvation. Imperatives on the other hand flow because one is saved, but not to be saved.-2. The writer of Hebrews uses the same manner of reasoning His gospel testimony. He conditions all of salvation in the Priesthood, Sacrifice, Sonship, blood, New Covenant, Perfection in Christ.-3. Thus, the exhortations that follow are in the light of that understanding-never vice versa.-4. The Hebrew Christians were having problems of UNBELIEF and by that-the writer meant going back to the Law of Moses. Going to the Law of Moses is UNBELIEF and that still abounds under different forms.-5. And this was unbelief that happens when one has heard the truth. Thus, defecting from the Truth of an accomplished redemption and sufficiency of Christ alone to the Law or any system of salvation is what WILLFUL SINNING means in that context.-6. Willful sinning does not mean HABITUAL or DELIBERATE sins because all sins are habitual and deliberate even from the most pious Christians. This text is not talking about daily sins at all.-7. We discussed that and more gospel nuggets. And it is all FREE-

Branden Fitelson (Rutgers University) gives a talk at the MCMP Workshop on Computational Metaphysics titled "Russellian Descriptions & Gibbardian Indicatives (Two Case Studies Involving Automated Reasoning)". Abstract: The first part of this talk (which is joint work with Paul Oppenheimer) will be about the perils of representing claims involving Russellian definite descriptions in an "automated reasoning friendly" way. I will explain how to eliminate Russellian descriptions, so as to yield logically equivalent (and automated reasoning friendly) statements. This is a special case of a more general problem -- which is representing philosophical theories/explications in a way that automated reasoning tools can understand. The second part of the talk shows how automated reasoning tools can be useful in clarifying the structure (and requisite presuppositions) of well-known philosophical "theorems". Here, the example comes from the philosophy of language, and it involves a certain "triviality result" or "collapse theorem" for the indicative conditional that was first discussed by Gibbard. I show how one can use automated reasoning tools to provide a precise, formal rendition of Gibbard's "theorem". This turns out to be rather revealing about what is (and is not) essential to Gibbard's argument.

The Bible makes sense in its deepest and richest capacity only when we read it through Jesus shaped goggles. When we see all of it through the lens of its Main Character - it should cause us to preach explicitly Christian sermons.Recorded November 31 in Bradenton FloridaChrist Centered Preaching Handout1. Two vital hermeneutics:1. First, we must have a good grasp on the original context of our particular passage and the original intent of the message. (who wrote this and why?)2. Second, we must always understand the context of our passage within the context of all of scripture, and also understand it in terms of the grand narrative of God’s redemption.2. Redemptive-Historical progression1. Redemptive-historical progression traces God’s history with the world from his good creation (Gen 1), to the human fall into sin and God’s plan of redemption through the seed of the woman (Gen 3:15), to a long history of God continuing the line of the seed of the woman (Gen 3 - Malachi), to Christ (the Gospels), the Church (Acts and the New Testament Letters), and finally to the new creation (Rev 22).2. In other words, in the Bible we can trace a continuous redemptive history which centers in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who then ascends to rule his church from heaven until he comes again. Creation to New Creation.3. Promise Fulfillment1.If the text contains a promise of the coming Messiah, then you can easily move to the New Testament to show the ultimate fulfillment of the promise in Jesus Christ.1. Example: “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and the obedience of the peoples is his.” - Gen 49:102. Show the fulfillment in Matthew 1:1-17 Jesus Christ, the king of kings, born of the tribe of Judah and the House of David.4. Typology1. Old Testament events, persons, or institutions can function as types which foreshadow the great Antitype - the person and work of Jesus Christ.2. Examples: The fall of Adam and Eve. Adam is the human race’s representative, he prefigures Christ the second Adam, who also is a representative of a new human race.1. Noah’s Ark; The Ark of the Covenant; the tabernacle; the rock in the wilderness; Crossing the red sea; The Passover Lamb; Pentecost; Issac; Moses; Joshua; King David…etc5. Analogy1. Analogy exposes parallels between what God taught Israel and what Christ promises the Church; what God demanded of Israel (the Law) and what Christ demands of his Church.2. Example: Genesis 12:1-9 Israel must claim Canaan for the Glory of God; in the New Testament Jesus mandates his Church to claim all nations for God (Matt 28:18-20) Your message or theme then would be something like -God reclaiming the earth as his good kingdom through the work of Christ.6. Longitudinal Themes1. Although similar to redemptive-historical progression in some ways, it is distinct in focusing on the development of theological ideas rather than development in redemptive history. Longitudinal themes refers to themes that can be traced through the scriptures from the Old Testament to the New - Themes such as God’s coming kingdom, God’s covenant, home and exile, rest and sabbath, God’s redemption, righteousness and nakedness, God’s presence, God’s love, God’s faithfulness, God’s grace, God’s justice and judgment, God’s providence.1. Every major Old Testament theme leads to Christ7. New Testament Reference1. The New Testament reference makes a direct bridge to Christ.1.Example: God created his good creation by his powerful “word”; John in his gospel tells us that that “Word” is Jesus Christ (John 1:1,3)8. Contrast1. Because of the coming of Christ the text’s message for the contemporary Church may be quite different from the original message for Israel. So we preach by contrast.2. Example: circumcision was a commanded by God for every Jew; but for us we know that Christ is our circumcision and circumcision is a heart issue. Circumcision was the outward sign of the Old covenant, but in Christ baptism is the sign of the New Covenant- which is an outward expression that we have died with Christ and have been raised with him to new life.. So we contrast the the Old and the New.Examples 1-8 taken and adapted from Sydney Greidanus Preaching Christ from Genesis*9. The Imperative vs. Indicatives model1. An Imperative is an immediate action. Example of a Biblical imperative: “Do not be drunk with wine which is dissipation but be filled with the Spirit.”2. An Indicative serves as a sign or indication of something. Example: “You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.”3. The idea here is that God never commands us to do something apart from the grace he has already shown us through the work of Christ. The commands of God are never separate from who he is and what he has done for us in Christ4. Though obviously clear in the letters of Paul and most of the NT, we can see this model going back all the way to the giving of the Ten Commandments.1. “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me…”1. Scripture is full of the Imperative vs. Indicative model showing us that whatever we do for God it is out of grateful love and adoration of what he has already done for us. This is a wonderful exercise for the mind and heart of any pastor and wonderful tool for us as ministers of the Gospel.10. Jesus as fulfillment to our hopes and longings.1. What is the scripture commanding or offering to us? What is it, and why we want and need it?2. How do we fail to live up to this command or standard? Or how and why we fail to obtain what is offered.3. How does Jesus and what he has done through the cross answer my dilemma?? How Jesus offers it to us freely. (Themes like Freedom, righteousness, faithfulness, bravery/courage, justice & mercy, forgiveness, love, etc)11. Connecting our story to a Biblical character or Biblical story1.Any passages where we are dealing with an Old Testament character who is showing incredible faith/trust in God we can ask the simple question - how much more reason do we have to trust God? We have God’s complete trust-worthiness displayed in the cross. Jesus, God incarnate, became vulnerable, weak, helpless, killable - for you and for me. You can trust him. We have much greater reason to trust God than any OT figure because of the cross.Recommended Resources for Further Study:Books:Jesus Storybook Bible - Sally Lloyd JonesPreaching - Tim KellerChrist Centered Preaching - Brian ChappellPreaching Christ in All of Scripture - Edmund ClowneyPreaching Christ in Genesis - Sidney GreidanusPreaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture - Graeme GoldsworthyThe Soul Winner - Charles SpurgeonStanding in Grace - David GuzikPreaching and Preachers - Martyn Lloyd-JonesThe Heart of the Gospel - Martyn Lloyd-JonesChrist in the Psalms - Patrick Henry ReardonThe Gospel - Ray Ortlund JrRhythms of Grace - Mike CosperRomans: Encountering God’s Power - John StottProdigal God - Tim KellerKnowing God - J.I. How do we find balance between doing and being? Whether type A or type B or type anything in-between Balance is difficult for any woman, But at the heart level God has some very clear instructions for us about our identity and living. We are diving in to indicatives and imperatives that help us live the abundant life in Christ.   How do we live a balanced life between being and doing? Is there such thing as balance? Like I said, I swing from being the most meal planned, scheduled mom one week to having no  bras to wear are the next because I haven’t switched over my laundry load in a week. Maybe i should have penciled in ‘put clothes in dryer’ on the schedule and made it happen. But really I began to think - this is all way more about the issues of the heart than a color coded planner or a laid back go with the flow mentality. Indicatives and Imperatives Indicative  - an indication of something - it’s a statement of a fact - for example who we are in Christ Imperative  - of vital importance - a command- how we should act as a result Both are of equal importance - it’s vital we know who we are in Christ and it’s vital that we obey Him and walk in His ways. But there is an important order. We must first know who we are in Christ and out of that is an overflow of obedience.  Ephesians is a great example of this who we are and then how we should act business - Chapters 1-3 are saturated with gospel indicatives and Chapters 4-6 are filled with Gospel imperatives. The first 3 chapters Paul gives us a robust understanding of what it means to be a child of God - our identity that is found in Christ. The last three chapters are all about living out of who we are in Christ - walking in a manner worthy of our calling. Bible Study Tool Make a T chart and write on the left side "indicatives" and on the right side "Imperatives." Read Ephesians chapters 1-3 and write out indicatives you see of you who you are in Christ. Then read Ephesians chapters 4-6 and write out imperatives you see of how then we should live.
