In this episode of the Inside JABA Series podcast, we dive into a fascinating discussion on health-related routines for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Dr. Katie McHugh, Dr. Claudia Dozier, and Editor-in-Chief Dr. John Borrero share insights from their recent study, Synchronous Reinforcement Schedules Promote Tolerance of Health-Related Routines for Adults with Disabilities. The conversation explores how synchronous reinforcement schedules—where reinforcement occurs in real time alongside behavior—can improve tolerance for essential routines like toothbrushing, bathing, wearing medical devices, and more. The research team highlights case studies, methodological considerations, and the broader implications for clinical practice. Key Topics Covered ✅ Synchronous reinforcement schedules and why they may be more effective (and preferred) than delayed reinforcement. ✅ Applications for health routines such as toothbrushing, bathing, mask-wearing, GPS bracelets, helmets, and pulse oximeters. ✅ Collaborative service delivery with nursing and medical professionals. ✅ Challenges in participant consent and maintaining experimental control. ✅ Importance of measuring both behavioral outcomes and affective states. ✅ Future research directions, including reinforcer assessments, continuous vs. discontinuous schedules, and maintaining treatment effects. Next Steps and Future Directions Editorial updates for broader keyword usage to increase accessibility outside of behavior analysis. Comparing graduated exposure with contingent vs. synchronous reinforcement interventions. Implementing more systematic preference and reinforcer assessments in future studies. Exploring hybrid approaches (e.g., combining graduated exposure with synchronous reinforcement). Collecting more comprehensive data on participant affect and treatment integrity. Rigney discusses his new book, “The Sin of Empathy,” and why we need to “sober-minded” rather than peddlers of pity. “The main virtue that I commend is sober-mindedness. This is, another biblical term. And if you think about what does the word sober-minded mean, well, normally you think of sober in terms of drunkenness and alcohol, right? If you get drunk on alcohol, you're not sober, and so you need to sober up. The basic biblical claim then is you can be drunk on more than just alcohol.”Rigney is Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrews College. He lives in Moscow, ID with his wife and three sons. In this conversation, Joe Rigney discusses his book 'The Sin of Empathy,' exploring the complexities and dangers of empathy in modern society. He contrasts empathy with sympathy, examines the biblical perspective on these emotions, and critiques the emotional manipulation that can arise from excessive empathy. Rigney argues that compassion has been elevated to a control virtue, often leading to selective empathy that neglects justice. He emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to compassion and emotional engagement, warning against the potential for empathy to lead to cruelty when disconnected from moral truth. In this conversation, Joe Rigney explores the complexities of compassion and empathy, particularly in the context of Christian leadership and pastoral care. He discusses the dangers of untethered empathy, the importance of maintaining boundaries, and the role of flattery in compromising truth. Rigney offers practical advice for pastors on how to navigate difficult situations with compassion while remaining anchored in truth. He concludes with insights on preparing for future challenges in Christian living, drawing lessons from the Book of Judges.Chapters00:00 Introduction: The Devil's Tactics00:21 Guest Introduction: Dr. Joe Rigney00:31 Upcoming Event: King's Domain Conference02:13 Interview Begins: The Sin of Empathy02:48 Understanding Empathy and Sympathy04:12 Book Comparisons: Leadership and Emotional Sabotage vs. The Sin of Empathy07:44 Biblical Context: Empathy vs. Sympathy15:36 Empathy as Emotional Manipulation17:47 Cultural Shifts and Challenges23:55 Empathy in Modern Contexts28:36 The Sin of Empathy: A Controversial Perspective29:47 Lewis's Passion of Pity and Dangerous Compassion32:15 Empathy vs. Enmeshment: The Boundaries Debate33:43 Flattery and Deception in Christian Ministry35:49 The Trap of Seeking Compassionate Reputation41:03 Future-Proof Christianity: Standing Firm in Changing Times42:34 Practical Advice for Pastors: Balancing Compassion and Truth51:24 Navigating Tribalism in Modern Christianity53:37 Conclusion and Upcoming Conference Details

The conversation centers around Joe Rigney's book The Sin of Empathy, unpacking its flawed biblical and theological claims. We examine how this perspective targets women in particular, framing empathy as a weakness that leads believers astray. The episode also connects this mindset to broader cultural issues such as feminism, emotional intelligence, and traditional gender roles within Christian communities. Finally, we discuss the implications of this view on topics like transgender rights and abortion—and point out the striking absence of New Testament support in Rigney's arguments. You'll hear about balancing work, parenthood, transitioning from 9-5 to building your own biz, following someone else's career recipe and checklist, setting boundaries, being a leader, mother, getting clear on your own vision, values, your goals and responsibilities, feeling good about yourself, getting aligned in all areas of your life , burn out, questioning everything, what it really takes to self actualize, and so much more! Here's a quick snapshot of Brenda's story! “It took me 27 years of developing multi-million-dollar brands and CEOs—and one earth-shaking divorce—to finally go down that road. I had to reset everything—starting with my health, that foreign word “boundaries,” and my vision for my own life—if I wanted to build a business that wasn't just a repeat of the misaligned life I was so desperate to leave behind. Since then, I've coached hundreds of successful women in their 40s, 50s, and older to help them do the same. Because the thing I'm 100% sure about is that the world needs way more successful, innovative, and unstoppable women in business. In his book, Leadership and Emotional Sabotage, Dr. Joe Rigney states that one of the first responsibilities of a leader is to determine what is and what is not the mission. In this world, a man is responsible for his family, whether he chooses to fulfill that role, or abdicate from it. The world is in crisis, sure, but how we describe said crisis will determine how we go about solving it, if we can. As much as we hear the call for strong men in the Church, or the country, or in Gun Culture, Dr. Rigney reframes our perception of leadership in this uncertain world.
