EMPATHY HAS BEEN WEAPONIZED And there is a fantastic book about it called The Sin of Empathy: Compassion and Its Counterfeits by a fellow named Joe Rigney. Dr. Joe Rigney serves as Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrews College and a pastor at Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho. He is the author of eight books, including Leadership and Emotional Sabotage (Canon Press, 2024) as well as The Sin of Empathy. To say his take on how our natural sympathy has been weaponized against us isn't being taken well is an understatement, as you can read in this column, but after reading the book I agree with him 100%. We need compassion, not empathy. One helps, the other enables. It's a great book and you should buy it here. It's about compassion, not empathy. He joins me at 1.

È un'idea provocatoria e l'idea è questa: l'empatia — cioè, mettersi nei panni di un'altra persona, e sentire ciò che sente — è un peccato. Joe Rigney's recent work, The Sin of Empathy, explores how abuse can occur when we neglect the reality of objective truth in our efforts to sympathize with others. I enjoyed this conversation with Joe and appreciate the way he challenges us to think more deeply about how words like empathy are used in our culture. Is empathy the ultimate Christian virtue—or a counterfeit dressed in soft tears? In this no-holds-barred episode, Pastor Joseph Spurgeon is joined by Dr. Joe Rigney to expose the lie of empathy—a vice masquerading as virtue. We talk about What REALLY Happened to Austin Metcalf and Why No Justice? From murdered teenagers in Texas to cowardly judges and compromised pastors, we trace how untethered emotionalism is killing biblical justice and sabotaging male leadership in homes, churches, and courts. You’ll hear: ✅ Why empathy isn’t the same as sympathy—and why one is biblical and the other isn’t ✅ How the LGBT agenda, victimhood culture, and woke politics weaponize emotions ✅ Why many men surrender their leadership to the tears of wives and tantrums of children ✅ The biblical command to not pity certain people—and why that matters today ✅ How to maintain “frame” like David when emotional manipulation comes calling ✅ Practical ways to build sober-minded strength and resist emotional sabotage This episode will shake your assumptions and call you to lead with clarity, courage, and conviction. Don’t just feel—think biblically. Don’t just react—lead righteously. 00:00 - The Death of Justice in Texas 02:58 - The Sin of Empathy: A Call to Action 05:51 - Understanding Sympathy vs. Empathy 09:01 - The Historical Context of Empathy 11:56 - Biblical Examples of Empathy as a Sin 15:09 - The Deeper Issues Behind Empathy 18:01 - The Consequences of Misplaced Compassion 22:55 - The Complexity of Empathy and Tribalism 25:04 - Empathy in Cultural Contexts 30:18 - Empathy's Role in Family Dynamics 35:59 - Sober-Mindedness vs. Emotional Manipulation 39:05 - Cultivating Tethered Compassion Subscribe, share, and join the fight: Build. Dr. Joe Rigney joins Kira to talk about empathy - what is it, why is it so destructive and how have we misunderstood it both in the church and society in general? Rigney discusses his new book, “The Sin of Empathy,” and why we need to “sober-minded” rather than peddlers of pity. “The main virtue that I commend is sober-mindedness. This is, another biblical term. And if you think about what does the word sober-minded mean, well, normally you think of sober in terms of drunkenness and alcohol, right? If you get drunk on alcohol, you're not sober, and so you need to sober up. The basic biblical claim then is you can be drunk on more than just alcohol.”Rigney is Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrews College. He lives in Moscow, ID with his wife and three sons. In this episode, we dive deep into the controversial conversation around the so-called "sin of empathy"—a topic that has sparked significant debate within Christian circles. Nathan offers his hot take, followed by Cameron's more reflective approach, as we unpack the theological, cultural, and political dimensions of this complex issue. Drawing on the works of Joe Rigney and Ali Beth Stuckey, as well as commentary from figures like Elon Musk, we explore whether empathy—long considered a Christian virtue—can become problematic when it distorts truth or compromises identity. With references to theological shifts, cultural pressure points, and the nuances between empathy, sympathy, and compassion, this is a must-watch for Christians seeking deep, thoughtful analysis of current events through a biblical lens. Join us for a rich discussion that doesn't shy away from nuance, challenges assumptions, and aims to equip believers to engage the culture with both truth and grace.DONATE LINK: https://toltogether.com/donate BOOK A SPEAKER: https://toltogether.com/book-a-speakerJOIN TOL CONNECT: https://toltogether.com/tol-connect TOL Connect is an online forum where TOL listeners can continue the conversation begun on the podcast.

He emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to compassion and emotional engagement, warning against the potential for empathy to lead to cruelty when disconnected from moral truth. In this conversation, Joe Rigney explores the complexities of compassion and empathy, particularly in the context of Christian leadership and pastoral care. He discusses the dangers of untethered empathy, the importance of maintaining boundaries, and the role of flattery in compromising truth. Episode 187: Hosts Richard Kyte and Scott Rada discuss the emerging conservative critiques that frame empathy as a potential moral liability, offering a nuanced perspective on human compassion’s psychological and ethical dimensions. Kyte explained that some Christian commentators, including figures like Allie Beth Stuckey and Joe Rigney, have begun characterizing empathy as a potentially dangerous emotional response that can lead to misguided actions. "Empathy is a psychological ability to feel what another person is experiencing," Kyte said. "It's different from compassion, which involves taking practical action to help others." He emphasized that while empathy provides an important emotional foundation for understanding human suffering, it must be balanced with practical wisdom. The discussion highlighted recent controversies, including Elon Musk's approach to workforce reductions, which Kyte described as demonstrating a "callous disregard" for employees' experiences. The conversation also touched on broader social issues like homelessness, where simplistic solutions often fail to address complex systemic challenges. Kyte argued that responsible empathy requires careful consideration of legitimate needs and potential consequences. "You can't immediately go from feeling someone's pain to implementing a solution without understanding the broader context," he explained. Drawing from New York Times columnist David French's analysis, the podcast suggested that some conservative religious movements are increasingly prioritizing political dominance over compassionate understanding. Kyte warned that this approach could ultimately backfire by creating unnecessary cultural divisions. The podcast concluded with an ethical dilemma exploring how to respond to a potentially homeless individual using gym facilities, with Kyte emphasizing that behavior, not appearance, should guide compassionate responses. "The main question is whether the person is causing any harm," Kyte said. "If they're not disrupting others and are a paying member, there's no reason to intervene."

The conversation centers around Joe Rigney's book The Sin of Empathy, unpacking its flawed biblical and theological claims. We examine how this perspective targets women in particular, framing empathy as a weakness that leads believers astray. The episode also connects this mindset to broader cultural issues such as feminism, emotional intelligence, and traditional gender roles within Christian communities. A few months ago, I received a letter from a friend asking for advice. The letter says, “I want to ask for some advice regarding politics. I started trying to help 5 years ago and in those 5 years, I've never seen so much deception, greed, lies, good ol' boy clubs, evil plans, abuse, etc. My eyes were truly open to the amount of evil in our country and our city. I had no idea.” It then goes on to describe the cost of that 5-year involvement. And the loss of friends, the breaking of relationships, friends walking away and saying rude things. And then she says “I've got friends involved in politics with me and we are tired, exhausted, crying, and ready to give up. We just can't do it anymore. Nobody not in the fight seems to care that there is a fight. Knocking at doors trying to tell neighbors, trying to get their church to help. We all get the same thing: ‘I don't want to know.' ‘I don't care about politics.' ‘I don't have time, I have a golf game to get to.' ‘Why are you doing this? These things aren't happening.' Pastor, how do we stay in the conflict?”Joe Rigney, “The bishop's untethered empathy,” January 24, 2025.Daniel Darling, “More dangerous than ever,” August 28, 2024.
