En 1994, lors de son discours d'investiture, Nelson Mandela lit un poème devenu célèbre en Afrique du Sud et dans le monde entier : "L'enfant abattu par des soldats à Nyanga". Il a été écrit en mars 1960 par Ingrid Jonker, jeune poète afrikaner née en 1933. Bien que succincte (Ingrid Jonker s'est donnée la mort à l'âge de 32 ans), l'oeuvre de cette poétesse est connue dans de nombreux pays. Elle arrive enfin en France aux éditions La Barque qui a rassemblé en un volume les deux derniers recueils de Jonker : De fumée et d'ocre et Soleil incliné. Ângela Ferreira, nasceu em 1958 em Maputo, Moçambique. Concluiu os estudos de Artes Plásticas na África do Sul obtendo o grau de mestre na Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. Atualmente vive e trabalha em Lisboa, leciona na Faculdade de Belas Artes de Lisboa, onde obteve o Doutoramento, em 2016. O trabalho de Ângela Ferreira desenvolve-se em torno do impacto do colonialismo e pós-colonialismo na sociedade contemporânea. Estas investigações são guiadas por uma pesquisa profunda e pelo filtrar de ideias que conduzem a formas concisas, depuradas e evocativas. Representou Portugal na 52ª Bienal de Veneza em 2007, onde continuou as suas investigações sobre a forma como o modernismo europeu se adaptou, ou não, às realidades do continente africano traçando a história da ‘Maison Tropicale' de Jean Prouvé. É ainda a arquitetura que serve de ponto de partida para ao aprofundamento da sua longa pesquisa em torno do apagamento da memória colonial e a recusa da reparação, que encontra a sua mais complexa materialização na obra A Tendency to Forget (2015) focando o trabalho etnográfico do casal Jorge e Margot Dias. Pan African Unity Mural (2018), exibido no Maat Museum Lisboa e no Bildmuseet, Umea, Suécia foi concebido, retrospetiva e introspectivamente, para o “aqui” e o “agora”. Além da sua própria trajetória, outras histórias biográficas são simultaneamente narradas, expostas e escondidas neste trabalho. Em Dalaba: Sol'Exile (2019) um trabalho focado em Miriam Makeba, uma das mais proeminentes figuras contra o apartheid, Ferreira cria várias esculturas baseadas em elementos arquitectónicos da casa de exílio onde Makeba viveu em Conakri, quase como um protótipo da relação entre o modernismo e a arquitectura vernacular Africana. Ingrid Jonker (1933-1965) werd bij leven al gewaardeerd als een dichteres in het Afrikaans; naar haar dood groeide die waardering alleen maar. Dit gedicht is vertaald door Gerrit Komrij. Tijdens Expeditie Poetry gaan we op reis, zonder onze stoel te verlaten. We nemen je mee op ontdekkingstocht langs de sprankelende poëzie en cultuur van Zuid-Afrika. Voorkennis van poëzie is niet vereist, nieuwsgierigheid is je paspoort. Zuid-Afrika is behalve een land met roerige geschiedenis ook het land met elf officiële talen, naast vele ongeregistreerde. Van de oeroude kliktalen tot het Engels en Afrikaans van de kolonisten: in alle talen verhouden dichters zich tot de complexe werkelijkheid van hun land. Indrukwekkende dichters als Ingrid Jonker, Breyten Breytenbach en Antjie Krog drongen inmiddels door tot hier, maar er zijn er veel meer. Jonge dichters als Ronelda Kamfer en Koleka Putuma, performers als Thando the Poet, rymkletsers (rappers) als Jitsvinger en Hemelbesem. Zoals het uitgestrekte Zuid-Afrikaanse landschap de reiziger betovert, betovert dit programma met even felle als gesmoorde, uitgesproken als veelzijdige poëzie. Met hoogleraar Margriet van der Waal als gids in deze veelvormige literaire cultuur, toneelschrijfster Esther Duysker die gedichten leest, en de jonge Zuid-Afrikaanse cellist Abel Selaocoe, die zingt, klopt en strijkt op zijn instrument en speciaal dit weekend in Nederland was.

Fine Music Radio — What promises to be a fascinating presentation at the Youngblood gallery on 21st September is ESCAPE – THE INGRID JONKER STORY. The show is the brainchild of the Cape Town based jazz singer and teacher Nicky Shrire who was captivated by a selection of poems by Ingrid jonker and decided to set them to music with the accompaniment of a string quartet. Rodney Trudgeon invited Nicky Shrire into the People of Note studio to talk about this production and to hear more about Ingrid Jonker and also about Nicky’s exciting career as a musician.

Vandag is die een jaar herderking van die afsterwe van prof. T.T. Cloete. Cloete was 'n bekroonde Afrikaanse digter, Bybelvertaler, letterkundige en akademikus. Hy was verbonde aan die Potchefstroomse Universiteit (nou Noordwes-Universiteit) se Skool vir Tale en Skryfkuns. Hy het verskeie pryse vir sy werke ontvang, onder andere die Ingrid Jonker-prys, W.A. Simone Jonker (Venter) is die dogter van Ingrid Jonker en sy en haar man Ernesto Garcia Marques het onlangs ’n dubbel tribute album uitgereik met die naam: Ingrid Jonker – ‘Die Kind Is Nog Jonger’. Simone en Ernesto kom kuier in die garage en gesels oor die projek en al die kunstenaars wat betrokke was - wat mense insluit soos Anton Goosen, Inge Beckmann, Radio Rats, Somerfaan, Dirk Ace, Kalahari Surfers, Falling Mirror, Die Naaimasjiene, Terminatryx en nog vele meer. Simone gesels ook oor haar verhouding met haar ma en haar ma se skryfwerk. Kobus Moolman was born in 1964 in Pietermaritzburg. He is a senior lecturer in creative writing in the Department of English at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban. He holds a PhD in English Studies from UKZN. In 2013 he received the 2013 Sol Plaatje European Union poetry award. In the same year, he was the Mellon Writer in Residence at Rhodes University for three months, and he also published his most recent poetry anthology, Left Over (Dye Hard Press). The collection has been widely acknowledged as his strongest to date. In 2012 he was commissioned by the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State to adapt  Zakes Mda’s the novel, The Madonna of Excelsior, for the stage. The production has travelled to several theatres in the country, including the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and the State Theatre in Pretoria. In 2010 he published Light and After (Deep South Press). The collection was launched at the 14th Poetry Africa festival in Durban. In the same year he received the South African Literary Award for Poetry for his collection, Separating the Seas. Founded by the national Ministry of Arts & Culture, the South African Literary Awards honour South African literary practitioners, while encouraging the advancement of literary heritage and practice. In 2010 he was a special guest, for two months, of the Creative Writing Research Group of the University of Calgary in Canada. During this period he gave readings of his work and lectured, including at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He was also an invited guest at the 2010 Calgary International Spoken Word Festival, during which time he performed at the Banff Centre for the Arts and in Canmore. In the same year he edited and published, Tilling the Hard Soil: poetry, prose and art by   South African Writers with Disabilities (University of KwaZulu-Natal Press). He was also the invited dramaturge on a two-week residency for South African and Dutch scriptwriters organized by the Twist Theatre Development Project during the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. He was invited back as dramaturge in 2011 and 2013. In 2009 one of poems was nominated for a US Pushcart Prize. At the beginning of 2008, he participated in a three-week collaborative residency at the Caversham Centre for Writers and Artists in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. During this residency he produced a limited edition, hand-bound collection of poems entitled Anatomy. This cycle of poems was later published in the Journal of Disability Studies (OhioStateUniversity). It also won the Dramatic and Literary Rights (DALRO) Prize for the best poem to appear in New Coin magazine in 2008. A collection of his radio plays, Blind Voices, was published by Botsotso Publishers in 2007. The collection is sponsored by the British Council and features a CD of the BBC production of his earlier award-winning play, Soldier Boy. In 2008,  he was on the panel of adjudicators for the Ingrid Jonker award, and in 2009 he was a judge for the Thomas Pringle Award for Poetry.He was the founding editor of the annual KwaZulu-Natal poetry journal, Fidelities, which ran from 1995 until 2007.  As co-ordinator of the Fidelities Poetry Project he conducted creative writing workshops and readings for a variety of interest groups, from offenders in prison to high school youth.  From 2000 to 2009 he edited the poetry titles for the University of KwaZulu-Natal Press, working on collections by Karen Press, Mxolisi Nyezwa, Kelwyn Sole and Makhosazana Xaba, amongst others. In 2007 he was also named joint winner of the 2007 NLDTF/PANSA Festival of Contemporary Theatre Readings of New Writing for his new play, Stone Angel. This is the second time he has won this major South African award for theatre writing. This from contemporary writers: One of South Africa's most distinguished writers, André Brink was born in 1935. Poet, novelist, essayist and teacher, he began work as a University lecturer in Afrikaans and Dutch Literature in the 1960s. He began writing in Afrikaans, but when censored by the South African government, began to also write in English and became published overseas. He remains a key figure in the modernisation of the Afrikaans language novel. His novel, A Dry White Season (1979), was made into a film starring Marlon Brando while An Instant in the Wind (1976), the story of a relationship between a white woman and a black man, and Rumours of Rain (1978) were both shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Fiction.  Devil's Valley (1998) explores the life of a community locked away from the rest of the world, and The Other Side of Silence (2002), set in colonial Africa in the early twentieth century, won a Commonwealth Writers regional award for Best Book in 2003. He has also written a collection of essays on literature and politics, Reinventing a Continent (1996), prefaced by Nelson Mandela.  He is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Cape Town. His latest novels are Praying Mantis (2005) and The Blue Door (2007). His memoir, A Fork in the Road was published in 2009 I met Andre Brink at his home in Cape Town. (His lovely young wife Karina greeted me at the door and led me into his book-lined study).  Once seated we talked mostly about his life, about his father, about love and duty, justice, Apartheid, inter-racial sex, J.M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer; his love affair with poet Ingrid Jonker, her suicide, her poem ‘Plant me a Tree,' English as his second language, Picasso, recommended wines and staying in South Africa despite his nephew having been shot dead by intruders at his home just north of Johannesburg.
