In this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, Tim talks exclusively to former Arsenal striker Lianne Sanderson. Lianne scored 41 goals for the Gunners during their record breaking 2006-07 quadruple winning season and started both legs of the historic 2007 UWCL Final against Umea. Lianne chats with Tim about the camaraderie that underpinned the team, the role of then assistant manager Emma Hayes on the UWCL campaign, how Arsenal responded to their best player Kelly Smith being suspended for both legs of the final and how the team adapted to being huge underdogs against Umea. Lianne also talks about her affection for the club all these years later, her pride at seeing the quadruple winning team on the side of the Emirates and her hope that Arsenal can do it again in Lisbon against Barcelona.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog's award winning coverage of Arsenal Women by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast. “They've got HUGE djunts!”   MESHUGGAH, the Nordic Godfathers of Djent (“Djunt”) hailing from Umea, Sweden, sound like the logical evolution of extreme metal to emerge out of the early 90's thrash scene. Tempered with their own surgically precise, ferociously complex, polyrhythmic brand of math metal genius, MESHUGGAH have carved out their own unique place in metal by blending their unmistakable signature style with all the best elements of thrash metal, death metal, and extremely technical, progressive, groove metal into a potent new subgenre known simply as “djent” (or “djunt” as it is lovingly known in the Bunkerpoon).    Get ready to enjoy “a perfect pour” and more “djunts” than you can shake a stick at as we decipher some “mind-blowing” misheard lyrics from the King of Pop while enjoying some al fresco dining at “The Front Door Café”.  Prepare to experience the most horrifically ironic yet comedically perfect timing in history (because “you can't like everything”) and understand that there are some albums where “you just don't skip” a track.  JOIN US as we plunge deep INSIDE THE METAL to better understand why Count von Count is the world's biggest superfan of the 3-plus decades of brutally progressive djent genius known as MESHUGGAH.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. Hardcore Punk scene, Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Bad Religion, Dag Nasty), Michael Hampton (Embrace, S.O.A.), Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys) and Brendan Canty (Fugazi, Rites of Spring). Dennis explains how he ended up in a band with some of his musical heroes, their impressive heritage and how he first discovered American Hardcore Punk. He also touches on the songwriting process, the influence of The Ruts and what to expect during their forthcoming American tour and we pick some choice cuts from "Expendables" and the Fake Names self-titled debut album. We also cover more of his many and varied current projects including the atmospheric Post-Punk of INVSN and the Punk Rock outfit Vännäs Kasino and then there's the free-form Jazz of Backengrillen which features members of Refused and the virtuoso Jazz Saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. Marjorie Woollacott, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Professor of Human Physiology, and a member of the Institute of Neuroscience, at the University of Oregon. She was chair of the Human Physiology Department for seven years. In addition to teaching courses on neuroscience and rehabilitation, she taught courses on complementary and alternative medicine and meditation. She is Research Director for the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS) and is President of the Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences (AAPS). Woollacott graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California and was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Southern California and her M.A. from the University of Oregon in Asian Studies. She was also a research professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Umea in Umea, Sweden, and in the National Center for Scientific Research in Marseille, France. Woollacott has received over 7.2 million dollars in research funding for her research in child development, aging, rehabilitation medicine and most recently, meditation.  Her areas of expertise include: 1) changes in attentional performance skills and underlying neural networks associated with the mental training of meditation and tai chi; 2) the phenomenon of spiritually transformative experiences, including near-death experiences, 3) the development of balance and attentional abilities in children and factors leading to loss of balance function in aging, and in patients with movement disorders, 4) the design of assessment and treatment strategies to improve balance and attentional abilities. These include testing the efficacy of alternative forms of therapy such as tai chi and meditation for improving both attention and balance and gait abilities in patient populations; and 5) the development of musical performance skills in musicians. Woollacott has published more than 200 scientific articles and written or co-edited eight books. She is the co-author, with Dr. Anne Shumway-Cook of the textbook for health care professionals, titled: Motor Control: Translating Research into Clinical Practice, in its 6th edition (2021). Her latest book, Infinite Awareness (2015) (winner of eight awards, including the 2017 Parapsychological Association Book Award, Eric Hoffer Book Award and the Nautilus Book Award) pairs Woollacott's research as a neuroscientist with her self-revelations about the mind's spiritual power. Between the scientific and spiritual worlds, she breaks open the definition of human consciousness to investigate the existence of a non-physical and infinitely powerful mind.

Episode 132: Martin Kulldorff discusses vaccines, lockdowns, school closings and the global response to COVID-19

Our guest today describes the global response to COVID-19 as one of the biggest public-health fiascos in history. As you would expect, he gained quite a bit of notoriety for this contrarian view. Dr. Martin Kulldorff is an epidemiologist and biostatistician who has spent the past 30 years researching infectious diseases as well as the efficacy and safety of vaccines. He is internationally known for his statistical and epidemiological methods for the early detection and monitoring of infectious diseases. A former Harvard Medical School professor who today is the Senior Scientific Officer at the Brownstone Institute, Martin worked with the Centers for Disease Control on its current system for monitoring potential vaccine risks. Today, the U.S. and other countries around the world use Martin's detection methods to monitor COVID-19. Martin made national headlines in October of 2020 when he and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford and Dr. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford published the Great Barrington Declaration, a paper that questions school closings, lockdowns, travel restrictions and other governmental responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The three authors recommended “focused protection” instead, a policy of protecting senior citizens and others who are most at risk of dying from COVID while allowing young people and others who face minimal risk of death to resume their normal lives. The three authors were immediately skewered for what critics called a radically dangerous approach for pandemic management. At STEM-Talk, however, we appreciate that a curious, open, and even skeptical mind is at the heart of the scientific method. Because of that, we have invited Martin to sit down with us to discuss the Great Barrington Declaration as well as his views about pandemics and the best ways to safeguard the public. We also review with Martin the age-adjusted mortality rates of states like Florida, New York and California which had quite different responses to COVID-19. Ironically, co-host Dawn Kernagis learned on the morning of our interview with Martin that she had contacted COVID. So, she has to skip today's discussion. (Note to listeners: It was just a mild case and Dawn is already back on her feet.) But in today's fascinating episode, Martin and host Ken Ford discuss: -- The safety of vaccines, including the coronavirus vaccines. -- Martin's thoughts about the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children. -- The Great Barrington Declaration and the concerns it raised about the physical, mental-health and economic impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 responses. -- The effectiveness of natural immunity compared to vaccine-induced immunity. -- Whether hospitals should be hiring caregivers with natural immunity rather than firing them. -- Martin's thoughts about Sweden, which was the only Western nation that did not impose lockdowns or close its schools and daycare centers in response to COVID-19. -- What age-adjusted COVID mortality rates for the U.S. have to say about the different approaches states used in response to the pandemic. Show notes: [00:05:20] Ken opens the interview mentioning that Martin was born in Lund in 1962 in southern Sweden, but grew up in Umea, a university town in northeast Sweden. Ken asks what prompted Martin's family to move to Umea when he was two years old. [00:05:47] Ken mentions as an aside that he once spent an enjoyable week at the University of Umea visiting Lars-Erick Janlert.  Ken served as the external expert for a PhD dissertation. [00:07:00] Ken asks Martin what he was like as a child. [00:07:32] Ken asks what drew Martin to math, and if it came naturally to him. [00:08:15] Martin talks about his decision to attend Umea University and major in mathematical statistics. [00:09:09] Ken asks why Martin moved to the United States and to attend Cornell University as a Fullbright Fellow for his postgraduate studies, and why he decided to earn his Ph.D.

I don't wanna be buried in a podcast sematary.

Melati Suryodarmo, (b. 1969, Solo, Indonesia) graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunscheweig, Germany under the tutelage of Marina Abramović and Anzu Furukawa with a Meisterschüler qualification in Performance Art. Her practice is informed by Butoh, dance and history, among others. Her work is the result of ongoing research in the movements of the body and its relationship to the self and the world. These are enshrined in photography, translated into choreographed dances, enacted in video or executed in live performances. Suryodarmo is interested in the psychological and physical agitations that may be from the self or the world but somehow result in lasting change the individual. This belief in change or growth through bodily action belies her early induction in meditation, which she continues to practice. The body is the home for memories and the self, rather than the individual itself, and the body's system. The way the body translates internal and external ideas enriches the attitude and thoughts of the self. Meeting Furukawa, an accomplished Butoh practitioner, had opened her eyes on the expressive qualities of the body, a form of communication that transcends verbal language. This experience has motivated her lifelong studies into Butoh and other artistic forms concerned with the human body. As a trained performance artist, presence is integral to the accomplishment of Suryodarmo's work in all mediums. The senses picks up non-verbal inputs and receive them as communication of intent, emotion, energy or identity. These non-verbal inputs open the door to sensitive and individual perception and the creation of presence. However, everyone processes these inputs differently and interpret them differently based on their unique consciousness. By compiling, extracting, conceptualising and translating some of these factors of presence that she recognises into her work, she intends to tease open the fluid border between the body and its environment. These movements are understood through the metaphor of poets, who similarly assembles words and spaces to create their poetry. Suryodarmo draws inspiration from her real experiences in the world. The path of history informs her perception of the everyday and the now. Her works often reflect the process that lead to current events, be it political, global or highly personal. In her abstracted gestures and poetical acts, the presence of each work is brought to a concentrated level of intensity. In abstracting these acts from their common context, they are made to correspond with new associations and sometimes identify radically with different meanings. The works' abstract narrative throws the spotlight on the audience's bodily response. This often results in a level of factual absurdity in the work, which is acknowledged and welcome. Suryodarmo has presented her work in various international festivals and exhibitions, including Reanacting History: Collective Actions and Everyday Gestures (2017), National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Gwacheon, South Korea; SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now (2017), National Art Centre Tokyo & Mori Art Museum, travelled to Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; AFTERWORK (2016), Para Site, Hong Kong, travelled to (2017) Ilham Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; East Asia Feminism: FANTasia (2015), Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea; 8th Asia Pacific Triennale (2015), Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland, Australia; 5th Guangzhou Triennale (2015), Guangzhou, China; The Roving Eye: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia (2014), Arter, Istanbul, Turkey; Medium at Large (2014), Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; Luminato Festival (2012), Toronto, Canada; Beyond the Self: Contemporary Portraiture from Asia (2011), National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, Australia; Marina Abramović Presents… (2009), Manchester International Festival, Manchester, U.K.; Incheon Women Artists' Biennale (2009), Incheon, South Korea; Manifesta 7 (2008), Bolzano, Italy; Wind from the East: Perspectives on Asian Contemporary Art (2007), Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland. Since 2007, Suryodarmo has been organizing an annual Performance Art Laboratory and Undisclosed Territory, a performance art festival, in Solo, Indonesia. In 2012, she founded “Studio Plesungan”, an art space for performance artists to use as a laboratory. In 2017, she served as Artistic Director for Jiwa, the 17th Jakarta Biennale. She currently lives and works between Gross Gleidingen, Germany and Solo, Indonesia.Artist StatementThe world that inspires me to move my thoughts is the world inside me. The body becomeslike a home which functions as container of memories, living organism. The systeminside the psychological body that changes all the time has enriched my idea to developnew structures of attitude and thoughts. I try to perceive my surroundings as the fact ofthe real presence of now, but considering the path of its history. I try to understand thelanguage that are not spoken, and opens the door of perceptions. I respect the freedom inour minds to perceive things coming through our individual sensory register system.Crossing the boundaries of cultural and political encounters has been a challenge thatstimulates me discovering new identification. An effort to find identity is yet a dangerousact of losing the ground of origin. For me, the process of making artwork is a life long researchthat never stops me to put myself inside the metamorphic constellation. I intend totouch the fluid border between the body and its environment through my art works. I aimto create a concentrated level of intensity without the use of narrative structures. Talkingabout politics, society or psychology makes no sense to me if the nerves are not able todigest the information. I love it when a performance reaches a level of factual absurdity.Melati Suryodarmo's performances have been dealing with the relationship between ahuman body, a culture in which it belongs to and a constellation where it lives. Through thepresence, she compiles, extracts, conceptualized and translates some phenomenon orsubjects into movement, actions, and gestures that are specified to her performance.

CORRECTIONS & CLARIFICATIONS In Hotwire #44 we named Kevin Garrido, prisoner of the Chilean state who was reportedly murdered by another prisoner, as an anarchist. Comrades in and out of Chile have gotten in touch with us to let us know that that is not true, and that Kevin purposefully did not identify as an anarchist, and has even identified with more eco-extremist currents. Sorry for the lazy reporting, but in our defense we even did additional research beyond where we first got the story and multiple other sources identified him as an anarchist or tagged his story under “anarchist prisoners” or something else of the sort. Kevin did extend solidarity to at least some anarchist prisoners for their struggles, anarchists were present in his funeral caravan that clashed with police, and regardless of his politics, we still uphold what we said about, “While the state may charge [another prisoner] with [his] murder, we know that the police and prisons are responsible for the conditions that led to Garrido's death, and the only kind of justice for his death will come from redirecting any aggression between the oppressed against their oppressors instead, until neither prisons not police can function.”

The theme of next year's calendar is Health/Care, and it features art and writing from current and former political prisoners like David Gilbert, Mike and Chuck Africa, and Laura Whitehorn. If you buy 10 or more, be sure to use the discount code “BULK” to get 10 or more calendars for $10 each—you can then sell the calendars to fundraise for your own organizing. CORRECTIONS & CLARIFICATIONS In Hotwire #43, we said that there was an unpermitted crowd that forced Trump's motorcade to turn around outside the Tree of Life synagogue. There were massive protests, but despite this report we haven't been able to confirm that the protests, in fact, disrupted Trump's motorcade. Blue Ridge Anarchist Black Cross informed us that political prisoner Ed Poindexter only has one good eye, due to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services denying him much needed cataract eye surgery. If you write him a letter, as we requested last week, please write IN LARGE, BOLD PRINT.

Jamer Hunt is the Vice Provost for Transdisciplinary Initiatives at The New School, where he was a founding director (2009-2015) of the graduate program in Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons School of Design. He is also Visiting Design Researcher at the Institute of Design in Umea, Sweden. With Paola Antonelli at the MoMA he was co-creator of the award-winning, curatorial experiment and book Design and Violence (2013-15), as well as collaborating on the Head Space: On Scent as Design and The Design and the Elastic Mind symposium. He is the co-founder of Design Philadelphia; the country's largest design week and he is one of Fast Company's “Most Creative People…Inspiring Leaders [who] are Shaping the Future of Business in Creative Ways.” He has published over twenty articles on the poetics and politics of design, including for Fast Company and the Huffington Post, and he is co-author, with Meredith Davis, of Visual Communication Design. He is currently completing a book manuscript for Grand Central Publishing on scale, complex systems, and the unruliness of everyday experiences. In today's episode we talk to Jamer about his career path from anthropology to design; the different perspectives on the definition and scope of an intervention; the ways in which designers & social scientists view the practice of ethnography, participation and co-creation. We talk about places where design and social science blend together, what they can bring to each other as well as what they can create together; tips on how to successfully form and operate multidisciplinary teams. Lastly, we cover the role of the university space in supporting the practice of anthropology outside of academia. My very special guest this week is Linn Larsson. She is a Research Program Manager at Facebook in London. She joined Facebook in 2014 in their Dublin office. She has a Bachelor of Science, Business and Psychology from Umea University in Sweden and a Masters of Science in Consumer business and marketing from Stockholm Business School.
She's original from Umea, Sweden, a small town 300 miles south of the arctic circle where in the winter the sun rises at 11 am and sets at 1 pm. Whats so interesting about her story is how the Swedes focus on business education, lead Linn to start her Facebook career in the Dublin office and then continue to great heights after a transfer to the London office, where she manages the operations for eighteen full-time user experience researchers.

 Welcome, Linn!

For the last 13 years, Peter Lundgren has been mixing magazines with t-shirts: each 'issue' of T-Post is a high quality, ethically produced t-shirt with a graphic on the front and a story printed inside. He runs his apparel publishing empire from Umea in northern Sweden, but we lured him down to speak at this year's EDCH conference in Munich, so I caught up with him there to record this podcast conversation and find out about how he reaches new customers, how marketing has changed over the last 13 years, and why ethical choices need to be visible.

We are talking tendons again in this podcast because the next International Scientific Tendinopathy Symposium has been scheduled for September 5 and 6 in Oxford, UK. This exciting event follows on from two successful conferences in Vancouver in 2012 and Umea in 2010. The consensus paper from the Vancouver conference is open access in the June 2013 edition of BJSM [http://bit.ly/13fLIN1]. In this podcast I am talking to with Dr Mark Thompson, a biomedical engineer from Oxford University, who leads the Oxford Mechanobiology Group. Amongst other things he is working with Prof Andy Carr, who has a large number of publications particularly on the rotator cuff tendon. Mark discusses the mechanics of tendon and tendinopathy, and how mechanics contribute to the clinical perspectives of the condition.
