Abortions would be illegal in Iowa once a fetal heartbeat can be detected under a pair of requests Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday she plans to submit to Iowa courts. The Republican governor announced that, in the wake of last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, she will ask the Iowa Supreme Court to rehear a recent case on abortion regulations so the state court can establish what legal standards can be applied to abortion restrictions in Iowa. And Reynolds said she will ask the state courts to lift an injunction on the so-called “fetal heartbeat” law that was passed in 2018 but immediately stopped by the courts. For now, abortion remains legal in Iowa until 20 weeks of pregnancy. According to Gazette reporting, members who currently serve on Iowa's Board of Regents have made monetary and in-kind political donations totaling nearly $339,500 since 2019 — primarily to Republicans, with the majority going either to Gov. Kim Reynolds, who makes appointments to the board, or to the Republican Party of Iowa. Iowa Code requires the nine-member board governing the state's public universities to have gender and political balance, meaning it can't have more than five members of the same gender or political party. The current board includes five women and four men, with five reporting Republican affiliation, three identifying as independent and one, Nancy Dunkel, marked a Democrat. JC Risewick, appointed last week. has given Reynolds almost $60,000 since 2020 — $40,000 of which were in-kind donations in the form of flights. State law doesn't restrict or regulate regent political giving. Neither does regent policy, although it does cover potential conflicts of interest with the universities themselves. University of Iowa Athletics must turn over all materials former players have requested from an “independent and external review” of the Hawkeye football program — including reports on specific coaches — despite UI assertions the records are subject to “attorney-client privilege” and should be private. Former Hawkeye football players are suing the University of Iowa and some athletics staffers for racially motivated discrimination and harassment. The UI in early 2020 hired a law firm Husch Blackwell to investigate the football program's culture after numerous former players went public with allegations of racism and discrimination — leading to the university's $1.3 million separation deal with former strength coach, Chris Doyle. As part of its review, the law firm interviewed current and former players and employees and produced a report confirming the program “perpetuated racial or cultural biases and diminished the value of cultural diversity.” Documents the players in the lawsuit want include Doyle's performance evaluations and Husch Blackwell personnel reports on Coach Kirk Ferentz, assistant coaches Brian Ferentz and Seth Wallace, and Doyle.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Friday, June 11. It's going to be hot again on Friday, but this time it might actually rain a bit. Maybe. According to the National Weather Service there will be a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms in the Cedar Rapids area after 1 p.m. The chance will increase to 40 percent as Friday heads into Saturday. Rain or not, it is definitely going to be hot, with a predicted high of 94 degrees. You wouldn't know it from all the moisture hanging around in the air, but most of Iowa is in a drought. Nearly 90 percent of the state is experiencing some degree of drought according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. While rain did bring some relief in May, it was still below average, and the dry and hot weather in June has erased the gains. It will no longer be a dry Kinnick Stadium this fall. A decade after University of Iowa Athletics launched a “Think Before They Drink” campaign aimed at curbing football-related binging, the department on Thursday announced its expanding alcohol sales at athletic events, including football, basketball, baseball, softball and wrestling. Acknowledging risks that come with expanding beer and wine access to the game-going public, the department has committed 30 percent of its net alcohol sales to the research-based initiatives developed and supported by the UI Alcohol Harm Reduction Committee. The decision comes after the University of Iowa athletics department has reported millions of dollars in budget deficits due, in large part, to disruptions caused by COVID-19. Two seriously injured children remained hospitalized Thursday after their rented scooter ran a stop sign and was hit by a driver whose license was suspended. Cedar Rapids police said the boys were both riding on a single VeoRide scooter in the alley between 15th Street SE and Camburn Court SE just after 4 p.m. Wednesday when they turned onto Mount Vernon Road SE. They were struck by a westbound 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Dennis Lee Candler, 64, of Cedar Rapids, police said. Candler was ticketed for driving on a suspended license and failure to provide proof of liability insurance. Based on witness accounts and video surveillance, the boys were not wearing helmets and did not stop at a stop sign before turning onto Mount Vernon Road, police said. The two boys were taken to University of Iowa Hospitals for treatment of life threatening injuries. Gov. Kim Reynolds' office said Thursday it learned that 19 refugee children were flown last month to Des Moines and taken to sponsor families, despite the Republican governor's rejection of the Democratic Biden administration's request that Iowa accept immigrant kids. Reynolds and Democratic U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne both said the federal government withheld information on the flight despite repeated requests from their respective offices. Axne joined Reynolds in criticizing the Biden administration for its responses -- or lack thereof -- to Iowa officials and also joined in the call for more investigation into the matter. None of the University of Iowa’s contracted football coaches — including head coach Kirk Ferentz — participated in the voluntary salary reductions that UI Athletics announced last summer in light of massive pandemic losses that officials cited weeks later in justifying their decision to cut four Hawkeye sports. https://www.thegazette.com/hawkeye-football/no-university-of-iowa-football-coaches-took-pay-cuts-amid-pandemic-including-ferentz/ (That report was published Friday by The Gazette) after requesting and reviewing public records. The Gazette’s Leah Vann and Vanessa Miller discuss the findings, why it was reported and what it means on a new episode of the On Iowa Podcast.
In the latest episode of the HF Mailbag Podcast, we discuss the coaches Iowa Athletics can least afford to lose, the NFL Draft, the impact of a new university president on Hawkeye Sports, if Iowa will add to its men's basketball roster and more.
Todd and Alex talk to Scott Dochterman about Iowa Athletics on this Monday edition of the show.

Today's going to start out cloudy, but get more sunny as the day goes on, with a high of 36, meaning that snow's going to keep melting. Tomorrow night will be cloudy with a high of 18. University of Iowa argues to dismiss former football player lawsuit https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/education/university-iowa-hawkeyes-gary-barta-player-lawsuit-discrimination-20210223 Responding to a federal complaint accusing University of Iowa Athletics and football coaches of mistreating and discriminating against Black players, the state wants the case dismissed. While a UI-sanctioned independent investigation found football program rules “perpetrated racial and cultural biases,” and coaches admitted and apologized for shortcomings, UI attorneys argue the player lawsuit “should be dismissed for failure to assert sufficient factual allegations.” Cedar Rapids man wanted in connection with Rodeway Inn homicide dies three days after he was shot fleeing scene https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/arnell-states-dies-suspect-in-cedar-rapids-rodeway-inn-stabbing-20210223 (https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/arnell-states-dies-suspect-in-cedar-rapids-rodeway-inn-stabbing-20210223) The suspect wanted in connection with a fatal weekend stabbing died Tuesday from injuries suffered in the shooting with a police officer as he fled the scene Arnell States, 39, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday at an area hospital. Iowa universities distribute less financial aid as enrollment drops Iowa's public universities, along with the state and federal government, awarded less financial aid to students last budget year as enrollment at the campuses fell. But with COVID-19 further driving down enrollment while driving up the need for tuition help, the universities have stressed the importance of financial aid to lawmakers now deciding how much to appropriate the campuses and to families weighing where to send their students — and their money. Although the drop primarily was tied to enrollment losses, the percent of financial need met for University of Iowa undergraduates from 2017-18 to 2019-20 slid from 67 percent for residents and 57 percent for non-residents to 56 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, February 17. We are going to do it, everyone. We are going to break a high in the positive double digits. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area Wednesday with a high near 13 degrees. I regretfully must inform you that the wind chill will be 25 degrees below zero, and there will be a chance for fog in the early morning and a chance for light snow flurries after noon. But still, progress is progress. It was a very busy day in the Iowa legislature. I will attempt to summarize some of the key happenings for you. The Iowa House nearly unanimously passed a bill requiring Iowa K-12 schools to administer the Pledge of Allegiance and to show the U.S. flag every day. Iowa is one of the few states that does not formally address this practice already. Children are allowed to opt out of this as they choose due to a 1943 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. A bill cleared a Senate subcommittee that would require parents to be informed if a school's curriculum included discussions about gender identity. Under the bill, these students could opt out of instruction about gender identity if parents did not give students in grades 1-6 permission to learn about it. The bill was supported by Republican and conservative Christian lobbyists, while being opposed by Democrats, education lobbyists, and those in support of civil and transgender rights. A bill also was passed out of a Senate subcommittee that would prevent businesses, including hospitals and healthcare providers, from requiring their employees to be vaccinated as a basis for employment-- this would include vaccination for COVID-19. The sponsors of the bill, again Republicans, voiced skepticism about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, although Dr. Caitlin Pedati, the state epidemiologist, testified before them Tuesday that vaccines are safe and essential to controlling the spread of disease in Iowa. Lobbyist declarations show that over 100 organizations have registered to oppose the bill. Only one — Informed Choice Iowa — is listed as favoring it. Although University of Iowa Athletics https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/education/university-of-iowa-to-reinstate-womens-swimming-and-diving-but-not-cut-mens-sports-20210215 (has reversed its decision) to eliminate women's swimming and diving after this season — following a court injunction requiring it do so — the university hasn't dropped its opposition to the overall court case that could have broader gender equity implications for its student athletes. Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta also confirmed that the school has no intention of reversing its decision to drop three men's sports-- men's tennis, men's gymnastics and men's swimming and diving-- despite a grassroots effort to save the sports. Citing the September lawsuit, Barta said the UI “continues to disagree” with its claims and the judge's order compelling the campus to continue offering the women's sport while the case works through court. The judge ruled that the student athletes who brought the case had a valid case that the University of Iowa had violated Title IX rules for gender equity in sports offerings. Iowa City police have identified the victim in Friday's fatal shooting. Police said Quincy H. Russom, 19, of Iowa City was shot and killed in the 600 block of South Governor Street. Police were called to an apartment building at 7:54 p.m. Friday for a report of a shooting. There, officers found Russom's body. A witness told police three men had entered the residence, shot Russom and fled. Police have said the shooting was not random, but the specifics of the homicide still are under investigation. They do not think there is a threat to the public. This briefing is sponsored in part by Corridor Careers.
