The 2024 edition of “War of the Worlds Week” starts now! In this episode, we take a listen one of the radio broadcasts that inspired the 1938 Mercury Theatre on the Air version of “The Wars of the Worlds”. This is “The Fall of the City” from the Columbia Workshop, written by Archibald MacLeish, directed and produced by Irving Reis, and starring Orson Welles. The fall of the city first aired on April 11, 1937 on CBS Radio. An unexpected prophecy from an unexpected source places a city in panic. All the events are reported from that city's radio broadcast station. Some of this probably sounds familiar to the 1938 “War of the Worlds” fans. The similarities don't stop there. Listen along and find out more and enjoy, “The Fall of the City”.

In this RKO 1946 episode we discuss Crack-Up (directed by Irving Reis), an eerie noir with a couple of great Expressionist set pieces. Pat O'Brien oozes vulnerability as a WWII vet and populist art critic who has to find out who's trying to make him look, or go, insane; Claire Trevor plays the love interest who's trying to help him (or is she?). Oh yeah, and we also watched Step By Step (directed by Phil Rosen), a goofy spy drama in which Lawrence Tierney gets to play a nice guy for once. For this week's Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode we watched two films pairing acteur Lilli Palmer with then-husband Rex Harrison. We discuss the potential relationship of thriller/courtroom drama The Long Dark Hall (1951) to the scandal plaguing their marriage at the time and consider The Four Poster (1952) as a "marriage film," and what it has to say about that social and spiritual state. And in a packed Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we talk about five films from the TIFF Cinematheque's “Alone in the Arena” series: Rounders (1998), When We Were Kings (1996), He Got Game (1998), Any Given Sunday (1999), and The Color of Money (1986). To wrap up our podcasting year with a record-shattering 77th episode, Ryan is once again on a solo mission to review something that's considered a classic. And while it's always a pleasure to see Cary Grant and Myrna Loy, the  reason to cover The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer is that it represents our first Shirley Temple (Black) flick. She's one of the title characters---you can guess which one---while Cary plays the other title character in another in his long line of rom-com hits. He was the master of the smiley love stories, especially those in the screwball genre. But is either the comedy or the love story in Irving Reis' light-hearted Oscar-winner particularly convincing though? And did Shirley Temple actually wear bobby sox? That last question isn't answered in this 558th dose of Have You Ever Seen, but a lot of other ones are, as this half-hour monologue breaks down The Bachelor And The Bobby-Soxer. It was when sponsor Lever Brothers (who made Lux soap and detergent) moved the show from New York to Hollywood in 1936 that it eased back from adapting stage shows and toward adaptations of films. The first Lux film adaptation was The Legionnaire and the Lady, with Marlene Dietrich and Clark Gable, based on the film Morocco. That was followed by a Lux adaptation of The Thin Man, featuring the movie's stars, Myrna Loy and William Powell.THIS EPISODEThe Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer is a 1947 screwball comedy film starring Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Shirley Temple. The prestigious and highly experimental radio series from CBS under the direction of Irving Reis produced some excellent drama. This week a look at how time and the telephone is intertwined to produce a suspense story about death and sadness. Ironically, the telephone like the radio brought people together though radio was much more comprehensive. A first rate production.
