Their program had been officially titled The Burns And Allen Show in the fall of 1936, and they'd spent time at both NBC and CBS. With their ratings slipping in 1942, George Burns transformed their show from vaudeville-style banter into a situation comedy. It was the jolt the couple needed. In the fall of 1944 the couple was on for Lever Brothers and Swan Soap Tuesdays at 9PM eastern time from CBS. On Halloween night, Grace Allen had a make believe romance with actor Van Johnson. NBC dominated Tuesday's ratings in most timeslots, but running opposite of The Burns and Allen Show on NBC was The Molle Mystery Theater. Burns and Allen won their timeslot, but the show would still move to Monday evenings in January of 1945.

The Nigerian Scam
Scam Hall of Fame Ep 3: Agricultural marketing boards in colonial and 'independent' Nigeria

The Nigerian Scam

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 21, 2023 79:18

In our final recording of the year, we consider a little-remembered institution that laid the foundation for many state-led scams to come: the colonial and post-independence era agricultural produce marketing boards. We discussed why they were founded by the colonial state, why they became indispensable to the post-independence regional governments, how they (sort of) ended, and whether they are inherently fraudulent or can be repurposed. Enjoy... And happy holidays! **The cover poster is one of a series of more than 200, commissioned and published by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main functions were to research the production, trade and use of goods throughout the British Empire and to promote the idea of 'Buying Empire'. It organised poster campaigns, exhibitions and shop window displays, 'Empire shopping weeks', lectures, radio talks, school tours, and advertisements in the national and local press. This image, by designer Gerald Pryse, shows an exotic and romanticised view of palm oil production in Nigeria. International trade in palm oil began in the early 1800s and became the principal cargo for slave ships after the abolition of the slave trade. The development of industry in Britain had increased demand for palm oil as a machine lubricant, and trade increased rapidly. As people in Europe began to take sanitation and hygiene more seriously, demand for soap also increased, resulting in the production of oil for soap manufacture by companies such as Lever Brothers. In the early 1870s, exports of palm oil from the Niger Delta totalled about 30,000 tonnes per year. In 1897, competition for control of Nigeria's oil production resulted in the British raid on the Nigerian kingdom of Benin, and the notorious looting of the Benin bronzes. By 1911, British west African territories exported 87,000 tonnes, and Nigeria remained the world's largest exporter of palm oil until 1934. The Empire Marketing Board was closed down in September 1933, partly as a result of government cuts, although colonial governments had also proved reluctant to join it. Manchester Art Gallery was given an almost full set of the posters in 1935. Produced by some of the best artists and designers of the day, they were collected by the gallery as an example of outstanding British design and many are visually stunning. However, seen from today's perspective, their promotion of an imperial world view and use of stereotypical images of people and places makes for often uncomfortable viewing. This information was provided by curators from Manchester Art Gallery.***

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2416: Lever House Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 16 December 2023 is Lever House.Lever House is a 307-foot-tall (94 m) office building at 390 Park Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Constructed from 1950 to 1952, the building was designed by Gordon Bunshaft and Natalie de Blois of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in the International Style, a 20th-century modern architectural style. It was originally the headquarters of soap company Lever Brothers, a subsidiary of Unilever. Lever House was the second skyscraper in New York City with a glass curtain wall, after the United Nations Secretariat Building. The building has 21 office stories topped by a triple-height mechanical section. At the ground story is a courtyard and public space, with the second story overhanging the plaza on a set of columns. The remaining stories are designed as a slab occupying the northern one-quarter of the site. The slab design was chosen because it conformed with the city's 1916 Zoning Resolution while avoiding the use of setbacks. There is about 260,000 square feet (24,000 m2) of interior space in Lever House, making it much smaller than comparable office buildings in Midtown Manhattan. The construction of Lever House changed Park Avenue in Midtown from an avenue with masonry apartment buildings to one with International-style office buildings. Several other structures worldwide copied the building's design. Lever House was intended solely for Lever Brothers' use, and its small size prompted proposals to redevelop the site with a larger skyscraper. The building was nearly demolished in the 1980s, when Fisher Brothers proposed a 40-story tower on the site; afterward, it was narrowly approved as a New York City designated landmark in 1982 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places the next year. In 1997, Unilever relocated most of its offices out of Lever House, and Aby Rosen's RFR Realty took over the building. After SOM renovated the building from 2000 to 2001, Lever House was used as a standard office building with multiple tenants. SOM conducted another renovation in the early 2020s.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:58 UTC on Saturday, 16 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Lever House on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ivy Standard.

Lux Radio Theatre, a classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company in 1943–1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935–54), and NBC Radio (1954–55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand. Broadcasting from New York, the series premiered at 2:30 pm, October 14, 1934, on the NBC Blue Network with a production of Seventh Heaven starring Miriam Hopkins and John Boles in a full-hour adaptation of the 1922–24 Broadway production by Austin Strong. The host was the show's fictional producer, Douglass Garrick (portrayed by John Anthony). Doris Dagmar played another fictional character, Peggy Winthrop, who delivered the Lux commercials. Each show featured a scripted session with Garrick talking to the lead actors. Anthony appeared as Garrick from the premiere 1934 episode until June 30, 1935. Garrick was portrayed by Albert Hayes from July 29, 1935, to May 25, 1936, when the show moved to the West Coast. Famed studio executive and film producer and director Cecil B. DeMille took over as the host on June 1, 1936, continuing until January 22, 1945. That initial episode with DeMille featured stars Marlene Dietrich and Clark Gable in The Legionnaire and the Lady. On several occasions, usually when he was out of town, he was temporarily replaced by various celebrities, including Leslie Howard and Edward Arnold. Lux Radio Theatre strove to feature as many of the original stars of the original stage and film productions as possible, usually paying them $5,000 an appearance. In 1936, when sponsor manufacturer Lever Brothers (who made Lux brand soap and detergent) moved the show from New York City to Hollywood, the program began to emphasize adaptations of films rather than plays. The first Lux film adaptation was The Legionnaire and the Lady, with Marlene Dietrich and Clark Gable, based on the film Morocco. That was followed by a Lux adaptation of The Thin Man, featuring the movie's actual stars, Myrna Loy and William Powell.

Enjoy two free detective episodes of Boston Blackie w/ Dick Kollmar A) 7/16/46 The Green Line Trucking Murder B) 7/23/46 The Murdering Cuckoo Clock Everyone loves an underdog, especially one who can exchange barbs with police inspectors and prove himself smarter than the law. On radio, Boston Blackie was an ex-safecracker, constantly suspected of crimes he did not commit and forced to play the role of detective to clear his name. Girlfriend Mary Wesley assisted Blackie from time to time. As the announcer reminded listeners each week, Blackie was “enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend.” Blackie helped many underworld characters resolve their disputes with the law and was forced to defend himself against the accusations of Inspector Faraday. Looking for a summer replacement for Amos ‘n' Andy, Frederic W. Ziv test-marketed Boston Blackie nationwide. Lever Brothers sponsored the program and pitched Rinso Laundry soap. The short-run 1944 series featured Chester Morris reprising his 1941 screen role as Boston Blackie, with Richard Lane as Inspector Faraday. Blackie was aided by the Runt, a small-time hood, who also appeared in the Columbia Pictures series. For Columbia, the radio program served to cross-promote the latest Boston Blackie picture. For Ziv, the investment proved fruitful. The program was a tremendous success and quickly went into production for syndication … without Chester Morris. Beginning in 1945, Ziv released the first of what would be numerous package deals consisting of transcription discs to radio stations coast-to-coast. Broadway actor Richard Kollmar (husband to Dorothy Kilgallen) played the title role and the Runt was replaced by a character named Shorty. For the radio series, a female character was added, Mary Wesley (played by Jan Miner and Lesley Woods). In the Boston Blackie novels by Jack Boyle, Mary was Blackie's wife but Ziv thought a girlfriend, especially one who suspected Blackie of committing crimes but hoped to be proven wrong, was more interesting. Boston Blackie proved to be among Ziv's most lucrative investments, running a close second to The Cisco Kid but outshining his other radio ventures, including shows starring Red Skelton and Eddie Cantor.

Narrated by Yrsa Daley-Ward, the poet and writer introduces us to a network of lives, each one connected in one way or another through the legacy of Britain's role in slavery. Chidi grew up in London, and learned at an early age that he was descended from a late 19th Century Nigerian slave trader called Nwaubani Ogogo. He describes how he came to terms with this and the impact racial stereotyping has had on his life, while his history takes us back in time to a moment in the aftermath of the abolition of slavery, when his ancestor still had a license to trade enslaved people. The rush for Africa was beginning; Britain had turned its attention from the slave trade to palm oil. Nwaubani traded both, and was licensed to a British Corporation. British businesspeople were desperate to gain access to the palm oil which Nwaubani sold. One man in the North West of England had been trying to strike deals in Nigeria - he wanted to be able to control production and prices himself - and his company would eventually buy the corporation which was licensing Nwaubani. But in the meantime, he turned his attention to the Belgian Congo where King Leopold offered him everything he wanted. The man's name was William Lever - whose company, the Lever Brothers, would eventually become Unilever. Famous across the North of England for his philanthropic endeavours, students and alumni at the school re-founded by him - The Bolton School - are just coming to terms with his legacy. Not technically slavery, but not free labour either. Lux Radio Theatre, sometimes spelled Lux Radio Theater, a classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943–1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935–54), and NBC Radio (1954–55).

CultureNOW | A Celebration of Culture & Community

Architectural historian Carol Krinsky speaks about the history of Lever House. Midtown Manhattan's Lever House marked a watershed in American architecture when completed in 1952. Located on the west side of Park Avenue between 53rd and 54th Streets, the corporate headquarters—with its façade of blue-green glass and stainless steel mullions—was one of the first glass-walled International Style office buildings in the U.S. Three of the most notable people involved with the project include Gordon Bunshaft, the design Principal at SOM, Natalie de Blois who assisted him as the Project Designer, and Charles Luckman who was President of Lever Brothers and went on to practice architecture in New York and later LA. The building was allowed to be a rectangular tower as the zoning requirements permitted it not to be stepped if it occupied less than 25% of its site. This was the first time anyone had done this. The renovation begun in 1998 added the Isamu Noguchi sculpture garden which had been planned but never installed.

We all know the primary reason companies go into business is to make money. But is it possible for organizations to thrive financially while also doing good in the world? To answer this question, USC Marshall School of Business Professor Emeritus, Jim O’Toole spent ten years researching companies that were founded with the uncommon ambition of driving profits – while also taking on responsibility for the well-being of employees, customers & communities. In his new book, “The Enlightened Capitalists: Cautionary Tales of Business Pioneers Who Tried To Do Well By Being Good,” O’Toole tells the remarkable stories of well-known companies like Hersheys, Lever Brothers, Johnson & Johnson, Levi Strauss, Herman Miller, & Southwest Airlines. All had founders who took the road less traveled by seeking to enrich not just shareholders – but also their workers (& society overall) – tied to the belief that their businesses would perform better by doing so. What O’Toole discovered is that all of these company’s founders had the “moral courage” to operate a business by an entirely different set of rules. And almost from the beginning, virtually all of them were met with intense criticism and resistance from shareholders, competitors – even from some of their very own managers. That all these organizations survive decades or even a century later is testimony to the profound visions of their original leaders.  But as O’Toole learned, after each founder passed away, the successor CEO almost always gutted the original culture, and dismissed the very values that had helped make their companies so successful. In this podcast, we discuss the reasons why so many leaders – then and to this day – so willingly dismiss the example of leaders like Milton Hershey, James Cash Penney and Herb Kelleher who irrefutably proved that leaders can create organizations that are good for both people and profits. At the end of the podcast, I asked Professor O’Toole if, tied to everything he'd learned from researching the Enlightened Capitalists, whether putting people first is the leadership model of the future. His answer provides invaluable insight for any entrepreneur, manager or leader who seeks to excel in the 21stCentury.

Ty Danco is an outlier in a population of outliers. His interests are varied and pursued passionately. He’s founded two fintech companies, he’s invested in a gazillion startups and he’s been a hugely generous advisor to companies, in fact the chief advisor at Techstars. Oh, I forgot to mention he’s an Olympian and also deeply involved with crypto-currencies. In this really meaty interview, Ty and I covered a wide range of topics. He explained his ideas in his affably quirky way. This was a super fun conversation. Quotes: "Danco, why are you here? You're a marketing guy." And I said that I was here to see Lever Brothers and he goes, "You idiot, you signed up for Lehman Brothers." “So, I took a leave of absence from school, and Wharton let me make up my remaining credits over the summer, and so I tried doing all three things at the same time. It was a success on paper, I did make the 84 [Olympic] team, I did complete the MBA, I did work at Lehman Brothers, but in truth I was overwhelmed, I did everything badly. I ended up breaking my heel and didn't compete in Sarajevo. I learned nothing in my last classes at school and I was just lost and floundering my first year on Wall Street. So, there's a pretty obvious lesson there about the need to focus and my inability to multi-task. That's maybe why they say focus on one metric that matters, don't try to do five balls in the air at once.” Topics covered include: Ty Danco’s Bio How Ty Danco Stated His Career – Lehman Brothers vs. Lever Brothers – Olympic Team "Danco, why are you here?
