Joining us for CHNR Beyond #29.  As heard from the live broadcast from Houswerx.  Send the decks to Northern California with Uncanney B2B Jawb.  BIO: Uncanney Bio Northern California producer of 8 years and DJ of 14, Uncanney is a DNB loving, jungle enthusiast with roots in house, garage & breaks. With his distinctive multi-genre blend, he is an all-star switch hitter sliding into home no matter the time slot or the tempo. Employing a truly authentic aim to relate to his audience and that of a future era through all styles of music, as well as exhibiting an unwavering dedication to the turntablism craft. It has given him the versatility and skill sets needed to play alongside names such as Pendulum, High Contrast, Netsky, Jack Beats, AC Slater, Liquid Stranger, Caspa and more! He has been showcased throughout California at various festivals, from Outside Lands and Bottlerock, to Stilldream and Pure Vision, all while still retaining the legacy that is considered genuine local sound. He is signed to San Francisco labels like 9G and Blue Orb, as well as working with Bay Area crews such as Tech Support Recordings, Runtime DNB, HUSHconcerts, Reprezent Clothing and Higher Conscience; resulting in consistently and creatively upholding what is intrinsic to what we have come to know as West Coast Electronic Underground music.       Jawb Bio “justanotherwannabe” aka “jawb” is not the next big thing. Truthfully, he's a rather small individual with a big passion for huge sound systems. Growing up, 90s techno/trance/house took a firm hold on him. Lump that in with top40 radio, alternative, punk, rap, metal, reggae, blues, and anything else he could shove in his ears...you end up with a lifetime of chasing the music dragon. From house parties, to club spaces, renegades and warehouse undergrounds...JAWB has been there. He loves it. If he isn't in the booth with his USB he is in one of three places....inside a subwoofer, standing in the back soaking it all in, or in the bathroom doing any number of questionable things. When asked to describe his music/sets: “I used to be really specific with single genre sets and planning them out track by track, down to how I was going to transition between each one. These days, after years of playing out to different crowds in different settings, I tend to pick a handful that I know I want to play in a set, usually different genres, and I challenge myself to piece them together for the dance floor in a way that doesn't just tell a story, but actually takes you to a place that shouldn't exist. That's how I like to imagine the space anyway. I don't really follow specific labels or genres anymore, I generally follow the sounds that speak to me. Basically if it gives me that euphoria feeling, I'll likely play it out at some point in time.” Follow JAWB Soundcloud: @jawb Instagram: @jawbthestray

HPR4125: Installing Home Assistant Operating System (HAOS), on a x86-64 machine

Introduction This is a follow up episode on Home Assistant (HA), see hpr4099 :: An introduction to Home Assistant (HA) for an explanation of what Home Assistant (HA) is, and why you might want to install it. The Home Assistant Installation page offers several different install methods, listed along with the level of difficulty. Easiest: Plug and play with Home Assistant Green Easy: DIY with Raspberry Pi Intermediate: Extend with Home Assistant Yellow Hard: Install on other hardware Expert: Advanced installation methods Today we will be installing Home Assistant Operating System (HAOS), on a x86-64 machine. Home Assistant can be repurposed and installed on various hardware, such as an Odroid or a generic x86-64 machine. The Home Assistant Operating System allows you to install Home Assistant on these devices even if you have little to no Linux experience. We are going to my HP t610 Flexible Thin Client, which has a 16GB SATA Flash Drive, and I upgraded it to 16G of Ram. Note that this will install Home Assistant Operating System (HAOS) as a computer appliance. That means that it will run a bare OS with the various components in a customised docker setup. It will take over the entire computer, and requires secure boot to be disabled. On the HP t610 Flexible Thin Client, that involves pressing "Esc" at boot to get to the bootup menu. If that doesn't work try pressing "F10" just after turning on the power. Two methods to install HAOS has no integrated installer like you would expect with distro hopping, but it requires that the image be burned directly onto the disk of the computer itself. It has two methods to do this and "Method 2: Installing HAOS directly from a boot medium", is basically take the disk out of the target system and attach it to your own computer. The use a burning tool like Balena Etcher, or dd to write the image to disk. Much as you would burn a sdcard for a raspberry pi. I don't have a way to do this so let's go with method 1. Method 1: Installing HAOS via Ubuntu booting from a USB flash drive Here you download and burn live operating system as you would if you were distro hopping, the document suggests to use Ubuntu. I tried it but my HP t610 Flexible Thin Client didn't like it. It also didn't like Fedora despite having worked earlier, so I just used Debian LXQT. https://www.debian.org/download https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/debian-live-12.5.0-amd64-lxqt.iso Now you have Debian running off a usb stick on your target machine. Steps to burn Home Assistant Operating System (HAOS) to disk on target Anything after the '#' character is a comment and doesn't need to be typed. Note The following steps are optional, and you should only do them if you wish to ssh to the target machine from your pc. # Anything after the '#' charachter is a comment and doesn't need to be typed. apt install openssh-server # Install the ssh server on the target systemctl start ssh # Start it once installed passwd user # Change the password or you can just use the default which is `live` ip add # Get the IP address of the target ssh user@ip.of.the.computer # Replace ip.of.the.computer with the actual ip address in the step above Open a terminal on the machine, and type the su - commands to get root access on the Debian OS running from the usb drive on the target machine. user@debian:~$ su - Password: root@debian:~# Now you are root, the super user admin, you can install the wget command using the Debian apt package manager. root@debian:~# apt install wget Once wget is installed, we can use it to download the latest image from the HAOS Download Page, which is haos_generic-x86-64-12.1.img.xz at time of writing. root@debian:~# wget https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/releases/download/12.1/haos_generic-x86-64-12.1.img.xz Now we have the image we are going to write to the disk, but the question is which disk to write it to. Your target PC will be different to mine but the tool lsblk is good for showing what is installed and mounted. root@debian:~# lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS loop0 7:0 0 2.5G 1 loop /usr/lib/live/mount/rootfs/filesystem.squashfs /run/live/rootfs/filesystem.squashfs sda 8:0 0 14.9G 0 disk ├─sda1 8:1 0 1M 0 part ├─sda2 8:2 0 1G 0 part └─sda3 8:3 0 13.9G 0 part sdb 8:16 1 58.6G 0 disk ├─sdb1 8:17 1 3G 0 part /usr/lib/live/mount/medium │ /run/live/medium └─sdb2 8:18 1 5M 0 part The loop0 is the mount where Debian is running from, while the mounted sdb1 and sdb2 have the word live telling us that's the actual USB drive we installed Debian on to. While your disk will be different, for me the disk to install it on is sda. The partitions sda1, sda2, and sda3 are left overs from a previous install. They will be overwritten anyway. The drive I will be targeting is therefore known to the system as /dev/sda The dd command will do a disk duplication and writes the ones and zeros from the if input file, to the of output file. The command below will take a while and not display anything root@debian:~# dd if=haos_generic-x86-64-12.1.img.xz of=/dev/sda 761949+1 records in 761949+1 records out 390118272 bytes (390 MB, 372 MiB) copied, 66.3225 s, 5.9 MB/s Plug in an Ethernet cable that is connected to the network. Power the system on. If you have a screen connected to the Generic x86-64 system, after a minute or so the Home Assistant welcome banner will appear in the console. In the browser of your desktop system, within a few minutes you will be able to reach your new Home Assistant at homeassistant.local:8123. Five tips for using private wireless to digitalize mining operations

How mining demonstrates the positive impact of private wireless   Few industries showcase the benefits of a private wireless network more vividly than mining. This is a sector in which driverless 300-tonne trucks with wheels two meters wide can be operated from a control center hundreds of kilometers away.     Health and safety is a critical concern in an environment that features monster vehicles and giant machines – and frequent blasts inside a pit. Underground, the challenges are even more significant. There are thick rock walls, narrow corridors and a constantly changing route. It is simply not feasible to cover a whole site with a single antenna.    The importance of digital transformation in mining   There are four interconnected KPIs for any mining operator: Safety Sustainability Productivity Efficiency   The drive to meet these KPIs underpins most of the transformation projects in the mining industry. If there is a safety incident within a mine, production is halted. Stopping for just a few hours can mean the loss of hundreds of thousands of tonnes, which impacts on both productivity and the bottom line.    An illustration of the impact of private wireless on a mining operation   Let's look at the effect of the deployment of a private LTE-powered autonomous haulage system in an Australian mine. Its operator has more than 50 connected trucks working on collecting the ore that has been excavated.    Merely by installing the private LTE, the mine saved more than €10million through reducing the number of Wi-Fi points required. It also saw a productivity increase of about 75 hours per year per truck – which translated into 1.5 million tonnes more excavated each year. That in turn meant a top-line growth of €50million just from the improved connectivity.    The operator reported a 90 per cent drop in the number of unplanned stops. Because communication with each truck was improved, the amount of fuel consumed dropped too. There was a saving of up to 80,000 liters of diesel per truck per year.    As well as a huge cost benefit in an era of rising energy prices, this also had a big impact on the sustainability of the operation, to the tune of a carbon reduction of 236 tonnes.    How Nokia has pioneered private wireless in mining   Mining was one of the first verticals where Nokia demonstrated the viability of private wireless networks, more than ten years ago. Nokia's first project was rolled out in the Pilbara region of Australia, a major mining area.    Nokia now has more than 35 mining customers, including four out of the five biggest multi-national operators. Customers appreciate the benefits in terms of high bandwidth, low frequency, built-in security, quality of service and, most important of all, ultra-reliability.    Business continuity is crucial to mining, so a reliable network, combined with edge computing capabilities, is a winning mix. The installation of a single private wireless network can bring benefits in terms of mission-critical data applications, remotely operated machines, CCTV, video streaming, communications and a range of Internet of Things applications.    Having one single network infrastructure, which uses private wireless 4.9G or 5G technology, and that works both above the surface and underground, brings significant advantages. Underground is more challenging – radio planning and an appreciation of the tunnel structure are crucial – but ultimately the same network can be used.    Five tips for mining companies considering a digital transformation    1/ Start by consulting your operations teams. It is essential that your private wireless network solution helps to meet those key KPIs of safety, productivity and efficiency. Private wireless should not be technology for the sake of technology.   2/ Think end-to-end when you start deploying private wireless. You need to work with your whole ecosystem, not just the shovels, diggers and autonomous trucks.    3/ When you are looking at use cases, start with the low-hanging fruit. Do not try to boil the ocean from day one. There may be IoT data collection for analytics purposes, for instance, that can quickly demonstrate the value of private wireless solutions.    4/ It is essential to validate these solutions end-to-end. Make sure that the interoperability and the reliability of the entire process has been thoroughly tested before any solution is deployed in an actual mine.   5/ Look beyond the pit for digitalization opportunities. Private wireless networks bring benefits in many more verticals than just mining. Nokia also works in transportation, railways, roads, sports, shipyards and more. If you look across the whole value chain, it covers stockpiles, processing factories and transportation by rail and sea. Include all these different use cases in your business plan and you will see that private wireless makes more sense than ever.    Mining is a highly specialized industry with specific needs and challenges. However, it is also an essential activity for the world's economy and the transition to new forms of energy with the help of metals and minerals like copper and lithium. This is one reason why mining is now at the cutting edge of industrial transformation.    To learn more, please go to Nokia's private wireless podcast page.

Choosing the right private wireless network partner

Nokia Private Wireless Podcast

How can an industrial site make the right choice of private wireless network? Several varieties of private wireless networks are available – and there is also a choice of the types of provider that can deliver such a service. Our analysis of the sector has generated insight on the process facing a business or industrial site looking to make a decision on the best way to proceed. What types of private wireless coverage are available? Essentially, there are three options available to any commercial organization that is weighing up the desirability of private wireless: Local area: Ideal when there is a need for coverage around a particular site such as an airport, retail centre, industrial estate or mining operation.  Wide area: Companies such as tech logistic firms may need connectivity at their headquarters and distribution centers while also requiring coverage on a nationwide level.  Field area: Some firms need connectivity away from their base, but only in locations where they have assets. Examples include rail networks.  Overall, private networks are the best solution for industrial sites. However, there may be instances when it is economical to use a slice of a public network when it comes to wide area connectivity. In a smart city, for example, it may make sense to use a public network for non-urgent applications such as parking meter communication. Why is private wireless the best choice in local area instances? There are three reasons why this option is ideally suited for industrial sites: Familiarity: Such operations are used to effectively owning their local area networks. They are accustomed to having oversight of their connectivity and this allows them to continue doing that.  Performance: Many industrial sites are in non-urban areas, which results in less than optimal coverage. A dedicated local deployment designed to connect key elements of operational technology (OT) is ideal and will deliver the requisite levels of latency and capacity. Reliability: An essential consideration for OT critical applications. Even with dedicated small cells inside an industrial site, a connection to a public network tends to increase the latency.  What are the various types of supplier of private wireless networks? Interest in private wireless has grown significantly in the industrial sector in the last year or so. And, with more than 13 million industrial sites potentially requiring such an installation, the market place is becoming increasingly crowded. Several different genres of supplier exist: Telecom vendors: Private wireless is clearly an area of opportunity for such operations. Indeed, Nokia was one of the trend-setters in private wireless when it deployed networks for Rio Tinto at an open mine in Australia in 2015.  Mobile operators and CSPs: They have a lot to offer in this space. They have spectrum, expertise in managing 4G and 5G networks that people use every day, and good existing relationships with the enterprise space. They can also offer critical connectivity nationwide, and many have a dedicated business arm providing enterprise IT and system integration.  CSPs from the IT space: There are companies that effectively deploy a lot of edge cloud servers within enterprise. Our research shows there's a high degree of trust from enterprise in eco-system players, especially in areas such as mining and manufacturing where network connectivity is a key component of a complete end-to-end solution. IT players and system integrators: Firms such as Accenture or DXC can deliver private wireless solutions to customers. System integrators and consulting firms: They are interested in private wireless as a key enabler for related industries. Access to spectrum is a key private wireless network consideration Increasing numbers of countries are releasing spectrum that can be used for this purpose. France was one of the first, as were Germany, the UK and the US.  However, in markets that have not release vertical spectrum yet, organizations may have to work with a partner that can bring spectrum to the table. Mobile operators are an obvious example; Nokia, as part of its private wireless offering, has links with many spectrum owners.  There is also the option of using unlicensed spectrum. Wi-fi 5G uses a technology called multi-fire that allows the operation of LTE 4.9G and, while there may be a few limitations, users can still derive most of the benefits in security, mobility and capacity.  What types of architecture are available when creating a private wireless network? There are, effectively, three choices of main architecture available, with considerable variance between the options: Autonomous private wireless network: All functions, including the core, management and application, are deployed locally at the site. This is the version Nokia has been deploying since 2015. Private wireless as a service (pWaaS): Nokia was the first to offer this option, in which all parts of the core networks and the application are deployed locally but the management elements sit in the cloud or your own data center.  Core slicing: You have the minimum core elements and applications that you need locally, but the rest are run by a service provider in its own servers and cloud. This is the most economical option.  The choice of architecture depends strictly on the enterprise in question – there are no definitively good or bad options here. All organizations want the benefits of reliability, good coverage, multi-user capacity, low latency and security that private wireless networks provide, but each will have different strategies and numbers of sites, as well as varying levels of critical connectivity required.  All three options can serve those needs, but core slicing may be more suitable for the SME market, where firms are not willing to invest heavily in private wireless.  Telecom vendors are able to focus on the first two options, but some CSPs are looking at all three in the belief that they can offer a solution ideal for each segment of the market.  How will these three options develop as the private wireless market matures? In the last year, there has been increasing demand for pWaaS, particularly for industrial sites. This meets all the requirements without some of the complexity that an autonomous system can entail. It is a solution with a lower entry cost and easier access, which is easier to scale over time.  However, while pWaaS is likely to grow in size and demand among industrial sites, autonomous private wireless networks will remain the favorite option, especially among organizations with larger networks.  The option of having coverage within a site and while out and about remains highly attractive. It is customizable while offering additional capability and control. At the same time, core slicing may be a very attractive proposition for SMEs who want the benefits of private wireless networks but don't have the capability to manage it.  It will be fascinating to see how the market place develops in the years to come.

How MulteFire is creating and supporting opportunities in private wireless Nokia, along with Qualcomm, created the MulteFire Alliance in 2015. Its purpose was to create a global ecosystem for the deployment of 4G LTE in configurations that used unlicensed spectrums, and to create MulteFire specifications.  In the years since, these specifications have been embedded into the 3GPP standards. One example is the additive Listen Before Talk, known as LBT, which helps to ensure smart co-existence with local wi-fi networks. Industries have realised they need cellular connectivity, particularly LTE or 5G, to digitalize operations and activate new use cases. As a result, private wireless networks are now deployed across the world. However, in some cases deployment faces a bottleneck in the form of spectrum. In some countries, there is limited LTE spectrum; in the UK, for instance, there is less than 20MHz of spectrum bandwidth available for industries, which need a lot of capacity for data-hungry applications such as video surveillance. Some other nations do not have a coherent policy in terms of LTE license allocations for industrial sites. They are often too expensive, or not yet adapted to the context. There is also an increasing demand for temporary LTE cellular networks for events, field hospitals or even construction sites. MulteFire delivers a solution to all these problems. It has 450MHz of bandwidth in the 5GHz frequency band, comes with zero cost, is easy to access and is available in most countries. In the context of the scarcity of spectrum, MulteFire is a gold mine. MulteFire is much more than an enhanced version of wi-fi MulteFire is unlicensed, and it leverages some of wi-fi's spectrum bands. It is, however, far more than simply “wi-fi on steroids”. There are some critical advantages to MulteFire, particularly in the context of Industry 4.0. Coverage: Industrial sites are complex, with walls and panels and plenty of metal, which means radio planning can be a nightmare. MulteFire leverages the capability of 3GPP LTE 4G features, which means one of its access points can deliver the same coverage as more than four wi-fi access points. This makes it a far more compelling deployment than wi-fi. Mobility: This is vital for many industrial applications, such as autonomous mobile robots. They move around a site, which means network connectivity must be always on, everywhere. Wi-fi does not support handovers between access points, so it cannot support this type of business-critical use case, whereas MulteFire can. Security: MulteFire is a 3GPP technology with SIM authentication and end-to-end encryption, which makes it superior to wi-fi in an age of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks. How Nokia's MulteFire modem is blazing a trail Nokia recently announced industry's first certified MulteFire user equipment, the MulteFire modem. This is a field router that connects to assets such as sensors and machines via USB or Ethernet, and enables them to connect to a private wireless network using MulteFire certified access points. We use the same architecture and core network as our private wireless network, the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud. The combination of MulteFire, where no spectrum authorization is needed, and NDAC makes it simple for anyone to deploy a private network anywhere in the world. Nokia is recognized by major industry analysts as not just a leader, but the leader in this field. We have several hundred customers and are adding dozens more every quarter. Our expertise and experience in the various sectors, regions and countries sets Nokia apart. While LTE licenses can be a barrier in some countries, with MulteFire it is possible to deliver connectivity in any country in the world. This new innovation will drive the MulteFire ecosystem via the MulteFire Alliance. For more insights around all things private, 4.9G, LTE and 5G, please contact the private wireless team at Nokia.

Why Nokia is so excited about 5G and private wireless technology At Nokia, we are very excited about 5G. This is the first technology of its kind that has been designed from the start with industry in mind. Over time, it will bring significant improvement to almost 100% of industrial use cases. That's why we have launched the industry's first commercial, 5G SA private wireless solution. We felt the time was right because the 5G architect of the future is set to be the base for all industrial innovation. Its features include ultra reliability, low latency, time-sensitivity and communication. All of these factors represent a leap forward compared to 4.9G and LTE. We want to provide the whole system and our partners with a highly reliable system that can really help to accelerate the 5G ecosystem. We want to show them what 5G can do, so that the ecosystem players can integrate this chipset inside their next generation systems. That element of ecosystem will help to kick-start the market. Without industrial systems and devices, you are quite limited in what you can do in real operation with a private 5G network. On top of the need for 5G spectrum, and the fact that industrial OEMs have a slow refresh cycle, we don't foresee an overwhelming volume of 5G private wireless pick-up until about 2025. And 5G private wireless might not overtake private wireless based on 4.9G LTE until the end of the decade. 4.9G capabilities mean a smooth transition to 5G One of the reasons for this is that 4.9G includes capabilities that will stay on in the age of 5G. For example, LTE-M and Narrowband IoT provide the very deep and wide connectivity for low power, but long battery life, sensor – which is really important for many enterprise applications. Most private wireless solutions today that run 4.9G can and will provide a smooth evolution to 5G, which will be important in the coming years. 4G dates back several years but, like a good wine, it has got better with age. With every new release from 3GPP, the technology has been enhanced. Plenty of critical connectivity and IoT features have been added, with the result that the most recent version was called 4.9G. Automotive sector in top gear for the drive to 5G private networks To put things in perspective, the private cellular market in 2021 remains about LTE rather than 5G in real terms. While key pieces of the 5G ecosystem are being developed, the good news is that 4.9G LTE can handle the lion's share of current industry use cases. Most of Nokia's customer deployments in the last couple of years have been very much based on 4.9G LTE, and we anticipate that many of our customers will be running 4.9G LTE – maybe with 5G – for at least the next five to ten years. Private wireless based on 4.9G LTE already provides massive leaps in capability and performance compared to former or existing wireless technology. Nevertheless, there are some specific markets where there is a bigger drive towards 5G than others. That early demand is particularly visible in the automotive manufacturing industry. The reason for this is that OEMs are designing today the factories that will build cars in five or six years' time. They are eager to get their hands on a private wireless 5G capability that will drive the 5G industrial ecosystem space and ensure that when they build those factories, they can instantly take advantage of 5G. Quest for innovation in cellular communication is nothing new We should not forget that the history of cellular communication technology goes back nearly 30 years. Both 4G and 5G come from a standards body called 3GPP, which represents a large group of different shareholders, both in the telecoms space and the industry. The first technology that came from this group was GSM, or 2G, back in 1992, which is when the mobile phone became mass market. That was followed by 3G UMTS, before the creation of what we call today LTE or 4G in 2008. The common DNA for voice technology was the need to bring consumer and enterprise users a reliable mobile service, whether voice or data, in all possible environments. So the quest for innovation, and the need for reliable wireless communication, is not new. But it's only in the last three of four years that the industry has realized the potential of reliable high-speed wireless data networks in commercial sites. We are now in a position where Industry 4.0, and the digitalization that you need, is happening now. By adopting early, with applications such as digital twins, you can start reaping the benefits of increased flexibility, efficiency, resilience and sustainability. There are plenty of benefits to connecting assets now, and getting real-time data, and an overview of what's happening at your sites. And, when the time does come for 5G, you'll be in a better position to make a smooth upgrade to add it to your sites. Permits will be issued on a first come, first served basis, and for those who have already applied for the DMP lottery prior to the Oct 1 deadline can secure up to two more DMPs in the areas above without having to pay another application fee. Hunters that did not apply during the open lottery period will be subject to the $10 fee. EHD impacted WMUs that may have not issued all their DMPs will not see this supplemental issuance. We are still waiting for that first frost and with Halloween fast-approaching, bowhunters are still reminded to report any observed dead deer to DEC. The return to Eastern Standard Time, the end of Daylight Savings Time, occurs on Sunday November 7, 2021 this year. Comment periods are still open for the proposed county opt out on the holiday hunt, through November 14. Hunters are urged to participate, as among the many issues that make this a terrible regulation, enforcement will be impossible, and must be done by the county Sheriff in counties that wind up opting out, and they do not have the same powers as ECOs. Also, the proposed new guidelines for PFOA, PFOS and 1,4 Dioxane in drinking water and MCLs in raw water have that public comment period through November 5. Please take the time to submit your comments on that as well. Seems like ocean life is being better protected from these emerging contaminants than frsshwater life, which contradicts the end game of health drinking water. Election day is fast approaching, and early voting in NY has begun on Oct 23. November 2 is election day this year, and although this election is local races only, 5 proposed NY Constitutional Amendments are also on the ballot, including Proposal 2, the Environmental Rights Amendment, which is so open-ended and vague that it amounts to very bad law. Also on the ballot are those Erie County legislators that voted opposed to the youth bill. If you live in the districts represented by these 5 who do not support parental rights, you may want to consider electing a new legislator. CAWTILE is collecting comments and positions on OWT in Lake Erie from the local candidates that will give a position statement. Check their Facebook Group for these statements from the candidates. An information meeting will be held November 15 at Southtowns Walleye Association. This public hearing will provide all the information needed that has been suppressed by the wind supporters. More details will be discussed in next week's episode of We Love Outdoors with Rich Davenport. Fur bearer seasons are opening up across the state as well, and regular big game season has opened in the Northern ZOne, with Southern Zone opening November 20. A meat and ammo raffle to raise money for the North Java Fire Hall happens on Oct 30. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and the doors open at 5:30PM, North Java Fire Hall, Route 98 in North Java. NYSCC is watching the progress of two bills very closely, and although nothing to worry about now, S.7456 is being watched closely, which is opposed by NYSCC. Finally, it seems more information is coming to light concerning the scam that is wind and solar. Across the Nation, information as to how bad these schemes will be for the grid and the people are now coming to light. Let's hope this continues, as the wind industry has had more than 20 years of unchallenged fairy tale telling, and countering the lies and falsehoods is hefty and takes time, and we don't have 20 years to full inform everyone... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/support

Private 4G or 5G? That is the question, it seems, for enterprises looking at private cellular as a springboard for digital transformation. But it is not a straight choice between them, actually: decade-old LTE technology has come a long way, and is advancing still; new 5G technology is just in its infancy, with a way to go yet; and migration between the two should be smooth. This episode in the Private Wireless Podcast series, brought to you with Nokia, traces the path of private cellular for mission-critical applications backwards to TETRA and GSM-R, through its present-day LTE-based incarnation (along with a pitstop to talk about Nokia’s own 4.9G classification), and forwards through the first 5G installations, just going live, and the promise of ultra-reliable low-latency 5G. But the key takeaway, in the end, is that private wireless is ready-to-go, and that LTE remains a hugely capable vehicle for Industry 4.0 while 5G builds a head of steam. Mathieu started out as a fighter pilot in the French Air Force. He started flying General Aviation airplanes and was accepted into the French Air Force at age 18. During his flight training, he was selected into the fighter pilot track. He trained in the Alpha Jet, and then was initially assigned to fly the Mirage 2000. He flew only air-to-air missions, flying between 12-24 flights per month. As an under-contract officer, Mathieu concentrated on flying, not having administrative duties. There was no expectation to serve in headquarters assignments. In his 14 years of active duty, Mathieu flew fighters for 8 years, spending most of his time as an Instructor Pilot (IP). While in the Air Force, he bought a powered ultralight aircraft, taking his first flight solo. After leaving the Air Force, Mathieu earned his civilian pilot ratings and pursued an airline career. He was hired by a major airline after a demanding interview and simulator check. He is based in Hong Kong, and now flies the Airbus A-330 in international service. Mathieu flies with pilots from a variety of countries and backgrounds, and all operations are conducted in Aviation English. He is currently at the bottom of his company’s seniority list, but he maintains a positive outlook about the airline career. He hosts the 9G podcast, and we hope all of the Ready For Takeoff Podcast listeners will tune in, especially this episode!

Causing ZFS corruption for fun, NetBSD Assembly Programming Tutorial, The IKEA Lack Rack for Servers, a new OmniOS Community Edition LTS has been published, List Block Devices on FreeBSD lsblk(8) Style, Project Trident 19.10 available, and more. Headlines Causing ZFS corruption for fun and profit (https://datto.engineering/post/causing-zfs-corruption) Datto backs up data, a lot of it. At the time of writing Datto has over 500 PB of data stored on ZFS. This count includes both backup appliances that are sent to customer sites, as well as cloud storage servers that are used for secondary and tertiary backup of those appliances. At this scale drive swaps are a daily occurrence, and data corruption is inevitable. How we handle this corruption when it happens determines whether we truly lose data, or successfully restore from secondary backup. In this post we'll be showing you how at Datto we intentionally cause corruption in our testing environments, to ensure we're building software that can properly handle these scenarios. Causing Corruption Since this is a mirror setup, a naive solution to cause corruption would be to randomly dd the same sectors of both /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc. This works, but is equally likely to just overwrite random unused space, or take down the zpool entirely. What we really want is to corrupt a specific snapshot, or even a specific file in that snapshot, to simulate a more realistic minor corruption event. Luckily we have a tool called zdb that lets us view some low level information about datasets. Conclusion At the 500 PB scale, it's not a matter of if data corruption will happen but when. Intentionally causing corruption is one of the strategies we use to ensure we're building software that can handle these rare (but inevitable) events. To others out there using ZFS: I'm curious to hear how you've solved this problem. We did quite a bit of experimentation with zinject before going with this more brute force method. So I'd be especially interested if you've had luck simply simulating corruption with zinject. NetBSD Assembly Programming Tutorial (https://polprog.net/blog/netbsdasmprog/) A sparc64 version is also being prepared and will be added when done This post describes how to write a simple hello world program in pure assembly on NetBSD/amd64. We will not use (nor link against) libc, nor use gcc to compile it. I will be using GNU as (gas), and therefore the AT&T syntax instead of Intel. Why assembly? Why not? Because it's fun to program in assembly directly. Contrary to a popular belief assembly programs aren't always faster than what optimizing compilers produce. Nevertheless it's good to be able to read assembly, especially when debugging C programs Due to the nature of the guide, visit the site for the complete breakdown News Roundup The IKEA Lack Rack for Servers (https://wiki.eth0.nl/index.php/LackRack) The LackRack First occurrence on eth0:2010 Winterlan, the LackRack is the ultimate, low-cost, high shininess solution for your modular datacenter-in-the-living-room. Featuring the LACK (side table) from Ikea, the LackRack is an easy-to-implement, exact-fit datacenter building block. It's a little known fact that we have seen Google engineers tinker with Lack tables since way back in 2009. The LackRack will certainly make its appearance again this summer at eth0:2010 Summer. Summary When temporarily not in use, multiple LackRacks can be stacked in a space-efficient way without disassembly, unlike competing 19" server racks. The LackRack was first seen on eth0:2010 Winterlan in the no-shoe Lounge area. Its low-cost and perfect fit are great for mounting up to 8 U of 19" hardware, such as switches (see below), or perhaps other 19" gear. It's very easy to assemble, and thanks to the design, they are stable enough to hold (for example) 19" switches and you can put your bottle of Club-Mate on top! Multi-shiny LackRack can also be painted to your specific preferences and the airflow is unprecedented! Howto You can find a howto on buying a LackRack on this page. This includes the proof that a 19" switch can indeed be placed in the LackRack in its natural habitat! OmniOS Community Edition r151030 LTS - Published at May 6, 2019 (https://omniosce.org/article/release-030) The OmniOS Community Edition Association is proud to announce the general availability of OmniOS - r151030. OmniOS is published according to a 6-month release cycle, r151030 LTS takes over from r151028, published in November 2018; and since it is a LTS release it also takes over from r151022. The r151030 LTS release will be supported for 3 Years. It is the first LTS release published by the OmniOS CE Association since taking over the reins from OmniTI in 2017. The next LTS release is scheduled for May 2021. The old stable r151026 release is now end-of-life. See the release schedule for further details. This is only a small selection of the new features, and bug fixes in the new release; review the release notes for full details. An example of such tool is lsblk(8) that does one thing and does it quite well – lists block devices and their contents. It has some problems like listing a disk that is entirely used under ZFS pool on which lsblk(8) displays two partitions instead of information about ZFS just being there – but we all know how much in some circles the CDDL licensed ZFS is unloved in that GPL world. Example lsblk(8) output from Linux system: $ lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom sda 8:0 0 931.5G 0 disk |-sda1 8:1 0 500M 0 part /boot `-sda2 8:2 0 931G 0 part |-vg_local-lv_root (dm-0) 253:0 0 50G 0 lvm / |-vg_local-lv_swap (dm-1) 253:1 0 17.7G 0 lvm [SWAP] `-vg_local-lv_home (dm-2) 253:2 0 1.8T 0 lvm /home sdc 8:32 0 232.9G 0 disk `-sdc1 8:33 0 232.9G 0 part `-md1 9:1 0 232.9G 0 raid10 /data sdd 8:48 0 232.9G 0 disk `-sdd1 8:49 0 232.9G 0 part `-md1 9:1 0 232.9G 0 raid10 /data What FreeBSD offers in this department? OpenBSD 6.3 and DragonflyBSD 5.2 are released, bug fix for disappearing files in OpenZFS on Linux (and only Linux), understanding the FreeBSD CPU scheduler, NetBSD on RPI3, thoughts on being a committer for 20 years, and 5 reasons to use FreeBSD in 2018. Headlines OpenBSD 6.3 released Punctual as ever, OpenBSD 6.3 has been releases with the following features/changes: Improved HW support, including: SMP support on OpenBSD/arm64 platforms vmm/vmd improvements: IEEE 802.11 wireless stack improvements Generic network stack improvements Installer improvements Routing daemons and other userland network improvements Security improvements dhclient(8) improvements Assorted improvements OpenSMTPD 6.0.4 OpenSSH 7.7 LibreSSL 2.7.2 DragonFlyBSD 5.2 released Big-ticket items Meltdown and Spectre mitigation support Meltdown isolation and spectre mitigation support added. Meltdown mitigation is automatically enabled for all Intel cpus. Spectre mitigation must be enabled manually via sysctl if desired, using sysctls machdep.spectremitigation and machdep.meltdownmitigation. HAMMER2 H2 has received a very large number of bug fixes and performance improvements. We can now recommend H2 as the default root filesystem in non-clustered mode. Clustered support is not yet available. ipfw Updates Implement state based "redirect", i.e. without using libalias. ipfw now supports all possible ICMP types. Fix ICMPMAXTYPE assumptions (now 40 as of this release). Improved graphics support The drm/i915 kernel driver has been updated to support Intel Coffeelake GPUs Add 24-bit pixel format support to the EFI frame buffer code. Significantly improve fbio support for the "scfb" XOrg driver. This allows EFI frame buffers to be used by X in situations where we do not otherwise support the GPU. Partly implement the FBIOBLANK ioctl for display powersaving. Syscons waits for drm modesetting at appropriate places, avoiding races. + For more details, check out the “All changes since DragonFly 5.0” section. ZFS on Linux bug causes files to disappear A bug in ZoL 0.7.7 caused 0.7.8 to be released just 3 days after the release The bug only impacts Linux, the change that caused the problem was not upstreamed yet, so does not impact ZFS on illumos, FreeBSD, OS X, or Windows The bug can cause files being copied into a directory to not be properly linked to the directory, so they will no longer be listed in the contents of the directory ZoL developers are working on a tool to allow you to recover the data, since no data was actually lost, the files were just not properly registered as part of the directory The bug was introduced in a commit made in February, that attempted to improve performance of datasets created with the case insensitivity option. In an effort to improve performance, they introduced a limit to cap to give up (return ENOSPC) if growing the directory ZAP failed twice. The ZAP is the key-value pair data structure that contains metadata for a directory, including a hash table of the files that are in a directory. When a directory has a large number of files, the ZAP is converted to a FatZAP, and additional space may need to be allocated as additional files are added. Commit cc63068 caused ENOSPC error when copy a large amount of files between two directories. The reason is that the patch limits zap leaf expansion to 2 retries, and return ENOSPC when failed. Finding the root cause of this issue was somewhat hampered by the fact that many people were not able to reproduce the issue. It turns out this was caused by an entirely unrelated change to GNU coreutils. On later versions of GNU Coreutils, the files were returned in a sorted order, resulting in them hitting different buckets in the hash table, and not tripping the retry limit Tools like rsync were unaffected, because they always sort the files before copying If you did not see any ENOSPC errors, you were likely not impacted The intent for limiting retries is to prevent pointlessly growing table to max size when adding a block full of entries with same name in different case in mixed mode. However, it turns out we cannot use any limit on the retry. When we copy files from one directory in readdir order, we are copying in hash order, one leaf block at a time. Which means that if the leaf block in source directory has expanded 6 times, and you copy those entries in that block, by the time you need to expand the leaf in destination directory, you need to expand it 6 times in one go. So any limit on the retry will result in error where it shouldn't. Recommendations for Users from Ryan Yao: The regression makes it so that creating a new file could fail with ENOSPC after which files created in that directory could become orphaned. Existing files seem okay, but I have yet to confirm that myself and I cannot speak for what others know. It is incredibly difficult to reproduce on systems running coreutils 8.23 or later. So far, reports have only come from people using coreutils 8.22 or older. The directory size actually gets incremented for each orphaned file, which makes it wrong after orphan files happen. We will likely have some way to recover the orphaned files (like ext4’s lost+found) and fix the directory sizes in the very near future. Snapshots of the damaged datasets are problematic though. Until we have a subcommand to fix it (not including the snapshots, which we would have to list), the damage can be removed from a system that has it either by rolling back to a snapshot before it happened or creating a new dataset with 0.7.6 (or another release other than 0.7.7), moving everything to the new dataset and destroying the old. That will restore things to pristine condition. It should also be possible to check for pools that are affected, but I have yet to finish my analysis to be certain that no false negatives occur when checking, so I will avoid saying how for now. Writes to existing files cannot trigger this bug, only adding new files to a directory in bulk News Roundup des@’s thoughts on being a FreeBSD committer for 20 years Yesterday was the twentieth anniversary of my FreeBSD commit bit, and tomorrow will be the twentieth anniversary of my first commit. I figured I’d split the difference and write a few words about it today. My level of engagement with the FreeBSD project has varied greatly over the twenty years I’ve been a committer. There have been times when I worked on it full-time, and times when I did not touch it for months. The last few years, health issues and life events have consumed my time and sapped my energy, and my contributions have come in bursts. Commit statistics do not tell the whole story, though: even when not working on FreeBSD directly, I have worked on side projects which, like OpenPAM, may one day find their way into FreeBSD. My contributions have not been limited to code. I was the project’s first Bugmeister; I’ve served on the Security Team for a long time, and have been both Security Officer and Deputy Security Officer; I managed the last four Core Team elections and am doing so again this year. In return, the project has taught me much about programming and software engineering. It taught me code hygiene and the importance of clarity over cleverness; it taught me the ins and outs of revision control; it taught me the importance of good documentation, and how to write it; and it taught me good release engineering practices. Last but not least, it has provided me with the opportunity to work with some of the best people in the field. I have the privilege today to count several of them among my friends. For better or worse, the FreeBSD project has shaped my career and my life. It set me on the path to information security in general and IAA in particular, and opened many a door for me. I would not be where I am now without it. I won’t pretend to be able to tell the future. I don’t know how long I will remain active in the FreeBSD project and community. It could be another twenty years; or it could be ten, or five, or less. All I know is that FreeBSD and I still have things to teach each other, and I don’t intend to call it quits any time soon. iXsystems unveils new TrueNAS M-Series Unified Storage Line San Jose, Calif., April 10, 2018 — iXsystems, the leader in Enterprise Open Source servers and software-defined storage, announced the TrueNAS M40 and M50 as the newest high-performance models in its hybrid, unified storage product line. I figured it must be related to the scheduler, and decided it hates me. A closer look shows the behaviour as follows (single CPU): Lets run an I/O-active task, e.g, postgres VACUUM that would continuously read from big files (while doing compute as well [1]): pool alloc free read write read write cache - - - - - - ada1s4 7.08G 10.9G 1.58K 0 12.9M 0 Now start an endless loop: while true; do :; done And the effect is: pool alloc free read write read write cache - - - - - - ada1s4 7.08G 10.9G 9 0 76.8K 0 The VACUUM gets almost stuck! This figures with WCPU in "top": PID USERNAME PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME WCPU COMMAND 85583 root 99 0 7044K 1944K RUN 1:06 92.21% bash 53005 pgsql 52 0 620M 91856K RUN 5:47 0.50% postgres Hacking on kern.sched.quantum makes it quite a bit better: sysctl kern.sched.quantum=1 kern.sched.quantum: 94488 -> 7874 pool alloc free read write read write cache - - - - - - ada1s4 7.08G 10.9G 395 0 3.12M 0 PID USERNAME PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME WCPU COMMAND 85583 root 94 0 7044K 1944K RUN 4:13 70.80% bash 53005 pgsql 52 0 276M 91856K RUN 5:52 11.83% postgres Now, as usual, the "root-cause" questions arise: What exactly does this "quantum"? Is this solution a workaround, i.e. actually something else is wrong, and has it tradeoff in other situations? Or otherwise, why is such a default value chosen, which appears to be ill-deceived? The docs for the quantum parameter are a bit unsatisfying - they say its the max num of ticks a process gets - and what happens when they're exhausted? If by default the endless loop is actually allowed to continue running for 94k ticks (or 94ms, more likely) uninterrupted, then that explains the perceived behaviour - buts thats certainly not what a scheduler should do when other procs are ready to run. 11.1-RELEASE-p7, kern.hz=200. Switching tickless mode on or off does not influence the matter. Starting the endless loop with "nice" does not influence the matter. [1] A pure-I/O job without compute load, like "dd", does not show this behaviour. Also, when other tasks are running, the unjust behaviour is not so stongly pronounced. ``` aarch64 support added I have committed about adding initial support for aarch64. booting log on RaspberryPI3: ``` boot NetBSD/evbarm (aarch64) Drop to EL1...OK Creating VA=PA tables Creating KSEG tables Creating KVA=PA tables Creating devmap tables MMU Enable...OK VSTART = ffffffc000001ff4 FDT devmap cpufunc bootstrap consinit ok uboot: args 0x3ab46000, 0, 0, 0 NetBSD/evbarm (fdt) booting ... VK0EK Expedition to Heard Island - 2016

Arliss Thompson, M.D, W7XU Arliss is a 63 year-old semi-retired emergency department physician living near Sioux Falls, SD Married to Holly, N0QJM, for 30 years. Two grown children: son Nolan (callsign N0LAN) and daughter Becky Education: BS Mathematics 1973, Oregon State University BS Wildlife Science 1980, Oregon State University MD 1988, Oregon Health Sciences University Early life: I grew up in western Oregon and was originally licensed as WN7JUH in 1968. I later upgraded to Advanced Class and then, in one long day at the FCC office in Portland, Oregon in the early 1970s, passed my Extra Class, Second Class Radiotelegraph and First Class Radiotelephone with Ship Radar Endorsement exams. I obtained my current call (W7XU) in the mid-70s. I was an alpine ski racer in college (early 1970s) and continued to race until retiring from that sport in 1978 as a Can-Am level skier. I supported myself by working various jobs in the summers, including 3 summers on survey crews and 1 summer as a sheepherder in the Gravelly Range in Montana. While pursuing a BS in Wildlife Science in the late 1970s, I did work-study with the OSU Dept. of Oceanography. That included some cruises of up to a week or so aboard the R/V Wecoma in the eastern Pacific, assisting with conductivity-temperature-density studies. Work in wildlife biology included 2 months aboard Japanese trawlers in the Bering Sea while serving as a foreign fishery observer for the National Marine Fisheries Service. My duties included sampling the catch for monitoring purposes, carrying out marine mammal watches and collecting specimens of fish that had not previously been documented in the Bering Sea (the latter being my favorite part of the job). I also worked for the US Forest Service doing stream surveys (which included camping out all summer) and stream studies for the EPA. In 1981-82 I was employed by ITT Antarctic Services as the communications coordinator (chief radio operator and repair technician) at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station (90 degrees south). I was a member of the winter over crew (on the ice 1 year). My duties involved long range communications with aircraft and handling day-to-day radioteletype and voice communications with other Antarctic bases. I was the chief operator of KC4AAA, also. Upon returning to the US, I entered medical school. I subsequently completed a residency in Internal Medicine, but was hired by an emergency medicine group and outside of residency I have only practiced emergency medicine. I have continued to maintain my board certification in Internal Medicine, but as of July of last year, I cut back to only practicing part time in local emergency departments, filling in as needed. Ham radio: I enjoy operating CW, SSB and RTTY. I have been on Dxpeditions to: FY, 8R, CE0Y, 9G, CY9, J3, VP2V, FJ, TZ, C5 and VP8 (Falklands). I am a member of the S. Georgia Dxpedition scheduled for January 2016. I've also operated from KC4, KL7, KH6, VY1 and a number of Canadian provinces. I enjoy contests and pile-ups, regardless of the mode. I think my best single op contest result was 3rd in the US, high power SSB, during the 10 m contest one year. I've participated in the W0SD multi-op ARRL RTTY Roundup effort, with a number of top 3 placings. I have held some meteor scatter distance records on 222 and 432 and have also worked all lower 48 states on 2m without EME. Ham references: I've been on several Dxpeditions with both of these operators: K5AND, Dick Hanson 512-940-9978 W0SD, Ed Gray 605-421-1918 Other activities: Bicycling: I bicycled from Oregon to Washington, DC, then up into Newfoundland and back to Vermont in 1980. I've also cycled in New Zealand, Australia and SE Asia enroute home following my year in Antarctica. My wife and I honeymooned on a tandem bike trip through England, Scotland and Wales. I continue to be an active cyclist. Hiking: I hiked about 350 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in May of this year. Commercial pilot...

(Quelle: blog.reddit – what’s new on reddit: The Alien Has Landed) Wer eher im deutschsprachigen Raum bleiben möchte und den eigenen Lokalpatriotismus vorantreiben möchte, dem sei noch Biscuit ans Herz gelegt. [Asthon] Converts NSAttributedStrings between AppKit, CoreText, UIKit and HTML. Sven fragt, was Patrick so Mind mappt’. …
