This week, the society doubles down on the animation, as they watch the 1963 Disney classic The Sword In the Stone, directed by Wolfgang Reitherman and starring Karl Swenson, Sebastian Cabot, and Rickie Sorensen. Long-time listeners to the podcast may be shocked to find the consensus that bubbles up during this episode - you never know what alliances may form around here! However, everyone can agree that tissues may be necessary for the squirrel scene, and that a witches' duel is good entertainment. “The Adventures of Father Brown” was broadcast on the Mutual Network during June and July of 1945, so only a few episodes were ever produced. It starred Karl Swenson as the titular priest and part-time detective. The show was based on the Father Brown mysteries, written by G.K. Chesterton starting in 1910 and continuing until 1936, some 50 short stories. Chesterton was a British, Catholic writer and part-time lay theologian. He loved mysteries, and he used his character of Father Brown to show that a man of faith could also be a man of logic. After matching wits with the good padre, put your feet up and laugh with Groucho on “You Bet Your Life.” Tonight, his guests include has a UPS delivery man and a former silent film actress, not to mention a neon sign manufacturer and an amateur handwriting analysist. Enjoy two free horror episodes of Murder At Midnight A) 6/7/46 Nightmare w/ Elspeth Eric B) 11/1/46 The Ape Song w/ Raymond Edward Johnson Produced in New York, “Murder At Midnight” came to ABC radio in September of 1946 and featured crime dramas and supernatural thrillers. Raymond Morgan, a former long-Island Minister, who had left the cloth For the excitement of radio, was the foreboding host who each week uttered the lines: "Midnight, the witching hour when the night is darkest, our fears the strongest, and our strength at its lowest ebb. Midnight, when the graves gape open and death strikes." Over its six-year run in syndication “Murder at Midnight” had a relatively high production budget (about $5,000 per show) which helped it pull respectable audience shares. The supporting players were New York's best, including: Lawson Zerbe, Karl Swenson, Berry Kroeger, Lon Clark, Elspeth Eric and Raymond Edward Johnson. Anton M. Leader directed the series and the scripts were by top writers, including Joe Ruscoll, Max Erlich and Robert Newman.
We kick off season 3 with a great episode, as Opie has a friend who seems too unreal to be true and Andy has a crisis in parenting.
Introductory Audio presents the background on the Cavalcade of America production... the 215th broadcast out of over 750 between 1935 and 1953 on CBS Radio. Karl Swenson stars as Edgar Allan Poe and Bill Johnstone stars as George Graham, a magazine publisher who hired Poe and made his magazine the most popular in the U.S.A. at the time. There was some dramatic license taken with this story that was written by Norman Rosten. For example, in the story Poe's young wife is called "Anna," but her real name was Virginia. The sponsor of the series was DuPont Chemical Company. This track will be in the "Drama/Adventure" Playlist on this Soundcloud.com podcast.

Inheritance was a joint production of the National Broadcasting Company and The American Legion and it's Auxliary. The timing of the production is significant. This was the height of the 'Red Scare' era, during which The American Legion of the era-- with the assistance of several powerful right wing Conservative senators and congressmen--orchestrated the notoriously infamous 'Red Channels' pamphlet which purported to 'out' alleged communist sympathizers in the name of 'national security.' The Red Channels pamphlets prompted the development of several informal--and entirely illegal--blacklists of the era, especially in the areas of union organizing efforts and The Arts. This was by no means a Government-sponsored or sanctioned activity. Rather it was a political and economic activity instigated by powerful Congressmen and Senators in the pockets of Anti-Union lobbyists and Defense Industrialists. That the Federal Government of the era was either too co-opted or too politically cowardly to discourage this practice remains a national disgrace. But the fact of the disgrace continues to color virtually every aspect of the history of the Performing Arts, Literary Arts and Fine Arts of the era. A cynic might characterize this series as a face-saving effort by the saner heads at The American Legion. Their connection to the infamous Red Channels pamplets had long been disclosed by the time the series aired. One might conjecture that both NBC and The Legion hoped to blunt the criticisms leveled at both organizations during this era. Given the almost non-existent promotion of the year long undertaking, the complete absence of detailed Radio listing information during its run, and the complete absence of any publicly announced connection between the broadcasts and their sponsors gives greater credence to this hypothesis. In fairness, these were also the waning years of Radio's influence; Television was--and would remain--the new novelty. Inheritance premieres over NBC Inheritance premiered on April 4th 1954. Airing for a total of fifty-seven installments, the production itself was extremely well-mounted--as might be expected of a year-long sustained network production. The huge, mostly West Coast casts comprised most of Radio's finest voice talent of the era. The music direction, while not particularly 'A'-List, was well-suited to the production. The productions were reasonably historically accurate--yet predictably jingoistic for the era. As with the Ladies Auxiliary to The Veterans of Foreign Wars-sponsored American Trail series of the previous year, functionaries of the respective supporting organizations would give a brief, topical message throughout the series. The opportunity to recite one's patriotic beliefs seems to have been a focal point of most of the 'post-script messages' of the series. As a 'message series' Inheritance may have slightly missed its mark--through no real fault of its own, but as a reasonably accurate anthology of patriotic historical vignettes the series holds up quite well. As one of the last 'vanity' productions of the era, the exceptional array of Golden Age Radio West Coast talent makes for a fascinating snapshot of the waning years of California's contribution to Radio's wealth of great actors. The writers that contributed to the series were also remarkable for their era. The writing staff included, among others, Ernest Kinoy, Karl Swenson, and George Lefferts. The appearance of two noteworthy science-fiction writers' contributions to an historical anthology series is interesting enough in itself, but the contribution of the 'Nancy Hanks' episode by Karl Swenson--as a writer--is just as interesting.

Lorenzo Jones was a successful departure for Frank and Anne Hummert—a comedy serial that enjoyed fine ratings from beginning to end with comparatively few touches of misery. It was aptly described by its opening signature: “We all know couples like lovable, impractical Lorenzo Jones and his devoted wife. Belle. Lorenzo’s inventions have made him a character to the town, but not to Belle, who loves him. Their struggle for security is anybody’s story, but somehow, with Lorenzo, it has mote smiles than tears.” For many years, the show opened with the cheery invitation, “And now let’s smile awhile with Lorenzo Jones and his wife, Belle.” In late 1948, the show was airing weekdays on NBC radio at 5:30PM Eastern Time. Karl Swenson starred as Lorenzo with Betty Garde and later Lucille Wall as Belle.
Pages from History... America's fascination for historic achievements, appreciation of the American heritage of freedom in enterprise - was served on radio from 1935 to 1953 and later on television from 1952-57 by an NBC program entitled "The Cavalcade of America." It was on Mondays at 8 p.m. EST. In this long and very popular series, the episodes were superbly written and expertly acted by famous stars of the time. Exciting drama ranged from tales of pioneer deeds to happenings that made the next day's headlines. This episode is about a man who many critics feel was America's greatest short-story writer, William Sydney Porter... better known as "O'Henry" ... stories known for their surprise endings... ala "The Gift of the Magi." This episode is about O'Henry's early days working for a newspaper. O'Henry is played by a then well known-actor Karl Swenson (1908-1978). Enjoy... this track can be found in my "Drama" playlist.

White novel The Sword in the StoneIt is about the search for a successor to the British throne after the death of King Uther Pendragon. A sword is found embedded in a stone and anvil with an inscription that proclaims that whoever can pull the sword is to be the rightful king. Many try, but no one is able to pull the sword, and with the passage of time, it is forgotten. In the meantime, the boy Arthur, called “Wart” meets the wizard Merlin and his companion, the highly educated owl Archimedes, and with their guidance, learns the importance of education as well as valuable life lessons about justice through the use of Merlin’s magical shapeshifting powers. Acting as a squire, Wart finds the sword in the stone while looking for a sword for his brother Kay to use in a tournament, and, without knowing what it is, pulls the sword from the stone. When the identity of the sword is realized and it is discovered that Wart was the one who pulled it, he is made King - wiser and better equipped to rule using the lessons he learned from MerlinGeneral opinions on the movie Fun Facts: This film has been very confusing for many because it is based on the original 1938 novel The Sword in the Stone. 1958 rerelease as part of compilation. Indeed, such was the premise behind the CBS series, You Are There. Audiences witnessed history through the present-tense accounts of newsmen allegedly witnessing historical events transpiring before their eyes. Don Hollenbeck and John Daley (known for his TV game show panelist appearances) played the lead anchors, while real-life newsman provided the remote commentaries as the dramas unfolded. As show opened, an anchor would describe the present situation with "As it stands now…" and segue into commentaries, live remote feeds or analysis as the story unfurled. The show was well received, but perhaps was doomed to eventual failure in part due John Daly's emoting. Bernard DeVoto in Harper Magazine lamented: "We have heard his (Daly) voice vibrate with the real emotion, and our memory of the real simply turns the imagined to ham."THIS EPISODE:January 2, 1949. Affordable Web Hosting $5.99 A month This Is Your FBI was a radio crime drama which aired in the United States on ABC from April 6, 1945 to January 30, 1953. FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover gave it his endorsement, calling it "the finest dramatic program on the air." Producer-director Jerry Devine was given access to FBI files by Hoover, and the resulting dramatizations of FBI cases were narrated by Frank Lovejoy (1945), Dean Carleton (1946-47) and William Woodson (1948-53). Stacy Harris had the lead role of Special Agent Jim Taylor. Others in the cast were William Conrad, Bea Benaderet and Jay C. Flippen. The show was created by producer-director Jerry Devine, a former comedy writer for Kate Smith and Tommy Riggs, who had turned his scripting talents to radio thrillers like Mr. District Attorney. This is Your FBI received the full cooperation of J. Edgar; Hoover gave Devine carte blanche to closed cases in the Bureau’s files for inspiration in writing the show’s weekly dramatizations. They were prefaced, of course, with the Dragnet-like disclaimer “All names used are fictitious and any similarity thereof to the names of persons or places, living or dead, is accidental.” (This led Jim Cox, author of Radio Crime Fighters, to observe: “Some listeners must have pondered that for a while—‘So did these events happen or not?’”) Debuting over ABC Radio on April 6, 1945, This is Your FBI broadcast from New York in its early run (1945-47), showcasing the talents of New York radio veterans like Mandel Kramer, Karl Swenson, Santos Ortega, Elspeth Eric, Joan Banks, and Frank Lovejoy (who narrated many of the shows). In 1948, though, the program relocated to Hollywood, and with the move established a regular weekly character in Special Agent Jim Taylor, a representative of all of the Bureau’s special agents, played by actor Stacy Harris.
