This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week on the Superlative Podcast, host and aBlogtoWatch Founder Ariel Adams is joined by Jason Heaton, an author, podcaster, and timepiece enthusiast who reviews dive watches and much more. To start the show Ariel and Jason talk about how the culture of watchmaking is just as much of an interest to them as the products themselves, and how Jason was able to turn his hobbies into the career he has now. He talks about how his interest in diving was born from owning an Omega Planet Ocean, and how that led to his focus on writing and reviewing dive watches specifically. They also touch on their career trajectories and the challenges of being content producers in the digital age. The two touch on how brands interact with the people making watch content today, and the role of content creators in enhancing a brand's universe and the need for consistency while finding one's unique contribution. The discussion slightly shifts to the process of writing novels, as Jason has authored two novels, and the importance of breaking down the work into manageable chunks. The idea of adding watches in novels as set dressing is discussed, as well as the missed opportunity in the watch industry to tell more stories. As the conversation starts to come to an end, Jason and Ariel discuss the reluctance of watch brands to share negative or failed aspects of their history, they offer advice on choosing the right watch, and the role of watch enthusiasts in helping others make informed decisions. To stay connected with Jason:- Website - https://jasonheatonauthor.com/ - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jasonheaton - Podcast - https://thegreynato.com/ Check out this week's sponsors:Marathon: https://www.marathonwatch.com/ Zodiac: https://www.zodiacwatches.com/ SUPERLATIVE IS NOW ON YOUTUBE! This week on the podcast, we continue a Windup Watch Fair tradition. For the third year in a row, we're teaming with our friends Jason Heaton and James Stacey of The Grey NATO for a collaborative podcast. We recorded in front of a (packed) live audience on the final day of Windup, and covered a lot of ground. Once again, we're splitting it up so you'll hear the first half on our feed today, and the second half on TGN tomorrow. In this half of the conversation, Zach Kazan, Zach Weiss, and the TGN guys talk about their favorite watches at the fair. There were a lot of great watches on display at the show, and we really only scratched the surface. We also get all the details on the third iteration of “Windup in a Lake,” our annual dive trip on Lake Michigan, which this year was sponsored by Citizen. Be sure to check out TGN tomorrow to hear all about the TGN get-together that took place shortly before our podcast recording, as well as a lengthy Q&A session from our live audience. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. What makes a great dive watch? How much water resistance do you really need? How exactly does a helium release valve work and do I really need one? We all love dive watches, but these are the questions that we hear regularly, and who better to answer them than *actual* friend of the pod, none other than author, adventurer, and diver Jason Heaton? Indeed – grab your mask and fins, and settle in, this was a delightful interview with one of the nicest guys in the industry, and it leaves no stone unturned on just what makes dive watches — and the sport of scuba diving, so cool. Jason Heaton, everyone's favourite diving watch guy, is back! Last time we had the pleasure of Heaton's dulcet tones in our ears, he was talking about his debut novel Depth Charge. Now he's back with a brand new novel: Sweetwater. Sweetwater sees the return of Tusker, the marine archaeologist, but now the action is a bit closer to home: the icy waters of Lake Superior. What hasn't changed, though, is Heaton's brisk adventure thriller tone, which sees the action coming on thick and fast, with the political intrigue as murky as the depths. We don't dive into too many spoilers with Jason, but we do find out how this novel is different to his first, just how much of Tusker is recognisably Jason, and more. Of course, we also chat about the rest of Jason's life, from dipping his toes back into watches and how the impossibly cool podcast, The Grey NATO, is going from strength to strength. And before all that, we chat about why Zodiac nails the creative use of colour. This episode is sponsored by Zodiac. He and his wife, Gishani, are an adventuresome traveling duo. Diving around the world to photograph and write about some of the most horologically heavy-hitting dive watches that the world, and the deep, have ever seen. Jason's writing has been featured in print and online in Outside magazine, Gear Patrol, Men's Journal, and Hodinkee just to name a few. His passion for diving and dive watches was recognized by the New York Times in 2017, bestowing upon him the title as the world's "test pilot for undersea timepieces." In his writing, Jason's experience comes through as an avid outdoor enthusiast. His newsletter on Substack, Swimpruf, is an ongoing ‘dispatch' of his adventures, his Land Rover, and stories around his watches. He also co-hosts the popular podcast, The Grey NATO, with James Stacey, where they share about “adventure, diving, driving, gear…and most certainly, watches.“ On the Analog Explorer, we dive into (pun very much intended) watches, diving, and how adventure found Jason and formed his writing career. As a world traveler who has taken over 200 timepieces down with him on over 500 dives, we touch on diving trends and where gear might go in the future. Since the pandemic, Jason has expanded his writing into fiction. First, with his novel "Depth Charge" (2021), and now his new novel, "Sweetwater" (2023). As a fan of his two novels, our chat turned to the watches that showed up in the adventure series and why he paired them to their characters. We also explore what some of the real life inspirations were for his characters and locations. Today's episode is action-packed in more ways than one. Of course, the top billing goes to Jason Heaton, a product journalist who's penned his first novel, But before that, we have some action of a different kind, with Andy chatting to Mike Manjos from WatchBox, about the winners from Watches & Wonders. Then it's straight into the thriller that is Depth Charge. Heaton bills it as a classic paperback page-turner in the vein of Cussler or Fleming, with a healthy dose of diving, and of course, dive watches. And while Heaton doesn't reveal the watch his hero ended up wearing in the book, we do talk about the challenges of writing (and researching) a novel during a pandemic, updating thriller tropes while making them relevant for a modern audience. Of course, we also chat about the in-depth character development of a pivotal character and probably great guy, the henchman known as 'Scholz'. Back when Jason Heaton was first on the podcast, Felix petitioned strongly to be included as an evil henchman in the novel. CONIFA, the Confederation of Independent Football Associations, is the football federation for all associations outside FIFA. It's a global acting non-profit organization that supports representatives of international football teams from nations, de-facto nations, regions, minority peoples and sports isolated territories. CONIFA was founded on the 7th of June 2013, and organized his first World Football Cup in June 2014 in Ostersund, Sweden. Recently I had the pleasure to sit down with Jason Heaton, global ambassador of the organization to discuss all things CONIFA and his passion for football. In a wide ranging discussion we remarked upon the following; - Finding your purpose through football- Why the strength of an organization is it's people?- What does a Kernow FA board meeting look like?- Sticking to your principles amid geopolitical pressure- The workload of representing a population base of 675 millionCONIFA Website; http://www.conifa.org/en/CONIFA Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/conifaofficial/Jason's LinkedIn; https://www.linkedin.com/in/jason-heaton-6a9083106/Timestamps;00:00 - 04:36 - What is CONIFA?04:37 - 14:00 - Passion for football14:01 - 18:04 - Common purpose18:05 - 23:16 - Kernow FA23:17 - 30:31 - Heart warming stories30:32 - 33:45 - Upcoming tournaments33:46 - 40:16 - CONIFA future40:17 - 44:31 - Closing thoughts

In this episode Spence and Buzz sit down with a friend from our Cincy Redbar group @Sohl to discuss the intersection of his two hobbies, Diving and Watches. Sohl is the first (that we know of) registered diver to come on the podcast, and his journey into watches and diving happened concurrently, but not in the way you might think.  We discuss what came first, the diving or the watches, some of the pieces in his collection, his interaction with the Bund King himself, Jason Heaton, and a few other pertinent topics. We end the episode discussing the recent Doxa Dust-Up and get Sohl's take on the Synchron Military (he owns one), Doxa's reaction, and what we might expect from both of these brands in the near future. It was a pleasure having our friend on the show, and I am sure, once Doxa releases a response, he will be glad to share his opinion with us on air again!Oh, and here is a link to the Hodinkee article we talk about!

Jason Heaton has a passion for smoking things. His restaurant in the south end of Sudbury has ribs, sausages, chicken skewers, wings and more. I picked up a meat tray and was blown away by the brisket. House-made beans, a special sauce coleslaw, a salad... and you have a meal for many. His menu of course has many other options from poutine to pulled pork sandwiches. Eating in house there are 8 taps, and a broad selection of bourbon. You just have to have a Jones Soda to go with the feast!
