POPULARITY
In the eyes of the architecture critic Paul Goldberger, a building is a living, breathing thing, a structure that can have a spirit and even, at its best, a soul. It's this optimistic perspective that has given Goldberger's writing a certain ineffable, captivating quality across his prolific career—first at The New York Times, where he served as the paper's longtime architecture critic, winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1984; then as the architecture critic at The New Yorker from 1997 to 2011; and now, as a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. Goldberger is the author of several books, including Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry (2015), Why Architecture Matters (2009), and Building Up and Tearing Down: Reflections on the Age of Architecture (2009). He is also the chair of the advisory board of the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, where we recorded this episode, our third “site-specific” interview on Time Sensitive. On the episode, Goldberger discusses the Glass House's staying power as it turns 75, the evolution of architecture over the past century, what he's learned from writing architects' obituaries, and the Oreo cookie from a design perspective.Special thanks to our Season 10 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Paul Goldberger[05:17] Glass House[05:17] Philip Johnson[07:06] Ludwig Mies van der Rohe[07:06] Farnsworth House[08:42] Brick House[12:37] Gordon Bunshaft[12:37] Lever House[12:37] Frank Lloyd Wright[12:37] Guggenheim Museum[13:18] TWA Flight Center[13:18] Kevin Roche[13:18] Ford Foundation building[13:18] CBS Building[15:17] Noyes House[16:17] U.N. This week on Down the Garden Path, Joanne Shaw speaks with Wildflower Farm's Miriam Goldberger about Eco-Lawn, the answer to a truly low-maintenance lawn, as well as some of her favourite native plants you can include in your garden. About Miriam Goldberger Miriam Goldberger is the founder and co-owner of Wildflower Farm, a wildflower seed production company in Ontario — a magical 100 acres where the flower gardens and meadows thrive without pesticides and are a pollinators' paradise. To learn more about Miriam's journey, visit the Wildflower Farm website. Here are some of the topics covered in this episode: Miriam's book, Taming Wildflowers, was published over 10 years ago. Joanne noted how Miriam has become a pioneer in the industry of native plants and wildflowers. The book contains helpful information about how to grow native plants in specific locations and is available on the Wildflower Farm website. Miriam recommends three of her favourite “polite” wildflowers: Black-eyed Susan, a stable perennial for late-summer/early-fall Gaillardia or blanket flower, a vivid and bright yellow/orange/red colour that will stay in bloom Prairie drop seed, a clump-forming, non-aggressive grass that looks beautiful from late spring right through into the fall. Miriam also discussed Eco-Lawn: Our customers had urged us to develop a lawn that was just as sustainable, drought tolerant and low maintenance as our wildflower gardens and meadows. While walking in the forests of Ontario, we spotted clumps of rich green grass growing in the deep shade of the northern woods. Could these emerald patches be used as natural grass pathways around and through our wildflower meadows? After three years of research and trials later, Eco-Lawn was born. Since its introduction in 1998, it has changed the face of lawnscaping across North America for homeowners, businesses and municipalities. Eco-Lawn combines several native fescues that grow together to create a matte or lawn. The roots are deeper than our Kentucky Bluegrass which makes it much more drought tolerant and can grow under a variety of light conditions. You can start a new lawn with the seed or slowly convert an existing lawn into a low maintenance Eco- lawn. The fall is the best time to start Eco-lawn! Full instructions on how to prepare for applying Eco-lawn are available on their website. You can find Wildflower Farm at www.wildflowerfarm.com. In this episode, Mor shares her journey from being a traditional therapist to becoming a traveling therapist, combining her passion for travel and her love for therapy. Mor started traveling internationally alone at a young age and developed a strong desire to see different countries. Originally, her background was in tech, which made it challenging to transition to therapy. Eventually, she pursued her passion and became a therapist, specializing in couples work and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Mor discusses how she incorporated her tech background into her therapy career. She currently work for a tech company called Mentaya, where she serves as the head of provider experience and growth. The company offers solutions for therapists who prefer not to handle insurance directly. Therapists can refer their clients to Mentaya, which handles insurance claims, eligibility checks, and streamlines the process for therapists, allowing them to focus on therapy while ensuring accessibility for clients. The episode highlights the importance of following one's passion and finding creative ways to incorporate therapy into different income streams. It also emphasizes the significance of understanding out-of-network benefits and considering alternative options for reimbursement, especially when working with insurance companies that may not be ideal. Keypoints: Pursue your passions: Follow your interests and find ways to incorporate them into your career, even if it requires a shift in direction. Explore alternative income streams: Look for creative ways to generate income as a therapist, such as leveraging technology or offering additional services beyond one-on-one client sessions. Understand insurance options: Gain a working understanding of out-of-network benefits and consider utilizing platforms to help streamline insurance processes, reduce logistical strain, and maintain financial sustainability. About Mor Goldberger: Mor Goldberger has an MFT from the Wright Institute and an MBA from Berkeley Haas. B., Staffaroni, A., Maillard, P., Miller, B. L., Hinman, J. D., DeCarli, C., Ferguson, A. R., Kramer, J., Elahi, F. M. Abstract: Aberrant angiogenesis could contribute to cognitive impairment, representing a therapeutic target for preventing dementia. However, most angiogenesis studies focus on model organisms. To test the relevance of angiogenesis to human cognitive aging, we evaluated associations of circulating blood markers of angiogenesis with brain aging trajectories in two deeply phenotyped human cohorts (n=435, age 74+9) with longitudinal cognitive assessments, biospecimens, structural brain imaging, and clinical data. Machine learning and traditional statistics revealed sex dimorphic associations of plasma angiogenic growth factors with brain aging outcomes. Specifically, angiogenesis is associated with higher executive function and less brain atrophy in younger women (not men), a directionality of association that reverses around age 75. Higher levels of basic fibroblast growth factor, known for pleiotropic effects on multiple cell types, predicted favorable cognitive trajectories. This work demonstrates the relevance of angiogenesis to brain aging with important therapeutic implications for vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. Copy rights belong to original authors. The Sales Playbook and Why You Should Never Hire a Sales VP First: Why does Mark believe that you should never hire a Sales VP as the first sales hire? What does Mark mean when he says product-customer-fit is more important than product-market-fit? Why does Mark believe that revenue does not matter with your first customers? If revenue does not matter, what should you be trying to get out of them? When should the founder handover sales to either a junior or more senior hire? 3. How to Hire 10x Sales Teams: The Process: How does Mark structure the process for hiring 10x sales reps? What questions are most revealing in identifying a 10x sales rep? How do they respond? How does Mark like to create urgency in a sales process? What works? What does not? How can sales reps know whether they truly have a deal champion within a buyer? What is the right way for sales reps to ask to meet the exec buyer? When is the right time to ask to meet the exec buyer? What are some clear signs that you are not speaking to a decision-maker? 5. Building a High-Functioning Sales Org: What is the right way to do deal reviews? How often? Who should be invited? What is the right way to do sales onboarding for all new reps? Why is traditional outbound still the most important thing in a sales process? Why do so many people get pipeline qualification so wrong?

Neuroscientists at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City have used music from the Healing Beyond Medicine Music series created by Dr. Joseph Michael Levry to reduce pain in children being treated for a rare form of cancer, subsequently reducing the need for larger doses of medication during treatment. These pilot findings were so substantial that the study was recently published in the Journal of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology and an additional grant was issued for continued study. The results of this extraordinary research were presented at a 2018 East Hampton event hosted by actress and supermodel Carolyn Murphy, the founder of Equinox Fitness Clubs Lavinia Errico, and celebrity hair colorist Michael Canalé. The event was also attended by actor and environmentalist, Adrian Grenier. Mahuiddin Ahmed PhD, shared the results of this research on the power of sound meditation: “In a small pilot study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, my colleague Dr. Sonia Sequeira and I have shown that the sound meditation found in Naam can be used to provide acute pain relief in children undergoing experimental cancer treatments and to significantly reduce the need for pain medication. With these encouraging results, we now have a grant from the hospital to conduct a first of its kind randomized controlled trial to see how these same techniques can affect pain, anxiety and outcome for pediatric patients undergoing major surgeries as part of their cancer care.” One of the tracks used in the study contains an ancient combination of healing sounds precisely arranged with the therapeutic melody of Pachelbel's Canon. The classical Canon was discovered to have a perfectly symmetrical geometric pattern by Alissa Crans, associate professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University, for which she won the National Merten M. Hasse Prize1. Fascinatingly, this type of symmetry can be found in nature, from the shape of a snowflake, to the body of a starfish and even in the conformation of DNA molecules during protein synthesis. Furthermore, according to a study conducted at the Monash University in Australia, the simple act of listening to Pachelbel's Canon completely prevented increases in anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate in the midst of being exposed to cognitive stressors2. Preliminary findings based on the work of Dr. Goldberger of Harvard Medical School also suggest that patients' heart rhythms became more organized and improved after listening to this healing melody3. What is unique is that Dr. Levry's unique musical formula magnifies the healing benefits of Pachelbel's Canon using sacred words and melodic elements, that contain mathematically defined tones and meter, thereby creating a totally new musical combination that directly supports the healing process in a very powerful way. https://rootlight.com

“It began as a mistake." This is the quote on Andrew Goldberger's iPhone background screen taken from the opening line of a Bukowski novel. In this episode, Lanese and Andrew talk about his journey into the car wash industry where he reveals that, like many entrepreneurs, what started as a well-laid business plan on paper turned out to be incongruent in practice. And, how that's okay. Recognizing the need to adjust the original plan, pivoting, staying humble, and developing key relationships can turn an endeavor that began with a rocky start into a success story. The episode also highlights the continued opportunities for car wash owners contemplating selling or scaling their business in today's market. And how for Andrew, partnering with a private equity group made sense for him to transition his business into the next chapter. Only a select few truly understand this: Riches are in the Niches! It's one of the most prevalent cliches in the franchising industry, and yet the vast majority of entrepreneurs can't grasp that this concept isn't about one business providing 100 different services. The mistake often occurs when one tries to provide different service[S] to cater to “everyone”.What Leo Goldberger wants to share with us is that this concept is about: focusing on and providing [A] Service that EVERYONE needs. It's about providing that $90 patch job that people truly need instead of the $900 overkill “All-In” package that every other business is offering.Leo has decades of experience in franchising, and is well known for starting Inspection Boys and The Patch Boys prior to starting Home Based Franchise Group. He has helped hundreds of franchise owners prosper and grow entry-level businesses into successful enterprises.Leo believes it's far easier to master a simple business, and the consumer has far more trust in a business that specializes in one thing.“With Home Based Franchise Group, these are businesses that don't cost very much to get started, and it doesn't cost much to continue to operate and grow. There's very little overhead, which is the most common reason why people go out of business. With our franchises, you can own a simple business and scale it up to be incredibly successful”, says Leo.Dryer vents are the leading cause of home fires. Keeping dryer vents clean is critically important! Understanding this, Leo mobilized the Dryer Vent Squad.Counting the windows in every building you see (and don't see) is like counting revenue when you have a business like Frost Shades providing specialty window tinting.Renovating a room is overkill when cleaning up the closet will do. Leo saw an opportunity in creating custom closets that don't break banks unlike full-on renovations. Not everyone with love for grass has the time to maintain them. Setting up The Turf Boys to provide artificial turf for these homeowners is one of Leo's greatest ideas.Have a better grasp of the concept now? It's in mastering the simple things (that everyone needs) that you can start to grow successful and potentially timeless businesses.Tune in to our Podcast to learn more about everything you WANT and NEED on franchising, investment, financing processes and options. This is Eye On Franchising, where we share our vision for your franchise future. https://www.facebook.com/lance.graulichhttps://ionfranchising.com/

Dr. Joseph Goldberger and the Fight Against PellagraGuest: Alan M. Kraut, Professor of History at American University, and author of “Goldberger's War, the Life and Work of a Public Health Crusader” Contrary to the popular medical opinion of the time, Dr. Joseph Goldberger discovered that pellagra, a rampant epidemic in the South, was not infectious but diet-related. But the truth was hard to bear for the Southern establishment, and Dr. Goldberger had to resort to throwing "filth parties" where he and his colleagues ingested the disease to make their point. Find out how his discoveries still affect the food you eat today. How a Hungarian Physician Saved Women from Childbed Fever and Became the ‘Savior of Mothers'Guest: Anthony Valerio, editor, teacher, and author of “Semmelweis”Washing your hands isn't just the best way to prevent COVID-19 in 2020—it was also the rallying cry of Ignaz Semmelweis, a young Hungarian doctor trying to end the scourge of childbed fever and lower maternal mortality rates in the 1840s, well before germ theory entered scientific thought.
