Send us a textThis week, the show welcomes automotive media veteran Eddie Alterman to chat about cars, the automotive industry, and watches. Eddie served as the Editor in Chief of Car & Driver for 10 years, and now finds himself leading automotive editorial for Hearst, overseeing properties like Car & Driver, Road & Track, Motortrend, Hot Rod, Autoweek, and a personal favorite, Bring A Trailer. There is a surprising amount of overlap between how we think about cars and watches of a certain era, which has defined our enthusiasm for both, and we get into just why that is in this episode. Send us a textThis week I'm thrilled to welcome James Stacey back to the podcast. James and I have just returned from a trip to Paris with Richard Mille and Ferrari to get a first hand look at the new 43-01 Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph. In this episode, we react to the watch, and chat about some of the other highlights of the trip, including time in a racing simulator set up (and how we might go about replicating such a set up in our own homes). Additionally, we look ahead to Watches & Wonders and ponder what's in store for us, including which Rolex watch would make the most sense in RLX titanium. For this special episode, we're joined by Drew Peterson. Drew is a dedicated collector of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1, so he brought a portion of his collection to the Hodinkee office to chat with James Stacey. He takes us through the history and the evolution of the Chronograph 1, introduced in 1972. From Valjoux and Lemania calibers to the many military connections and everything in between, Drew is an absolute wealth of knowledge about the Chronograph 1 and Porsche Design. He also talks about the future of collecting the Chronograph 1 and a few of the mysteries that are still out there for collectors to solve. Finally, James and Drew finish by taking a look at the modern reissue of the Chronograph 1 and what the future holds for Porsche Design. Thanks to Porsche Design for its support of Hodinkee Radio.Show NotesRelated coverage of Porsche Design:In-Depth: A Detailed Look At The Incredible 40 Years Of Porsche DesignWatching Movies: Why Tom Cruise's Porsche Design, And A Vintage Rolex, Make 'Top Gun: Maverick' The Best Watch Movie Of The YearTalking Watches With Ferdi PorscheHands-On: Take To The Ice With The New Porsche Design Chronograph 1 GP 2023 EditionThe Porsche Design Chronograph 1 for Hodinkee
Our guest today is James Lamdin, co-founder of Analog Shift. After careers in outdoor equipment and cars, James started vintage dealer Analog Shift in 2012. A long-time watch collector, James turned his passion for vintage watches into a new resource for collectors and enthusiasts. You might know Analog Shift for its detailed watch descriptions, often with a bit of character, and perhaps you've even been lucky enough to visit its New York City showroom, a standby for local vintage watch lovers. In addition to Analog Shift, James is also the co-founder of the RedBar community. In 2020, Analog Shift was acquired by the retailer Watches of Switzerland. But Analog Shift has kept its character since then. Today, James is VP of vintage and pre-owned with Watches of Switzerland. When he's not talking vintage watches, he's drinking whisky, driving his vintage Porsche, and generally cosplaying as Magnum PI.James Stacey joins Mr. Lamdin and me to talk Doxa (of course), how the watch industry has evolved since Lamdin founded Analog Shift, neo-vintage watches, and his company's acquisition by Watches of Switzerland. Today, we're chatting watches with our guest, watch journalist Blake Buettner. Blake's a veteran of watch media, having first contributed to Hodinkee in 2010. After that, he went on to work with StockX before becoming the Managing Editor of Worn & Wound. Nowawadays, you can find his writing in places like the Robb Report as well as his own project, The Deeptrack. We talk a bit about Blake's background, the early days of Hodinkee, and how he got into watches. But since he's old hat at this, James, Blake, and I mostly just kick back and talk watches – the new Seiko Speedtimer, exciting microbrands, all followed by a listener Q&A. A note that Hodinkee Radio will be adopting a summer schedule through the month of August. We're taking next week off, but we'll be back in your feed again before long. Until then, enjoy my discussion with Blake and James. This week on the podcast, we continue a Windup Watch Fair tradition. For the third year in a row, we're teaming with our friends Jason Heaton and James Stacey of The Grey NATO for a collaborative podcast. We recorded in front of a (packed) live audience on the final day of Windup, and covered a lot of ground. Once again, we're splitting it up so you'll hear the first half on our feed today, and the second half on TGN tomorrow. In this half of the conversation, Zach Kazan, Zach Weiss, and the TGN guys talk about their favorite watches at the fair. There were a lot of great watches on display at the show, and we really only scratched the surface. We also get all the details on the third iteration of “Windup in a Lake,” our annual dive trip on Lake Michigan, which this year was sponsored by Citizen. Be sure to check out TGN tomorrow to hear all about the TGN get-together that took place shortly before our podcast recording, as well as a lengthy Q&A session from our live audience. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. You can also find our RSS feed here. And if you like what you hear, then don't forget to leave us a review on iTunes. If there's a question you want us to answer you can hit us up at info@wornandwound.com, and we'll put your question in the queue.Show NotesKat's wrist check: Tudor SubmarinerZach's wrist check: Bell & Ross BR 03 MultimeterThe Worn & Wound Podcast Ep 305: Live from Windup Watch Fair, Jason Heaton and James Stacey of The Grey NATOThe Worn & Wound Podcast Ep. 253: Live from Windup Watch Fair, A Conversation with Jason Heaton and James Stacey of the Grey NATOThe Grey NATOMonta Adds a GMT Complication to the Noble Collection with the New Noble VoyagerOris Introduces the Great Barrier Reef Limited Edition IV, Made in Partnership with the Reef Restoration Foundation

He and his wife, Gishani, are an adventuresome traveling duo. Diving around the world to photograph and write about some of the most horologically heavy-hitting dive watches that the world, and the deep, have ever seen. Jason's writing has been featured in print and online in Outside magazine, Gear Patrol, Men's Journal, and Hodinkee just to name a few. His passion for diving and dive watches was recognized by the New York Times in 2017, bestowing upon him the title as the world's "test pilot for undersea timepieces." In his writing, Jason's experience comes through as an avid outdoor enthusiast. His newsletter on Substack, Swimpruf, is an ongoing ‘dispatch' of his adventures, his Land Rover, and stories around his watches. He also co-hosts the popular podcast, The Grey NATO, with James Stacey, where they share about “adventure, diving, driving, gear…and most certainly, watches.“ On the Analog Explorer, we dive into (pun very much intended) watches, diving, and how adventure found Jason and formed his writing career. As a world traveler who has taken over 200 timepieces down with him on over 500 dives, we touch on diving trends and where gear might go in the future. Since the pandemic, Jason has expanded his writing into fiction. First, with his novel "Depth Charge" (2021), and now his new novel, "Sweetwater" (2023). As a fan of his two novels, our chat turned to the watches that showed up in the adventure series and why he paired them to their characters. We also explore what some of the real life inspirations were for his characters and locations. This week on the podcast, we're coming to you live from the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago, and we're thrilled to be joined for the second year in a row by James Stacey and Jason Heaton, who you almost certainly know as the co-hosts of The Grey NATO podcast. Blake Buettner and Kat Shoulders joined the TGN guys on stage in front of a live audience on Sunday afternoon of Windup weekend, for a wide ranging discussion that featured a recap of a Lake Michigan dive trip with Benrus the day before, insight into what goes into the decision to actually buy a watch, candid thoughts on some big new releases, and a proper evaluation of how to pronounce “Pelagos.” Just like last year, this is a two part episode, so be sure to look out for the rest of the conversation on TGN's feed tomorrow, which includes a great Q&A with Windup attendees. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. The Moonshine MoonSwatch is mentioned, as is a new book on industrial espionage in the early days of American watchmaking. We had a few technology gremlins to deal with, but it all come good in the end. Thanks for listening!
Wow!! Okay, let's start by saying that we were stoked to be joined by Spence from the "Whiskey and Watches Podcast" AND Hodinkee heavyweight and watch pod pioneer, James Stacey. This episode is nominally a Formula One season preview, but we ended up covering WAAAYYYY more ground than that. The episode is front-loaded with watch chat, including a bit on all of our thoughts on the new Sinn T50, among other things. This one goes long, so pour a good beer- or maybe mix a cocktail- sit back, and enjoy.

This week on the Worn & Wound podcast we're bringing you a special episode, recorded in front of a live audience at last weekend's Windup Watch Fair in Chicago. Chances are, if you've read about watches, watch collecting, or watch collectors in the New York Times, you've read an article written by our guest this week. Spence had the privilege of meeting Alexandra on his trip to Vail with Oris. Working as a travel/culture/luxury writer, Alexandra is easily our most well traveled guest, and she was happy to share some of her stories from writing about this space with us. Alexandra calls California home, and is a former professional surfer, but her job has taken her to more countries than I can remember as I am writing these show notes, driving faster cars than many of us have had the opportunity to (one of which had her driving one James Stacey around Germany). She will be attending her first Watches&Wonders event later this month, an experience I am looking forward to reading about upon her return!
I first learned about Brew Watches through HODINKEE as many of you may have. Former podcast guest James Stacey always seems to know how to get my attention through his words and photos and his features of Jonathan Ferrer's espresso machine-inspired chronograph was no exception. A chronograph that times an espresso shot, now that's something you don't see every day. And same goes for the TV set shape of the Brew Metric's case. Definitely drawing from the 60's & 70's this $395 chronograph and it's vintage radio-inspired color palette is also nothing if not attention-grabbing. And all of this coming the gentleman I'm speaking to as he sits in the driver seat of his 2019 Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Jonathan is my kind of guy. He's an east coaster with a history of riding bikes, listening to the likes of Nirvana & early 2000's pop punk, and he's been the one man band behind Brew Watches…that is, up until a week before recording this podcast. I'm excited to share his story and certainly appreciate his candor when it comes to his approach to design and decision making. I think you'll enjoy this one. This week on the podcast, Blake Buettner and Zach Weiss are joined by James Stacey. James wears many hats: he's a Senior Writer for Hodinkee, one half of the team that hosts The Grey Nato podcast (the other half, Jason Heaton, joined us previously), and he's the newly minted host of Hodinkee Radio, another watch related podcast you might be familiar with. This is a really fun conversation that touches on everything from the commonly owned Seiko divers among the three podcast participants, frustrations with Rolex waitlists, and selling the entire collection to fund a grail. This was a fun one – it turns out James is just as great as a podcast guest as he is as a host.To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Chances are good if you're listening to this you also listen to The Grey Nato podcast which today's guest co-hosts alongside friend and former guest, James Stacey. He's also a longtime contributor for Hodinkee, a Gear Patrol alum, and officially the first Hodinkee editor to be featured on Talking Watches. Of course I'm talking about Mr. Jason Heaton. I'm such a fan of his pragmatic approach to life and all of the above only support my admiration. This conversation was a fun one. We of course talk watches and gear, but we delve into the reasons why we enjoy what we like, and even to my surprise, we take several minutes going deep on the manufacturing process of Oreo cookies. Yes, Oreo cookies. Jason truly is “more than meets the eye” and I was excited to get a peek behind the curtain of his book, “Depth Charge” a fiction novel released 4 months ago and available through his website & the Hodinkee shop. Needless to say, I was thrilled to have Jason on the show and we wrap things up with a tiny bit of travel advice and a shout out segment to his wife Gishani who is awesome in her own right. This week, Guy and Lottie interview James Stacey, Partner and Global Director for Climate Change & Low Carbon Economy Transition at ERM. Today's episode is action-packed in more ways than one. Of course, the top billing goes to Jason Heaton, a product journalist who's penned his first novel, But before that, we have some action of a different kind, with Andy chatting to Mike Manjos from WatchBox, about the winners from Watches & Wonders. Then it's straight into the thriller that is Depth Charge. Heaton bills it as a classic paperback page-turner in the vein of Cussler or Fleming, with a healthy dose of diving, and of course, dive watches. And while Heaton doesn't reveal the watch his hero ended up wearing in the book, we do talk about the challenges of writing (and researching) a novel during a pandemic, updating thriller tropes while making them relevant for a modern audience. Of course, we also chat about the in-depth character development of a pivotal character and probably great guy, the henchman known as 'Scholz'. Back when Jason Heaton was first on the podcast, Felix petitioned strongly to be included as an evil henchman in the novel. Fast forward to today, and Felix's wish has been granted, with Scholz being described as an angular man with a shaved head and a moustache. What hasn't been revealed yet is if Henchman Scholz wears a watch. So we thought we'd have a little fun. Over on Instagram, we're running a comp where the best suggestion for Scholz's watch will win a signed copy of Depth Charge. Don't miss out. This episode is brought to you by WatchBox, the world's leading platform for buying, selling and trading pre-owned luxury timepieces. Andy gets a personalised post Watches & Wonders market wrap with Mike Manjos, where they chat about trends and 2021's hottest releases. For those with drive, the STANDARD H Podcast focuses on the lives and stories of those who have started or contributed in the growth of companies. This episode’s guest easily fulfills the latter category, and has done so in a major way. He’s a watch journalist, an automotive journalist, he cohosts one of my favorite podcasts, The Grey Nato, and he’s certainly no slouch in the photography department. Of course I’m talking about James Stacey. During what can only be described as HODINKEE's meteoric rise, James has contributed to some of my favorite HODINKEE segments, so I was looking forward to hearing a bit more about his background. As a writer, he discusses the importance of developing your own voice. We absolutely talk about his fascination for gold watches. And since he’s hosted a few episodes of Talking Watches, HODINKEE's flagship product, James offers us a backstage pass into what filming an episode entails. We go fairly deep on some car talk as well as photography including what gear he’s been using as well as how he typically captures watches. We wrap things up on a more personal note and James shares his weakness for female singers. James and I caught up several weeks ago making this episode a STANDARD H Podcast first by way of recording over Zoom. We each settled in with some bourbon so perhaps you’d like to do the same. This was a fun conversation, so I hope you enjoy it. What’s more important, hard work or good work? How do you really make a career out of blogging? What does someone do after they just drove a car over 200km/h? James is enthusiastic, in a soft-spoken kind of way, about his work. In fact, you might say he’s obsessed with getting a good story, writing a great post, or capturing a perfect image to bring his audience into what he sees. The first half of our conversation covered James’ journey to being a renowned watch blogger, as well as letting him show off his skills a little bit as a watch expert. He’s the real deal, folks. In our conversation today, James brings us more into his experience of creating great work to get noticed. He challenges us with an attitude of excellence in your craft. And he tells us what goes through his mind as he’s driving the most powerful and extravagant cars on the planet. You’re gonna love this opportunity to dive more into the fascinating life of James Stacey.
In our conversation today, James takes us through his story of getting into watches, and how he specifically worked his way up to make a full-time career out of this passion. Though you may not be a watch enthusiast, James’ story is incredibly relatable, as he brings us into what it takes to be aware of what you have and what is the right opportunity to move into. Can you turn your niche passion into a career? When is the right time to quit your day job? And how much can you really write about something as small as watches? I think you’ll be surprised by the answers to these questions and many more as we dig into today’s conversation. James Stacey is a writer, photographer, and always curious world-traveller. He is a Senior Writer with Hodinkee.com, a watch blog with millions of readers, as well as a magazine for automotive, architecture and all kinds of other intricately fascinating worlds of design. James also co-hosts of the Grey Nato podcast, which explores a little bit of everything, again with a main focus on watches. So, how does someone get into this niche market? Well, as you can imagine, there are sparks through his story of discovering the inner-working of watches, but it always comes back to his skills of writing and photography. James’ enthusiasm is infectious. Whatever he talks about, I find I want to ask him more about. James is a great case study of putting your strengths, skills, and passion together to bring you into a specific, unique role that may just be what you’re made for.
