Our conversation with Nadia Bevan continues our series profiling research about women's football. Angela Christian-Wilkes and Nadia delve into Nadia's ethnographic research on developing a women's football team at a club in Melbourne. We discuss the structures that include and exclude within community sport, building inclusive practices, and the messiness of insider research. Nadia is an early career researcher specialising in the barriers and enablers of access to sport for a range of groups, including women, girls, youth and the LGBTQIA+ community. She completed a PhD in Education at Monash University, looking at weight stigma as a barrier to physical activity. In this interview, Oni speaks with local father Nyck Jeanes. Nyck is also a musician, producer, independent journalist, and as one close friend describes him; a social engineer; he's out to help change the way we relate to one another, understand the world around us and live our lives. This interview was recorded nearly two years ago and with floods, and other events, it is only now we are airing it.PBB met Nyck in his former role as the president of BayFM, our local community radio station; the very place that Pregnancy, Birth, and Beyond started so many years ago. Nyck has always been a truth seeker who comes from a place of an eternal wonder like an inquisitive child but with wise and sharp intellect to investigate and articulate the wonder. He is a friend of many and has been a backbone for so many in the community.Nyck has a big heart, and enthusiasm to tell the story. In this interview, his story is a rich and deep story that includes a pivotal moment in his life; the birth and death of his first child. Nyck generously and wisely shares this story with us decades later. It includes the story of an inquest and the braveness of acting in a painful and challenging time.Oni was honoured to sit and witness Nyck talk as a father, after us sitting next to him at the radio station for many years as our show used to air just after his finished. It was only years later, after a spontaneous conversation at a cafe did Oni realise what Nyck had gone through as a father. Thank you Nyck and we hope you appreciate this conversation. North Carolina has more Rosenwald Schools than any other state but today, Rosenwald Schools are something of an endangered species. Many of them have been destroyed and most that are still standing remain in disrepair. How many of us are standing on top of history that we just don't know? What impact might that have on our teaching and school leadership? Today we dive into the incredible local history around Rosenwald Schools, the Jeanes Teachers, and how community organizing was a central tenet of their overall success. This episode was recorded on location at the St. Matthew Rosenwald School, and I'm joined by Bettie Murchison, co-founder of the North Carolina Rosenwald Schools Coalition, and Pryce Baldwin, a legendary and retired WCPSS educator and former administrator for the Helping Hands Project of Wake County, which seeks to provide African American mentors for African American boys in elementary and middle schools. Mr. Baldwin is also a member of the St. Matthew Baptist Church and was instrumental in saving the building from planned demolition in the early 1990s. Both Bettie and Pryce attended NC Rosenwald Schools in their youth.Thank you again to Aviva Kempner and the Ciesla Foundation for your support of this project, and to Ann McColl of the Innovation Project of North Carolina. Hosted by Michael Parker West.

This podcast discusses policy, but not the boring type, the type that talks about those who enact it…teachers! This paper won the PESP best paper for 2017. Dr. Laura Alfrey explains why enacting policy doesn't always work as the writers intended through the lens of 3 teachers. Episode 22 gave a background on how critical inquiry is embedded into the Australian Curriculum. Laura (twitter @LauraAlfrey) is a Senior Lecturer within the Faculty of Education at Monash University, Australia, with her main responsibilities relating broadly to Health and Physical Education. Her research has inclusion and teacher professional learning as it's central threads. Recent publications have explored phenomena such as fitness testing as a context for learning, critical inquiry, and stereotypes in Physical Education. Bernice Bennett welcomes Joanne Abel for a discussion of the Jeanes Teachers and their community organizing work to build Rosenwald Schools. Joanne Abel, adult programming and humanities librarian at Durham County Library, earned her bachelor of science degree in education from Georgia Southern College, her master of library science from North Carolina Central University, and her master of arts in liberal studies from Duke University. Joanne Abel's master's thesis was Persistence and Sacrifice: Durham County's African American Community and Durham's Jeanes Teachers Build Community Schools, 1900-1930. In 1907 Miss Anna T. Jeanes, a Quaker woman, donated $1,000,000, “for the furthering and fostering of rudimentary education” in small rural Negro schools. Though this fund was incorporated as the Negro Rural School Fund, it was usually referred to as the Jeanes Fund. Rosenwald devised a matching grant program to help build black schools in the South. If a rural black community raised a contribution and the white school board agreed to operate the facility, Rosenwald would contribute cash – usually about one fifth of the total project.
In 1915 Wake County, North Carolina a few African American women cleaned up a community and created schools with a bigger purpose.
