Not many people will know this; but Tom started his senior rugby career at London Welsh where he played for both the Druids and the 1st XV after a couple of seasons in the Colts. His dad had captained the club in the 70's and amassed over 230 appearances for London Welsh. We start the podcast discussing the state of Welsh rugby and how Tom transitioned from playing rugby to a career as a Media Pundit and Commentator. Haydn has made a massive contribution to London Welsh success off the pitch since he joined the Board when Project Reset was launched. We hear about how he and Pete Leyborne worked together to bring the Careers Hub to life and how they launched it to the players. Haydn gives us some great examples of how the Hub has helped the players excel off the pitch and how we use it to attract new players to the club. A Neath boy through and through, who came to London Welsh in the early 70's for a visit, before he settled in the area in the early 90's and never looked back. He became Chair of the Supporters Club when we had a professional team and then joined the Board where he has impacted so many of the players and their careers.Enjoy

Tom has only been with London Welsh for under 2 seasons, but boy what an impression he has made on and off the pitch. If would be fair to say he leads the charge in both and is very popular with our supporters with his all court play.He came to London Welsh from Manly Marlins and we get to hear about the Aussie Union pathway and the link this club has with that club. Tom also takes us through his route to London Welsh and just demonstrates the amount of work behind the scenes our amazing volunteers do for these players. We hear about the stories post match, his tour to France and a Christmas in Wales, but what hits homes is how the squad took Tom under their wings straight away and he instantly became one of the boys.Enjoy.

Our guest this week is Morgan Browne, a huge part of the London Welsh family. He joined the Little Wizards, aged 5 with the rest of his family and has been a player ever since. Morgan loved his minis and youth rugby at the club, especially the tours he went on in Wales or to Europe. He played for Hampton School and was captain in his final year where he led the team out at Twickenham and played against a certain Manu Tuilagi. He attended Cardiff Uni and joined the rugby club where he captained the Freshers in the Varsity. Rugby was taken very seriously at Cardiff, and he played mostly in the 1's and 2's; but also found other passions and was quite keen on his drama. Post uni he came to London and played a bit for some local clubs, until Lloyd Davies called him and the rest is history. He played 3-4 years for the Druids before reset and then had about 19 matches with the club when Cai and Sonny were the coaching team. Morgan had to retire due to concussion and he explains quite clearly how the club sat him down and explained the situation to him and put him first. An engaging, honest and a lovely human, who will continue to help this club in the future. Allen is a Welshman and London Welsh man through and through. Played for Risca all the way through school and then decided to get out of the Wales bubble to further both his academic and rugby education up in Newcastle. This is the time when Newcastle Falcons where at the top of the Premiership with the help of the backing of Sir John Hall's investment and full of International players, like Johnny Wilkinson, Tom May, Doddie Weir and Gary Armstrong. He enjoyed his 5 years there, but was asked to come back to Wales to have a crack at getting in the Wales squad and signed for Celtic Warriors. That didn't work out, so he had 6 months playing for Gordon's in Australia and some time at Henley, where he first encountered playing at London Welsh. He then had a conversation with Adrian and realised he could play top quality rugby at Old Deer Park and begin his career in the city. He played under Adrian, Martin Jones and Danny Wilson before deciding to study for an MBA to further his career. What you hear in this interview, is how deep the friendships Allen made at London Welsh forged by training on Tuesday and Thursday, followed by long bus trips to Cornwall or up North, where you really get to know your team mates. A real pleasure to hear from Allen. Enjoy

Gareth Rhys Owen introduces a celebration of the rugby life of JPR Williams, who has died aged 74. Recorded in 2019 to mark his 70th birthday, this programme hears from those who knew the Wales and Lions full-back best, including the late Phil Bennett, Steve Fenwick, Bob Hiller and Gareth Thomas. With his mutton chops, flowing locks and rolled-down socks he was instantly recognisable. An icon not just of Welsh rugby but of global sport. JPR is one of a select group of six Welshmen who won 3 Grand Slams in an international career that spanned three decades. He won 55 caps for Wales in an era when they reigned supreme – he took to the field 11 times against England and 11 times, he emerged victorious.JPR also toured twice with the British Lions – in 1971 in New Zealand with the series 2-1 in the Lions favour, he dropped a goal from 45 metres that led to a drawn game and meant they still remain the only Lions side to win a test series against the All Blacks. In 1974 he was a key member of the 'Invincibles' who won 21 of their 22 matches, drawing the final test with South Africa.Presenter Ross Harries celebrates John Peter Rhys Williams' life in rugby in the company of some of those who know him best: John Taylor, his teammate at London Welsh, Wales and the Lions and also best man at his wedding; Wales and Lions legends Phil Bennett and Steve Fenwick; former England captain and 71 Lions teammate Bob Hiller; and Wales centurion and Grand Slam-winning captain Gareth Thomas, himself another Bridgend old boy. It's widely accepted that he was one of a kind – unique and singular presence on the rugby field. JPR was fearless, he was peerless - but was he the greatest?

Our guest this week is former London Welsh scrum half Ian George.  Ian started his senior rugby career with Northampton Saints, but struggled to get a regular starting birth at his favourite position of scrum half as he was behind a current England International and was often playing centre.  He moved to Rosslyn Park to further his International aspirations and sat on the bench a few times, but was never capped by England. He captained the Barbarians a few times in his 14 appearances and won a County Final at Twickenham with Middlesex.  Ian moved to London Welsh in 1979 and Old Deer Park was his home for the next 6 seasons where he made scrum half position his own and really enjoyed his rugby at the club.  We chat about his current role at Saracens and what its like being a parent of a professional player, travelling the world watching your offspring play.  Enjoy

Our guest this week is our former hooker Chris Ritchie. Chris played back row all through his time at Swansea University, where he captained them and the Welsh Universities.  He went on to play for Oxford University for one season,  before settling down to play for Rosslyn Park whilst earning his keep in Insurance. A couple of years into his senior rugby career, he switched to hooker where he played for the rest of his playing days. Adrian Davies convinced Chris to come across the A316 to London Welsh to play at Level 2 where he became a firm favourite with the Supporters and players at the club.  143 appearances later during 6 eventful seasons he then retired, only to go on and play another 100 games for Rosslyn Park. Chris keeps in terrific shape through cycling challenges and loved reminiscing about his time at London Welsh and Rosslyn Park. Two great clubs. Enjoy

Phil Davies took him to Gloucester so he had a season in the Premiership, before going back to Scarlets to finish his professional career. Our guest this week, is current squad member and prop superstar Sam Mahoney.   Sam has played prop since his early days at Colchester RFC when he joined them at U11.  We get to learn about his journey in rugby and why he took a gap year to wait for the love of his life to join him at University and when he made the transition from Colts rugby to Senior rugby for Clacton.  At University he bonded with a fellow student and became best mates with Tom Baldwin, which you hear quite a bit about their rugby journey, through Uni to London 1 North and then to London Welsh together. Who was the London Welsh member who encouraged Sam to join the club?  Sam loved his first 3 seasons at the club and became a popular player with our supporters as he was the basis for our strong scrum and he also got over the whitewash a fair few times.  A few concussions prevented him getting a run of games in our second season and work and injury hampered his availability in the third season, but he has still made 39 appearances for us since project reset.  We hear he is desperate to come back and play once he can come back and train more often.  A top guy. Enjoy.

Hello and welcome to The Progress Theory where we discuss how to implement scientific principles to optimise human performance. In this episode, we have S&C and weightlifting coach, and University lecturer and researcher, Shaun Joffe. Shaun is without a doubt one of the most knowledgeable coaches on weightlifting in the country. His research has provided substance and direction to his coaching and programming decisions, and because of this, he has an amazing approach to weightlifting, which he shares in this episode. If you're a fan of programming to lift heavy barbells fast, this is the episode for you. In this episode, we discuss: 2:30 - Shaun's Background and where his passion for weightlifting came from 6:18 - Shaun's S&C experience 10:54 - How a wide variety of experiences can help develop you as a coach 15:52 - An introduction to weightlifting as a sport 19:44 - Determinants of weightlifting performance 25:17 - Weightlifting programming 32:30 - Weightlifting programme philosophy 37:05 - Technical differences between weightlifters and coaching weightlifting 48:31 - How to get involved with Weightlifting and Woking weightlifting club Final ThoughtsThank you Shaun for coming onto The Progress Theory and talking about his research and his ideas on weightlifting performance. What a great episode. It really showed how coaches can use research to guide programming decisions, and how overall philosophy is one of the clearest of any weightlifting coach I've ever heard. I just wanted to provide some final thoughts on key areas which really stood out to me. Firstly, I enjoyed hearing how Shaun uses clear objectives to influence when he is developing certain qualities in his weightlifting programming. For example, he talks about how max strength is a key determining factor for weightlifting performance, so he wants his lifters to hit certain strength targets before progressing on to focus programming on other qualities. This makes complete sense. Why move onto a new training block with a new focus if you haven't reached certain targets? And secondly, I love how he tailor his coaching deliberately to allow the athlete to find the appropriate weightlifting technique for themselves. Yes, there are key positions you want to hit, but how every lifter will achieve them will be different due to varying anthropometric and physical qualities. Forcing a certain technical weightlifting style onto someone could hinder their progression. Guide the athlete, don't tell them what to do all the time. Anyways I hope you enjoyed this episode and it gave you plenty of information and ideas on how to improve your weightlifting programming. It would be awesome if you could also leave us a review and share this episode on your insta story to help the show grow.
