Scott Becker created a massive media company while working as a lawyer. Over several decades, he and his CEO, Jessica Cole, built Becker's Healthcare, the largest media company focused solely on the healthcare industry. Today, with several daily newsletters, podcasts, conferences, and other events, Scott and Jessica develop an essential community for all healthcare business leaders. In this episode, hear how Scott built Becker's by doubling down on his passion and motivation for team building and developing people. He shares why having incredible people skills and being a warm and nice person is essential for all leaders. He talks about moving away from the "traditional" law firm partner approach towards a place of generosity, sharing opportunities with his team, and giving credit to those who do the work. You won't want to miss this engaging conversation.

In this episode, hosts Dr. Aaron Fritts and Dr. Bryan Hartley interview Scott Becker, founder and publisher of Becker's Healthcare, a media company dedicated to serving the specialized interests of healthcare leaders. --- SHOW NOTES Scott's background consists of a blend between healthcare law and media. He attended Harvard Law School, where he served as a teaching assistant for many students, including young President Obama, a third year law student at the time. In his twenties, Scott worked at a large firm and specialized in healthcare law, representing surgeons and surgical centers. While working within a large law firm, he realized that he wanted to take control of his own career and subsequently transitioned to a healthcare media focus in his 30s. He brought on Jessica Cole, a college student at the time, to handle team organization and commercialization for his small newsletter. Together, they expanded into websites, newsletters, and organized conferences in Chicago. Recognizing the growing interest in these conferences, Scott expanded his team to cater to a wider customer base. Due to higher demand and larger hospital budgets, hospitals and health systems ultimately became their primary focus. After talking to target customers, they developed separate media service lines including reading and audio content. Scott talks about the transition from brand advertising to lead generation advertising, a strategy focused on reaching the target customer and generating profits from those leads. The journalists at Becker's Healthcare generate these leads by consistently staying updated on healthcare leadership trends, evolving perspectives, and audience engagement to create personalized content and maintain their connection with the audience. Scott and the hosts explore the challenges of artificial intelligence and Chat GPT in engaging with audiences, strategies for distinguishing a business in a media landscape inundated with information, and methods for creating highly engaging and interactive conferences. This year marks the 29th Annual ASC Conference, with hundreds of participants and notable speakers including Rob Gronkowski and Mia Hamm. --- RESOURCES ASC Annual Conference https://conferences.beckershospitalreview.com/beckers-october-asc-annual-conference-2023 Becker's Hospital Review https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/ Good to Great by Jim Collins https://www.amazon.com/Good-Great-Some-Companies-Others/dp/0066620996 Peter Attia https://peterattiamd.com/

I spoke with founding member David Mosey from NYC-based post punk alternative rock collective London Plane. The band will be releasing their new album called "Bright Black" on June 17, 2022 on Declared Goods. London Plane is David Mosey (guitar and vocals), Jessica Cole (vocals), Bryan Garbe (drums), Grant Parker (bass), Julian Tulip (Synths) and Kristofer Widholm (guitar). Following the success of their debut album"New York Howl" in 2018, the band worked on new material in 2019 and early 2020. The result is "Bright Black'", an album packed with hope amidst cultural, sociopolitical, and ecological devastation, screaming a passionate battle cry back to the pop music spectrum. In effect, a hook-filled Avant-rock study in context and contradictions. The title track "Bright Black" at once an anti-war song, is a statement of hope - of brightness - amongst the invasion of darkness, both internal and external, imminent and eventual, this track sets the tone for the album as a whole. "Francesco "is a haunting goth-dance anthem that channels through a Latin prism. Equally inspired by a cloth-covered 1970s diary by an immigrant, found among personal belongings discarded on a New York curb and the hospitalization of Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy on the eve of his NYC performance, "Francesco" spins the tale of Catholic Saint, stigmatist, levitator and mystic Padre Pio as a young man.https://www.londonplanemusic.comhttps://londonplane.bandcamp.com/musicSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna RemixedEvery Saturday on ModSnap RadioKMOD: San Antonio"San Antonio's leading alternative streaming Radio Station since 2017"Listen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturna2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)#ModsnapRadio #Postpunk #goth #Industrial #Dark80s #DarkWave #ethereal #darkelectronic#DJNocturna #DJNocturnapresentstheQueenofWands #LondonPlane #DavidMosey #ShamelessPromotionPR

For our first episode, I sat down with Jessica Cole, the Development Services Innovation Lead for the city of Walnut Creek, California. Jessica and I met as Code for America fellows in 2016. During that year, we worked with different cities on using technology to improve how they deliver public services. After the end of our fellowship year, Jessica took the rest of the plunge into the public sector, and has been working with the city of Walnut Creek for the past five months. Although we'd kept in touch a bit, I didn't know too much about what Jessica had been working on in Walnut Creek. In this conversation, she filled me in on the importance and breadth of development services. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, including - what it takes to plan for a city's future - the motivation and purpose behind California's thousands of pages of building codes - why governments have been turning to innovation teams to tackle new kinds of problems - and Jessica's strategy for accomplishing "a disproportionate amount of good" in the world I had a lot of fun talking with Jessica, and I can't think of a better person with whom to start off the show. I think you'll enjoy our conversation as well.
