Sign up for the Pain Free Birth Doula Mastermind HERE https://pain-free-birth.mykajabi.com/doula-certification-waitlist  Welcome back to the Pain Free Birth Podcast! In this episode we're meeting two doulas, Jessica Grant and Kallie Caton, the founders of the “Birth Belongs to Women” movement. We discuss why birth does, indeed, belong to women, and how the medical system and current social/political movements are unfairly marginalizing women and doulas who believe birth belongs to women. We discuss many of the contemporary debates around being a doula and how Mamas like you can best prepare to work with doulas in today's climate. CHAPTERS 00:38 - The origin story of the Birth Belongs to Women movement, and the state of the Doula and medical birthing industries 07:26 - How birth should be (and why the birthing industry system is rigged) 13:13 - Why the phrase “birth belongs to women” is so resonant for some and polarizing to others in today's social climate 15:37 - “Inclusivity” in birthing 17:33 - Birth Belongs to Women is not anti-trans at all, it is pro-women. Karen's thoughts on forced gender-inclusive language. 22:53 - Doulas should stay true to themselves regardless of social or political pressure 25:50 - Many women have felt silenced or unable to speak their mind 27:36 - Restoring the sacredness to the experience and tradition of birthing 32:48 - Doula v Birth Worker and how centralized certification regimes effect the Doula tradition 36:53 - Is it possible for doulas to do good work within the hospital system? 38:51 - The doula is not the “rescuer” - and avoiding unfair dynamics between mothers and doulas 40:29 - What women getting pregnant now most need to understand 42:07 - Advice for women who want a doula but still need to give birth in a hospital 46:25 - Doula burnout and creating sustainable work for birthing professionals without “turning it into a business” 53:00 - The true calling and passion of Doulas to serve mothers 55:05 - The “scope” of a doula's work, and allowing the mother to have room for her own spiritual journey 56:25 - Healthy boundaries in doula work and why clients sometimes need to be turned down 1:00:10 - The future of the doula space 1:05:45 - Why there's so much fear and dogma in the medical birthing system CONNECT WITH BIRTH BELONGS TO WOMEN: Connect with Kallie here: instagram.com/kalliecaton Connect with Jessica here: instagram.com/jessiesvibe CONNECT WITH KAREN: Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@painfreebirthwithkarenwelton Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/painfreebirth Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/painfreebirth/ Spotify Podcast - https://open.spotify.com/show/5zEiKMIHFewZeVdzfBSEMS Apple Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/pain-free-birth/id1696179731 Website - https://painfreebirth.com/ Email List https://pain-free-birth.mykajabi.com/website-opt-in Learn more about Birth Belongs to Women → https://www.birthbelongstowomen.com/

Carl Orff was born in 1895 and passed away in 1982. He was a composer from Germany and a very important figure in elementary music education. Carl Orff showed a great deal of talent in music at an early age and his mother decided to have him start playing the piano at the age of 5. He was even writing his own music in his early years! He then started to take lessons on the cello, which is an instrument that is part of the string family.  Young Carl then added the organ as another instrument to learn. The organ is typically found in a church and has a bunch of pipes, large and small that are all connected to a large keyboard, and when you press a key down on the organ, it sends air through the pipes to make a large sound. Well, as the years went Carl continued to learn and began publishing music that he wrote at the age of 16 while continuing his studies into his 20’s and then began teaching. In 1924, he founded a school called the Günther School for gymnastics, music, and dance in Munich and was the head of the school until 1944 when it shut down. There he developed new methods of teaching kids music and called it “Schulwerk” which combines music, movement, drama, and speech. Many teachers use Carl Orff’s methods found in his published work even today! It allows kids to be in a natural state of play; making the best environment for learning music. So if you really enjoy music class, Mr. Carl Orff definitely played a role in making a music class fun. And not just for kids...for us teachers too. His most famous piece of music is Carmina Burana. Its epic sound is used in many events, commercials, and performances. Make sure to visit the show notes to find an incredible video and performance of Carl Orff’s opening to the awesome piece “Carmina Burana”.   Speaking of fun, well,  Easter is coming, and what better way to celebrate than with the Easter Bunny Rap. You know how Mr. Carl Orff combined movement and music. Well, in this song, you will get to move along with some body percussion. In the song, you will echo a pattern that is performed, which means the body percussion part will be heard and you have to perform it back. So get your ears ready. And if you want to check out the video that goes along with the Easter Bunny Rap, make sure to check the show notes to watch the video! And now we present; The Easter Bunny Rap!        Just Chattin’: Jessica Graham is from Michigan and currently lives in Texas where she teaches middle school music. Prior to her teaching Middle School, she taught elementary General music for 14 years. Jessica is also the host and creator of the podcast Afternoon Ti; a podcast giving music educators ideas and experiences in teaching music. Today we discuss movement activities that can be done at home or in school and can be reached virtually for free. There are many more resources she offered that we did not discuss that can be found in the show notes. We hope you enjoy this interview. Hi Jessica and welcome to the show. Hi Bill thank you for having me. Absolutely and it’s great to have you on the show here. And what I always like to start with is for you to tell us a little bit about your journey with music as a kid. You know you could tell us what you did in school and maybe if you took private lessons or take private lessons,  so what kind of things did you experience as a kid? So, my mom was a music teacher so I grew up with music in the house and she accompanied local choirs especially the high school choir. And one of my first musical experiences I would say was learning the songs to Fame the musical because that was the music she was playing on the piano. So at the age of like three or four I would walk around the house singing you know all of the fame songs and yeah I just love that. And so I would go to all of her rehearsals and I would sit and listen to the choirs and watch her play. And I took piano lessons for years and for the most part enjoyed that. It was always hard to practice. I like performing the songs but the practicing got easier as I got older. And then I really loved dance so I took dance for years. Loved Hip Hop and Jazz and ballet and all the things. And in high school and middle school and all through college I enjoyed singing in choir. So I really enjoyed doing a lot with movement and choral singing and playing piano. Yeah that’s awesome, yeah, so, my mom was actually a music teacher as well. Both my parents were music majors and my mom was my teacher for many years. Yeah yeah yeah so I hear you on all the music just always be in there in the house yeah that's super cool.  So currently you are a music teacher. So where do you teach and what grades do you teach now? I teach grades 5 through 8 at a school called Good Shepherd Episcopal School in Dallas Texas. And this will be my sixth year teaching there and before that I taught for 14 years in the public school system K through 5. So are you originally from Texas? No, I grew up in Michigan and then went to school in Tennessee and came back to Michigan and I met my husband long distance and it was easier for me to move then for his career to move. So made the way down here and now I’m texan at heart for sure. Yeah that's awesome so you also have a podcast and it's called Afternoon Ti and it's a podcast for music teachers like myself. And so could you tell us a little bit about the show? Sure. So as a music teacher I feel like every music teacher has something to share and something different or a different slant to help other music teachers. And I felt like I was at a point where I had some ideas that I thought might be helpful for other teachers and so I decided to start using the things I had around my house, a microphone and my computer and oftentimes we would go in our master bedroom closet and just recording a very simplistic way. But to give other teachers ideas of what to do with movement or singing or even teacher self-care, how to take care of your teacher-health your voice and different things that you can do not only for your students in the community but as a teacher personally. So I enjoy interviewing people like you do and just learning. I feel like I've learned so much by talking to other music teachers and just sharing what I can in whatever way I can just to hope that it helped somebody else. I love that and yeah I listen to your show and it really does you really do get a lot of ideas you know just from listening and you also get an idea of like oh yeah yeah what I'm doing is working well. Yeah so I thought it's really a great resource and any music teachers listening or even if you are a parent is doing homeschooling checking out the podcast is going to help with some things. So and we're going to talk even more about some cool activities here. but before I get to that I do want to let everyone know that it's afternoon ti TI right? Which is do re me fa so la ti right that note. I love that play on words,  it's great. So let’s get to some of these cool movement activities. You know one of the things that were experiencing right now are kids at home and one of the things that I love to do in my music classes to get kids moving right we want kids to move doing it eurhythmics which is basically kids getting up in and moving around to the music, feeling the beat, bouncing balls and doing all of these fun things that kids love to do but are also helping them develop musically. So we thought it’d be neat to discuss some movement activities that we could offer our audience so that kids could do these activities at home. They're all online-based so let’s hear some, you've got some great online resources. What I tried to think of was finding resources that were not only available online but if teachers were using them in the classroom since we're having to keep that 6 foot distance. But we want our kids to still participate in movement and moving their bodies to music so the first one I thought of was GoNoodle. I know a lot of people may know about that one but it's a great one to mention because it can cover such a wide age span. And I feel like it's simple for any teacher really to put it on and the kids know instinctively what to do and copy. So that’s one I want to mention. And then the second one has been a favorite of mine for several years and it's body percussion and it's by a  man named Santi Seratosa. And his are more intricate though I have found ways to simplify. You can simply find a pattern you like that he shares and imitate it and do it longer over a period of time rather than going super fast through it. But he does things with chairs or in boxes or layering different ostinato patterns so that then you can allow students to maybe choose one and copy it or you can even use the tutorials that he gives. And I love there's some pop songs he does like Try by Colbie Caillat or something just like this by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay and he'll walk you through all the body percussion. A lot of it sitting in chairs which is also ideal for where we're at right now it's movement but the kids are isolated. But he also has some that have to do with Shostakovich’s Waltz  and Vivaldi's Four Seasons. And you can go right through the tutorials and as a teacher I've gone through it and then I made kind of notes about what he's doing and then I find where I need to simplify. But as far as parents being at home they may be cool ones to watch and then create your own if it's too difficult. Or take parts of it so those are two things I would mention that way you have an idea for younger students but you can also push some of your older students or even adults might enjoy it. I like how that website really focuses on not just the classical music right but they want to include pop music as well. So yeah that's a lot of fun, great. Well thank you so much and there's actually a bunch of other parts that you gave me here which is which is awesome. And we're going to include those in the show notes and we’ll also put Afternoon Ti in the show notes. So yeah I thank you so much Jessica for being on the show and sharing your knowledge. I know you have a lot there so it's really just it's great. I love talking to other music teachers and getting ideas and then sharing that so that we can kid’s experiencing music even better so well thank you so much I'll see you. Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner, your host for this early December holiday season edition of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and have I got clips for you!  (As I'm typing this I'm noticing that "have I got clips for you" feels like a question but if I were to put a question mark at the end of that sentence it feels…well, just wrong. I understand it's a rhetorical question but I never really stopped to think about what it looks like on paper or, in this case, a computer monitor…) Have I got clips for you? Of course I do — this is a clips addition of Succotash. It would be misleading and, frankly, weird if I didn't.  I've got clips from: Maltin on Movies, Christal Clear The Podcast, Master Manual, High Content Pod, Unstructured, Shenk, and Weird Adults with Little Esther. We've also got a double dose of raging moderate Will Durst's Burst O' Durst segment. Plus a reading from the website of our still-fairly-new sponsor TrumPoetry.com. Ready?  Let's go!  CLIPS  Master ManualHarmontown's "Dungeon Master to the Stars" Spencer Crittenden and game designer Cohen Edenfield discuss the finer points of leading a role-playing session in this surprisingly accessible advice show. Our clip is from the inaugural episode of Master Manual. In the episode, Spencer and Cohen answer questions and riff up a fresh new take on vampires, while the clip is from a segment called "Alternate Monster Lore". Maltin on Movies This soundcast should perhaps be entitled Maltins On Movies, as legendary film critic Leonard Maltin AND his daughter Jessie are the ultimate movie fans. They love talking about movies, especially with people who share their enthusiasm. In the epi released on November 2nd this year, their guest was comedian Dennis Miller, who is a diehard film buff. In the snippet we feature, Dennis recounts a past encounter with Leonard Maltin seasoned with references, and a discussion of The McCarthy Era of Hollywood History, as well as the beginning of a discussion about character actors. Unstructured Unstructured is a chat with people who are changing the world around them, through teaching, creating, or just living as an example. And when meeting folks, we can learn from each other, be inspired, and maybe even make a new friend, together. OUr clip is from Epi84 of the show, which dropped on October 25th of this year and featured Susan Bennett, who furnished the original voice of Siri, Apple's voice UI. She describes the recording process that when into creating Siri's voice.  ShenkComedian Sara Weinshenk interviews comedians, musicians & artists living in LA. Topics include food, fashion, cannabis & comedy. The clip we're featuring comes from the episode entitled, "Mango Juul Pods, Snail Essence & Feet Pics W/ Comedian Brandon Wardell", from this past November. Sara and Brandon yack about fashion and speculate on life as a gamer. Weird Adults with Little Esther"Little Esther" Povitsky finds out what makes her fellow comedian friends both weird and adult with an irreplaceable quirk and charm not found anywhere else. This show seems to have largely gone away but it popped back on the radar last March following a live edition performed as part of the San Francisco Sketchfest. Esther was joined by Nick Wiger of Doughboys soundcast fame where they mostly talked about food. In the clip, the host mentions she has jaw pain and that leads to a conversation about strange interactions with a few medical professionals. Christal Clear The PodcastSeeking clarity in life, to make the most of my life. "Christal Clear" is my affirmation. Our clip comes from the "Be My Guest" episode from last October, where host Christal discusses the adjustments one makes when one receives feedback on their shows and guest Jae (who has been running the Pod Dealer Network for almost a year as of this recording) explores the anxieties of being the sole host of a show. High Content Hosted by Iraj Lopez and Joe Buratti, High Content had its first live episode last month at the Savage Henry Comedy Club in Eureka, California. After local comedians Jessica Grant and Nando Molina gave interviews the hosts of HiC unexpectedly invited me up on stage for a segment. Here is a bit that I clipped off for you from the "Would You Rather" portion of the interview. And there you have it... or rather here you had it... "it" being another "Succotash The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast" clips edition... ...that is still underway now that I think about it so (ahem) here you are having it, another edition of "Succotash The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast".  Thank you for listening, thank you for retweeting us when you see our links ,and thank you for visiting www.succotashshow.com, clicking the Amazon banner right near the top of the page, and shopping as you normally would because when you do that, Amazon cuts us a small portion of that which goes to our server costs. (If you haven't done that before It's perfectly fine because we love you anyway…)  If you are listening…we also love those who don't listen as long as they are also reasonably good people…and by "We" I mean "Me". I need to clarify that because I don't wish to speak on behalf of other people when it pertains to love. It's not a healthy habit to get into…and as an expectant father I need to maintain my health in as many areas as I can.  So anyway, thank you for listening and if you like us a little you might tell your friends about us...which is one of the best ways of helping us out, and what we mean when we gently urge you to (Please) Pass the Succotash… — Tyson Saner

Yes, it is I...Tyson Saner. Very grateful that you are joining me, brand new host of this program and pale imitation of former host Marc Hershon. It is a great honor to be entrusted with the keys to the Succotash SoundCast Soundkingdom and I look forward to carrying on the tradition that has been listening to and sampling Comedy (and otherwise) Soundcasts for your own personal variety show, between your ears, in the theater of your mind... Today I have for you what can best be described as an average amount of soundcast clips.  Six seems to be the magic number but it's certainly not set in stone as long-time listeners of this program can attest to. Soundcasts to look forward to hearing clips from include Fascination Street, Logical Nonsense, Your Mom's House, The Stanley and Branley Show, The Los Angeles Breakfast Club: On The Air, and the High Content Podcast. We also have a double dose of comedian and raging moderate Will Durst's famed "Burst O' Durst" segments. I am grateful that Mr. Durst has agreed to continue supplying us with his unique take on the politics of our times. You'll be hearing those later in the program. And if you're in or near the San Fransisco Bay Area you will find, on the aformentioned website, dates, locations, and tickets for Durst's latest one-man show: Durst Case Scenario: Mid Term Madness. And, as always, Succotash is sponsored by Henderson's Pants. As the associate producer of this show, when I was finding clips for this program and sending them off to Mr. Hershon I NOW realize that a few of my contributions over the years may have stretched the definition of "Comedy" a bit.  Sometimes my decision to submit a clip was made by it being interesting or different or having a particular quality about them that I felt made them worthy of inclusion on Succotash.  (I always had backup ideas for clips to submit in case my submissions couldn't be used for whatever reason but to Mr. Hershon's great credit, my submissions were rarely, if ever, unused.) Now I am completely aware that something "having a particular quality about them" is nebulous at best and nothing if not 100% a subjective viewpoint. Whether or not something is "interesting" or "different" is also, pretty much 100% subjective.  This, of course applies to comedy. Maybe not 100% with comedy but very probably. Anyway, just something to bear in mind as we explore the highways and byways of Soundcastland together. THE CLIPS Fascination StreetIt debuted on iTunes on July 3rd, 2017 and it is Hosted By Steve Owens of San Antonio, Texas. Last year, in 2017, Mr. Owens had the good fortune to spend a great deal of time with actor and Hollywood Legend, Clint Howard. There is a two-part episode of Fascination Street that is with Mr. Howard. The clip you are about to hear is from an interview that Mr. Owens had with Clint's father, another Hollywood legend, the Late Patriarch of the Howard family of actors and entertainers, Rance Howard.  According to Mr. Owens, this is the last interview Mr. Rance Howard ever gave. Logical NonsenseHere's a soundcast from Ontario, Canada whose 1st episode is listed on iTunes as having been posted in October of 2017.  The description of the show on Soundcloud and iTunes is: "Jab & Breezy take an explicit & comedic look into popular pop culture topics that make no sense to them. Every Tuesday without shame they will share their experiences and opinions while dissecting the nonsense and sharing new mind blowing facts and history that will leave you cry laughing. Follow us to join in our weekly challenges, where J & B compete against each other in a unique contest of wits or might." Your Mom's HouseHosts Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitsky podcast is part of the "All Things Comedy" network which, according to Wikipedia, "is a digital media co-operative and content creation studio and home to a community of professional comedians. It is the brainchild of comedians Al Madrigal and Bill Burr, founded in October 2012." I previously grabbed a clip of their episode "403" back for Succotash Epi 156 "Boozin' With Bill is Back" from July 29th, 2017 Sometimes they have guest for their program - which is often streamed LIVE on YouTube - this Clip is from episode 435 in which they do not have a guest… The Stanley and Branley ShowSometimes a soundcast will have very little biographical information attatched to their pages. The Stanley and Branley Show is one of those soundcasts. The description for the show on both their Soundcloud and iTunes page reads as follows: "Welcome to the worst call-in show you never heard." So far they have 60 episodes with several mini or bonus episodes and they've been posting on iTunes since May of 2016.  This clip is from episode 60, published February 13th 2018, and in it Stanley and Branley listen to dating advice from a YouTube video. If you want to hear more of these mysterious Soundcasters you can go to the aformentioned Soundcloud or iTunes. The Los Angeles Breakfast Club: On The AirIf you pay a visit to the Los Angeles Breakfast Club homesite, you will see the cheerful sentiment "Making Los Angeles a better place since 1925".  In case you have never heard of the Los Angeles Breakfast Club - or the LABC for short - you can also read the description of the club there OR listen to this epi of Succotash, during which I will read it to you. On February 28th, 2017 the Los Angeles Breakfast Club : On The Air soundcast debuted.  As described by host Phil Leirness in this same episode, "for many decades, The Los Angeles Breakfast Club was a fixture on the Radio" and on the soundcast Mr. Leirness called it a "return of sorts to the days of yesteryear..." The show features interviews, newsreel clips, a selection of musical interludes from throughout the near-century the LABC has been operating and various speakers who share their experiences and generally have a good time. Succotash's very own former-host-turned-executive producer, Marc Hershon, began announcing duties for this program in its 6th episode, published July 1st, 2017. High Content Podcast I became aware of this show as I was looking for soundcast-related gigs on Craigslist.  I happened across an ad from someone looking to start a soundcast who was seeking a co-host.  That someone was High Content Podcast's host, Iraj Lopez, who dropped his first episode on Soundcloud back in June of 2017.  Since then he has released episodes consistently, occasionally with co-host Joe Buratti, guests such as Ariel Robinson and comedians local to Humboldt County where this soundcast is based, including Joshua Barnes, Jessica Grant, and Matt Redbeard.  Also featured in the episode with Matt Redbeard was Chris Durant, the co-creator of Savage Henry Magazine - a well-known humor publication in Humboldt County that sponsors many comedy events throughout the year including a comedy festival every Labor Day weekend that had its sixth iteration in September of 2017. The show's topics range from pop culture, politics, science, nature and what is both frightening and exiting about humanity.  When there isn't a co-host or guest the show features host Iraj Lopez brainstorming ways to improve the world and various "what-if" scenarios. Our clip is from Episode 27, entitled "I want to boil a gallon of cum," posted on Feb 18th, 2018. Well, that about does it.  It's been a sort-of-but-not-really maiden voyage.   I'd like to thank Kenny Durgess, Will Durst, Joe Paulino, Scott Carvey, Bill Heywatt, Henderson's Pants and of course our Executive Producer Marc Hershon for their support and contributions to this episode and EVERY episode of Succotash that came before I had even heard of the program back when Mr. Hershon started posting episodes in March of 2011. I hope you will continue this journey of discovery with me and I look forward to continuing to bring you this "Whitman's Sampler" of soundcasts from all around the world where they record in English. For everyone here I bid you farewell and gently remind you to please, Pass the Succotash... — Tyson Saner
