The Super Human Life
How To Fight The Crisis Of Masculinity In The Modern Church w/ Jake Hamilton | Ep. 262

The Super Human Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2024 61:25

In episode 262 of The Super Human Life, host Frank Rich interviews Jake Hamilton. They discuss the crisis of masculinity within the church and the root of the problem. Jake explains that the lack of rites of passage and initiation rituals in our culture and the church leads to a confusion of responsibilities between boyhood and manhood. This confusion results in an ego-driven pursuit of masculinity, where men seek to be heroes rather than warriors and prioritize their own desires above all else. Hamilton emphasizes the importance of honoring God, protecting women, and preparing children as the main responsibilities of a man. He also discusses the feminization of the church and the need for men to embrace suffering, sacrifice, and a bigger vision for their lives.    In this conversation, Jake Hamilton and Frank Rich discuss the importance of healing and integration in order to break cycles and live a whole and authentic life. They explore the concept of departing from business as usual and embarking on a journey of self-discovery and growth. They emphasize the need for men to engage with their emotions, particularly grief, in order to experience true transformation. The conversation also touches on the crisis of masculinity in the church and the importance of initiation and role models for young boys. Overall, the conversation highlights the path to biblical masculinity and the power of living a life aligned with one's values and purpose.   Takeaways The crisis of masculinity within the church is rooted in the lack of rites of passage and initiation rituals in our culture and the church.   Men need to clearly understand the responsibilities of manhood, which include honoring God, protecting women, and preparing children.   The ego-driven pursuit of masculinity leads to a self-centered approach to life and a disconnection from God and others.   The church has become feminized and focused on emotional experiences rather than the sacrificial nature of masculinity.   Men need to embrace suffering, sacrifice, and a bigger vision for their lives in order to fulfill their true purpose. Healing and integration are essential for breaking cycles and living a whole and authentic life.   Engaging with emotions, particularly grief, is necessary for true transformation.   The crisis of masculinity in the church can be addressed through initiation and the presence of positive role models.   Living a life aligned with one's values and purpose leads to fulfillment and impact.   Jake Hamilton has been in full-time active ministry for over two decades. He has been a church planter in Southern California, a creative entrepreneur since he started his first business painting murals at the age of 15, as well as a worship leader on a local level and globally as a part of Jesus Culture Music for several years. His radical style of music has been described by Relevant Magazine as “a cross between Led Zeppelin and the Foo Fighters.” He is also a dynamic preacher and communicator speaking in schools and stadiums across the globe, he has been an evangelist both on the streets and in global church movements, spent time as a local youth pastor in a thriving creative community, launched a 24-hour a house of prayer in his home city of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and has been a songwriter whose songs have been sung and recorded around the world. He and his wife, Nicci, have also fueled a movement called OneFlesh, which has focused specifically on marriages and family—proclaiming the coming reformation in the Church and seeing hundreds of marriages restored and redeemed even years after divorce. He is currently heading a men's movement called THE FIGHT, gathering men to make agreement with their story and get acquainted with death as they learn what it means to walk in biblical manhood as modeled by Jesus Christ. As an artist he desires to push the limits of creativity, and as a father and a husband he is committed to his family first. But above any of his endorsements and accomplishments, he is a lover of Jesus Christ with the ability to lead others into the same encounter that transformed his life over 25 years ago. He has always said his goal was simple, “I want to spend my life throwing keys into prison cells.”

dadAWESOME   We're on a mission to add LIFE to the dad life. We're passionate about helping dads live fully alive as they lead their kids to God's awesomeness.  | YouTube |  Instagram | Facebook | Twitter   Derek Johnson   Derek Johnson is a singer-songwriter who has a heart to see people experience the power and extravagant love of God through music that carries God's presence and anointing. He led worship at Bethel Church in Redding, CA for 5 years before relocating to the Sacramento area with the Jesus Culture team. He believes strongly in serving the local church and is a Jesus Culture Music artist and worship leader at Jesus Culture Sacramento. His heart is to see people transformed by encounters with Jesus who then transform the culture they live in. Derek is a relevant voice to this generation with a strong anointing for bringing intimacy and the joy of the Lord through praise and worship.   Show Notes:   4:40 - "It's been a continuous journey that I've found with my daughter and now with my son is when you have children, I think more than even in marriage, you start to understand what love actually is and what love looks like, and kind of that responsibility in that way, that hits you." 14:09 - Books by John Eldredge - Wild and Heart and Fathered by God  14:23 - Takeaways from the book Fathered by God:  "One, we need to be really intentional in the way that we father our kids, that really it is going to have to happen on purpose. To get in there and have the conversations and have the heart connection, realizing that our kids don't know how to do it." 15:19 - Creating "heartstrings" with our kids - where they open their hearts to us and we open our hearts to them. 15:45 - It's important to have grace for ourselves. 17:45 - The Voice of the Heart book by Chip Dodd 17:50 -  "What I loved about Fathered by God was actually just the permission to recognize the gaps, to feel the pain of the gaps." 18:36 - Takeaways from the book The Voice of the Heart by Chip Dodd - "The cool thing that this book highlights is that your anger is connected to passion. So somewhere in there, if you filter that pain and that anger correctly, what you'll find is something you're actually deeply passionate about." 19:30 - "So these books are super instrumental and I think connecting that, God created us with emotions. They are there for a reason. They do need to be managed and certainly they need to be touched by the Holy spirit so areas can heal. But they're supposed to be in there." 20:00 - "And I think if, for us, as men, for us as fathers, if we have a vision - and we should have this vision - to have kids who are emotionally healthy and capable in their friendships and their marriages and their careers, then we have to begin by doing the inner work ourselves. And just being that example." 23:55 - Sharing the difficult journey of conceiving a second baby 31:55 - On living out Christian values with our kids: "I don't even want to list it out on a list and so that they can memorize it. I'm like, I want to live it so that you can catch it."   Conversation Links:   Derek Johnson Worship Artist Jesus Culture - https://jesusculture.com/ Make a Donation to dadAWESOME Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team   Full Transcript:    https://dadawesome.org/162notes/

Few churches have had the global impact that Bethel Redding and it’s spin off ministry of Jesus Culture Music have had over the past dozen years.  Kim Walker-Smith, one of the original Bethel worship leaders, helped launch a movement of worship and intimacy with God that has touched the nations and spearheaded ministry through the wildly popular Jesus Culture movement... and she’s not slowing down. John Chisum has a candid conversation with Kim about worship, the struggles of leadership, managing family and ministry, and the traumas of her childhood that have made her a deep-feeling worshiper. Kim shares openly about childhood abuse and trauma and the miraculous healing journey God has led her through from her book, Brave Surrender: Let God’s Love Rewrite Your Story (Zondervan: 2019). Celebrating the release of her new solo album Wild Heart, Kim says, "My last record, On My Side, was a collection of songs written from a desert season of my life. I was processing grief, anger, and pain. God met me in the desert and brought life and healing. Emerging from the desert, ushered me into a season fresh with new life. This new album is a strong declaration of freedom and who God is. On the other side of a desert season is growth, deeper connection to Jesus, and a new authority. In the desert, all my doubts and questions came to the surface. I wondered if God was truly as good and as faithful as He says. I asked if He could truly bring the freedom I longed for and the healing I needed. He met me in that place and not only proved His faithfulness, but taught me in greater measure who He is."  If you love Bethel Worship and Jesus Culture, don’t miss this powerful conversation with iconic worship leader and songwriter, Kim Walker-Smith.
