In 1978, Joe Dante (Gremlins, Gremlins 2) brought us the first in a string of Piranha films. Starting as a fun horror/comedy riding on the back of the Jaws craze, the spirit was somehow lost as the series continued from Piranha 2: The Spawning (1982) to Piranha 3D (2010) to the last and likely final installment Piranha 3DD (2012). Swimming in a sea of wasted potential, Piranha 3DD exists as a boner-comedy conundrum, boasting a barely feature length - the majority of which is more boner than comedy - the film somehow pulls off a surprisingly hilarious and gory finish, worthy of any lowbrow schlock-lovers time!

From his humble beginnings working for the great Roger Corman and the lifelong friendship he formed with Joe Dante (GREMLINS)… to screening movies with the Jerry Garcia… to having a projectionist literally close the curtains in the middle of his test screening for 1978's DEATHSPORT… to his first major studio directing gig working with the legendary Andy Kaufman on 1981's HEARTBEEPS… to how his early years working at the Fillmore East lead to his 1983 film GET CRAZY… to making the move into directing television and music videos… to the difficult time he had making CADDYSHACK II… to his prolific success directing episodes of FAME, ST. ELSEWHERE, MOONLIGHTING, ALLY MCBEAL, HEROES, NASHVILLE, and more… Allan candidly shares some of his most amazing stories, triumphs, and struggles over the course of this riveting 2 hour conversation. Also, the group does their best to provide “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker struggling with self doubt, Adam passes on “Donna” several times, and Allan attends a Christmas party to remember at Mick Jagger's house!
Alan Trezza wrote WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS, a horror-thriller set during the "Satanic Panic" craze of the 1980s. It was directed by Marc Meyers (MY FRIEND DAHMER) and starred Alexandra Daddario, Keean Johnson and Johnny Knoxville. The film made it's US premiere at the 2019 Fantastic Fest film festival in Austin and was released on all digital outlets in early 2020. Alan also wrote the zombie-comedy BURYING THE EX, which was directed by horror icon Joe Dante (GREMLINS) and starred Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene and Alexandra Daddario. The film premiered at the 2014 Venice Film Festival and received a theatrical run in the summer of 2015. Alan has sold scripts to Paramount Pictures and Miramax Films and is currently developing a LatinX-themed horror film and a supernatural-thriller TV series.

[School of Movies 2023] For our Halloween Spooktacular episodes we begin with a compilation of three After School Club shows, covering the first three of the eight instalments in the Howling franchise. However, despite two of them being from the same director (Philippe Mora) and two of them involving the writer of the original book (Gary Brandner) I struggle to think of three films that feel less like each other in a series. The incoherence and absence of any connective tissue or even thematic consistency almost seems intentional. And it might be a dismal and disjointed experience if it wasn't so hilarious! The 1981 original, directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, Matinee) is most definitely the nastiest, with the Mum from E.T. (Dee Wallace) being stalked by a werewolf, which then leads to a communal retreat that hosts the world's most obvious werewolf cult. But the 1985 second film "Your Sister is a Werewolf" then seems to yank us away to find out what's happening in the former Czech Republic (what's happening is softcore werewolf orgies and an unfortunate dwarf whose eyes explode!). And then the 1987 third instalment, "The Marsupials" asks the question "What if werewolves... but also kangaroos?" as they drag us, kicking and screaming to Australia for some of the most nonsensical non sequiturs we have ever heard. All told, this is as loosely connected as Cannon's Ninja Trilogy and ultimately just as rewarding to uncover. Next week; grab your stockings and pumpkins because it's high time for the Nightmare before Christmas!

Chris Condon is the author of That Texas Blood (Image Comics) due out June 24th and is my guest on this installment of Creator Talks. This neo-noir crime comic book series opens with 70 year-old Texas Sheriff Joe Bob Coates and the search for a casserole dish. Chris Condon explains what makes his comic book a neo-noir crime story and how it has changed throughout its development from film to comic. I learn from Chris why Ambrose County, Texas is the perfect setting for the story, from it's unique culture to its haunting landscape. He also shares the experience of growing up in the small town of Metuchen, NJ including: who were some of the famous people that lived there and its food scene. Chris had a different childhood from the other kids in his neighborhood. His parents raised him on 1950s television and movies which had a significant impact on his writing style. Another major influence on Chris' writing was the unique educational experience he received working for director Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling). Chris explains what made that opportunity one of the best decisions he made on his path to becoming a professional writer. Jacob Phillips (son of artist Sean Phillips) is the artist on this new series. Jacob was the colorist of Ed Brubaker's most recent Criminal series. That Texas Blood is Jacob's first solo work. Chris talks about how he joined forces with Jacob and what he brings to the series. In closing I Kick Back With The Creator to learn more about Chris and his other interests and experiences both inside and outside of comics. Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts More about That Texas Blood
We continue our month of Joe Dante with a look at perhaps one of the zanier films in his filmography - Gremlins 2: The New Batch. There's so much to love here, from the wonderful puppet design to the brilliant and comedic turn from Christopher Lee. Dante even got Chuck Jones to do the intro to the film, which should tell you everything else you need to know.We also briefly discuss his film Small Soldiers and get into some of the hype surrounding that film. There's a lot of discussion packed into this episode so be sure to keep your Mogwai hidden away in a cool, dry place (preferably with Rambo playing on a nearby TV) before settling down to listen to this week's episode.
One was a direct-to-video rehash of a fledgling studio's biggest success; the other, was a multimillion dollar behemoth that should have taken the world by storm. How do they compare? This is our first "VERSUS MODE" episode, and we plan to pit more comparable movies against each other in the future. Please let us know what you think! Demonic Toys, released 1992, was shot on a shoestring budget with handpuppets. These puppets would go on to make cameo appearances in The Dollman vs. The Demonic Toys, The Puppet Master vs. The Demonic Toys, Devil Dolls, The Haunted Dollhouse, and Evil Bong and ultimately get their own sequel 18 years later in The Demonic Toys 2: Personal Demons. The puppets were actually referenced in Krampus, with very similar toys, with the same penchant for bloodshed. The film was written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Dark City, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Nick Fury: Agent of Shield, Blade, Blade II, Blade Trinity, Jumper, Ghostrider Spirit of Vengeance... are you seeing a theme here?). Goyer's story involves a demon, trapped in a nether realm, trying to possess the unborn, bastard child of a recently widowed police officer. Charles Band, head of Full Moon Films, produced this film, as he had 304 others. If you compiled all the budgets to his films, you still might not even total the budget of its competitor on this episode: Small Soldiers. His brother, Richard Band, did the music. Totally appropriate name, right? Now Small Soldiers had a budget of $40,000,000. It was directed by the prolific Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling). Stan Winston (Terminator, Predator, Alien) designed and made the titular Small Soldiers. It had the amazing orchestration of Jerry buttfucking Goldsmith (Star Trek, Jurassic Park, Rambo). The film also spawned a toy line and multiple video games. The film pits the Commando Elite (basically G.I. Joes) against the Gorgonites (kinda think Masters of the Universe... oh, and Frank Langella who played Skeletor plays the Gorgonite leader, Archer!). Blah blah, technobabble, the animatronic toys actually go crazy in an imperialist quest to subjugate and destroy the monster toys, upheaving a suburban town. Sadly, this was Phil Hartman's last film. Aside from being about 30 minutes too long, this was a decent sendoff to a comedy legend. Comedy powerhouses Jay Mohr, David Cross, and Denis Leary create a great backdrop to to a mosaic of special effects and mayhem. As we contrast the two, we discuss special effects, plot/ story, cinematography, acting, directing, music, basically everything that makes a movie not suck.
