Nat, Cody, and Robert take a look back at the film that basically ended Andy Kaufman's film career before it could launch with 1981's HEARTBEEPS. And for some reason, the film apparently affected the first 25 minutes of recording, so apologies folks for the subpar audio. Time tracks: 0:00:00- HEARTBEEPS Discussion 49:48 - Next Movie and Outro

Heartbeeps was meant to serve as the big screen launching pad for comedian Andy Kaufman. It backfired. Why? Well, it's a mostly nonsensical mess with few laughs, and it buries him under bizarre robot prosthetics. As a performer, Kaufman was known for his showmanship. Heartbeeps robs him of all that, instead turning him into a caricature of his own caricature. Val, the android he plays, is just a watered down Latka Graves from Taxi. Hence why this unfunny mishmash of a film bombed at the box office. On a budget of $12 million, it grossed barely over $2 million, scuttling future plans for its star. Kaufman and his co-stars deserved so much better. Now, sit back, rewire your palette with a Dr. Robot Blackberry Lemon Sour from Monday Night Brewing, and refrain from telling low power jokes! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are just three dim-witted robots looking for love! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Meet a modern nuclear family unlike any other! (00:00) Lingering Questions – The Double Turn Podcast wrestles a camel (well, technically a bear), and then we discuss how a film as miserable as Heartbeeps could happen. And, we also declare it the Shit Movie Champion. (35:49) The "Request Denied" Trivia Challenge – Chumpzilla challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (43:42) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We finish Hops and WTF Flops with bastardized E.T., aka Mac and Me! Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is the sad end to a beloved series. Well, III was also terrible, but there is something uniquely depressing about Superman IV. Perhaps it's the fact that they coaxed Christopher Reeve into returning by agreeing to center the film on the threat of nuclear escalation; and then as they shot the movie, budget cuts kneecapped the project faster than a speeding bullet. Superman IV was clearly hindered by Cannon's frugal ways, but it's a bizarre and poorly written film, as well. The movie's central antagonist Nuclear Man has the look of a compelling villain, but his voice was dubbed with Gene Hackman's. A move that truly put the f%*$ in WTF. Couple that with shoddy special effects, a nonsensical love triangle, and a B-plot seemingly taken from an never produced episode of the George Reeves show and you've got one of the more notorious superhero movies ever made. Hence, why it bombed with critics and at the box office. Superman IV grossed just $36.7 million worldwide, further worsening the financial woes of Cannon Films. And it's 10% on Rotten Tomatoes is a far cry from even that of III (29%). Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Hackman all deserved so much better, lest we forget Jackie Cooper and Mark McClure. Now, sit back, go nuclear with a Sol Mexican Lager, and broker world peace through a tender hearted letter! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are fist-fighting some whacko with press-on nails and feathered hair on the Moon! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Nuclear Power. In the best hands, it is dangerous. In the hands of Lex Luthor, it is pure evil. This is Superman's greatest battle. And it is for all of us! (00:00) Lingering Questions – The Double Turn Podcast throws Nuclear Man over the top rope, and then we discuss what, if anything, worked about Superman IV. (34:00) The "Lex's Secret Recipe" Trivia Challenge – I challenge the field to trivia about the movie. This week Sam brings the romance with the 1981 robot rom-com Heartbeeps. Val (Andy Kaufman) and Aqua (Bernadette Peters) are two companion model robots currently being stored in a factory for repairs. We'll leave it as an exercise to the listener to determine what the purpose of a "companion" robot is. However, after talking for a little while Val convinces Aqua and a hack-comedian robot that they all should leave the factory to go look at some trees. Apparently, this factory has no security, so Val jacks a van and they quickly crash into some woods, since he was programmed to drive, but seemingly not very well. Once they're discovered missing, two factory workers are sent out to recover them, but then also an automated tank called the Crimebuster also goes rogue and breaks out of the factory to chase the fugitive robots. No one in the factory seems to notice this latest robot escape, which is just an incredible indictment of this factory's operating procedures. Meanwhile, Val and Aqua have built themselves a robot child in the woods, primarily so it could be used as a pack-mule to haul around spare parts in a trailer strapped to it. Shortly thereafter, the troupe of robots finds a cave, and after a convenient helicopter scares away a bear, they hunker down. While alone, Val and Aqua find a new use for their pleasure centers (did we not mention that the robots seemed to be trained using pleasure to reinforce desired behavior? Because they are, and it's bonkers). However, the factory workers and Crimebuster robot are both separately hunting the fugitive robots, who are now intent on maintaining their freedom. The big question remains: Will our robot lovers succeed in escaping, or will they be returned to servitude? While the surprise reveal of a pet raccoon in a junkyard seems to sever Sam's tenuous grasp on reality, the stuff going on behind the scenes is equally insane as this movie tapped top talent like John Williams and Stan Winston for its production. So see what happens when you take a bunch of amazing talents and put them into the most insane movie possible, and see if two robots can actually fall in love (no, no they can't).

"Finding coins and learning to read" zit op 64:15 terwijl hier "The Dinner" afgespeeld moest worden. Onze excuses! This week we discuss the almost completely forgotten 1981 A.I. Sci-Fi/fantasy film Heartbeeps. Thank you for listening!
That 1981 film Heartbeeps asks the question, what would robots do on a fun adventure? Andy Kaufman and Bernadette Peters dressed up in horrifying robot costumes to answer that question! This movie doesn't have much of a plot, but it did only make 2 million somehow at the box office. This movie is bizarre. I […]
Every Which Way but Loose).
Since there are no new films at the theater, we circle back around to another 0% Project. This time around we take on the 1981 film HEARTBEEPS Starring Andy Kaufman and Bernadette Peters. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Happy New Year! We pulled Christopher Guest's name and since we've already watched Almost Heroes and Heartbeeps, we're going back to an actual episode of Saturday Night Live, this one is from Season 10 and it's hosted by Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. to promote the upcoming first WrestleMania. It's a weird episode that George has a fun time with while Ben hates. We get Billy Crystal in blackface, sentimental prison rape, a promotion for Camp Crystal Lake, some guy named Steve Landesberg, a cameo from Rowdy Roddy Piper, Martin Short, and much more. Enjoy!Download Here
We're closing out the first year of "The Baton" with another of John Williams' lesser-known works. "Heartbeeps" was a massive flop at the box office, but has some charms that were greatly helped by John Williams' music. The Maestro experimented with heavy use of synthesizers and keyboards, and also used a much smaller orchestra compared to his previous two films. The result is a love theme that has some tenderness when played on strings, or on keyboards. There's also a theme for the "villain," a robot named Crimebuster which is the big downfall of the film. Williams does write an interesting theme for Crimebuster, and host Jeff Commings wonders if this is what Williams might have written for Darth Vader if the Star Wars series was a comedy.

My friends! Welcome to the eleventh episode of You’re Gonna Love This… or Not…! For those who have just joined us, this podcast features Matt, who loves watching bad movies in his basement, and Josh, who loves giving Matt grief for his love of bad movies. Every month, Matt is going to bring Josh down to his Subterranean Fun Pit (aka, his basement) and show him one of his favorite bad movies, hoping to find one Josh loves, or at least likes a little bit. On occasion, they bring in guests. This month, Matt and Josh are hijacked by their editor, Tony Troxell of Geeking in Indiana, to pay them back for almost a year of listening to them watch bad movies, then complain about them. So, to get them back, Tony sits them down to watch a movie he's loved since he was a kid, his own favorite "bad" movie, Heartbeeps. What will Matt and Josh think of this? Will it be the worst movie they've seen yet, or will it be on par with Mazes & Monsters? Let's find out! NOTE: You’re Gonna Love This… or Not… contains harsh language, and reviews R-rated films, so it is not suitable for younger listeners. Worse, it contains spoilers.
