I interview Tim Williams, composer of the soundtrack for the movie Pearl. (Oct 11, 2022) Here's the press release from his publicist: (September 15, 2022 – Los Angeles, CA) – Today, A24 Music released the single “Pearl Main Titles” from the Pearl Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with music by Tyler Bates & Timothy Williams, listen here. The full 19-track album will be available September 23 on major digital platforms. With only six weeks to assemble a 68-person orchestra, Bates brought in frequent collaborator Timothy Williams, who worked with the composer on Guardians of the Galaxy, to help him audition musicians, build the orchestra, rehearse over four days in Nashville, and record the score. “In the style of mid-century melodramas,” says West, “Tyler Bates fashioned a sweeping, shrieking, strings-based score that lets the viewer know from the opening credits that Pearl will not be a subdued or quiet film. I said to him, ‘let's do a romantic, melodramatic, old-school score for this movie.'” He continues, “This wasn't the first time I've used live instruments on a movie—but it was the first time I had a full orchestra. It was awesome. Tyler and Tim really hit it out of the park. The score is very much one of the film's central characters, and that was important." “Ti expressed the musical approach to this film with us before filming,” says Bates & Williams. “We knew that the music would be based in an "Old Hollywood" approach, which stylistically is something we both love to do. This was a rare opportunity to write a lyrical score where the main theme permeates the music throughout the myriad emotional and psychological dynamics from beginning to end.” ABOUT TIM Timothy Williams is a multi-award-winning composer best known for his work on Pearl, Finding You, Brightburn, and Get Out! Williams' films includes A24's Pearl, co-scored with Tyler Bates, Gravitas' The Swearing Jar, Roadside Attractions' Finding You, Screen Gems' Brightburn, directed by David Yarovesky, We Summon The Darkness, directed by Marc Meyers, which won best score award at ScreamfestLA; Wild Horses, directed by Robert Duvall; I.T., directed by John Moore, and Red Sky, for which Tim Williams was nominated Best Composer by Motion Picture Sound Editors and best score at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. Williams has written additional music for the Academy Award® and Golden Globe® winner Get Out!, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Hobbs and Shaw, Deadpool 2, 300, Watchmen, Super, Sucker Punch, and The Spy Who Dumped Me. Television work includes co-scoring AMC/Shudder Creepshow with Tyler Bates, Disney Junior's Piney, the Fox pilot Richard Lovely, and additional music on Fox's The Exorcist (S2), ABC's Missing and Comedy Network's Sym-Bionic Titan. A graduate of the National Film and Television School, Williams has received two Motion Picture SE Golden Reel Award nominations (Red Sky), four Thea Award wins, 10 ASCAP Plus Awards and won best score at the 24FPS Festival (Butterfly Circus), best score at ScreamfestLA 2019 (We Summon The Darkness) and best soundtrack nomination at the HMMA Awards (Red Sky). Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. COLIN STETSON Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, spent a decade in San Francisco and Brooklyn honing his formidable talents as a horn player, eventually settling in Montreal in 2007. Over the years he has worked extensively, live and in studio, with a wide range of bands and musicians including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Hamid Drake, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, Fink, and David Gilmore. Meanwhile he has developed an utterly unique voice as a soloist, principally on saxophones and clarinets, his intense technical prowess matched by his exhilarating and emotionally gripping skills as a songwriter. Stetson's astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Stemming from that approach and aesthetic, he has been contributing regularly to the world of film, TV, and game scoring over the past decade with such titles as Hereditary (2018), The First (2018), Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), Color Out of Space (2019), Barkskins (2020), Mayday (2021), Among The Stars (2021), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), The Menu (2022), and Uzumaki (2023). “Stay the course.” PWRP is (spiritually) heading back to the east coast as Tyler sits down with Director, Producer, and Screenwriter; Marc Meyers. Having found his knack for writing while studying abroad in the U.K., Marc would produce his first short film while simultaneously writing ads and waiting tables after returning to New York. As the years went on, he would dive into the world of independent film and playwriting. His feature adaptation of My Friend Dahmer paved the way for his continued success as a Director of films such as American Capital, We Summon The Darkness, and All My Life. Welcome to Volume 666, chapter 21 of, the Necrocasticon, where we blend horror and heavy metal for your pleasure, and ours. This week we’ve got a Monkey’s Paw. Now, I’m not talking about some sick sex toy Skip might want to try, I’m talking about the short film from Zack Ogle and Aaron Pagniano. Tom and the guys bullshit with them and review the film. Plus Walt’s smoking some Toehider and Stryper this week, and Mr. Scott Reacts to We Summon The Darkness and The Babysitter, Killer Queen.
This week we cover We Summon The Darkness, a film that uses the satanic panic of the 80's as backdrop for slasher film. Shad actually came from a town that was featured on a Geraldo Rivera special about Satanism back in the 80's. So this film was a trip down memory lane for him. We watched 1BR & We Summon The Darkness - 2 Netflix horror movies about Cults! Hooray!
Johnny Knoxville gets high-billing and low scene time in this disappointing attempt of a teen horror comedy titled We Summon The Darkness. Due the subject matter of cults and rituals, Scott and Terry's Top 5 reflect this genre.
This week's film is the 1973 multiple-Oscar-winning classic THE STING. After (certainly not mixed!) initial reviews, we talk about how this film is more about a con not a heist, it's links to more modern films like John Wick, and the use of obvious artificiality on screen. Next Time The next in our heist mini-season is 1981's THIEF. Recent Media HAMILTON (2015): Lin-Manuel Miranda, Philippa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr. WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS (2019): Mark Meyers, Alexandra Daddario, Keean Johnson VFW (2019): Joe Begos, Stephen Lang, William Sadler Recommendations CLUE (1985): Jonathan Lynn, Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry SLAP SHOT (1977): George Roy Hill, Paul Newman, Strother Martin BLUE HAWAII (1961): Norman Taurog, Elvis Presley, Joan Blackman CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014): Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Chris Evans JAWS (1975): Steven Spielberg, Roy Sheider, Robert Shaw Footnotes Firstly, this gets to the root of exactly why I (Sam) love this film: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/28/movies/the-sting-robert-redford-paul-newman.html. On the subject of screen artificiality, this article is really good: https://sites.lafayette.edu/fams202-sp15/2015/01/30/artificiality-of-cinema-vs-reality-of-production/. This is more about a film that we discuss as being related to this one, our namesake; but it is a really interesting piece: https://www.altaonline.com/the-pledge-the-turn-the-prestige/. When thinking about THE STING, the last line is especially pertinent: ‘How can you be certain you saw an illusion?' This definitely isn't a Brechtian film, as Rob says, but these films are: https://www.tasteofcinema.com/2015/the-15-best-movies-influenced-by-bertolt-brechts-theater-techniques. Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. In this episode we’re talking about 1972’s The Legend Of Boggy Creek and 2004’s Incident At Loch Ness. First and foremost, we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for that support. Thanks! We start by talking about what we’ve done involving horror recently. We talk about the new HBO series Lovecraft Country, and Justin talks about She Dies Tomorrow, We Summon The Darkness, Random Acts Of Violence, and Sputnik. Up first is The Legend Of Boggy Creek. We both agree that the poster is somewhat iconic and arguably the best thing about the film. We largely disliked the film, and Liam talks about how it resembles a Disney nature film we used to watch in elementary school back in the ‘80s. Justin gives a little bit of a background on the phenomenon of the Fouke Monster, the creature alleged to exist in the film. Liam talks about how dreary the film is and how it looks like it takes place in a far different time period that it’s supposed to. Justin talks about how it’s painfully obvious the whole thing revolves around a hoax. The entire film feels performative and boring, and even the Sasquatch attacks feel flat and uninteresting. The ADR and dubbing are horrible, and the film presents an uneven tone. We talk about the films presence in the DNA of modern found footage films, as well as kicking off the trend of Bigfoot themed horror films. Up next is Incident At Loch Ness. The film feels a little too “winking and nodding” at the camera over the presence of Werner Herzog; Liam describes it as “loving the smell of its own shit”. We talk about Herzog’s self-awareness and how he is willing to lampoon himself. We touch upon the film would make a great episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and how the filmmakers seem obsessed with showing off how much they know about Herzog’s myth. Justin yells about how the cryptozoologist in the film uses horrible logic and how such logic is a trademark of QAnon bullshit. Despite the films flaws it’s still entertaining. Liam brings up that the film couldn’t decide how “in on the joke” it wanted to be. Thank you for listening. Thank you to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. It's a film smorgasbord as our viewing habits lately have been all over the place! From 60's art deco, to 70's thrillers and even Hilter's brain(?!?).This time out we both report on the third entries in the DEATH RACE and BEST OF THE BEST series, Josh talks about a 70's crime effort starring the great Yaphet Kotto, we get "extreme" with an early Josh Brolin flick, Lucio Fulci makes a giallo, Ray Milland gets X-ray vision, there's some ineffectual zombies, WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS and so much more! Thanks for listening! Cults have been portrayed many times in horror films as the final antagonist. These movies include the comedic SATANIC PANIC (2019) or darker films such as 1BR (2020) or THE INVITATION (2015). And many do follow similar themes and plot developments. Some change it up a bit such as THE SACREMENT (2013) using found footage, and the new horror film WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS (2020) actually even changes up the protagonists. It's 1988, and three girls head to a heavy metal concert. When they arrive in the parking lot, they meet up with three boys who seem to want to “party” with them after the show. Unfortunately, a string of kidnappings by Satanists have occurred around the area. Heading back to one of their houses, what was supposed to be a fun extended evening turns out to be a horrific nightmare. Director Marc Meyers is known for the docu-drama MY FRIEND DAHMER (2017). WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS, his latest, stars Alexandra Daddario, Logan Miller, and even the great Taylor Swift's brother, Austin Swift. In a star making performance, Maddie Hasson steals the film. Dark Discussions takes a look at this well received horror movie and gives their thoughts.

In this all-horror episode, Mike and Rich take a look at REBORN, starring Barbara Crampton and Michael Pare, THE FINAL WISH, starring Lyn Shaye and WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS starring Johnny Knoxville! With that last one I picked the most deliberately ambiguous trailer I could, and we recommend watching the film before learning too much about the plot! Keeping with our horror theme we have MJ as our Short Shot, a psycho thriller set in London. Check it out and let us know if you agree with our review! Finally in our DTV Throwback, I get Rich to watch one of my favourite films of recent years, JUGFACE, aka THE PIT, which you can find on Amazon Prime.

Well, here it is. It may have taken us two weeks, cost us our sanity, tested our friendship, and killed three of Jorge's cousins, but damnit, we have a new episode! Things have been a little shaky for everyone the last few weeks and here at the Who Goes There Podcast is no exception. We lost three episodes to the podcasting gods after having to record remotely for the first time in seven years. That, in conjunction with the release calendar looking pretty slim we jumped at the chance to review a NEW horror movie! This week we bring you 2020's We Summon The Darkness, a movie about satanists, or not. (Review at 25:35) I would like to take a second to thank and acknowledge my co-hosts for all of their hard work and patience. Despite living through his own private nightmare, Jorge has produced an episode that sounds as though we are all in the same room. Rhett is being a positive, optimistic driving force, and I now get really high through the whole episode and basically serve no purpose. Hooray teamwork! Colonel, take it from the beginning. Assume we know nothing... which is understating the matter. It's the Who Goes There Podcast episode 256!
