Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is Toto, by A.J. Hackwith, which is a look at the Wizard of Oz story from the perspective of Toto the dog. He tells us, "I was mostly a Good Dog until they sold me out to animal control, okay?" which sounds like a take we'd like to hear.Terri's random recommendation this week is a filmed version of a stage production of Waitress, starring Sara Bareilles and streaming on Max. We've talked about the show and the movie before, and Terri found this an enjoyable way to make use of her Max subscription. Mentioned: A song from the show, "She Used to Be Mine," performed by Jeremy Jordan, Jessie Mueller, and the show's creator, Sara Bareilles. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2021 on one-star reviews of parenting experiences. Mentioned: "7 Surprisingly Busy Days in the Life of an Experimental Theater Maker" at the New York Times (gift link).Next week's lineup: Lost S2 E11, "The Hunting Party," on Tuesday, March 4A Man on the Inside S1 E6, "Our Man in Sacramento," on Wednesday, March 5Weekly roundup on Thursday, March 6Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Shoot us a Text.Happy Super Bowl parade day, Eagles fans! Happy Valentine's Day to the rest of you! Today, we're breaking down how Chinese OEMs are able to build lower cost vehicles with more speed than traditional OEMs. Plus, we look at Toyota's plans for more inventory in 2025 and a history of Valentine's Day candy.Show Notes with links:A teardown analysis by Caresoft Global Technologies reveals that Chinese automakers are rapidly surpassing the Detroit 3 in cost efficiency, speed, and innovation. While legacy automakers struggle with outdated manufacturing methods, Chinese brands are cutting costs, streamlining production, and expanding aggressively into global markets.Detroit automakers use 12 rare-earth magnets and steel brackets to secure headliners, while Chinese automakers achieve the same result with inexpensive adhesive strips; similarly, Detroit 3 EVs rely on costly aluminum braces, whereas Chinese EVs use lighter, more affordable plastic or thin metal brackets.Meetings with Chinese automakers take one week compared to two months with German OEMs and nine months for a purchase order from a legacy automaker. At a Caresoft presentation in China, 700 employees showed up on a Saturday—a level of commitment rarely seen in the U.S.Toyota is pushing for increased production and sales in 2025 after a strong 2024, despite supply chain hurdles and stop-sales. The company saw record accessory sales, nearly record parts sales, and a 3% increase in U.S. light-vehicle sales, totaling 1.99 million units.Toyota built over 2 million vehicles in North America in 2024 and plans to increase output in 2025 to improve inventory levels.Toyota dealers have adapted to a lean inventory, high-throughput model, preselling vehicles and managing allocations efficiently.Hybrids and plug-in hybrids made up 43% of U.S. sales in 2024, up from 29% in 2023. Toyota expects 50%+ in 2025, rising to 60-70% long-term as its North Carolina battery plant boosts hybrid production. After weather disruptions at the NADA Show in January, Toyota executives and retailers met virtually this month, where brand head Dave Christ emphasized the company's focus for the year: “Our message [for 2025] is very simple: It's build more and sell more.”Valentine's Day remains a battle between flowers and candy, with 56% of celebrants purchasing candy and 40% buying flowers in 2024. Despite candy's popularity, flower sales ($2.9B) edged out candy sales ($2.5B). Over the years, candy brands have introduced creative and sometimes bizarre Valentine's treats. Here are some key moments in Valentine's Candy History:1868: Cadbury debuts the first heart-shaped candy box.1902: Necco produces its first conversation hearts with sayings like “Be Mine.”2019: Smarties Candy Co adds the sayings “Swipe Right,” “Text Me,” and “YOLO” to their conversation hearts2024: Protein-packed “Meathearts” beef jerky is introduced. Printed sayings include “Meat Me” and “Beef MineHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

They begin with details about the "Coffee and Conversations" event, a monthly gathering featuring Kelli Weaver from the Virginia Tourism Corporation on February 7, 2025 from 9am - 10am. Kelli will discuss local tourism and grant opportunities. Janet highlights the relevance of this topic, especially with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. They elaborate on the benefits provided by the Virginia Tourism Corporation, such as marketing grants and the ability to list business events on their website. Niki then talks about an open house event for Dance and Arts Virginia, which includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a candy bar for attendees. Next, the conversation shifts to "Business After Hours," a networking opportunity held on the fourth Tuesday of each month; this month's event will be hosted at Stone Branch Center for the Arts and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Additionally, Janet and Niki discuss the Wine and Craft Festival in May, announcing a limited-time discount on tickets between February 5 and February 19 by using the code "Be Mine." They emphasize the importance of supporting local businesses not only for Valentine's Day but throughout the year, urging listeners to shop locally. The conversation includes personal anecdotes about Valentine's Day and a discussion about the winter weather's impact on their plans. Janet wraps up the session by reminding listeners to visit the Chamber's website: https://www.frontroyalchamber.com/ and Facebook page for event details.

This season on my podcast, Baring It All with Call Me Adam, I am highlighting My Entertainment Idols.Today, I am going back in time and Behind-The-Curtain to bring you this blast from the past, my 2019 interview with Olivia Newton-John, 4-time Grammy award winner and Sandy from the mega hit movie musical Grease. This was my third, and what turned out to be my final time interviewing Olivia. I was given 10 minutes to conduct a telephone interview with her. Now, here's a little Behind-The-Curtain Story….When this interview took place, I did not have a podcast, so I had to transcribe the interview into print format. Now I do have a podcast, and I am so excited to share with you my original phone conversation with the one, the only Olivia Newton-John.At the time of this interview, Olivia's autobiography, Don't Stop Believin' was recently released, which is what brought us back together. In this interview, Olivia is Baring It All with Call Me Adam about:How she keeps her positive outlookWhat she learned about herself from writing her autobiographyHow she has adapted to the changes in the music industryWhat she still hopes to achieveSo much moreIf you want to read the interview, and see some photos of Olivia, you can do that here!Special Thanks:Michael Caprio, Caprio Media DesignTheme Song by Bobby CroninPodcast Logo by Liam O'DonnellEdited by Adam RothenbergConnect with Me:Website: www.callmeadam.comFacebook: @CallMeAdamNYCInstagram: @CallMeAdamNYCMore on Olivia Newton-John:Olivia Newton-John's appeal seems to be timeless. With a career spanning more than five decades she is still a vibrant, creative individual adored by fans around the globe. Born in Cambridge, England in 1948, the youngest child of Professor Brin Newton-John and Irene, daughter of Nobel Prize winning physicist, Max Born, Olivia moved to Melbourne, Australia with her family when she was five. Her first big break was winning a talent contest on the popular TV show, Sing, Sing, Sing, which earned Olivia a trip to London. By the age of fifteen she had formed an all-girl group called Sol 4 and, in 1963, Olivia was appearing on local daytime TV shows and weekly pop music programs in Australia. When she eventually took her prize-winning trip to London, she teamed up with her friend from Melbourne, Pat Carroll (now Pat Farrar), to create a double act, “Pat & Olivia,” and the duo toured army bases and clubs throughout the UK and Europe. Olivia cut her first single for Decca Records in 1966, a version of Jackie DeShannon's "Till You Say You'll Be Mine,” and in 1971, she recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's "If Not For You," co-produced by Bruce Welch and fellow Aussie and friend, John Farrar, whom she continues to collaborate with today.Olivia's U.S. album debut, Let Me Be There, produced her first top ten single of the same name, with Olivia being honored by the Academy Of Country Music as “Most Promising Female Vocalist” and a Grammy Award as “Best Country Vocalist.” This proved to be only the beginning of a very exciting career. With more than 100 million albums sold, Olivia's successes include...

Hi. Hi. Omg. we've finally posted an episode on a Tuesday in 2024 (I mean...they've all been posted on Tuesday...). ANYWAY. Happy Valentine's Day! To celebrate all of you in love, we're sorting Heartstopper, a cute wholesome little show about teenagers in love that was straight gooey fluff. We're sorting the whole gang (that's Nick, Charlie, Elle, Tao and Isaac for those of you who haven't kept up) and mostly this whole episode is as wholesome as the show itself. Mostly. Apologies to comics Tao, we hear we may have liked you better. BUT that didn't stop us from discussing these kids' dramas and relationships just in time for a commercialized holiday all about buying people you like chocolate. Did you know Valentine was a Saint that chased all of the snakes out of Ireland? And now we celebrate him with heart-shaped chalk discussed as candy. BE MINE and all that. This has gotten way off topic. We really enjoyed Heartstopper, thanks to all the Destiel girlies who turned us onto it.

Valentine's Day is upon us, and as I have been working on my own heart this year, it's a perfect time of year, with National Heart Month and Valentine's Day, to share with you.We are created in His image, and God is love.  Life will throw us curveballs, our hearts can grow weeds and choke out the intended beauty He Created for us.  He desires for our hearts to be aligned with His.  And if you have ever been in love or in love, then you know that butterfly feeling you get in your heart when you fall in love and the other person says”  Be Mine Let's dive in to renew our hearts, and when He moves within our hearts, we can breathe easier, our hearts, minds, and souls feel peaceful, and we can echo the words of love in all that we do.  When our hearts get weary and we are mentally and physically exhausted, our hearts reflect that in our words, actions, thoughts, and the way we love those around us.

Julia writes emotionally rich stories about family, love, and the passion of chasing and achieving one's goals. Her books reflect the flavor and rhythm of Latino communities in the U.S.. Julia grew up in California, the daughter of Argentine parents, who taught her to value her roots and to be proud of her Latina heritage, as well as to be grateful for the life they built in America.  The beauty of America is that both cultures could be interwoven together, and Julia illustrates this in her novels. To her, being Latina is not separate from being American; her immigrant story is part of the great history of this country.

The Times's staff book critics — Dwight Garner, Jennifer Szalai and Alexandra Jacobs — do a lot of reading over the course of any given year, but not everything they read stays with them equally. On this week's podcast, Gilbert Cruz chats with the critics about the books that did: the novels and story collections and works of nonfiction that made an impression in 2023 and defined their year in reading, including one that Garner says caught him by surprise.“Eleanor Catton's ‘Birnam Wood' is in some ways my novel of the year,” Garner says. “And it's not really my kind of book. This is going to sound stupid or snobby, but I'm not the biggest plot reader. I'm just not. I like sort of thorny, funny, earthy fiction, and if there's no plot I'm fine with that. But this has a plot like a dream. It just takes right off. And she's such a funny, generous writer that I was just happy from the first time I picked it up.”Here are the books discussed on this week's episode:“Be Mine,” by Richard Ford“Onlookers,” by Ann Beattie“I Am Homeless if This Ia Not My Home,” by Lorrie Moore“People Collide,” by Isle McElroy“Birnam Wood,” by Eleanor Catton“Biography of X,” by Catherine Lacey“Madonna: A Rebel Life,” by Mary Gabriel“The Sullivanians: Sex, Psychotherapy, and the Wild Life of an American Commune,” by Alexander Stille“The Best Minds: A Story of Friendship, Madness, and the Tragedy of Good Intentions,” by Jonathan Rosen“Bottoms Up and the Devil Laughs: A Journey Through the Deep State,” by Kerry Howley“The Country of the Blind: A Memoir at the End of Sight,” by Andrew Leland“Fatherland: A Memoir of War, Conscience, and Family Secrets,” by Burkhard Bilger“King: A Life,” Jonathan Eig“Larry McMurtry: A Life,” Tracy Daugherty“Biography of a Phantom: A Robert Johnson Blues Odyssey,” by Robert “Mack” McCormick“Roald Dahl, Teller of the Unexpected: A Biography,” by Matthew Dennison“The Rigor of Angels: Borges, Heisenberg, Kant, and the Ultimate Nature of Reality,” by William Egginton“Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World,” by Naomi Klein“The Notebooks and Diaries of Edmund Wilson”“Zero at the Bone: Fifty Entries Against Despair,” by Christian Wiman“Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals,” by Oliver BurkemanWe would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. Indeed, it's our 50th episode, which is a wicked big deal, and Sam and Hannah are high on the successful Andre Dubus III event they have just completed, and so you get a recaap of that and some behind-the-scenes stuff (he is very charming; throws out Ezra Pound quotes off the top of his head), but no worries, we quickly move into talk of similar dude-lit writer Richard Ford's "Be Mine," the third Frank Bascombe book. It touches off a discussion of the "shitty dad" trope and the relative rarity of father-son stories in contemporary lit. Just because you're privileged doesn't mean bad things don't happen to you and you don't deserve empathy (but not Jann Wenner; that guy deserves ridicule). But it's not all quite that serious — Hannah just read "Business or Pleasure," which is about just what you think it is (a ghostwriter hooks up with her boss and teaches him how to have sex; that's what you thought, right?). Just make sure you keep the windows rolled up for the audiobook. And "North Woods," by Daniel Mason, is seriously good, but way too weird to be "serious." Sam praises it as "like a David Mitchel novel." Finally, we wrap with the new "Square of Sevens," the plot of which reminds Sam of Zadie Smith's new novel (but with a lot of fortune telling), and a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT.
