Today, April 30, marks the 15th anniversary of Gerry Ryan's untimely death aged 53. That Gerry-shaped hole has never quite been filled at RTÉ. At his best, the Dubliner was a broadcaster of the first rank, one who could delight, entertain, inform, infuriate and challenge the listener – often over the course of a single show. But in the end, the life of Gerry Ryan was tragically cut short on his sudden death, which was as hotly debated as any “Ryan Line” phone-in special. Host; Fionnán Sheahan, Guests; John Meagher and Niamh Horan Copy: Today, April 30, marks the 15th anniversary of Gerry Ryan's untimely death aged 53. That Gerry-shaped hole has never quite been filled at RTÉ. At his best, the Dubliner was a broadcaster of the first rank, one who could delight, entertain, inform, infuriate and challenge the listener – often over the course of a single show. He was an undeniable force of nature in the world of Irish broadcasting. Controversy also didn't really faze the man, in fact, he made his career off the back of it. His voracious appetite for life, and indeed becoming a major part of the lives of his audience, was quintessential Gerry Ryan, as was his signature rambunctious approach to the microphone. Love or loathe the man, you had an opinion about him. But in the end, the life of Gerry Ryan was tragically cut short, with his sudden death as hotly debated as any “Ryan Line” phone-in special. Today on the Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Mediahuis Ireland journalists John Meagher and Niamh Horan, to reflect on the days of a true broadcasting legend, his legacy on the Irish airwaves and to remember the days when the Ryan Line was open. JOHN MEAGHER was recently featured in ROLLING STONE who said he was "Ireland's next great comedian." The Irish Times said “it's like watching a young Irish Billy Connolly” he won an award at last year's Edinburgh Festival and he's been a finalist at the greatest Best Act competitions including ones at The Hackney Empire, The Leicester Mercury's, the BBC AND The Leicester Square Theatre. He's also turned his hand to investigative journalism and has an explosive documentary coming out on BBC Radio 4 in April called The Devil's Own which is going to shock the world. I was lucky enough to get an inside scoop and I can't believe what he's uncovered. It's ostensibly about a crazy underground devil-worshipping cult called the White Hoods but what he uncovers is stranger than any fiction you can imagine and if it wasn't going out on the BBC I wouldn't even believe it. John Meagher returns to the show to talk about the latest list he's compiled for the Irish Independent: The best Irish songs of all time — ranked: the definitive top 50. He talks about the work involved in putting it together, why there are three songs by Sinéad O'Connor in the top five, but no U2 in the top 10, why the Republic of Ireland team are in there with 'Put 'Em Under Pressure' but not Horslips, and why the Undertones' Teenage Kicks was the obvious polltopper, along with some other talking points about the list. John asked 50 people, including myself, to send in our top 10 and he put it all together - there's a lot of work involved, and no matter your anger or thoughts about the list, fair play to John for the work put into it. If you were to pick the best Irish song, what would it be? The Irish Independent invited 50 people from across the music industry in Ireland to nominate their top 50 songs in order of preference. From there, they applied a ranking system to come up with the top tracks. Joining Seán to review the order is John Meagher, the paper's music journalist who compiled the list.

He talks through how it was compiled - more than 50 judges, a weighted voting system - some themes that emerge from the list, such as a dearth of Choice Prize winners, three U2 albums and no album released this century in the top 10, and the surprises and omissions evident throughout. Not only is she the founder and CEO of Avtrain (Europe's leading drone Pilot and Operator training and certification body) but she travelled the world working in every aspect of the flying industry. From engineer to pilot, compliance and management, Julie's life took a twist one day when a nephew put a drone controller in her hands at Christmas. The rest as they say history. Jarlath asks the former barrister about the new frontier of drone use and how it is expected to feature in the 2027 Ryder Cup. Can the public's preconceived ideas of autonomous flight be overcome? Julie Garland knows every angle of this remarkable business and machinery. A new poll reveals that voting Americans are losing confidence in institutions such as the Supreme Court, Democrats have their attempt to enshrine abortion rights in federal law blocked and John Eastman's emails paint a colourful picture of his attempt to undermine the 2020 election result. It's a packed slate of news from the States in this week's Irishman in America and Marion pulls no punches. The Starbucks Union situation and a shocking new report about the systematic killing of Native American children in government run schools get discussed in the extended cut on Patreon. Tony Cascarino is back to finish what Jarlath began in 2013. A conversation reflecting on life, football post Covid, the loss and impact of Jack Charlton, his tumultuous relationship with Roy Keane and lots more. Cas devoted his life to football and Ireland but things took a turn after he wrote an autobiography with friend of the show Paul Kimmage. Together Jarlath and Tony finally set the record straight. A leak is a very rare thing when it comes to the Supreme Court but it has been a week of rare things in America. One time Trump critic, JD Vance stormed to victory in Ohio with the help of Peter Thiel's chequebook and an admission that he says stupid things in public. While the whole country remained glued to a celebrity car crash trial like no other, Democrats are counting on their base getting so angry about the possible overturning of abortion laws that they will get to the polls in November. Marion is not so sure. Can feelings of that kind can be sustained and harnessed for that long in a world of scrolling outrage that changes week to week? Finally Jarlath asks Marion why the world can't seem to look away from Amber Heard and Johnny Depp publicly mutilating each other in a Virginia Courthouse. Nicola Tallant is the award winning Irish crime journalist, writer and podcast behind books such as Clash Of The Clans, Flesh & Blood and The Witness which told the tragic story Joey “The Lips” O'Callaghan. She has made it her life's work to report on Ireland's most violent criminals, drug gangs and the wider issues of criminality. When you read her work and listen to her podcasts it's not hard to see why she is the three time (and current) holder of the Irish Crime Journalist of the Year title. In this conversation I had the chance to ask about current state of Ireland and its drug epidemic, her introduction to the crime journalism and why she is never scared. In the extended cut (Patreon) we have the space and time to talk about the newer crime bosses such as Mr Flashy and what makes them different, verifiable truth and her instinct when looking a source in the eyes, and much more. From the Ukraine to Virginia, the battle over which version of the truth is more correct has raged this week while Elon Musk learns why even he doesn't want absolute free speech. I interrupt Marion's well earned holiday in Ireland to get her take on what just happened with Twitter, that interview with Piers Morgan, the US policy change in Ukraine, history making droughts in California and the Johnny Depp she used to know. Whether he was representing Robert DeNiro or the estate of Andy Warhol, working homicide in New York City or defending his friends, Eddie Hayes won respect wherever he went. In this deep dive conversation he talks to me about the route he took from being a street fighting kid struggling to survive his abusive father to fighting the biggest cases for the biggest clients imaginable. He reveals why the art business was far dirtier than the mafia, explains why he feels no remorse for “hurting people” along the way, his dealings with Trump, the one time Ghislaine Maxwell made a pass at his wife, the sting he created to fix a problem for DeNiro and much much more. I couldn't have enjoyed this conversation more. Huge thanks to our mutual friend Marion McKeone for setting this conversation up for me. I sat down with Marion McKeone for our usual Friday catch up on all things America and one story jumped to the top of our list. The crash of Netflix's stock this weekend has been epic. Some are saying that the worst is yet to come as subscribers leave the platform behind. Marion explains what is behind the shift and tells me if there is any saving the giant or will Apple, HBO, Prime & Hulu swallow it whole. Ron DeSantis is looking more and more like the Republican candidate for 2024 no matter what the Orange Lad thinks. Is his latest publicity stunt as the anti-woke guru enough to win Trump's voters in Florida? We also get Marion's recommendation for what's good this weekend. This week, one of Ireland's finest and most loved comics, Neil Delamare, joins Jarlath for a rare and insightful conversation about his life and career. Neil delves into his comedic roots and where he first discovered his passion for comedy as well as speaking openly about his work ethic and the challenges of working within the modern cancel culture. From his reflections on his experiences of RTÉ's much loved series The Panel which came to an abrupt end to his insights into how he makes his audience members as comfortable as possible during his interactions with them and much more, this is a fascinating conversation with one of Ireland's funniest men. Is Elon Musk showing off or does he genuinely intend to buy Twitter? Marion McKeone (Sunday Business Post US Correspondent) explains who the man behind Tesla really is and why this might just be a stunt. Later in the episode Jarlath asks Marion about President Biden's difficult week and another choice of words that left a lot of world leaders cold. The Orange Lad needs new material because the crowds are staying away and shouting “we've heard it”. Is there a new hot political standup waiting in the wings? Marion has the answer on this and what the latest changes to abortion law in some states means. Finally Jar and Marion look at the weirdest celebrity court case of the week. If we were never taught about sex, sexuality and relationships in the modern world how can we hope to talk to our young people about it? Richie Sadlier's new book “Let's Talk” is aimed at helping both parents and youngsters alike in navigating the new terrain of sexting, gender identity, breakups and porn. He sat down with Jarlath to discuss the challenges of writing the book, establishing the right tone, offering his own experiences without making it about him and how he found the courage to open up about his own suffering over the last two years. This is a one of a kind chat with a truly inspirational ex-Irish international, writer and therapist. Let's Talk the book can be found in all good book retailers now. Due to Continuing covid symptoms Irishman Abroad podcasts are running a little behind schedule. But this episode is definitely worth the wait. Sarah Palin is running for Congress but are the people of Alaska interested in the Masked Singer contestant? Donald Trump seems to think so. He backed the so-called hockey Mom/MAGA innovator to win. What are the chances that Donald will flip his opinion on Putin as his war crimes continue to disgust Americans? His sense of what is the most popular opinion might be so out of whack that it could cost him the Presidential nomination. Jarlath asks Marion if the atrocities in Bucha have changed anything in how America views this war and if the average Joe is paying attention to this and the January 6th investigation. Finally Marion answers a listener's question about Will Smith and where he might find redemption. This week we bring you a very special episode focussing on the work and passion of the Aisling Project which started 28 years ago in London aimed at helping vulnerable Irish people reconnect with Ireland. In this episode we are joined by the Aisling Project's creator Alex McDonnell who tells some of the most incredible stories about the Irish abroad that he has witnessed first hand over the years and the work of the Aisling Project. Jarlath is also joined by Ardal O'Hanlon, one of the Aisling Project's patrons and a proud supporter who discusses how he first came in contact with Alex in 90s London, why he is so passionate about the Project and the exceptional fundraising events that he is proud to be a part of. As the dust settles on the most dramatic tv event in recent US tv history, the Academy struggles with expectation of a punishment for Will Smith. Together with Jarlath, Marion teases out the word she has heard from the grapevine with the tightly knit group of members. The sands of public opinion shifted as the week went on and Marion assesses what the incident says about the wider state of the nation, discourse and disagreement. As the January 6th investigation widens its focus, Marion attempts to make sense of the bizarre text exchanges between Gini Thomas and Mark Meadows. Finally President Biden's apparently ad libbed comment during his speech in Poland is still a topic for discussion. Did he make this particular gaffe on purpose to send a message? Finally we take a look at how credible “insider information” at the Kremlin really is and Marion's movie recommendation for the week. It should have been a golden moment that both sides could unify on. The confirmation hearings for America's first ever black female Supreme Court judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. Instead Ted Cruz et al turned it into the worst kind of juvenile political pantomime. Marion McKeone tries to answer the question, “Why are these hearings necessary?” In the second half of the episode she gets into the latest developments in Ukraine and why she feels President Biden isn't doing nearly enough to help those fleeing the violence and those stranded on the ground. Finally we look at the grotesque way in which Presidential hopeful Ron Desantis has identified and leaped on what he sees as a winning political football. A power cut in St Albans cut the line between Marion and Jarlath but we still manage to get her recommendation for “What's good this week?" Mick Clohisey is a multiple Irish national champion over various distances, a 3 time national cross country champion and winner of every type of road race there is to offer including 10km and half marathon. For most people that would be enough, not Mick Clohisey. He is also a 2 time national marathon champion winning Dublin in 2018 and Belfast in 2021. Today Jarlath sits down to talk to Mick about his life, journey and amongst other things, his marathon PB of 2 hours 13 minutes from Dublin 2019. Not only has this man represented Ireland at major cross country championships 14 times, he also flew the flag for Ireland in the marathon at Rio Olympics 2016, the world championships 2017 and European championships in 2018. Mick opens up to Jarlath about the incredible highs and lows of competing at this level and how he navigates returning from injury for Sonia's big race on April 3rd. Could President Biden's radical military funding decisions and hostile language be enough to spark full scale war? Why are Kamala Harris' staff dropping like flies? Is the new surge in COVID cases going unnoticed and who will be Donald's wingman for the 2024 run? Some say he wants his daughter to start in this season of the reality TV show. Marion McKeone makes sense of it all this week and every week on Irishman In America. Any Girl is a ferociously honest, intensely tender and utterly unforgettable book that is as thought-provoking as it is timely. It is written by our guest today Mia Döring. Mia was exploited by an older man while in her teens. She explains to Jarlath how this exploitation carved her path into the sex trade. In her incredibly moving memoir we hear how she eventually left the trade and what life was like while within it. As you can imagine, this episode covers some adult themes of abuse, sex and trauma. Mia and Jarlath discuss a wide range of topics including the startling statistic that 1 in 15 Irish men pay for sexual access. Mia Döring asks, “Why are we not talking about the men? Why are they not talking? We do not hear from them. They don't ‘come out'. They don't create associations or campaigns for punter's rights. If punting is the legitimate and harmless hobby they claim it to be, why not?” If punting is the legitimate and harmless hobby they claim it to be, why not?” Any Girl: A Memoir of Sexual Exploitation and Recovery' by Mia Döring is published by Hachette Ireland (€14.99) If you have been affected by the issues raised in this podcast, contact the Rape Crisis Centre's 24-hour Helpline at 1800 77 8888 or the local rape crisis services in your area. Marion McKeone helps us navigate the mixed messaging and confusion over the catastrophe that is unfolding in Ukraine. Is an invasion of Poland a legitimate possibility or has the invasion stalled? The world watches through its fingers but is the time coming for the west to front up to Putin over his war crimes? We also get a round up of the latest domestic US news including Florida's “don't say gay” bill. What does it mean in everyday terms and is it just a political football for the Presidential ambitions of Ron Desantis? We get Marion's take on what will happen with the two other long-awaited trials. And finally Jar and Marion offer their “what's good” recommendation of the week. Sonia takes Jarlath to the fabled Bushy Park while she visits London with Jessica Hull to prepare for the world indoor championships. They return to her house in Teddington and take dive into the most important run of the week - The Long Run. Sonia's Ten Mile Road Race takes place on the first weekend in April and today's episode is part of a four part mini-series as they prepare to enjoy the event together. Jarlath explains how he managed to break 20 and Sonia points out a few key lessons that all of our listeners can take from the experience. How long is too long for your weekly big run? How should you fuel up for it? What shoes should we wear? Is a walking break a bad idea? We also take a trip around the parishes and get in much greater detail on Patreon.com/irishmanabroad.
