Flexible work has existed for decades. Think about local hairdressers, personal trainers, or tutors working for themselves – or even the jazz musicians in the early 1900s who coined the term ‘gig economy'. But the past ten years of technology have made it more accessible – and visible – to both the people who use it and those who work in it.But what is the right balance between job autonomy, economic security and worker's rights? Is there a world where an evolving labour market provides proper workers' protections and union representation while maintaining real autonomy and flexibility? This New Statesman podcast, sponsored by Uber ahead of the three year anniversary of their groundbreaking recognition agreement with GMB – the first of its kind in the gig economy – breaks down all of this and more, to discuss the future of work in 21st-century Britain.Journalist Suze Cooper was joined by a panel of guests including Sir Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham since 1994 and Chair of Parliament's Work and Pensions Select Committee; the GMB trade union's National Secretary, Andy Prendergast and Uber's UK General Manager, Andrew Brem.Through the episode, they discussed how changes in ways of working have come to the fore in our everyday lives, with technological advances seeing less of a focus on traditional industries and more on the dynamic, flexible labour market of the 21st century. Alongside these transformations we've seen the world of work change in other ways with the rise of hybrid working environments, the gig and sharing economy, work-from-anywhere culture and digital nomads. The pandemic has sped up and baked in these developments across the UK, as people's approach to work-life balance adjusted, with workers seemingly coming to value their autonomy in much more profound ways than previous generations.Options for flexible work across various apps and platforms have enabled more choice for millions of people around their working patterns, choosing when and where they earn. More and more, it appears British workers are putting greater value on autonomy and flexibility in their lives and careers than their parents and grandparents did, balancing work around other responsibilities like caring or studying. But the question for the UK – and considered by the panel throughout this episode – is how best to deliver this flexibility and autonomy whilst not compromising on the protections and benefits workers need. It was a most remarkable year. It started with the Big Freeze, ended with the assassination of President Kennedy and included the emergence of the Beatles and the Profumo Affair. On the football field (as soon as the ice melted in April) it was equally notable with Alf Ramsey's first game in charge of England, Leicester City missing out on the Double (sorry, Jon), Manchester United winning the Cup but just avoiding relegation (sorry, Colin). And off the field, it the famous Eastham case which liberated players from the shackles of their clubs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

A visa-free entry policy adopted by China for ordinary passport holders from six countries has been hailed by experts and industry insiders for demonstrating the country's determination to boost tourism and economic exchanges.Since Friday citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Spain have been able to enter China without a visa for business, tourism, family visit and transit purposes for up to 15 days, China's Foreign Ministry said. The new rules will be in place for at least a year.On Friday 2,029 passport holders of the six countries entered China visa-free, 12.5 percent more than on Thursday, the National Immigration Administration said."This is a positive and timely development," said Wang Xuan, deputy head of the Department of Hospitality at the University of Surrey in Guildford, southern England."The introduction of visa-free travel not only shows China's willingness to welcome more visitors but also offers real benefits, saving time and money, for visitors from those listed countries."It is also a strong pull factor for China to attract more desirable tourists who might be making their 2024 holiday plans during the Christmas season."Jens Hildebrandt, chief representative of the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Beijing, said the visa-free entry policy, which sends a positive message, is "highly valued" by German companies.Josep Maria Gomes, an international business developer at the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce in Spain, said the measure would make business visits easier, given that China remains attractive to businesses in Spain, Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday.Great potential"China has always been a focus for us and is a country that's always in our internationalization plans because it is not only a country with great potential … but also a country where our companies must be present," Gomes said.Andy Eastham, head of public relations and communications at Wendy Wu Tours, the largest operator of tours to China in the UK, said the move represents China's readiness to further open up to the world."It is a positive move from China to say 'We're open, we're ready and we want more inbound tourism.' Obviously we are anticipating that more countries, including the UK, will be added to the list."Eastham highlighted an increased interest in China from UK customers recently, with more inquiries coming through, and he said the agency is adding capacity for tours in China next year to cater to soaring demand.Such a positive sign is not only seen in the UK. Trip.com, an international online travel agency owned by one of China's biggest travel service providers, Trip.com Group, said the number of bookings from Europe to China had risen 663 percent in the first 10 months compared with last year, and by almost 29 percent compared with 2019.British Airways, the UK's flag carrier airline, also welcomed the policy, saying the measures enhance international travel."We are committed to facilitating seamless travel experiences for our passengers and adapting to changes in global travel policies," it said. The airline operates 22 weekly flights between the UK and the Chinese mainland. It said it is committed to playing its role in "strengthening this important travel corridor", with measures including doubling the size of Mandarin-speaking cabin crews and refreshing inflight entertainment systems. The visa-free entry policy is China's latest effort to improve its visa policies. Earlier last month it expanded its visa-free transit policy to 54 countries to include citizens of Norway. In July China resumed visa-free entry for citizens of Singapore and Brunei. At the beginning of the year China scrapped all COVID-19 testing requirements to give easier access to foreigners traveling to the country.Reporter: Zheng Wanyin
This week, Leah Brown talks to Sir Stephen Timms, Labour Member of Parliament for East Ham. He tells the story of his longest day in May 2010 when he was stabbed three times by a member of the constituency he serves. Listen in on his views about forgiveness: how it can really only operate where there is personal communication. He has received three letters from his assailant via the police in which she apologises for what she did. But Stephen is willing to go through the process of meeting her before she leaves prison. That experience taught him how much he enjoyed his job. So it didn't take much courage to carry on doing what he loves doing!

UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES with bestselling author and researcher Steph Young
H Healer and clairvoyant John Cain stood in the local civic hall with his hands on a patient, a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a bottle of whiskey nearby. As you can imagine, he was not typical of many involved in the spiritualist movement, whose attitude at times can tend towards holier than thou. Cain was born in 1931 in the village of Eastham, Merseyside, near Liverpool. During his national service in the Army he was a physical training instructor, and he was also a boxer and black belt in Judo. In 1956 he started his own business as a blacksmith and he became incredibly successful, employing thirty people and driving a Rolls Royce; but he would soon give it all up to devote himself to giving spiritual healing for free to anyone in need. One day, he'd been sitting in the pub with his wife, as he did most evenings, when he noticed he could see something out of the corner of his eye that looked like shimmering mist. Instinctively, he believed this had to be some kind of ‘energy,' and he felt suddenly inclined to place his hands on a nearby person in the pub who he felt was in need of healing. As he did so, the person's pain, that they'd been feeling for a long while, suddenly disappeared. Cain is interviewed on an old radio show called ‘Beyond Belief' for Radio Merseyside, and presenter Kieran Devay says, “Cain smokes up to 50 cigarette a day, swears like a trooper, and is more than partial to Scotch Whisky. He works twelve hours a day, seven days a week. His wife Audrey acts as his secretary, dealing with the hundreds of letters he receives each week asking for his help.” Cain says, “Going back to when I was about five years old my mother suffered with migraines. I just used to rub her temples and the pain would disappear. At the age of 14 I joined a boxing club. Later on, I practiced Judo for 25 years.” When members of his sports clubs would suffer sprains or other injuries, Cain found he could take away the pain by massaging and manipulating the injured areas of the body. “I found I could take the pain away – but didn't realise it was the gift of healing.” Cain says he was brought up in the Church of England but as a young man, his interest turned to Spiritualism and what spiritualists call a development circle, where people attempt to make communication with the dead. However, Cain didn't last long in the circle at his local spiritualist church, for understandable reasons; “We sat in the silence for an hour, and then you say what happened in that hour. Well, the lady sitting opposite me said, “You'll never believe whose been with me tonight John.” I said, “Well, go on, try me.” She said, “Well, I've had Long John Silver with me, and we've been walking for hours along the beach.” So, I said to her, “Did he tell you where the treasure's buried?” She said, “No,” so I said, “Well, let's go back into the silence, find out where he buried the treasure, and we'll all go and have a bloody good holiday in the Bahamas.” Then the lady sitting next to her said, “Isn't that funny Nancy, I've had his parrot sitting on my shoulder all night.” Well, I thought to myself, this is the time you bail out John!” After such nonsense, Cain decided he would leave the circle that night, but when he went back the following week to tell them this, one of the ladies in the group became upset and asked him how she would get her healing if he left the group. Cain didn't understand what she meant and so she explained that since he'd been attending the circle, her back pain had vanished. Then another lady in the group chipped in, telling Cain that she was in a lot of pain that evening and would he be kind enough to put his hands on her. Cain did as she asked, and her pain vanished. Sally Mann has lived on the same road in East Ham that her family have lived on since the 1800s. She and Dave have worked and played with their neighbours to form all kinds of shared spaces for common life: community halls, gardens, sports fields and more. This is a story about faith shaped more by encounters with people and place than by institutions and dogma. After the interview David Blower and Joy Brooks reflect on their own experiences of place and encounter with others. They consider the impact of power and politics on how they experience connection, community and spirituality. Born in a small town in Kansas, Kay continues a legacy of veterans in America from rural areas who seek the opportunity to serve and lift themselves out of poverty or situations with very few options. Her service began at a time when the military was facing a wave of social media criticism from leadership issues to new physical fitness tests. A lot of this originated with the Junior Enlisted Soldiers like Kay. A veteran of two Middle East deployments, she served nearly 8 years in the Army at ARCENT and 3rd Special Forces Group. She stopped by the virtual bar to discuss the lingering issues regarding the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), the lack of willingness to dedicate time and effort to self-improvement both physically and mentally, as well as her transition into civilian life.
