Australians in Iran have been urged to leave, after the federal government cut diplomatic ties with the country and expelled the Iranian ambassador from Australia. Many in the Australian-Iranian community have welcomed the decision, as well as the move by the Australian government to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation. While some Iranian community groups have been advocating for the move for years, some do fear what it might mean for family members back home.

The implications of Australia severing ties with Iran are potentially serious. The Iranian ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi  has been given seven days to leave after ASIO identified Iran as being behind at least two of the anti-Semitic attacks seen in Australia since October 7, 2023. Dr Ali Mamouri speaks to Andrew about the implications of the move by the Australian government.ANDIn 2000, at a secret meeting in the Vatican, an Australian bishop warned a deluge would soon overwhelm the Catholic Church. The sex abuse crisis would become the greatest challenge to the authority and reputation of the Vatican since the Protestant Reformation almost 500 years earlier. But this warning went largely unheeded. It's another revelation in the new book, Jesus Wept: Seven Popes and the Battle for the Soul of the Catholic Church, by Philip Shenon. In part 2 of this interview, we look at how the scandal enveloped three popes (but we begin with another controversy for then Pope John Paul II). GUESTS:Dr Ali Mamouri research fellow at Deakin University specialising in Middle Eastern studies and political Islam and author of this piece in The Conversation  Philip Shenon – investigative reporter and author of Jesus Wept: Seven Popes and the Battle for the Soul of the Catholic ChurchThis program was made on the land of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation and Naarm

Are we climbing the wall or just walking around it? How we handle conflict matters. Let's talk about doing it biblically. Join us this Sunday! EASY TO GIVE at Harmony, text any amount to (859) 459-0316 to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give). Get the fill-in-the-blank bulletins my.harmonychurch.cc/bulletins. ------------ OPENING ILLUSTRATION: When I was an elementary kid, something I hated was in gym class they would set up this wall that we had to run, jump, and climb over…  If you couldn't get over the wall, you had to walk around and up onto the stage.  I was this chubby kid who would run at that wall and jump as high as I could, which was like 3 inches.  I'd hit the wall and kind of bounce off of it and have to just go around the wall… What I found out as an adult is that “going around the wall” is what most people do… b Rather than facing issues head-on, they gossip, manipulate, or stew. Let me give you an example ILLUSTRATION: Early on in ministry, I had a parent who was upset with me about something.  “The wall” would have been to come and talk to me. Instead, she got together a whole bunch of other parents, and she had them all write down questions about my ministry.  They passed the questions to her and she started asking me questions…  Have you ever felt like you want to throw up?  I was young and didn't know what to do.  She started asking questions under the guise of it being anonymous which were really her questions.  I was nervous and felt completely blindsided - thank God there was a guy there who finally stood up and said, “Who is asking these questions” No one answered and he said, “We're done!” and all the parents walked out.   She went around the wall instead of facing the wall - I'm not saying whatever her issue with me was wrong, I'm saying the way she handled it was wrong. WE: You've all seen this in your workplace, ever worked with someone who was underperforming and instead of going over the wall and dealing with the issue, the person was promoted? It's a weird way of getting a person out of a position rather than dealing with the issue… When you try to go around “the wall” the problem is, the wall doesn't go away, it just moves… b The question is, “How do you handle conflict biblically?” ILLUSTRATION: You ever have a conversation with your kid and you're like, “ok, it's time for you to mature a little bit…” I don't think of anyone in here as kids, but I will tell you, I'm preaching this because it's time as Christians we mature and handle conflict the way Jesus would want us to because Of all the dangers I've seen in “the church,” the division caused by conflict poorly handled is the most dangerous of all. So, today I want to do the rest of the sermon more like a Ted Talk. I want to address 2 things… Is it right for you to judge someone else's actions? How should I handle conflict biblically? b Is it right for you to judge someone else's actions? We've all heard it before, right?  “The Bible says you aren't supposed to judge people…”  That's not actually what it says, did you know that?  Listen... Matthew 7:1-3 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? Jesus' warning is not to not judge - what His warning is that however you judge someone else is the standard by which you will be judged yourself… This is more about not condemning people than holding people accountable… There is a difference between judging a person and calling a person to accountability … 1 Corinthians 5:12-13 "12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”" Actually, as a Christian, you have a duty to look at the actions of your brothers and sisters and help make sure they are not dragging the name of Jesus through the mud… I felt like I needed to point this out because sometimes people feel wrong about holding other Christians accountable, but this is part of what we are to do - the key is to do it with Love and Grace. How should I handle conflict biblically? Matthew 18:15-20 15 “If your brother or sister[a] sins,[b] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.'[c] 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. ILLUSTRATION: as a Lead Pastor, I will have people come up and tell me something they are mad about with someone else at the church.  My first question is always some version of this… "Have you talked to them?” b Jesus very clearly lays out the process for dealing with conflict in the body of Christ Go point out their fault between the two of you If they don't listen, bring one or two other people with you to talk If they still don't listen, bring them before the church leadership If they still refuse, treat them like someone who doesn't know Jesus Do you know what typically happens in churches nowadays? Gossip to your small group, other volunteers, or others about it and get a bunch of other people mad who previously were happy Go straight to someone in authority and complain to them so they can deal with it Make a passive-aggressive social media post  Leave the church and complain about them at your next church b This lack of maturity in handling conflict and sin in the church is devastating the body of Christ in our world… b Jesus' call to handle this relationally and head-on is hard, but it's healthy… CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: Some of the bravest people I know sit in this room around you and you don't even know it.  They are people who have had conversations with someone who loved them who called out their sin and they listened, and they stuck with Jesus and they fought for a relationship with Him and they didn't give up and they have matured beyond what you can even imagine. Look, I'm not advocating for you to go looking for people and go on a witch hunt, that would be the worst thing.  What I'm advocating for is when you do see something wrong, that you go over the wall or you shut up.  You do the hard thing and you walk with people through it.  You walk alongside of them because you know what it's like to have had a 2x4 in your own eye and now you can help them with the splinter they've got in their own eye.   One of the clearest examples I can think of was when a friend and mentor asked me a question when I was a new Christian and he said, “Kent, do you know what humility is?” I said, “No,” and he said, “Well, you don't have any…”  Oof, he could have just talked to others about how arrogant I was and complained to people, but instead, he had a hard conversation with me, and part of the reason I'm still in ministry is because He did.   I want you to be a disciple of Jesus - I want you to be growing in maturity in Him.  So, I'm calling on you - stop handling this stuff immaturely and go to the person and talk to them.  I'm not saying this because we have a problem with this in our church, I'm teaching it so we never do… At Harmony, we are the kind of people who climb the wall, not go around it! ------------------

“During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the US economy almost completely collapsed,” historian Dana Frank writes in her new book, What Can We Learn from the Great Depression? “By 1933 a third of all those who'd had jobs were unemployed; another third were scraping by with lesser work. Racism, far from collapsing, festered and metastasized as insecurity rippled through the country, pushing people of color even further downward... As we face our own crises today—a precarious economy, outrageous inequality and poverty, growing racism, climate change—and lie awake at night, facing our own fears, these stories from the Great Depression offer us new and often surprising insights into our own time, our own choices.” In this live episode of Working People, recorded at Red Emma's cooperative bookstore, cafe, and community events space in Baltimore, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Frank about her new book and what taking a fresh look at poor and working people's struggles in the dark 1930s can teach us about navigating our own perilous moment in history.  Additional links/info below… Dana Frank, Beacon Press, What Can We Learn from the Great Depression?: Stories of Ordinary People & Collective Action in Hard Times Dana Frank website  Red Emma's website, Facebook page, and Instagram Dana Frank, The Los Angeles Times, “Trump Says He'll Expel a Million Immigrants. Dealing With a Controlling, Neglectful, or Deceitful Pastor: S6E30

Welcome to the Unlovely Truth. I'm your host church safety advocate and coach Lori Morrison. I help ministry leaders assess and address the 12 critical safety issues that exist in every church. Our churches need to be the safest places in our communities, so my mission on this podcast is to give you actionable steps to make your house of worship a true sanctuary in your community. Let's investigate the unlovely truth about real crime stories happening in real churches. I've got three cases to explore today, so let's dive right in.    Important points from this episode include:   Dealing with a controlling pastor Dealing with a neglectful pastor Dealing with a deceitful pastor 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 NIV   I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.   What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”   Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians to address problems he saw in the church, and one of the big ones was sexual immorality. If it happened back then, why do we think it can't happen now? Paul didn't ignore the problem, he acknowledged it so the church could fix things.    And part of his recipe for fixing things was to not associate with those in the church who were being sexually immoral. So why do we today do the exact opposite? I suppose that some of it is in the name of tolerance. We like to think we are amazing people when we overlook evil and call it loving people. Paul says that when it comes to people who call themselves Christians, that is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing.    It is so frustrating to watch churches get this wrong over and over and over. If this is a problem at your church, it's time to speak out. If you need my help, all you've got to do is ask. Let me know what you think of this episode! Send me an email a lori@theunlovelytruth.com or message me on social media. I love it when people are willing to have hard, but impactful conversations that strengthen physical, emotional, and spiritual safety in our churches. SERIES 3 EPISODE 48: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN Three times this weekend Trump announced he will invoke "The Alien Enemies Act" which gives him the personal, arbitrary power to send to a concentration camp, or to deport, anybody in this country based on their race. Make no mistake that he means it. Trump's anti-immigrant, specifically anti-Hispanic, hate speech has now climaxed with a promise to invoke the 1798 law that permits the president – in war time – to arrest and detain or deport without a hearing or without evidence of crime – American citizens and others – at his personal whim – based on their race. NOT where they were born, NOT whether they've committed or been suspected of a crime, NOT whether they are here legally or illegally. Based on their race.  The last time this country used it, in one of the most shameful episodes in our history, they rounded up the Japanese. Nearly all that lived in the Continental United States. Nearly none of them accused of crimes. Nearly all of whom had been born here. And you were Japanese, if you were one-sixteenth Japanese. The latest New York Times-Siena poll shows that among Hispanic voters Harris leads Trump by only 54 to 36. Mike Podhorzer, the recently retired political director of the AFL-CIO, explains that this poll number is just what you think it is. “When we do focus groups with the segment of Latinos that are answering survey questions saying that they're comfortable with mass deportation, what comes out quickly is” nobody has told them that things like the Alien Enemies Act gives Trump the PERSONAL right to send to concentrate camps or expel from this country, not criminals, not suspects, not undocumented immigrants, not gang members, not rapists, not murderers, but THEM. Then, says Podhorzer, you explain: Trump will have the right to expel your wife. And your children. And you. And no lawyer or court can stop him. What happens then? “That focus group flips.” Kamala Harris needs to get a direct-to-camera commercial up immediately warning Hispanics in this country that Trump can and will send to concentration camps, without as much as a hearing, their relatives and friends...and them. AS TRUMP SAYS THE MILITARY SHOULD BE DEPLOYED during this election, we learn he really wanted to use it to back a "new election" in the summer of 2021. And the media is still responding by saying that his return to power would be a "boon" to the business side of news. Not even Andrew Ross Sorkin, nominally an economics guy at CNN, seems to understand that Trump will happily declare that "The Alien Enemies Act" can be applied to an industry and shut down all the news organizations, seize their assets, and turn them into state-run media. After all, that's what Hitler did. THE COMIC RELIEF? J.D. Vance says he forgot to wear his earrings to a town hall. Misplaced them? I think I know where you should look for them, Jayvee.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
