A search for transiting planets around hot subdwarfs II Supplementary methods and results from TESS Cycle 1 by Antoine Thuillier et al. on Tuesday 06 September Context. Hot subdwarfs, which are hot and small He-burning objects, are ideal targets for exploring the evolution of planetary systems after the red giant branch (RGB). Thus far, no planets have been confirmed around them, and no systematic survey to find planets has been carried out. Aims. In this project, we aim to perform a systematic transit survey in all light curves of hot subdwarfs from space-based telescopes (Kepler, K2, TESS, and CHEOPS). The goal is to compute meaningful statistics on two points: firstly, the occurrence rates of planets around hot subdwarfs, and secondly, the probability of survival for close-in planets engulfed during the RGB phase of their host. This paper focuses on the analysis of the observations carried out during cycle 1 of the TESS mission. Methods. We used our specifically designed pipeline SHERLOCK to search for transits in the available light curves. When a signal is detected, it is processed in the next evaluating stages before an object is qualified for follow-up observations and in-depth analysis to determine the nature of the transiting body. Results. We applied our method to the 792 hot subdwarfs observed during cycle 1 of TESS. While 378 interesting signals were detected in the light curves, only 26 stars were assigned for follow-up observations. We have identified a series of eclipsing binaries, transiting white dwarfs, and other types of false positives, but no planet has been confirmed thus far. A first computation of the upper limit for occurrence rates was made with the 549 targets displaying no signal. Conclusions. The tools and method we developed proved their efficiency in analysing the available light curves from space missions, from detecting an interesting signal to identifying a transiting planet. This will allow us to fulfil the two main goals of this project. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02437v1

A leak is a very rare thing when it comes to the Supreme Court but it has been a week of rare things in America. One time Trump critic, JD Vance stormed to victory in Ohio with the help of Peter Thiel's chequebook and an admission that he says stupid things in public. While the whole country remained glued to a celebrity car crash trial like no other, Democrats are counting on their base getting so angry about the possible overturning of abortion laws that they will get to the polls in November. Marion is not so sure. Can feelings of that kind can be sustained and harnessed for that long in a world of scrolling outrage that changes week to week? Identity-  Is not a fixed concept. It is a set of qualities and beliefs that make one person or group different from others…. We can change our qualities/ characteristics/interests and beliefs. We base our identity on what we've done in the past when we really should be basing it on who we want to become. In today's show, I will talk about the ability to change your identity. One of the best ways of doing this is getting extremely clear on the type of person we want to become. There is a great exercise for this that I will share. Supplementary to this exercise we will explore: -A discussion on the pain vs pleasure scale to determine why it is necessary to live as a new version of ourselves?  -Different reminders/triggers to keep you in line with this new version. -Catching yourself being the old version. (Reflection, redirection, compassion). -Why we do the thing we do. Most times this is unconscious.    How can you begin to shift your identity today? Who do you want to become, what is the next version of yourself in your relationship? Becoming that version NOW, living from that place will begin to improve your relationship. This isn't only for our partner, this is for you! Your happiness, health, and lifestyle depend on it.  This episode will help you to begin your identity shift today. Sometimes, we need a slight course correction in our identity to create a successful relationship. Enjoy the listen and take the aligned action to change your relationship and your life.   If you have any questions, want to connect, or want to work with me, I'd love to hear from you. Does learning from YouTube videos create bad habits?

Two Left Feet Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2022 4:29

Does learning from youtube videos create bad habits? The answer is both yes and no. This video, I will argue it from both sides. If your main goal is to become familiar/comfortable with the basic step. Online Videos can be a great help. If you are goal is to become proficient in partner dancing, Then you need in person classes. I prefer in person classes, since you can ask about anything that comes up, Online Pre-recorded Videos, You do not have the ability to question the instructor. But I will say it doesn't hurt for you to go through a few videos and learn the basics. Obviously, if you're by yourself, it's impossible to learn the partner work. Online videos only show a limited pre-scripted angle of dancing. It doesn't have the adaptive, flexibility of a teacher, the nuance of partner dancing and opportunities of class learning. It should be SUPPLEMENTARY to taking classes, not a replacement. If you watch a beginner video by a good and reputable teacher you are good. Initially you may even learn more than in the class because you can replay and practice at your own pace. BUT Still going to class is important to understanding the theory, and of course ask questions. Watching videos does run the risk of creating bad habits. If you are a beginner and you try to learn intermediate/advanced techniques, This can lead to bad habits, Because you do not have a good understanding of the basic underlying fundamentals that lead to the more advanced techniques. If you are curious what is the best use of your time, then you should pursue whatever is the most fun, it will get you past the beginners hump quicker and be more entertaining. #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Podcast #BrazilianZouk #Dance #Tarraxinha #Zouk #Passada #RetroZouk #Ginga #Bolero #Forro #Lamba #LambaZouk #Afro #Latin #African #CapeVerde #Caribbean #Pachanga #Lambada #Dance #Dancers 2LF Links _______________________________________________ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tw0LeftFeet Instagram: tw0_left_feet Website: https://2leftfeet.blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2171874589599779/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoLeftFeetPodcast/ iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/two-left-feet-podcast/id1454425997 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bQSnwKDmHbDQdgnZ0OrC3 Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Twoleftfeet Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR109vJ4Pbl146Ok1u5vSuA Anchor: https://anchor.fm/twoleftfeetpodcast

Imperial College of London: Imperial College London の Huai-Ti lab. (tadasu)

In today's episode with Luisa Santos Bay, we go deeper on the microbiome and we get clearer on how it actually can transition the health care system from sick care to preventive care. We talk about the Human Microbiome Project and what they are trying to do, about mapping the microbiome, the future of pharmaceuticals, allergic reactions, how to eat healthily according to a micro biologist and the finally we assess the chances of creating Jurassic Parc. About Luisa: Luisa Santos Bay is doing a Ph.D. on how the gut microbes may affect animal behavior at the Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics (University of Copenhagen), which is funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Supplementary comments to what Luisa said: The bacterium Helicobacter Luisa mentions is specifically Helicobacter pylori. Research suggests that when in life H. pylori colonises the human gut/stomach it defines its actions. E.g. if you get H. pylori early in life, it may protect you from obesity. The example of mating in flies Luisa gave is in fact in mosquitoes and the associated bacterium is Wolbachia. The relative abundance of the human gut bacterium Akkermansia is low (not increased) in severely obese individuals. The Human Microbiome Project (HMP) was an American research initiative lasting 10 years (2007-2016). Thus, it has ended, but the general human microbiome research has certainly not ended. Today we go deep. We are talking to Luisa, scientist (to be), about the microbiome and how vast the influence of it probably is. We are discussing how gut bacteria might influence appearance, eating habits and possibly aggression. Moreover, we are going through some of Luisa's experiments in her PhD studies that examine if transplantation of feces in mice can change the dominance in mice. And finally, could it also be a “cure” to autism? Something might suggest it. About Luisa: Luisa Santos Bay is doing a Ph.D. on how the gut microbes may affect animal behaviour at the Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics (University of Copenhagen), which is funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Supplementary comments to what Luisa said: The study of autism in mice Luisa refers to showed that social deficits, and not hyperactivity, disappeared when introducing the bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri and/or certain microbial-induced metabolites in autistic mice. Luisa misremembered when saying “100 trillion genes”. The human microbiome is estimated to have millions of genes. Thus 25,000 human genes vs. millions of microbial genes.---Green Innovation Group Podcast is a podcast hosted and sponsored by Green Innovation Group, a danish consulting firm with one mission: Reaching drawdown and making the world more sustainable through innovation, rethinking the status quo and action. John Scott Lawton's English, you know ...

Welcome to my podcast, 'John Scott Lawton's English, You Know'. In this episode I interview Priscilla Morris from Loud and Clear Voice Coaching about the importance of protecting our speaking voice from overuse and damage. Our voice is an essential part of our personality. Research has demonstrated that our voice is often as distinctive as our fingerprints, unique to each of us; often instantly recognisable to others; and a key part of our character. However, in certain occupations and through misuse, it is very easy to unintentionally damage the voice through simple overuse, or through straining the vocal cords in some way. In this podcast, we consider some of the situations in which it is easy to damage the voice; discuss, in simple terms, what damage is actually done; and consider ways of protecting the voice from initial or further harm. Priscilla Morris gives clear and practical advice for anyone who uses their voice extensively in their work such as teachers, coaches and trainers; actors and singers; call centre workers; and anyone who uses their voice extensively on a day-to-day basis. Generous welfare states are losing their key characteristics, not least in Sweden, where privatisation of funding has proceeded privatisation of provision, beginning in the 1990s. Supplementary exclusionary sources of welfare in healthcare, education, and social care, have proliferated throughout European welfare states under the neoliberal agenda that has dominated debate across the developed world. Rather than full privatisation, we see semi-private solutions, in which the citizen becomes the consumer, but remains subsidised by the state in their pursuit of private welfare, via tax breaks that benefit the richest in society most, rather than those with the greatest need. At the same time, private providers have been able to free-ride on the state, for example by hiring like doctors and teachers trained on state-funded courses, whilst the divided welfare state erodes the more generous, universal system by undermining the trust in it and the willingness of people to contribute to it. Ultimately, it replaces one view of social policy as an investment, something that generates wealth and contributes to the future, with another, of social policy as a cost, that takes up resources rather than generates them. John Lapidus' The Quest for a Divided Welfare State: Sweden in the Era of Privatization (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) charts the development of this process in Sweden, beginning with the privatisation of provision, such as private hospitals and tutoring, and how it lays the groundwork for private funding, which puts pressure on existing generous and universal welfare systems sustained by the public sector. In our discussion, we identify the methods through which neoliberal advocates promote privatisation, and how ongoing privatisation becomes self-reinforcing to nullify opponents, win over ambivalent actors, and dominate the debate in the political sphere. We end on an optimistic note, looking at the education sector and discussing what we can learn from debates in this area to promote and restore equality throughout the welfare state. John is currently a Research Fellow at the School of Business, Economics and Law within the University of Gothenberg in Sweden, where he earnt his PhD in 2015. Prior to John's academic career, he spent several years as a journalist, and also spent time working in Nicaragua for the Swedish-Nicaragua Friendship Association, an international NGO that helps communities build self-help organisations and tackle poverty. Leo Nasskau is an expert on the future of work and interviews authors writing about public policy and political economy — particularly how capitalism can be reformed to deliver sustainable prosperity for all.
