Major League Baseball series in London

In the build up to our Speakers Only reunion event at Moonshot this week, in partnership with MLB, we are revisiting our conversation from last summer with their European Managing Director, Ben Ladkin. Although now representing a major American sports league, Ben's journey in sport began at Arsenal, where he spent 11 years, eventually leading the media group and building their digital and social media presence during the dot com era.Now at MLB, he operates across three key pillars: content, events, and participation. While the content pillar aligns closely with his past experience, he has embraced the new challenges of organising major events like the London Series (which took place earlier this month) as well as fostering baseball participation in Europe. This has required tapping into popular U.S. sports already capturing mind-share in Europe, finding alignment with popular global sports such as cricket, and tapping into culture and the wider export of Americana.Timestamps 2:00 - Ben's Journey 6:00 - How London Differs from other MLB International Markets 8:00 - Tapping into Cricket Fandom12:00 - Incorporating Education into Content14:00 - Strategy and Ambitions Across the Wider European Market17:00 - Tapping in to Merchandise and Music24:00 - Who Gets to Play in the London Series? 25:00 - Special Edition Merch28:00 - Ballpark Food and Exporting Americana31:00 - Future Plans and 365 Engagement Strategies Additional LinksHome Plate: MLB's Recipe for Increasing Fan AppetiteCan Cricket SUPERSTAR Harry Brook learn how to hit a baseball in just 1 day?! Women's baseball pioneer Laura Hirai joins the boys to talk about growing up an Ichiro fan in Japan, how she ended up as the first ever ball girl for the New York Yankees, being on the field for the 2019 London Series, wearing Brett Gardner's pants, hanging out with CC Sabathia (along with some royals?) and her current gig as a pitching coach. There were a number of recent prospect call ups and demotions and Sara and Shelly are joined by Eric Samulski to debate the players we're most into or out on.Discussions:Super subs with super values, do we value multi positional eligibility guys like Luis Rengifo appropriately in draft season?Saves have been scarce on the waiver wire. Only two of the 18 players with 10 saves or more were picked up after draft day in Jason Foley and Trevor Megill. If you're low on saves, when do you decide to punt? There were a number of interesting pitcher debuts last week, we debate Hurston Waldrep and Max Meyer rest of season (with a shoutout for DJ Herz).Pitching is scarce in deeper leagues, which middle relievers are you most interested in to bolster your rotation -- Jeremiah Estrada or Cade Smith? It wasn't all call ups last week, Spencer Torkelson, Reid Detmers and Parker Meadows were sent down, who are we holding onto through the demotion and why? Both Corbin Carroll and Michael Harris II are struggling this season, who do we believe in more rest of season?Love it or Leave it?Not loving Garrett Stubbs' slide into Luis Torrens during the London Series.Cosmic Baseball is the coolest thing this side of the Savannah Bananas.Wrigley Field hosted the Chicago Red Stars and it was the largest NWSL crowd in history (herstory?).Guest: Eric SamulskiHosts: Sara Sanchez | Shelly Verougstraete Join: PL+ | PL ProProud member of the Pitcher List Podcast Network

The Phillies are back from the 2024 London Series, and almost everybody there seemed to enjoy themselves. We look back at some of the weekend's most memorable moments, including Bryce Harper's big Saturday night, appearances from several 2008 Phillies and the Phillie Phanatic's hijinks. Rob Thomson said he wouldn't mind going to London every year to play. But the Phillies are back in the U.S., ready to open a three-game series against the Red Sox in Boston. Ruben, Jim and Todd discuss the team's recent outfield production, and how Nick Castellanos' recent play -- .958 OPS last 10 games, and a .797 OPS last 30 games -- and Whit Merrifield's productive weekend in London could solve that issue internally. Trea Turner could be back within the week. Brandon Marsh could be back soon, too. Do the Phillies play Edmundo Sosa a little in left field when Turner is back? It could provide another boos to the Phillies' outfield. Maybe then the Phillies don't need an outfielder before the July 30 trade deadline. Maybe then they use their trade capital elsewhere. The Yankees are set up bigtime with Luis Gil continuing his rookie dominance and Gerrit Cole looking, well, like Gerrit Cole in his first rehab start. But Sean says there's a secret weapon that we're not talking about who may be the key to the Yankees World Series run. Casey and Chinch discuss a potential next move for the M's that could put them over the top in the West. Make sure you're liking & subscribing to our youtube page below! https://youtu.be/hPFBHFI69kk
