What do a nine minute song about a bird, the chest hair of Israel's greatest entertainer, an FBI pursuit of a missing lead sheet, and a list of firings as long as Paul Sorvino's range have in common? Writer and futurist Joshua Ellis is back to talk about infrastructure collapse, right-to-repair, allotments, and his plans for less toxic social networks. We ask the question... why does no-one in the apocalypse ever have a Haynes manual?
Neil Tulley was a 54-year-old stepfather to two older children, 23-year-old Joshua Ellis and his little brother, 14-year-old Jerome Ellis, who he didn't get along with. Both had a dysfunctional childhood, which would only get worse when they moved into their mother's home, where she lived with Neil. Neil was known to be a violent drunk with a criminal history filled with abuse. One night, as he slept on the living room sofa, the two boys decided they had enough, and attacked him with two kitchen knives in a stabbing that was so brutal, that he was nearly decapitated. Though there was a pattern and history of violence towards the boys, Neil was asleep when the vicious murder happened. Was this truly a case of self-defence or something else altogether? What's on the other side of hyper growth? It's a question that makes Joshua Ellis, the founder of WithCo Cocktails, uncomfortable. But, as he explained in this episode, that's a good thing. A former real estate investor, Ellis saw an opportunity for a brand of high-quality, small-batch mixers and in 2016 launched WithCo, which stands for With Company, as a side project. Made with fresh ingredients and no preservatives, WithCo products are packaged in 16 oz. bottles wrapped in sleek, minimalist labels and come in eight varieties, including old fashioned, honey sour, agave margarita and a ginger mule. After his aggressive 2020 retail plan was upended by the pandemic, Ellis instead weaved together a DIY and paid social marketing strategy that fueled a surge in direct-to-consumer sales. Last year's growth has given way to revenue expectations of $6 million for 2021 and a staff of 25 employees that continues to expand. In an interview featured in this episode, Ellis explained how, despite being the company's sole employee in early 2020, he planned and executed upon a hastily revised business strategy, why he expects that a pandemic-driven shift in at-home drinking occasions will continue, how he's thoughtfully expanding the brand's retail footprint and what he means when he says that he's “building to sell.” Show notes: 0:48: Barry, Beer and Bites -- The episode's hosts chatted about John Craven's visit to San Diego, which included a stop at Athletic Brewing Co.'s rapidly expanding facility, a plethora of upcoming Speed Dating events, why entrepreneurs should get their tickets to BevNET Live and NOSH Live ASAP and a variety of new food and beverage products introduced over the past month, including pizza'nadas and an drink intended to arouse. 20:07: Interview: Joshua Ellis, Founder & CEO, WithCo Cocktails -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif spoke with Ellis about a recent sales milestone for WithCo, why he believes that going from “zero to 100” is a flawed notion and why he designed the packaging to evoke a multi-sensory experience. He also explained how he effectively utilized Instagram hashtags and direct messages to build awareness for and a conversation around WithCo and why he advocates for founders to step out of their comfort zone to better understand various elements of their businesses. Later he discussed how the company works with both independent and chain retail stores and why the “four P's” are guiding how he continues to develop WithCo and prepare it for a potential acquisition. Brands in this episode: WithCo Cocktails, Athletic Brewing, Babe Kombucha, Afia Foods, Brazi Bites, Amy's Kitchen, Free Rain, Spindrift, Corsa, Post Meridiem, Ranch2O, Sideyard Cocktails, Rebru Vodka, Thorn Brewing

Rita Britton is somewhat of a fashion legend. For 50 years she ran an independent fashion store in Barnsley, Yorkshire called Polyanna, which was an International hub for luxury fashion stocked with Rita's unique style. When Polyanna closed in 2014, Rita focused on developing her own brand, Nomad, made in the UK with fabrics sourced from Yorkshire mills such as Abraham Moon and Joshua Ellis. Rita has a very loyal customer base, and she knows a thing or two about retail and fashion. So it was fascinating to hear her thoughts on manufacturing in the UK as part of a panel discussion we held at the Make it British virtual event in 2020. I've picked out some of Rita's best bits for you to listen to here on the podcast, including her thoughts on educating people to buy better and buy less, why there has never been a better time to bring manufacturing back home, and how the UK makes some of the best textiles in the world, yet we are encouraging young people to work in nail bars and do eyebrows rather than work someone and make clothes! Literally, every line Rita comes up with is a gem - there are some real pearls of wisdom in here, which are great to hear from someone that has been in the fashion industry for as long as Rita has. Adrian Bryan-Brown is a press agent and theatrical promoter. He has been involved with Broadway theatre and was called "one of the top press agents on Broadway" by the Association of Theatrical Press Agents & Managers. In 1983, he joined Solters/Roskin/Friedman, working with Joshua Ellis on many Broadway productions. He then worked with Chris Boneau and in 1991 established Boneau/Bryan-Brown, one of the leading theatrical press agencies in New York. He has represented more than 200 shows including Tony Award-winning plays like Art, Copenhagen and The History Boys. Other plays include Frost/Nixon, Skylight and Amy's View and musicals include The Who's Tommy, Sunset Boulevard, Titanic, Jersey Boys, Monty Python's Spamalot and Mamma Mia! In 2015, Bryan-Brown was awarded a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre at the Tony Awards. This is the time of year when Press Agents especially are working overtime. Not only are there all those big Broadway shows opening on top of one another as we approach the Tony Award cutoff cliff (and only a handful of Press Agents to handle them), but then there are the awards themselves. That’s why we’re all lucky that Adrian Bryan-Brown, one of the partners in the mega firm, Boneau/Bryan-Brown (The Book of Mormon, Spring Awakening, Something Rotten!, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and so many more), sat down with me to share his thoughts about Broadway “spinsters” including: Why the primary job of a Press Agent is the same as a Playwright. How making ice cream cakes at Carvel led to his career as a Press Agent. What will press look like on Broadway in 20 years? How social media makes everyone a spokesperson and what Producers need to do about that. His take on Critics. Why they matter . . . or don’t.
