The world is constantly changing, but as someone now in his 60s, I have never seen this pace of change. Change is coming at us in almost every direction, and we must all step up to face it. Leadership on all levels is the answer. Part 1 of Leadership and Sustainability   Our guest on the show is an expert in leadership and sustainability. Osbert Lancaster has been in the industry even before the word sustainability appeared in the business dictionary. Most of his early consultancy conversations involved a lot of explanations.        Our conversation explores his journey towards his chosen career. It begins with an unusual childhood, as much of his early life was spent travelling with his parents. They were social anthropologists living in various locations around the middle east. He was not aware at the time, but the experience gave him a window into a unique way of life. Economic Development is a Sticking Plaster When he was too old to travel, he did his time in a private boarding school as you do when your parents travel, and ultimately went on to university to study agriculture. After twists and turns, he found himself in In economic development. It was while working in Poland in the 1980s that he realised economic development was about putting a sticking plaster on the failures of society and creating business opportunities out to other people's misery. That realisation led Osbert to explore the idea of sustainability and sustainable development and he has never looked back. It feels like we are in a collective hangover right now as we unlearn toxic ways of viewing difficult emotions, life experiences, and just being human. And the commitment to understand those unpleasant feelings or aspects of ourselves isn't any less daunting. It's hard work to discover why we can't set and maintain boundaries or deepen the courage to speak up when the stakes are high. But our capacity for discomfort creates our capacity to lead with courage. Our ability to work with our emotions helps us achieve the changes we desire inside us and around us. Working with our emotions–doing inner work– involves an intention to better understand why we do and feel and respond the way we do. When we do inner work, we take responsibility for our own needs, our pain, our difficult life experiences. We listen to our discomfort and get curious about what we need instead of exiling the parts of us that need our support.  Sure, this kind of awareness without action fosters more individualism. But when we deepen our awareness of what happens internally, it can also deepen our impact in the world around us. And when we lead with more courage, compassion, and confidence, that has a much needed ripple effect outside of us.My guest today lives this practice in a deeply human and accessible way that encourages and inspires.Nicole “Ziza” Bauer is a content editor at Magnolia. His faith is clearly the cornerstone of all he has done. If you saw him you might assume a few things...just like the saying. You might assume he's had quite a rosy life. You might assume he has no grace for imperfect eating or a missed workout. And you might assume his focus is all about looks. These would all be false assumptions. Breaking the NeedleThe average person makes choices that move the needle. How can you become someone who generates so much momentum that you break the needle?OPENING QUOTE:We always hear about, build your life around the things you love, build your business around the things you love. But that's really hard to do because for me, I'm really passionate and intense and I love a million things, so that list would be infinite. But, instead of that, what about, what do you hate not doing? ”—Jay FerruggiaGUEST BIO: Jay Ferruggia is the host of the Renegade Radio podcast, a top 20 fitness podcast on Apple Podcasts with over six million downloads. Jay has been helping people become the strongest version of themselves since 1994, and today is heralded as a coach of coaches, trainer of trainers, and champion of mastering not only physical strength but emotional and mental strength, as well. But the truth is that many of the people who have reached the pinnacle of success do it by focusing on one thing and doing that thing with everything they've got. [12:13] - The Daily Non-NegotiablesWhat's essential for your daily joy and progress?Take a look at your life and the things you're most passionate about. It might be exercise, or spending time outside, or laughing. Make these things non-negotiable as part of your day. Need to make room for them? Drop other things, but never the non-negotiable things that bring you joy.[22:54] - The Three Forms of AwarenessAwareness of Self, Awareness of Others, Awareness of SituationIntrinsic motivation doesn't require someone else telling you to work hard— it comes from awareness of self, awareness of others, and awareness of your situation. When you know what you're capable of, what others need from you, and where you stand (and where you need to be), you can accomplish anything.[31:12] - The Power and Limits of PassionHow do you turn passion into playmaking?Jay is passionate about hip hop, but that doesn't mean he could get into a recording booth and drop a Grammy-winning rap album. So how do we know our passions could turn into careers? The simple answer is that we don't. All we can do is choose a path and give it 110% and see where we end up.[35:25] - The Go-To Daily PurposeMake your purpose other peopleWhen you wake up in the morning and for whatever reason you don't feel like you have a strong sense of purpose, what do you do? For Jay, he defaults to helping others. There are always people that need help, and by the end of an act of service you'll almost always have re-centered yourself on what matters most to you.[49:04] - The Big SecretMost people actually want you to succeedPeople who succeed love to talk about the ‘haters' that wanted to see them fail. But the truth is that most people are good people, and we're energized by each other's successes. Do you find you are collecting skill sets to achieve future success and positions in your career? But what happens when the internal steam for your chosen career runs out mid-career? How do you navigate into a new path? I interviewed my best friend's husband about his 18 year career in higher education only to realize his career path was not fulfilling. He decided to go back to school in his late thirties as a married father of two children in order to build a brand-new, unrelated career path for himself. This insightful conversation is for anyone questioning their career midway through it. I'm so proud of Michael for being able to take the leap and share his brave story.Michael KoluchMichael is an IT professional, skilled presenter/trainer, and experienced project manager. Prior to moving into a new career in IT, Michael served in Higher Education for 18 years in various roles.  He was the Director of Academic Support at Marian University in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Assistant Dean of Students at Walsh University in North Canton, OH. Michael is a proud father of two children and a husband to my best friend Amanda. She bakes the best chocolate chip cookie in the world (no joke), and now ships to every state in the United States and to all parts of the world including Germany and Japan. Award winning author Lucinda Brant fell in love with the 18th century as an 11 year old who picked up a dusty historical tome and started reading about a world she felt she'd once lived in. Hello there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and in todays Binge Reading episode Lucinda talks about her career as a best selling author of Georgian romance,  and the international following who adore the aristocratic families she writes about almost as much as she does. You can download the first book in the Roxton series, Midnight Marriage, for free on her website,  but we've got three audiobook copies to give away to three lucky readers.  Enter the draw on the website at The Joys of Binge Reading.com or on our Binge Reading Facebook page. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: Lucinda's early - and mysterious - 18th century passionHow truth sometimes is stranger than fictionThe remarkable real life story that launched the RoxtonsLady Diana - The villain everyone delights inOn commissioning amazing coversWhy she loves Mary Balogh Where to find Lucinda Brant:  Website: https://www.lucindabrant.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LucindaBrantBooks/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/lucindabrant/ YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/LucindaBrantauthor What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny Wheeler: Hello there, Lucinda and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Romance writer Lucinda Brant Lucinda Brant: Thanks, Jenny. It's very nice of you to invite me on your show. I think this is probably only the second podcast I've ever done. Jenny Wheeler: That's wonderful. Thank you. There will probably be many more in the future. Was there a Once Upon a Time moment when you decided that you had to write fiction as distinct from any other writing you might have been doing, and if so, was there a catalyst for it? Lucinda Brant Romance author Lucinda Brant:  I don't know if there was a Once Upon a Time moment. I've always liked creative writing. I've enjoyed it since school. Probably around seven or eight, I remember thinking, I really enjoy writing stories. Then it would have been high school when I started writing for myself. I thought I'd try my hand at fiction. We had a creative writing class in English but it wasn't enough for me, so I started writing stories and I would take them into class because I didn't like Maths very much and I'd pass them around. I realized I had an audience because they'd say, when are we getting the next chapter? Creative writing? Or Maths? Jenny Wheeler: You passed them around in Maths? Lucinda Brant: I did. I didn't do much Maths.  Jenny Wheeler: You're another one like me, I used to read something under the desk while the teacher was talking. I was bored with what they were saying but I couldn't leave a book alone. Lucinda Brant: That sounds about right. That's how I got into writing fiction and then I put it down when I went to university because writing essays is a whole different kettle of fish as far as writing goes. I picked it up again once I started work after I'd finished university. Jenny Wheeler: You've made your name with 18th century historical romance, and that in itself is interesting because Regency is the hot period for romance and there are millions of Regency books. What made you settle on the Georgians, the 1700's, and what attracted you to them? Falling in love with the 18th century Lucinda Brant: I've always loved history since primary school.

When not traveling the globe Chris resides in Aspen, Colorado with his wife and three boys.TWEETABLESI realized to be successful was going to require much more than just being a good skier.I always find that the best ideas always come when you’re out in the mountains. If I could point to one thing in my career that has been the most important is that I always had great people around me. They were maybe better skiers, maybe more thoughtful, maybe more patient, but together we made incredible teams. When there’s political will to make a change, change will happen.Snow is money, snow is jobs. And we all need that. We can make a very strong economic argument for snowy winters and more mild summers.Follow Chris:Social Media: Facebook, Twitter or InstagramExplore his adventures on ChrisDavenport.comCheck out his coffee table book 50 Classic Ski Descents in North America.
