Today's guest, Doug Bremner, M.D., a Forensic Psychiatrist, is co-author of the new bestseller, Justice in the Age of Judgement: From Amanda Knox to Kyle Rittenhouse and the Battle for Due Process in the Digital Age. Justice in the Age of Judgment looks at these issues as they relate to high profile murder trials - from Amanda Knox to OJ Simpson, Derek Chauvin, Kyle Rittenhouse, Casey Anthony, Michael Jackson and many more. It is an unparalleled and unflinching look at the captivating cases tried on Twitter and TV, where the burden of proof and fundamental legal tenet of “innocent until proven guilty” is under assault from the court of public opinion. Anne Bremner, JD is the other co-author - making a perfect team her brother, Doug - to analyze this issue.

Attorney, Anne Bremner, defense counsel for Pierce County Sheriff, Ed Troyer, speaks to KVI's John Carlson about yesterday's not guilty verdict by a Tacoma jury. Troyer was found not guilty by the jury yesterday after being charged with two counts of false reporting after Troyer had a late night encounter with an African-American man in his north Tacoma neighborhood. The legal case against Troyer was brought by the Washington Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, after the Pierce County Prosecutor declined to file charges based on the evidence stemming from the encounter in January 2021. Bremner tells John Carlson there were two moments in the trial where she felt the case was made for Troyer's acquittal.
6am hour -- Democrats and Pres. Biden "throwing shade" at Iowa regarding the presidential primary voting, Oregon's Constitutionally shaky M114 running in to trouble even before the court challenge occurs, the story of the weekend is the Twitter documents that disclose the corporate censorship on content that hurt or negatively portrayed Democrats--including Joe Biden--during the 2020 Presidential election, GUEST: attorney Anne Bremner, defense attorney for Pierce Co. Sheriff, Ed Troyer, describes the contention in the criminal trial about what was threatened when Troyer approached what he deemed was a suspicious car in his north Tacoma neighborhood, why there may be one more proverbial shoe to drop in the trial, Oregon's AG wants a delay in voter approved gun-control law M114 that would require a permit to exercise a Constitutional right. 7am hour -- weekend version of the National Anthem by singer Ashanti has the music world buzzing, UW Husky football team will face former head coach--Steve Sarkisian--in Alamo Bowl game versus U. of Texas, Donald Trump's wild suggestions after Twitter documents show that Twitter censored content to benefit Democrats in 2020 and protect candidate Joe Biden from negative publicity, Democrats and Pres. Biden want to remove Iowa as the first vote in 2024 Presidential primary, the irony that Iowa--which is 84% white population--launched the Presidential campaign of Barack Obama isn't Black enough in 2024 for Democrats, new polling by Marquette University asks Republicans and GOP leaning voters who they prefer for President in 2024, the looooong pause before Dr. Anthony Fauci answers a news media question if he'd re-do anything as Director of NAID. 8am hour -- apparently Ye (Kanye West) is still very popular in Seattle after the updated listing of five most streamed music artists on Spotify, and then Bad Bunny makes a KVI debut, how Ye is able to manipulate social media and news outlets for attention to his anti-Semitic, abhorrent behavior; the WA Attorney General's office is under the microscope as the trial against Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer begins, the alleged threat in the Troyer encounter with newspaper delivery driver, "Cheap virtue signalling by Gov. and attorney general" doing favors for social justice activists.
Defense attorney, Anne Bremner, joins KVI's John Carlson to discuss the trial of her client, Pierce County Sheriff, Ed Troyer, for charges brought not by the Pierce County Prosecutor but the Washington Attorney General, Bob Ferguson. Troyer's trial started late last week after jury selection and restarts today in a Tacoma courtroom. Troyer is charged with false reporting and making a false or misleading statement to a public servant after a January 2021 confrontation with a driver in his neighborhood who turned out to be a newspaper delivery driver around 2am. Carlson explains why the entire trial has more political than criminal overtones because of the charging decision by Ferguson.
Can we still get justice in a world where Guilt or Innocence is decided in the court of public opinion before the actual courtroom trial has even begun? Today's guest, Doug Bremner, M.D., a Forensic Psychiatrist, is co-author of the new bestseller, Justice in the Age of Judgement: From Amanda Knox to Kyle Rittenhouse and the Battle for Due Process in the Digital Age. Have you been noticing how much public opinion has been growing - for or against defendants - with mobs outside courtrooms and inside social media? Have you wondered how much these activists have affected the eventual verdict of high profile cases? Can juries be objective anymore when they have to pass by throngs of threatening protesters?

When Amanda Knox got back to her apartment in Perugia, Italy, she was terrified to see blood in the bathroom while her roommate lay lifeless in her locked bedroom. It was 2007, and she was in a foreign country as a foreign exchange student. After the authorities compiled evidence at the gory scene, the authorities concluded Amanda was the culprit. She was wrongfully convicted. A grueling investigation followed, both involving the Italian and American justice systems. It was only until 2015, 8 years later, she was finally acquitted. Investigating crimes is a crucial part of any justice system. Experts utilize critical thinking to ensure that traces are accurate.Decision-making is just as crucial as gathering evidence.Doug Bremner is a psychologist and physician based in Atlanta, Georgia. Doug's expertise in psychiatry and nuclear medicine encouraged him to release a book with his sister, Anne Bremner, about the Amanda Knox case. They expose the flaws of the justice system, and the solutions needed to address and resolve wrongful convictions. In this episode, he explains more about the psychology involving the authority's decision-making process. What are the signs of domestic violence and abuse? Could you readily spot them? Most of us can't. Partially because many of the forms of domestic violence and abuse are not physical so we don't see the bruises etc that we typcially expect in a DV case. Before abusive people like Josh Powell reach the point of physical violence there are lots of ways he or she can abuse - manipulation, coercion, threats, using children or a parent to control others - and the list goes on and on. And often times abuse is generational. In Josh Powell's case, he was abused by his parents and they were abused by theirs, so it was a developed pattern of behavior. Tune in to this last episode of our discussion with attorneys Evan Bariault and Anne Bremner to hear all about this sickening form of behavior!Clearly, now that we have the ability to review Josh Powell's actions before he killed (assumingly) his wife, Susan, and then murdered his two little boys with a hatchet, then burned himself and the two boys to death, we know at least what his mindset was.Such is the Powell Family Tragedy.Josh Powell, the father, was a psychopath. But like most psychotics, he was able to hide his behavior from all but the closest to him. Sadly, his wife Susan knew what he was capable of and literally made notes and videos to her loved ones stating that if anything ever happened to her it was Josh that had killed her. Then, on a cold December night in Utah, Josh Powell took his two young boys camping in the desert West of Salt Lake City - which no sane person would ever do. Not surprisingly, Susan disappeared about that same time.We all know what likely happened to her. Josh killed Susan in a rage, probably because he was losing control of Susan and his own circumstances, and then buried her somewhere in the desert.Within weeks of Susan disappearing Josh moved himself and his two young boys up to the Seattle area, where the State of Washington removed the boys from Josh's custody and ordered him to undergo a psychosexual evaluation. A short time later he killed his boys and blew himself up. Anne Bremner and Evan Bariault are attorneys who have been fighting to get justice for Susan, her two young boys and Susan's parents for over a decade. They join us to tell this tragic tale in a way that only those who are intimately involved with the case can. “You can't handle the truth”, the famous response elicited from fictional Lt Colonel Nathan Jessup on cross examination by the character played by Tom Cruise to this day remains the quintessential “gotcha” moment in a trial. A cross examination so good that it broke the witness, cracked the case and freed the accused. Popular shows, documentaries, movies and docudramas all focus on this type of cross examination moment - moments created by the dynamic exchange between lawyers and witnesses. In 2021, my podcast the Killer Cross Examination Podcast, featured some of the best, most well known and iconic lawyers in the country. The lawyers who joined me included lawyers who defended OJ Simpson, Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, George Zimmerman, Phil Spector, Steve Avery, Charlie Sheen, John Gotti, Jr., William Kennedy Smith, Chris Webber, Casey Anthony and Michael Peterson to name a few. From A-Z, Anne Bremner to Jack Zimmermann, I interviewed my peers, the lawyers who the writers try to copy and emulate when they write the scripts for the Netflix shows. Unscripted, uncensored and more. As we say hello to 2022, I also bid farewell to F. Lee Bailey, who pointing a finger at me said, “I know a great trial lawyer when I see one.” Here are some excerpts from 2021 from the Killer Cross Examination Podcast featuring yours truly, F Lee Bailey, and other iconic lawyers, e.g., Tom Mesereau, Alan Dershowitz, Mark Geragos, Linda Kenney Baden, and more. Subscribe to the Killer Cross Examination Podcast on Apple, Anchor, Google Podcasts, Goodpods, Amazon Music, YouTube, Spotify and Audible to name a few. Happy New Year
