EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking. I appreciated the heads-up on AI-generated voices. I knew exactly where I was going as the episode progressed. What I Thought Could Use Some PolishingI'm undecided about the AI reading the scripture. It reminded me of Yul Brenner. These weren't horrible robotic voices (but reading the King James Version doesn't help—even when a human reads that version, you really have to pay attention). This is going to be one of those things that you either like, or you don't. You might be like me, and be on the fence. I think over time, you get used to the AI accent. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Hugo Morley, grandson of actor Robert Morley. Depending on what age you are and what country you grew up in, you might know Robert Morley for different things. If you are an American, you know him from his stint as the spokesman for British Airways or possibly the film Who Is Killing The Great Chef's of Europe with George Segal and Jacqueline Bisset. It was fascinating to find out from Hugo, that Robert actually had a lot of leeway in the BA commercials direction. But if you grew up in England or Australia, you might know Robert Morley from the stage where he performed in about 100 films and starred in/wrote many plays. His career spanned more than sixty years and in fact, his first film role garnered an Academy Award nomination in 1939 as King Louis XVI in Marie Antoinette, starring Norma Shearer and Tyrone Power. That's one hell of a debut. Hugo was open with us and told us about (free) trips he took with his grandfather and family thanks to British Airways, of meals he shared with him and time spent in Robert Morley's back garden. There was swimming and cigars….for Robert, not Hugo. We also learn about Hugo's theater critic/actor father, Sheridan Morley who was quite well known in England. We learn about his influence on the musical Les Miserables, how an interview with Carol Channing led to Hugo becoming her Godmother and how Yul Brenner played a part in their relationship. Along the way we talk about everyone from Eli Wallach to David Tomlinson, Griff Rhys Jones, to Joanna Lumley and more. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.

As humans, sinister robots have been around since the days of Edison. We see them in the malfunctioning Yul Brenner of WESTWORLD, or the single-minded killing machine of THE TERMINATOR, or Alicia Vikander's AI powered humanoid in EX MACHINA or the nascent super intelligence of Ultron . They threaten us. Host Garen Daly dives into this world of emotionless adversaries with film critic Erin Underwood and film director David Giancola. Existential threats, ethical mine fields, and the emergent AI. are all at the intersection of technology and cinema. You see, Reddy got sad over something again and impulsively quit the League to resume his normal life as a Yul Brenner lookalike in NYC. He assembles an instant family in the span of 20 minutes and goes to a Halloween parade in February where he is attacked by Doctor Destiny and his “bad dream machine” that only makes you see giant bugs. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Eric Bonerz whose father Peter Bonerz you all know from his acting and directing career. Likely, most of you know Peter Bonerz as the role of Jerry the Dentist on The Bob Newhart Show. But did you know that Peter directed some of the biggest (and some of the most bizarre) television shows of all-time? From Wingsto Murphy Brown to Home Improvement to Friends and News Radio, Peter Bonerz has more than 350 directing credits to his name. We also learn about some of his pilots & short lived shows like Apple Pie which did not make it. One, about humans playing dogs with Chuck McCann and Charles Martin Smith, might be the weirdest of them all. We talk to Eric about being on set like Catch-22 and Medium Cool and how his dad made it a point to be home for dinner and to be a parent who was present. Always. We also discuss Eric's own career, working at the Beastie Boys (wink, wink) store X-Large, his offbeat Bay Area band Eskimo and how he was the PD on the internet radio channel LuxuriaMusic.com which is yours truly favorite radio station. If The Day The Clown Cried, Yul Brenner, the band Primus, tagging along with Adam Arkin or seeing Keir Dullea eating sushi alone in the 80s mean anything at all to you, you must listen to this episode. The Rarified Heir Podcast's latest episode begins, now.
Is it cold in here? Or is it just this list of absolutely frigid Disney characters? In November 1987, Jamaican sprinter Derice Bannock trains to qualify for the 100 metre in the 1988 Summer Olympics. He fails to qualify when fellow runner Junior Bevil accidentally stumbles, not only falling over himself, but knocking down Derice, and another competitor named Yul Brenner.Derice petitions for a re-heat, but committee leader Barrington Coolidge, though he pities Derice, refuses. He invites Derice to try again in four years' time, or to try out for one of the only two other sports Jamaica competes in; boxing and cycling. Derice spots a photograph in Coolidge's office, featuring his late father Ben, standing next to a fellow Olympic gold medal winner. Coolidge identifies the man as disgraced American bobsled medallist Irving Blitzer, who was disqualified for cheating in the 1972 Winter Olympics, and now works as a bookie, fortunately not far from where Derice lives. Derice realizes he could participate in the 1988 Winter Olympics by forming a bobsled team, recruiting his friend Sanka Coffie, a pushcart derby champion.Derice and Sanka track down Blitzer, who at first refuses to help Derice, until learning he is Ben Bannock's son. He reluctantly agrees to coach the team. A recruitment drive fails miserably. Blitzer shows a film about bobsledding on a slide projector, but is heckled, and when the lights come on, only Derice and Sanker are still present. Fortunately, Junior Bevil and Yul Brenner arrive late to the meeting, making the required four-man team. Junior, like Derice, can't wait another four years to enter the Olympics, and Yul Brenner just wants to get off the island. The team train with Blitzer, though Coolidge refuses to fund the $20,000 needed to participate in the Olympics, believing the team's inexperience will bring shame to Jamaica. Derice's attempts to find another sponsor fail miserably. The team are forced to find other ways to earn the money- Sanker tries his hand at busking, with no success. Yul Brenner holds arm-wrestling contests, and Derice even sets up a kissing booth- these ventures meet with moderate success, but they still haven't anywhere near enough money. In the end, Junior sells his car to finance the trip.In Calgary, Blitzer registers the team, receiving an old bobsled from his former teammate Roger. The Jamaicans struggle to drive the bobsled and adapt to the cold, though exercise and hard work eventually pays off. Derice begins to copy the techniques of the very efficient East German team. The East German team, and their captain, Josef Groole- the current bobsled world record holder- constantly heckle the team during try-outs. Eventually, all the members of the team except Derice get into a bar fight with the East Germans. Derice reprimands them severely. After weeks of training, the team successfully qualifies for the finals, only to be disqualified by the Olympic committee, but this is only where their story begins...::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::;Our DM is Dalton RiddleOur Players are Andrew Gehrlein, Michael Adair & Alissa AdairEditing by Alissa, Michael, and AndrewTheme song (both old and new!!) by Dustin Hook (so talented)Please check out our Instagram, Twitter and Tiktok @dungeonradiohour to keep up with the latest DRH news! bye for now~

Third time is the charm! Twice scheduled to grace my living room pre-pandemic, what a Thanksgiving gift Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner, George Chakiris is. Perfectly timed. Ridiculously easy on the eyes, he defies the passage of time and is as gracefully humble in word and deed as he is gliding across a dance floor, or the streets of the barrio, as the case may be. Forever, Bernardo, we dove into a multitude of his other films, from his first, singing with a boys choir opposite Katherine Hepburn in Song of Love, to background dancer alongside Marilyn Monroe, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosalind Russell, and Cyd Charisse, to name but a few. Taking his first dance class at 19, he did over a dozen films almost immediately, and went from gypsy to starring in the London production of West Side Story, as… wait for it, Riff. George had not only never acted, he'd nary taken an acting class, and yet in short shrift, he was earning an Oscar, as Bernardo opposite Rita Moreno, in the winningest musical of all time, besting Montgomery Clift, Peter Falk, George C Scott, and Jackie Gleason. A multitude of dramatic films followed, starring opposite Yul Brenner, Charlton Heston, Gene Kelly, Richard Widmark, and Yvette Mimieux, which names but a few. Fabulous stories about fabulous women, Judy Garland (genuis), Liza Minelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Jones, Natalie Wood, Elaine Stritch, and a great one about Elvis. As taken with all of the above as I think we'd be, George's refreshing humility is a gentle kiss to Hollywood glitz and glamour. Speaking of glitz, George parlayed his talent from the silver screen to sterling silver Jewelry, featuring necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more. BLING! I was shocked to discover he not only designes the gorgeous pieces, he silversmiths them into reality. Perfect holiday gifts for that very special someone. You? I've got my eye on one or two. georgechakiris.com I'm currently devouring George's memoir, My West Side Story, with story upon story of the movie and all that is George Chakiris's delicious life. https://amzn.to/30OeD36 These have been challenging days. 2020 has been a year filled with catastrophic disasters of all types, and the only thing unclear is which movie we're reenacting at the current moment. Backdraft meets Twister meets 2012, with a dash of the Day after Tomorrow and a near miss by Armageddon. If those weren't crazy enough, there were a few reports of brushes from Orca and Jaws tossed in for variety, with slices of Yul Brenner and Chuck Heston in The Ten Commandments (Locusts and plagues, no less). I could point you to news stories showing all of those things this year. Both the man-made and natural disasters we're now facing are something we feel helpless against, at least at the scale we're facing now, so how does one combat all of that? The answer might be to combat the things you can, and survive the ones you can't. It's one in the “win” column if you get off Isla Nublar alive, whether or not the T-Rex is still standing when you leave. So how does one survive? Preparation is the best weapon we have. And for those of us who also have non-human living things to protect, the difficulty level goes way, way up when responding to an emergency (ever tried to catch a panicked chicken?). Chaos theory gone wild. Today, we have just the person to tell us about how to go about it. We're bringing you our conversation with Julie Atwood of The Halter Project, who started by training first responders in safe animal emergency response, but broadened the scope, now offering education and resources for the rest of us. We have a visuals up on our Backyard Green YouTube channel, if you would like to see. Training EMT's to save a plastic horse (in preparation for the real thing) has to be seen to get the full impact of the scope of the task. We'll let you insert your own mental C.G. disaster of choice in the background on that one. Hey look, it's Yul Brenner! It's not The King and I, but Yul Brenner! This was his year, and he didn't have that many years in Hollywood, so if you don't see this one, watch The King and I, his iconic performance. In any case, this movie is definitely interesting.
Two of the Behind The Curtain's favorite guests, press agent Joshua Ellis and critic Peter Filichia, join Rob and Kevin to look back on their interactions with some of Broadway's most famous, infamous, and truly bizarre legends of the theatre. Peter and Josh look back on the true world of Sir Laurence Olivier, the terror of a certain Broadway diva, the kindness of Yul Brenner, and the humility of Diana Rigg. To compete in the Olympics, Derice and his best friend, Sanka, a champion push cart racer, seek out Irv Blitzer, an old friend of Derice's father Ben who tried to recruit sprinters to the bobsled team years ago. Irving is an American bobsled two time Gold Medalist at the 1968 Winter Olympics who finished first in two events again during the 1972 Winter Olympics but was disqualified from the latter for cheating and retired in disgrace to Jamaica, where he leads an impoverished life as a bookie. Derice's persistence eventually convinces Irving to be their coach and return to the life he left behind. They eventually recruit Junior and Yul, though Yul is still upset over Junior's mistake at the Olympic Trial. The rest is, literally, history.Trivia - Contrary to the story in movie, the Jamaican team was met with open arms by the international Bobsledding teams. One of the other teams even went so far as to lend the Jamaican team a back-up sled so they could qualify. The Jamaican bobsledder characters in the movie were all fictional characterizations and were not based on their real life counterparts. John Candy's Irving "Irv" Blitzer coach character is also fictional.Final John Candy starring film to be released before he died of a heart attack five months later. The original cast who was envisaged by Disney for the film was Denzel Washington as Derice, Eddie Murphy as Sanka, Wesley Snipes as Yul, Marlon Wayans as Junior and John Candy as Irving Blitzer. Finally, only Candy played in this film. The crash scene at the end of the movie, except for the close-up shots, was the real footage of the actual Jamaican bobsled team crash taken from the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.Contrary to the movie, the infamous crash wasn't due to a mechanical error, but more or less losing control of the sled at such a high speed.Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner” Due to Covid-19 the Disney has postponed the release of the following movies: Mulan, Black Widow, New Mutants, Antlers, Personal History of David Copperfield, Woman in the Window, Production has been halted on the following: Live Action Little Mermaid, Shang - Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings, Home Alone remake, Avatar sequel, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision.Disney is shockingly closed still. This is the first episode of a new series called Make/Remake where we look at two films, an original and a remake and compare and contrast the films. It isn’t about anointing, which one is the superior film or deriding remakes as unoriginal. This series is about looking at two films that tell the same story and how the utilize the art of telling a story in both similar and different ways. This week Dakota Arsenault is joined by Stephanie Prior to talk about Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven. Seven Samurai was released in 1954 and was directed by Akira Kurasawa (Rashomon, Akira Ran). The film was nominated for two Oscars (Best Art Direction/Set Decoration B&W and Best Costume Design B&W) and remains one of Japans most famous and influential films. Only six years later did The Magnificent Seven come out, it was directed by John Sturges (The Great Escape, Gunfight at the O.K. Coral). The film only received one Oscar nomination for its iconic score even though it starred a who’s who of Hollywood including Steve McQueen, Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Eli Wallach and more. What do you see when you look at yourself? Battling confidence issues in the movie, Cool Runnings, Junior Bevil was asked by Yul Brenner what he saw when he looked at himself in the mirror. Yul then told Junior what he saw. "I see pride. I see power. I see a bad a** mother who don't take no crap off of nobody!" In this solocast, Paul J Long discusses the power of pride and confidence and how displaying a reasonable amount of these traits can make the difference in achieving anything you set your mind to.
This week, Nathan and Eric are thrilled to welcome actor, singer, and voice actor Paul Nakauchi. Paul has had a long career onstage, performing on Broadway, London’s West End, and extensively in regional and international theaters. Paul launched his career in Yul Brenner’s final revival of 'The King and I' and has appeared in numerous subsequent productions of this classic musical, including playing the King opposite Elaine Paige in London and a principal role in the most recent Broadway revival. Paul also appeared in Allegiance opposite Lea Salonga and George Take, a musical with personal resonance for Paul who tells us about his own family's experience in internment camps during World War II. On television, you may have seen Paul on Knots Landing, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, ER, and the current Netflix adaptation of Carmen San Diego. Paul played Watari in the recent Netflix adaptation of Manga series Death Note. And he is in demand on the convention circuit due to voicing Hanzo in the popular video games Overwatch and others, including World of Warcraft. Paul is as charming as he is talented. Enjoy! Welcome to a new year and hopefully a more frequent podcasting schedule of recording on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month. Can your favourite old-but-lazy duo maintain such a punishing pace? During the discussions for topics for this episode, Chris went to the bathroom for some quiet time. When he came back Ed had asked dedicated grumpy-Canadian hater Amanda Folson to join this episode to talk a bit about the life of a developer evangelist, Greg LeMonde, the Battle for PHP CoC, how Composer saved PHP, and CodeMash. Along the way Amanda and Ed ganged up on Chris showing their hatred for their peace-loving neighbours north of the 49th parallel and during the aftershow drove him away with talk about audio recording equipment.
