Kevin Quigley joins us to talk about how the province's wildfire emergency response came together. He's the director of Dalhousie University's MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and specializes in the government's role in emergency and disaster management.
How well did government officials prepare ahead of Hurricane Fiona? What should be done differently next time? We ask Kevin Quigley, director of Dalhousie University's MacEachen Institute for Public Policy. He specializes in the government's role in emergency and disaster management.
He says it's a bit difficult to rate the provincial response to Hurricane Fiona at this point. Kevin Quigley specializes in public sector risk and crisis management, strategic management and critical infrastructure protection. He says we should all be supportive as crews work to help people recover from the natural disaster. But he adds it's important to take a critical look at the response after the fact. The Dalhousie professor says we live in an area susceptible to hurricanes and we will likely have to deal with this again in the future. And we should be invested in learning what went right and wrong with planning, preparing and then dealing with weather and other events that impact us this dramatically.

The Duke Blue Devils had a pretty good squad in the shortened 2020 season. Add Michael Sowers to the mix while also retaining the services of pretty much your entire 2020 roster, and that is a recipe for winning of the likes Duke hasn't seen in a few years. I've always been very up front about the fact that I think Michael Sowers is one of the best college lacrosse players of all time. Now Duke has that guy. Couple that with JT Giles-Harris, a guy many argue is the best long pole in the country, and now the Blue Devils take the field every game with the #1 player in the country and the #1 defender in the country. That's going to make them tough to beat. Guys that will compliment Sowers on offense, Joey Manown, Joe Robertson, Dyson Williams, Reilly Walsh, Nakeie Montgomery, Owen Caputo, Kevin Quigley, Sean Lowrie, Brendan O'Neill. I mean the list goes on. Teams will have to focus on Sowers, but others will feast as #22 draws eyeballs. I'm not trying to predict Duke will win it all in 2021. Teams still have to play and win games. All I'm saying is that this team is in fact built to destroy, and it is going to take a total team effort from everyone they play to topple this giant in 2021. Backstage at The Naked Comedy Showcase 3/5/2020 This was recorded right before the pandemic of COVID-19 started to really affect lives throughout America. Due to the shut down of ImprovBoston and many other businesses and comedy clubs, there will be no March edition of The Naked Comedy Showcase. This episode serves as a nice dose of normality for the podcast crew, and a great episode to enjoy while staying home and washing your hands. Matt Kona chats with the visiting original podcast producer Nick David, podcast favorite Dan Martin (whose album recording was postponed to another date in the future, so stay tuned!), Kevin Quigley, “Big D”, Jeff MacKinnon,Chris Connolly, first time Nick Martucci and very special guest Ryan Clauson. Ryan was a regular on the Boston Comedy scene, moved to L.A., toured colleges around the country, moved back to New Hampshire a while back and now pretty much only does comedy on this show. He’s an interesting guy, brought some musical instruments and we captured the audio of his set as well as a candid conversation after the official broadcast ended detailing the story of how he came to be booked on this particular show. Check it out and enjoy! And keeping check back with ImprovBoston and hopefully we'll be back on the first Thursday of the month. Get your tickets online because it sells out! Bring your friends, but don't tell them what it is!

This may be one of the more bizarre episodes in recent history. It's like a strange split 7" between two very different bands. We start with Dan Martin and I talking with April Bruckner and her Donald Trump puppet. Alex Foolski comes on and talks in a slavic accent for a while and generally clowns around and talks about nudist colonies aka 'lifestyle retreats.' Kevin Quigley comes by and chats and with producer Deadair Dennis and Matt. We round out the show with Julie Mizraji, a staple of The Naked Comedy Showcase who opens up about her ongoing struggles with cancer. Today on the show I chat with Thad Beatty, guitarist for the multi-platinum country duo Sugarland. In so many ways, Thad's story closely mirrors mine. The details are distinct, but no matter — the journey is all too familiar. I first came across Thad's story on Ironman.com and — struck by the similarities in our journeys — knew I had to have him on the show.Just a few years ago, Thad tipped the scales at 230 lbs. Overweight with raging blood pressure and alarmingly elevated cholesterol, the touring musician lifestyle had him headed in the direction of irrevocable health problems in his mid-30's.His decision to turn his life around snapped into focus the day he found out his mother had been diagnosed with colon cancer. In support and solidarity with mom, both Thad and his brother decided to clean up their act. It started simple — ditch the lousy processed foods and start eating more fruits & vegetables. One thing led to another, and before he knew it, Thad found himself a convert to the PlantPower lifestyle. Not long thereafter, Thad shed the weight – 75lbs in all — down to a trim 165 lbs. Life was good. But then came another moment of clarity. Sugarland's guitar tech was diagnosed with advanced lymphoma. MusiCares came to his aid, but it was too late. Kevin Quigley unfortunately passed away in March 2012.It was at this moment that Thad decided to focus on service — giving back to his beloved profession. So was borne his dream of completing an Ironman. Not for himself, but to raise money for the foundation that had come to his friend's aid. Thad achieved his dream, finishing the Arizona Ironman last November, raising funds along the way.But that was just the beginning. Thad decided to take his service game to the next level, ultimately establishing his own foundation — Music That Moves– dedicated to improving the holistic health and fitness of his fellow musicians beyond the stage through various means, including sharing the lifestyle principles that changed his own life. And this October he's taking his game to the main stage — this time not as a musician but as an athlete — lining up in Kona to compete at the Ironman World Championships as part of Ironman's Kona Inspired program. I'm hoping we'll all catch a glimpse of Thad and his story when NBC airs the race broadcast.I hope you enjoy the conversation!NOTE: There are audio quality issues with this Skype-recorded conversation. Apologies. Just when I think I have it all figured out, technology rears it's ugly head once again. The good news is the quality improves after the initial 30 minutes of the conversation. I did my best to clean it up, but it is what it is. As always, I promise to continually improve, but these things happen. Go easy on me.Here's a little video from Thad from the Kona Inspired site to get you pumped.SHOW NOTES* Music That Moves: http://www.musicthatmoves.org* Sugarland Music: http://www.sugarlandmusic.com* Thad on Twitter: @MusicThatCares1: http://twitter.com/musicthatmoves1* Kona Inspired: ...
