Hello Friends! Join Donna and Paula as they chat with Paige King Johnson! Be sure to check out the interview on YouTube https://youtu.be/Ds_5FDX-s7E In a quiet North Carolina town 22 miles south of Raleigh, as a young 9-year-old girl, Paige King Johnson spent her summers under the crepe myrtles imitating the styles of Loretta, Patsy, Waylon, and Merle. Having a grandpa as her biggest fan also meant receiving the gift of her first guitar – a baby Taylor - and enrolling in lessons. After her grandpa passed, the bright-eyed dreamer carried on his memory by taking her newfound discovery to local fairs, festivals, and any other stage she was allowed to stand on. As she grew older, Johnson added “opening act” to her resume, supporting chart topping artists like Scotty McCreery, Neal McCoy, Luke Pell, and James Otto. And with high school graduation came the realization that this was more than a hobby. The Angier native traded in horse pastures and back roads for the bright lights of Music City in 2015. Upon starting school at Belmont University for Music Business, Johnson honed in on the magic that had heavily influenced her as a child: the art of storytelling thru songwriting. “I started finding my own voice thru writing, becoming more confident, and owning the fact that my personal feelings and experiences were worth talking about, singing about, and putting on paper,” Johnson reflects. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/crazywomencountry/message

Episode was conducted as the COVID-19 quarantine got underway Independent country artist Paige King Johnson moved from her native North Carolina to Nashville to pursue her songwriting and singing dreams. She has hung out at the famous Bluebird Café and has opened for chart topping artists like Scotty McCreery, Neal McCoy, Luke Pell, and James Otto. Her current single, “Water Down the Whiskey” channels the sensitivity of Kacey Musgraves while dishing out the unapologetic nerve of Miranda Lambert. Johnson's confident ownership of her craft is a direct result of the compelling female staples she grew up on — females who have at times strayed from the mainstream path to carve their own. With a heartfelt conviction to write genuine songs she can be proud of for years to come, Johnson is ready to go down any path that calls her name – as long as she can walk it in her favorite pair of boots. Paige King Johnson chats with Buddy Iahn and Matt Bailey about her career, aspirations and what she's been doing back home to pass the time during the COVID-19 quarantine. As she grew older, Johnson added “opening act” to her resume, supporting chart-topping artists like Scotty McCreery, Neal McCoy, Luke Pell, and James Otto. And with high school graduation came the realization that this was more than a hobby. The Angier native traded in horse pastures and back roads for the bright lights of Music City in 2015.  Upon starting school at Belmont University for Music Business, Johnson honed in on the magic that had heavily influenced her as a child: the art of storytelling through songwriting.“I started finding my own voice through writing, becoming more confident, and owning the fact that my personal feelings and experiences were worth talking about, singing about, and putting on paper,” Johnson reflects.

With the aggressive acoustic bass, second-line intricate drumming and soaring brotherly harmony, the Wood Brothers have become a mainstay of roots and Americana music. What began well over a decade ago as a casual and personal initiative to spend more time together as brothers took on a life of its own and has grown steadily from listening rooms to a recent debut at the Ryman Auditorium. It was an experiment with potent inputs. Oliver had spent years on the blues circuit, first with band leader Tinsley Ellis and then as an architect of the horn and percussion heavy band King Johnson. Chris became one of the most famous and acclaimed bass players in the world with the remarkable progressive jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood. Drummer Jano Rix came aboard full time about five years ago.  The Wood Brothers are aptly named - sturdy, fine grained, organic and deeply rooted. Oliver and Chris join Craig for a conversation about their history and the new album One Drop of Truth.

In 2006, brothers Chris Wood (upright bass) and Oliver Wood (guitars) joined forces after years of playing (respectively) with Medeski, Martin and Wood and King Johnson. They eventually added a third member in drummer and all-purpose instrumentalist Jano Rix. "Chris and I had such a great time playing together and realizing that we’ve been doing the same job for the last 10 years. I think that was a turning point, we realized that we wanted to do this together. So we started writing songs together and it turned into something more,” Oliver told The Daily Gazette in Schenectady, N.Y. The most recent result of their collaboration, 2015’s “Paradise,” digs into how our longing for fulfillment ironically keeps it just out of reach. “That’s why we chose that image of the donkey and the carrot (for the album cover),” the band told David Dye on the World Cafe. “I don’t know for sure, but sometimes we think it’s only when you give up on trying to get rid of your desire that you find salvation. You just accept it, so in a way that’s what the image can express.” The trio’s ongoing Wheels of Soul Tour has them playing alongside Tedeschi Trucks Band and Hot Tuna, which Oliver said is winning them new fans who truly value their music. "It’s when people come up to you and say ‘Wow, you really got me through a tough time’ or ‘Your concert made me so happy,' you realize that there’s healing powers to the music and that there’s compassion in the music that really connects people,” Oliver told The Daily Gazette. "It’s not about the glory, it’s about the connection.” Setlist: Chocolate on My Tongue  Keep Me Around - interview - Pay Day Twitsted For more on the Wood Brothers visit thewoodbros.com For more Lounge Acts visit wcpo.com/LoungeActs

THE WOOD BROTHERS began as something of a side project between Chris Wood (Medeski Martin & Wood) and brother Oliver (Tinsley Ellis and King Johnson) in 2006.Adapting the blues, folk and other roots?music sounds they loved as kids into their own evocative sound and twining their voices in the sort of high?lonesome harmony blend for which sibling singers are often renowned, it's become quite clear that The Wood Brothers is indeed the main act. With the addition of drummer Jano Rix, the band have become a stalwart on the Americana scene and "Masters of Soulful Funk" (Paste Magazine). 'Paradise' is the band fifth album and it's their most sophisticated and rocking work to date. THE CLAUDETTES create their own fanatical fusion of blues and soul-jazzlike Ray Charles on a punk kick. Think The White Stripes and Black Keys brandish with a piano instead and fronted by Nigerian-American singer/dancer Yana who sings in french. File under: post-burlesque? Neo-vaudeville? Cosmic cartoon music? You've never seen an a band quite like this. WoodSongs Kid: Annette Vogts is a 14-year-old fiddle champion from Wilmington, Delaware.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

In this episode, Oliver Wood drops in at The Henhouse to talk about the evolution of the Wood Brothers, his early experiences playing in rock and blues bands, being on the road with Tinsley Ellis, and recording with a 14-year old Derek Trucks. While his brother Chris was off starting Medeski, Martin and Wood, Oliver's band King Johnson was touring all over the US. When they finally reconnected as brothers and musical partners, the Wood Brothers recorded a string of killer acoustic and electric albums that draw from blues, soul, funk and jazz. We hear about all that from Oliver, and hear some of the songs that influenced him, and we also grab a couple of axes and have at it on an old blues number and a Wood Brothers tune...
