The comforting rhythm of routine can be just as enchanting as the electric buzz of a live event, as Mel, Apple, and I reminisce about the post-Sphere event bliss and the quirky sprout-hiding antics of our pals Meg and Sean. This week we're grooving to the soundwaves of International Orange, whose sophisticated beats are the perfect backdrop to our tales — from a virtual listening party to their upcoming New York gigs, we've got the scoop on why this band is a must-see for fans of funky vibes akin to Medeski, Martin and Wood. Experience the thrill of a live music journey with us as a fan calls in to rave about the Disco Biscuits' tour, sparking reflections on our insightful interview with Barber and the transformative power of their performances. The conversation then sails into the choppy waters of Grateful Dead-centric festivals, pondering the future of these iconic events as we speculate on the potential rise of more intimate, community-driven gatherings. Join us for this candid exploration of resilience in the music scene, personal milestones, and the strangely elastic concept of time that stretches and contracts in the wake of the pandemic. What up?Back with another solo episode, and this time we're checking out Medeski, Martin, & Wood's 1996 release, Shack-man.It's an all-time fave, and I had a blast diving in to it.Thank you for stopping by. Hi.I'm Blair Johnson, and I host this thing.Normally I'm writing these deals up about the episode's guest; today I don't have to do that.I will anyway, though. Just for grins.I'm a son and a brother and a dad and an uncle and a pretty big, goddamn nerd. The point of this podcast is to chat with people about some of their favorite music. So, today, I chat with you about one of my favorite albums, Play Pause Stop by Benevento/Russo Duo.It came out in 2006, features nine tracks, and runs for just under 50 minutes. It's remarkable, incredible, emotion-packed, and a bona fide bit of badassery. Two dudes, a handful of gear, and no words were more than enough to paint the marvelous story this picture tells. Please join me for the 15 minutes it takes to explore a handful of excerptions from this tremendous record. Thank you for stopping by.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to any of the audio snippets. The intro piece comes from Medeski, Martin & Wood's, "Bubblehouse" off of their Shack-Man (1996) LP, c/o Gramavision Inc. JT Bates is preparing for a show on Monday August 14 with Todd Clouser and John Medeski. JT Bates connected with Sean from the Afternoon Cruise to talk about what it's like to play with Medeski and Clouser and what they plan to bring to the stage of Icehouse on Monday, August 14.
It's the John Tait episode of Badass Records! That's right. It's #76. Only this conversation had nothing to do with former Kansas City Chiefs, B.Y.U. alum, or left tackles at all. Nope. This one's all about Beers. Jason Beers.Yes, the banjo-wrangling, bass-playing, prolific writer/recorder of music was kind enough to give of his time and swing by for a chat about gigging, releasing material, and -- of course -- a few of his favorite records. Those were these:The Doors, self-titled (1967)Ragin', Full-On (1986), fIREHOSENomeansno's Wrong (1989)28 Big Ones (2000), Bill DoggettDwight Diller's O Death! (2015)Whether you like our chat or not, Jason's bandcamp can be found here, and please do visit it, if for no other reason than to see the music-cranking machine that he is. In all seriousness, give some of his stuff a listen. You won't regret it. And you can of course follow him on social media.Final token plug: My Web site has a Merch' page.There. I said it.Thanks for stopping by.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the promo/intro/outro audio. They are all clips from one song. That song is called, "Last Chance to Dance Trance (Perhaps)." It's from a record called Friday Afternoon in the Universe by the trio, Medeski, Martin & Wood. That album -- in case you were wondering -- just might be the pinnacle of badass records, and it appears here c/o Rykodisc Inc.

If I've seen 80 Phish shows, I've seen at least half of those with one of the best dudes I've ever known, Jake Watson. He moved from KC to Charleston a few years back, but I was lucky enough to nab a few hours of his time on a recent visit back home, and he was kind enough to spend some of that time with me recording Episode #67.In addition to discussing the most-excellent human being that Jake is, we chatted about a few of his favorite records over the years, and they are these:Rain Dogs, Tom Waits (1985)Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)Paul's Boutique, Beastie Boys (1989)Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend (1991)So, check out our conversation. Sammy Sanchez is back! This time, we dug in to the entire Tom Waits discography, and what a ride it was.Sammy's first appearance on Badass Records was on Episode #44, in which we discussed a little LCD Soundsystem, a little Pink Floyd, and a little Tom Waits. And during that conversation, it occurred to me that I needed a Tom Waits fan with whom to geek out. And you know what? Sammy was game! Here's the list of what we covered:Closing Time (1973)The Heart of Saturday Night (1974)Nighthawks at the Diner (1975)Small Change (1976)Foreign Affairs (1977)Blue Valentine (1978)Heartattack and Vine (1980)Swordfishtrombones (1983)Rain Dogs (1985)Frank's Wild Years (1987)Bone Machine (1992)The Black Rider (1993)Mule Variations (1999)Alice (2002)Blood Money (2002)Real Gone (2004)Bad As Me (2011)Sammy was just as fantastic this time around as he was a few months back, and I'll definitely have him back for another run through some artist's body of work. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to get this off the ground, and thankful that it's still got a pulse. So thank you for stopping by and giving Episode #66 a listen/view. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with musician trumpeter, slide trumpeter, arranger/composer and bandleader from New York City, Steven Bernstein. Steven is best known for his work in The Lounge Lizards, Sexmob, Spanish Fly, and the Millennial Territory Orchestra. He has released four albums under his own name on John Zorn's Tzadik Records and he has performed with jazz giants including Roswell Rudd, Sam Rivers, Don Byron, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as musicians ranging from Aretha Franklin to Lou Reed, from Linda Ronstadt to Digable Planets, from Sting to Courtney Love. Steven was a member of Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble band, playing in Helm's Woodstock home, as well as touring with the band. As an arranger he has written for Bill Frisell, Rufus Wainwright, and Elton John, just to name a few. He has composed for dance, theater, film and television, and with composer John Lurie, arranged the scores to many feature films, including Get Shorty. While Steven is prolific with his output, this episode centers on two of his projects, Sexmob, which just released a terrific new album called The Hard Way, and The Millennial Territory Orchestra, which recently released four excellent records, in one day, on the Royal Potato Family label. Sexmob's latest release is a bit of a departure for the band, as with producer Scotty Hard at the board, The Hard Way skews decisively electronic. On it, Hard's beats and soundscapes provide Steven, saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and acoustic/electric drummer Kenny Wollesen, all the stimulus they need for further compose and fearlessly reinvent. With each offering, and certainly with The Hard Way and its rich electro-acoustic groove canvas, Steven and crew reveal a modernizing impulse, but also an equally strong foundation in the roots of jazz and American song. Funky, bluesy, with a tattered dissonance conjured up by Krauss Throaty saxophone tone, the distinctive wail of Steven's rare horn, and the swagger of Scherr and Wollesen's rhythm section grind, Sexmob continues to chart new paths in 21st-century creative music. In this episode host Michael Shields and Steven Bernstein talk about Sexmob's new direction sonically found on The Hard Way while exploring the production process behind this captivating work of art. They converse on producer Scott Hard's influence on the album, the unique art house label that The Hard Way was released on called Corbett vs. Dempsey, and the four albums Steven recently released with The Millennial Territory Orchestra. They even discuss Sexmob's forthcoming tour with Laurie Anderson, the many “gifts” Steven received in his career from renowned producer Hal Willner, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. You'll also hear them discuss meditation and finding your ideal mental space, how all the different flavors of NYC music inspire DJ Logic, spinning records on vinyl vs. digitally, and why he feels like he comes from outer space.DJ Logic is one of the world's most accomplished turntablists. He is widely credited for introducing jazz into the realms of hip–hop, and is considered by most as a highly-respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. Since his emergence in the early nineties amidst the Bronx hip-hop scene, the New York City based deejay has amassed a veritable mountain of collaborations, including a full-fledged band with members of Blues Traveler (The John Popper Project ft. DJ Logic), a trio with Steve Molitz & Freekbass (Headtronics), and collaborations with artists ranging from the likes of Bob Weir, John Mayer, Medeski Martin and Wood, Carly Simon, Jack Johnson, Vernon Reid, Mos Def, and many more. While the context of his work may vary, DJ Logic's spinning skills are certifiably beyond reproach.-----------*DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. For John Medeski, music has always been about healing. "Music just kind of sucked me up," he says. "For me having music was a great way to deal with the hard things in life. "Best known as one-third of the avant-garde jazz / funk trio Medeski, Martin & Wood (aka MMW), Medeski began playing piano as a kid, growing up in Florida. By high school, he was sitting in with the likes of Jaco Pastorius and Mark Murphy. He lived in Boston for college, and then in New York in his 20s. But Medeski was always drawn to nature. "I learn a lot by being around things humans couldn't create," he says. "Like trees and mountains. I just don't think humans are that clever or that important." Despite his love of the natural world, John is an innovative electronic (or at least electric) musician. He twists and squeezes the sound of his keyboards — distorting, filtering and processing the instruments to find unusual and sometimes otherworldly textures. Maybe that's why he lists NASA's recording of a black hole at the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster as one of his favorite recent musical discoveries. Medeski is a highly collaborative musician: in addition to MMW, he has been a part of numerous musical collectives including The Word, Mad Skillet, Hudson, Saint Disruption, and multiple John Zorn projects. We spoke recently about the healing power of music; what attracted him to music as a boy; his creative and professional development; and the moment in 1996 when MMW discovered their jam band audience. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

John Medeski is nothing short of a legend. He broke down barriers as one third of the revolutionary jazz trio Medeski, Martin, and Wood, bridged gaps as part of The Word with North Mississippi All Stars and Robert Randolph, and worked with luminaries in music across genre. Medeski, Martin, and Wood Medeski's latest project is Saint Disruption, a collaboration with musician, scientist, and folk healer Jeff Firewalker Schmitt. Schmitt and Medeski first met in the Amazon jungle where Medeski was seeking relief from debilitating cluster headaches. Saint Disruption's debut album Rose in the Oblivion was released on April 8, 2021 and their latest release, a cover of John Lennon's “Imagine” featuring Warren Haynes on guitar just dropped. I have been a fan of Medeski, Martin, and Wood for almost twenty years so this is a dream opportunity.

We're honored to have Jeff Firewalker Schmitt on No Simple Road this week! It's not every day that No Simple Road can bring you an individual that at 14 had started college. By 15 he was running a research lab with a famous scientist and was being published in prestigious academic journals. Now, based in Asheville, NC, Jeff is a noted scientist, holds a PhD from Oxford, is a Chinese martial Arts expert, practices Peruvian Folk medicine and is one half of the new band Saint Disruption along with improvisational titan John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood). The two met in a chance encounter while both in the Amazon jungle. Jeff holds a long list of musical collaborators from the former King Crimson drummer Michael Giles to spoken-word poet Cactus to REM's producer Mitch Easter. Schmitt is also a founding member of the Wheel Theater Company led by Juilliard and Moscow Art Theater artist Felix Ivanov. We get into his chance meeting with Medeski in the jungle, how synchronicity and connection played a huge part in the creation of Saint Disruption, how he started on his extremely incredible path of learning and mysticism, and so much more I can't even type it out!
