John writes "I served as a US Marine from 1999 – 2003. While I was in I was stationed at Kings Bay Naval Sub Base in southern Georgia. I was part of a CQB (close quarter battle) team and was a DM (designated marksman). As a DM I carried a M40A3 (308) and a M9 (9mm pistol). While serving at Kings Bay, I was called into my Platoon Commanders office prior to my team going to the LA (limited area). My Platoon Commander informed me that there were reports coming from lake D (a lake on base approximately 400 yards from the LA) of a wild animal being aggressive towards campers around the area. He asked me if I had a tree stand and ordered me to go to Lake D instead of the LA. He told me a DM from team 2 would take my spot in the LA. He said I was to locate, close, and destroy the animal and not to come back until I did. I ran back to my house and grabbed the necessary supplies, my hooch, tree stand, food, and water and headed to the north east side of Lake D. I had fished this lake several times and knew of a game trail closest to the LA that butted up to swamp land and the Saint Mary's river. I arrived around 0900hrs and set up camp. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA on nuclear war and expertise, published by bean on August 28, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I believe that there may be systematic issues with how Effective Altruism works when dealing with issues outside the core competence of its general membership, particularly in areas related to defense policy. These areas are complex and unlike many fields EA operates in, are often short of good public-facing explanations, which may make them hard for outside researchers, such as those from EA organizations, to understand in short order. This raises the possibility of getting basic, uncontroversial details wrong, which can both render analyses inaccurate and ruin the credibility of EA with experts in the field. A bit of background: I've been fascinated by the defense world for over 20 years, and have spent the last 5 working for a major defense contractor. I write a blog, mostly covering naval history, at navalgazing.net, and it was this work which brought me into contact with what appears to be the most in-depth evaluation of nuclear war risks by EA, work conducted by Luisa Rodriguez for Rethink Priorities. Unfortunately, while this was a credible effort to assess the risks of nuclear war, unfamiliarity with the field meant that a number of errors crept in, ranging from the trivial to the serious. The most obvious are in the analysis of the survivability of the US and Russian nuclear arsenals. For instance, when discussing the sea-based deterrent, the article states that "[America's] submarines' surfaces are covered in plastic, which disperses radar signals instead of reflecting them." This is clearly a reference to the anechoic tiles used on modern submarines, but these are intended to protect from sonar, not radar. This probably traces to the source used, an article that was confusingly written by someone who clearly doesn't know all that much about submarine design and ASW sensors, but it is exactly the sort of error which flags an article as being written by someone who doesn't really know what they're talking about. But that's merely a nitpick, and there's also a very basic flaw with the assumption that nearly all of the warheads aboard SSBNs will survive. While I completely agree that any submarine at sea is nearly invulnerable (and am in fact rather more skeptical than some of the sources that improved technology will render the seas transparent) a substantial fraction of the SSBN force is in port, not at sea. The US attempts to minimize this by providing each submarine with two crews and swapping them out, but even with this, each operational submarine still spend about a third of its time in port between patrols. (It will spend more time in overhauls, but sending ships to the yard with missiles aboard is considered bad form, so those warheads probably won't count against the US total.) How these would fare in a war would depend heavily on the situation leading up to the outbreak of war. If Russia launched a surprise attack, the bases at Bremerton and Kings Bay would undoubtedly be the highest-priority targets. If there had been substantial warning, then most would likely have been ordered to sea to strengthen the US deterrent. The description of the strategic bomber force bears little connection to the reality of said force and contains even more jarring errors, such as describing the bombers as "air-based". The second paragraph begins with the following statement: "While many strategic bombers are concentrated at air bases and aircraft carriers, making them potentially convenient to target, early warning systems would likely give US pilots enough time to take off before the nuclear warheads arrived at their targets and detonated." Every part of this sentence is wrong. While the US Navy did operate aircraft that were at least arguably strategic bombers, the...
Catholic Workers – students of peace activism – knowers of Father Berrigan and the Plowshares movement – are already aware that this week was the fourth anniversary of the Kings Bay Plowshares action protesting the U.S. military's nuclear stockpile. It is also the week that Martin Luther King was assassinated, over three decades ago. Less than a year before he was murdered, Dr. King addressed the National Conference of New Politics and argued that the American society was spoiled by 3 evils – Racism, Materialism and Militarism.Three Evils of Society: Racism, Materialism, and MilitarismThis week -- sitting on the edge of the Peace Statue at the Isaiah Wall across from the UN, I spoke with three Catholic Workers who participated and went to jail for cutting through the fence of the largest and most lethal submarine base in the world at Kings Bay, Georgia. They spilt their blood from baby bottles and hung banners calling for nuclear disarmament -- Martha Hennessy - Clare Grady - Mark Colville. We spoke at the end of their day-long walk which started at Riverside Church where MLK had delivered his “3 Evils of Society” speech in 1967. Their walk was organized by the Kings Bay Plowshares 7 group, Ellen Grady and Anthony Donovan. Also, I spoke with Mary Yelenick -- Main Representative at the United Nations for Pax Christi International and a member of the NGO Working Group on the Security Council. As the war drums are beating and as New Mexico Archbishop urges nuclear disarmament, we wanted to replay this interview with Father Patrick O'Neill. Indigo radio interviewed Patrick O'Neill who is just about to serve a federal sentence for breaking in to the Kings Bay naval base in Georgia with his comrades to protest against the trident missiles. Trident missiles are housed on submarines at Kings Bay ready to be deployed to start a nuclear war. Listen to Patrick recollect the history of this movement and why he is willing to go to prison to protest against the Trident Missiles.
Clare Grady started her prison sentence on February 10. She is one of the Kings Bay Plowshares 7 who entered the Trident nuclear submarine base in Georgia almost three years ago on April 4, 2018, to nonviolently and symbolically disarm omnicidal nuclear weapons. We talk to her sister, Mary Anne Grady Flores, about the plowshares movement against nuclear weapons and the effort to convince public pension funds and other to divest from nuclear weapons. By Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Radio Network.
Martha Hennessey, a peace and Catholic Worker activist who is a granddaughter of Dorothy Day, was part of the Kings Bay Plowshare 7 that participated in a protest against nuclear weapons at a Naval Base in Georgia She was recently sentenced to 10 months in prison for the protest. With Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Radio Network.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Anti-nuclear, anti-war – the Kings Bay Plowshares 7. These Catholic Peace Activists performed a peaceful action protesting the nuclear weapons aboard Trident nuclear submarines at the Kings Bay Naval Base in Georgia, 38 miles from Jacksonville, Florida. They were arrested, tried, and found guilty on three felony counts and one misdemeanor. Now, nearly two years after the action took place, they are still awaiting sentencing. We talk with Martha Hennessey and Patrick O’Neill (71) about the Plowshares Movement, their religiously-based dedication to peace, how the Kings Bay action was planned and executed, and what happened the night they did it — April 4, 2018, the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s death. Then we learn what has happened to them since the trial. On October 24, 2018, all seven were found guilty of three felony charges and one misdemeanor, which could lead to 20 or more years of imprisonment for each of them. Sentencing has been delayed almost two full years because, according to them, it’s an extension of the cruelty with which the government has treated them, and punishment that cannot be claimed as “time served” once they are sentenced.NOTE: I’m not often moved to tears by my Nuclear Hotseat interviews, but this one really got to me.WHAT YOU CAN DO: The Kings Bay Plowshares 7 request the following actions be taken by listeners to Nuclear Hotseat: Sign the petition asking for leniency from the court Write a letter to Judge Lisa Godbey Wood, requesting leniency for the protestors. On this week's episode of the Great Loop Radio podcast, we'll discuss bills filed at the Florida Statehouse to ban overnight anchoring in the Ortega and Cedar Rivers in the Jacksonville area, with an amendment to also ban overnight anchoring in Crystal River and Kings Bay. Our guest is Jerry Paul with Capitol Access, who has been representing recreational boaters in Tallahassee for several years. Jerry will walk us through the history of anti-anchoring bills in Florida and give us the status of the current bills. He'll also give details on what boaters can do to help prevent these bills from passing.
In April of last year, seven Catholic activists broke into the naval submarine base in Kings Bay, Ga., home to several nuclear-armed submarines. Inside, they carried out nonviolent actions to protest the U.S. nuclear weapon’s program: They spilled their blood on the property, beat weapons with hammers and put crime-scene tape around the base. All seven were arrested, convicted and await sentencing. One of those Catholics was Martha Hennessy. Martha is the granddaughter of another Catholic peace activist: Dorothy Day. We ask her how she prepared spiritually for the protest, how her grandmother has shaped her faith and what she thinks about the state of Catholic activism. In Signs of the Times, we discuss the U.S. drone strike that killed a top Iranian military leader and how Catholic leaders are (and aren’t) responding.
Vin Diesel er parodisk tøff i premierefilmen xXx: Return of Xander Cage. The Rules for Everything er sannsynligvis årets mest originale norske film.

Michael Lusk, an 18-year veteran of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the new project leader of Okefenokee and Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuges. He begins his new duties on September 22, 2013. “Michael has worked for the National Wildlife Refuge System during most of his Service career,” said David Viker, Chief of the Services Southeast National Wildlife Refuge System. “He has successfully dealt with many controversial projects throughout the country, including managing manatees at the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Florida and border issues at Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. His varied experiences prepared him for the challenge of managing the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge Complex, our largest in the eastern United States.” In his previous position, Lusk managed the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex in central Florida. As manager, he facilitated the purchase of Three Sisters Springs, part of the Kings Bay manatee sanctuary, and coordinated with local businesses and organizations to create a management plan. Lusk and his staff also educated visitors about the proper way to interact with manatees in Kings Bay through a Manatee Manners video and kiosks at each entrance to Kings Bay. In cooperation with the Tampa Bay Refuge Friends Group, Lusk also led an ongoing Save the Egmont Key initiative supported by more than 20 local groups. Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge is a small, barrier island, situated at the entrance to Tampa Bay, which is threatened by erosion.
