POPULARITY
With more health experts than ever, we have more complexity and confusion about what it actually takes to be healthy in 2025. My podcast guest today helps to dispel myths and mysteries by using data to examine bio-individuality in real time. We talk about using smartwatches, smart rings and other wearables to track stress levels through observing Heart Rate Variability (HRV) - and how this can help your health goals. Dr. Torkil Færø is a GP and emergency physician, documentary filmmaker, author and photographer. Over a 26-year career as a freelance doctor, he has worked all over Norway, had hundred thousand consultations and thus gained a unique picture of the diseases that plague us. He learned that the cause is most often found in the stresses our lifestyles place on our bodies. When Torkil's father died at 73, he realized that he had to change his own lifestyle. Being 40 pounds overweight, under-trained, over-stressed, under-slept and drinking alcohol daily, he learned that this lifestyle could deprive him of decades. Using wearables he found a way to track and regulate his nervous system and physiology. Tune in to learn about the practical and accessible way to read your body's signals to create wellness. He breaks down how lifestyle factors—including stress, diet, alcohol, exercise, cold therapy, and sunlight exposure—affect HRV and the autonomic nervous system. We discuss:
What if you could track your body's readiness, optimise recovery, and boost your overall health—just by measuring one key metric? In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Torkil Færø, author of The Pulse Cure, to explore the power of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). While many athletes use HRV to fine-tune their training, Dr. Torkil takes a broader approach—one that puts health first. And as I've learned over the years, when your health is in a great place, performance becomes much easier to optimise. We dive into: ✅ Why HRV is for everyone, not just athletes ✅ The biggest causes of stress (and how they're stealing your energy) ✅ Why taking control of your health is essential—especially after 40 ✅ The benefits of sunlight, cold therapy, and deliberate breathing If you're looking for simple but powerful ways to improve your health, performance, and resilience, this episode is a must-listen!

Have you ever wondered how much your body is telling you—and what you might be missing? Could looking at one more metric from your wearable device, like heart rate variability (HRV), unlock the secrets to better sleep, reduced stress, and improved overall health? In this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, Jenn Trepeck welcomes Dr. Torkil Færø, a GP, emergency physician, author of The Pulse Cure, and advocate for the transformative power of wearables in health optimization. Torkil shares his journey of exploring devices like Whoop and Garmin to uncover hidden stressors, track heart rate variability (HRV), and make meaningful lifestyle changes that dramatically improve health. From understanding the connection between HRV and chronic stress to identifying surprising factors like late-night meals and alcohol that impact sleep and recovery, this conversation dives deep into how wearables can enhance our understanding of the body. Dr. Færø also discusses HRV's role in improving PMS symptoms, offers actionable advice for boosting HRV, and explains why personalized data is key to unlocking better health. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [6:04] Dr. Færø explains why he began to focus on wearables[11:26] Humans can't sense our inner stress levels[14:55] Heart rate numbers are individual, and the connection between low heart rate and disease[23:34] Unexpected sources of stress and the sleep connection[29:21] How heart rate variability can improve PMS symptoms[32:45] Dr. Faero gives advice to see improvement in heart rate variabilityKEY TAKEAWAYS: HRV is a powerful tool for tracking stress and overall health. By using wearables to monitor HRV, individuals can learn how lifestyle choices—like diet, alcohol intake, and exercise—affect their bodies. A higher HRV typically reflects a restful, adaptive state, while a lower HRV may indicate chronic stress or other concerns. Notably, the focus is on individual patterns and baselines rather than comparing numbers with others, ensuring a personalized approach to health tracking.Wearables can uncover hidden stressors, like inflammatory foods or alcohol, that traditional medical training can overlook. By making informed changes, such as reducing alcohol intake, eating earlier dinners, and incorporating stress management techniques like breathwork or cold plunges. These tools serve as a modern extension of human senses, allowing users to “listen” to their bodies in ways evolution never equipped us for.Eating late or consuming alcohol can lower heart rate variability (HRV), resulting in less restorative sleep, even if total sleep hours are unchanged. To improve sleep quality, it's essential to wind down 1–2 hours before bedtime through calming activities like meditation, dimming lights, and avoiding late-night meals or alcohol. Additionally, keeping the bedroom cool (around 67–68°F) enhances sleep quality, as seen through wearable HRV data.Wearables provide insight into stress and health management. Devices like Whoop and Garmin track HRV, offering data on recovery, stress levels, and readiness for physical or mental exertion. This information can help prevent burnout by signaling when stress levels are unsustainable and encouraging proactive adjustments like yoga, better sleep habits, or dietary changes. For women, these wearables have even been used to manage PMS symptoms by identifying stress patterns and adjusting activities accordingly.QUOTES: [7:02] “I understood that there was a metric called heart rate variability that could show and track these improvements. So if I did something good for my health, that will be revealed in the heart rate.” Dr. Færø[10:36] “Heart rate variability essentially shows the time between heartbeats. We want that number to be higher, right? When that number is higher, there's greater variability between those heartbeats, it's a sign of the body being in a restful state where it can adapt to whatever is coming at us.” Jenn Trepeck[12:28] “I think the piece that's really important for all of us is to recognize is the body can be in a stress response, even when we don't intellectually register stress.” - Jenn Trepeck[24:35] “Heart rate variability and sleep are intimately connected.” - Jenn Trepeck[35:20] “Breathe slowly; nobody will notice if you're in a meeting, or if you're on a phone call. Slow down your breath, and close your eyes so that throughout the day, you calm your nervous system down.” Dr. Færø[37:06] “It's only when you get sick, that's when your health depends on your wallet.” Dr. Færø"It's like you have a speedometer for your physiology." - Torkil FærøRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramSheMD WebsiteSheMD on SpotifySheMD on YouTubeGUEST RESOURCES:The Pulse Cure - WebsiteTorkil Faero - InstagramTorkil Faero - FacebookTorkil Faero - LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Torkil Færø is a GP, emergency physician, documentary filmmaker, author, and photographer. Norwegian GP Dr Torkil Færø argues wearable devices that measure our heart rate and other health metrics, if used in the right way can be transformative in keeping us healthy and helping prevent disease in the future. In his book, The Pulse Cure, he explains why he thinks far more attention should be paid to a key metric which turns out to give a surprisingly accurate snapshot of our level of stress and overall health - and that is our heart rate variability or HRV for short. Torkil explains what it is and simple steps we can all take to improve our heart rate variability. Remarkably, it turns out that drops in our HRV may predict future illness and a higher heart rate variability has even been correlated with a better performing immune system. How do you know if you are stressed? Can you just feel it? Sometimes yes, but much of the time the stressors on the body work in insidious ways and may not be easily recognizable. However, in today's world of wearables and better access to health metrics, heart rate variability (HRV) has emerged as key in early detection and ongoing monitoring of stressors and health. Guest Dr. Torkil Faero, author of The Pulse Cure, joins Dr. Parker Hays to discuss what HRV is, its role as a proxy for stress, factors which affect HRV, and how to manage these factors to your benefit. Do you own a wearable such as a smart watch or Oura Ring? One that measures your heart rate? Host Amelia Phillips and GP Dr Torkil Færø discuss the fascinating data that can be really helpful on a health journey, from discovering how stressed we really are, to our sleep quality, or a measurement of our Vo2Max. While wearables may not be 100% accurate, the trends to track over time can be very telling. With all this data, what elements should we be tracking and how do we interpret the data in a meaningful and useful way? Dr Torkil has written a fascinating book The Pulse Cure: a book that delves into the research behind wearables, particularly around heart rate variability. I interview Dr. Torkil Færø, the author of the most recent (and, in my opinion, approachable and actionable) book on heart rate variability, The Pulse Cure. He's a Norwegian doctor with over 100,000 patient consults under his belt, one of the top Biohackers in his country, an "octo-glot" (a word I just invented for someone who speaks 8 languages), and he's on an expert consultant for our new flagship program, Anakainōsis.HRV may seem nerdy and complicated, but one thing is guaranteed when you start self-quantifying it; unexpected edifying findings. You'll quickly learn some surprising things about how the way you eat, drink, sleep, exercise, socialize, or work impacts the state of your autonomic nervous system and with it, your energy reserves, health, and - ultimately - your longevity. Whether you've just heard of HRV or you're well-acquainted with it, this book will guide you to the health transformation that awaits when start measuring what's now so easy and affordable to measure.0:51 About Dr. Torkil4:55 Life lessons from his time serving as a doctor in wartorn Angola11:47 What did the Angolans have that we lack in the developed Western world?13:20 Jedi mind trick for stress15:25 Memento mori lifehack18:13 My mindblowing flowstate experience with HRV training23:00 HRV: The pragmatic Biohacker's metric22:36 Unexpected edifying findings24:30 Breathwork a surprisingly potent Biohack30:37 "No free will" DISPROVEN by breathwork34:23 The best HRV wearable - with NO subscription service!38:38 Wearables vs HRV smartphone camera apps40:12 "Toxic comparison" to others51:38 Exercise beats the hell out of therapy for mental health?56:13 Inflammaging - is HRV training the cure?1:01:31 Biofeedback devices: Continuous glucose monitors vs HRV wearables1:06:09 The biohacker is pragmatic not puritanical1:10:25 The greatest challenge of the avaricious: slowing down1:13:09 The booze question1:18:07 The nicotine question: a case of bio-individuality1:23:05 About the new Anakainōsis programRead book review

Welcome to another episode of the Pain and Performance podcast. In this episode, I sit with Dr. Torkil Færø and we discuss the importance of heart rate variability (HRV) as a measure of overall health and well-being. HRV is the variation between heartbeats and provides insights into the autonomic nervous system and general physiology. By tracking HRV with wearable devices, you can make informed decisions about your lifestyle choices and manage your stress levels. HRV can also be used to assess the effectiveness of health changes, such as improving sleep, diet, and exercise. Additionally, HRV can indicate the impact of factors like alcohol consumption and menstrual cycles on overall health. In this conversation, Torkil Færø and I discuss how to interpret changes in heart rate variability (HRV) and what it means for an individual's health. We explore the various factors that can affect HRV, such as stress, sleep, alcohol consumption, and exercise. We also discuss the importance of social connections and creativity in promoting overall well-being. Our conversation highlights the need to prioritize sleep, cut down on alcohol consumption, and engage in activities that promote relaxation and creativity.Takeaways-- Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the variation between heartbeats and provides insights into overall health and well-being.-- Wearable devices can track HRV and help individuals make informed decisions about their lifestyle choices and stress management.-- HRV can be used to assess the effectiveness of health changes, such as improving sleep, diet, and exercise.-- Factors like alcohol consumption and menstrual cycles can impact HRV and overall health.-- Tracking HRV can help individuals identify patterns and make adjustments to improve their health and well-being. For today´s episode, David is joined by Torkil Faero, who is a Norwegian GP, author and medical genius who puts health and technology together. He's made films and is a photographer. His 1st book was about therapeutic photography and his 2nd, The Pulse Cure, is about balancing stress and optimising health. Torkil explains how you can use your pulse to spot when you are in a stressed state so you can take charge, make changes, and experience full health. To explore how to get unstuck on your mission, put your purpose into practice and convert your ideas into impact book a discovery call with David here https://calendly.com/david-peoplewithpurpose/30min KEY TAKEAWAYS Humans are built to tolerate stress and need it, but we are currently stressing for the wrong reasons. You need downtime, but if you just relax and never stress your body physically you become weak and sick. The most successful people rest well. Changes in your heart rate will help you to work out what stresses your body e.g. what happens when you drink alcohol. Often, it is food that makes you feel sluggish. Heart rate variability is connected to willpower. Having a purpose (Ikigai) is important for health. You do not have to exercise like an athlete to stay healthy many people are doing too much. BEST MOMENTS ‘We tend to stress too much and for the wrong reasons and are not able to relax properly,' ‘Start a conversation with your body. You might be surprised what it might say.' ‘So many people find out that it is the food.' ‘Invest enough of your day, so that you have your health.' Dr. Torkil is the author of The Pulse Cure and joins the show to describe how tuning into your heart rate variability can show you how your personal constitution reacts to specific stressors and help us tailor what is needed for optimal health.
