He has a degree in radiation biology from Bart’s Hospital in London and his doctoral studies at Imperial College in London and (briefly) Princeton University in the US concerned the radiological hazards of nuclear fuel reprocessing. Fairlie formerly worked as a civil servant on the regulation of radiation risks from nuclear power stations. From 2000 to 2004, he was head of the Secretariat of the UK Government’s CERRIE Committee on internal radiation risks. Since retiring from Government service, he has been a consultant on radiation matters to the European Parliament, local and regional governments, environmental NGOs, and private individuals. His areas of interest are the radiation doses and risks arising from the radioactive releases at nuclear facilities. In 2014, Dr. Fairlie published a scientific paper that compiled the results of 60 studies on child leukemia rates near nuclear reactors and blew the lid off the nuclear industry’s claim that living near a reactor is perfectly safe. He also exposes how the industry intentionally kept that information from the public until it was forced to reveal the data in 2012. Support Nuclear Hotseat at: www.nuclearhotseat.com

Nuclear Numnutz deja vu because, let’s face it, with nukes, everything old is new again, and again, and again… So we take a look back at 2018 through the lens of Nuclear Hotseat’s most popular feature, Numnutz of the Week. Listen to the “wacky” antics of the world’s most dangerous technology as it sails through: Japan’s hard work to “normalize” Fukushima and its radiation so the tourists dumb enough to show up for the 2020 Radioactive Tokyo Olympics will think that everything is AOK! US nuclear crews who opt for “high” crimes and misdemeanors – not once but twice! Ancient, decrepit or just irrelevent so-called “experts” opining to a transfixed mainstream media in support of nukes… when they have nothing to do with them The ongoing Fukushima Food Fight – whether it’s propaganda on the ground selling Fuku sake to New York hipsters or Japan taking South Korea and now Taiwan to the World Trade Organization to try to ram Fukushima fish down the throats of safety-conscious residents of other countries. Department of Energy playing word games to make us believe that high level waste is really low level waste – and when the citizens arise against you, with good cause, just invest your money in a good PR firm. Nuclear Regulatory Commission incompetence in letting reactors operate at full power during “snow cyclones” and hurricanes, forgetting that there’s no way to evacuate or get emergency crews on site because, hey, “snow cyclone” and/or hurricane. …and much much more! All of it leading to that Numnutz of all Numnutz for 2018, which is…Well, you’ll have to listen to find out! www.nuclearhotseat.com

Jay goes over the division of responsibility for nuclear weapons of mass destruction between Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Sandia Laboratory, and California’s Lawrence Livermore Lab. He then rips into Department of Energy for the lies and “theatre” surrounding claims of a “more-than-halfway-completed” so-called “clean-up” of LANL that ignores the vast majority of radioactive contamination… and ultimately is funding the new nuclear arms race. New Chris Busby website – www.chris.busby.exposed – tells the truth about this tireless British scientist. Uranium mining marks the start of the nuclear fuel chain and the deadly journey that element takes to become atomic weapons, nuclear reactors, and tons of highly radioactive waste that we do not know how to store safely for tens of thousands of years. On July 13 and 14, Nuclear Hotseat attended commemorative events for the 1979 Church Rock uranium tailings pond breach and spill, which dumped more than 94 million gallons of highly acidic radioactive water into the adjacent Puerco River. The contamination reached Sanders, Arizona, and was recorded at least 80 miles away. The spill has never been cleaned up, and even now, while it has been declared a Superfund site, it will take at least two years before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission finishes its review of the EPA’s clean-up plan – and clean-up can’t even begin until and unless the plan is approved.. And even that plan has come in for criticism by activists and community members. This very special Nuclear Hotseat is an audio montage of interviews with community leaders from Navajo Nation – most specifically the Red Water Pond Road Community, located adjacent to the spill site; commemoration event attendees; government officials; and activists from as far away as Japan. Chernobyl is again in the news as a result of the HBO series – but Nuclear Hotseat was there getting the truth about its impact on health years before that program even went into production. This is a classic Nuclear Hotseat episode, one of our most requested and downloaded: Alison Katz is a psychologist and sociologist who heads Independent WHO. The international watchdog group draws attention to the World Health Organization’s failure in its duty to protect those populations who are victims of radioactive contamination from Chernobyl and, later, Fukushima. The group has held a vigil in front of WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, five days a week, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., since April 26, 2007 – the 21st anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Given the HBO Chernobyl series visibility and popularity around the world, it seemed the right time to reintroduce this classic Nuclear Hotseat episode to an audience that either has not yet heard it, or wishes to have their understanding of Chernobyl’s devastating impacts refreshed. Originally recorded for Nuclear Hotseat #118, September 17, 2013.Chernobyl – Other Excellent Information Sources:Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future by Kate Brown. Superb accounting of the health devastation of Chernobyl, constructed from over three years of investigation into medical archives in eastern Europe.Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higgenbotham. NOTE: the author does a superb job reconstructing the horrors of Chernobyl, then goes full-on pro-nuke during the final chapter, citing statistics from only the pro-nuclear WHO, IAEA, and UNSCEAR. I recommend that you skip that chapter and read the rest of the book for its narrative of nuclear lies, miscalculations, cover-ups, and destruction of people and the environment. In particular, the description of the physical devastation of high level radiation exposure is comparable to the visuals provided in the HBO series.)

This Week’s Featured Interviews: Smithsonian accepts Mary Osborn’s Three Mile Island radiation/plant mutation collection. Mary Osborn, a long time member of Three Mile Island Alert, has been gathering flowers, leaves and plants that show signs of fasciation – mutations that reveal the negative impact of radiation on their growth and reproduction since shortly after the 1979 meltdown. Her full collection has been accepted by the Smithsonian Institution to be preserved, digitized, and made available to the public. This is a HUGE win! We spoke on January 17, 2019. Scott Portzline of TMIAlert sprovides background explanation of what it took to get the Smithsonian to consider Mary’s collection – and how rare it is that they accept anything that is offered to them, making this acceptance a real score. He gives us an update on conditions at WIPP since its 2014 accidents closed it down, along with the intense political wrangling going on right now about changing regulations to allow WIPP to take high level waste it’s not designed to handle. We also go into the battle raging right now over the threat of the world’s largest radioactive waste dump being situated in New Mexico and/or New Mexico-adjacent in West Texas.
