Kaye and her family traveled from to the Pacific Northwest and eventually settled in White Salmon, WA. In order for them to have food on the table and a roof over their head, they had to work hard.   With all those mouths to feed and though at times there wasn't much to go around, they felt blessed because they had each other.Nothing could get in Kay's way.  Nothing stopped her from doing what  she wanted to do or what ever she had to do.  That said, the had to back up her decisions with a supporting argument. She thought things out very carefully and weighed her pros and cons, and then set her mind to it.She loved her son and was never afraid to show it. Bob shares many wonderful stories that exemplify his mother's love. And "she got knocked down a number of times in life, but she always got back up," according to Bob.  Kay was married twice, was excommunicated from the Catholic church after her divorce, got her pilots license while being the only woman in class and became a legal secretary  in her  50's. Bob refers to his mom as "a trailblazer."There are many more wonderful stories of Kay, that Bob  shares with me, on this episode of SHLTMM. The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

Decisions Made Easy Have you ever noticed how forward momentum completely stops when you can't make a decision? There's no doubt; that the ability to make a decision is a power skill worth developing. I learned mine from my Mom. I grew up in the small town of Manassas, Virginia and I couldn't wait to graduate and begin my life adventure. My focus was on becoming a top-rated morning radio host, making lots of money in a big market. But I had a problem... The day came for me to decide how to begin my career. I narrowed my school choice and had to commit to enrolling - and commitments can be scary. As excited as I was to begin, I was also confused. That's when my Mom stepped in with a solution. Mom was a Legal Secretary and pulled out a yellow legal pad she kept handy. She drew a line down the middle of the page from top to bottom. Oh, no. We're not going to do the old Pro and Con thing again? That never works! Have you ever tried to make a decision using a list of positives and negatives? It only causes more confusion. But that wasn't going to happen this time because Mom had something else in mind. She drew another horizontal line, from left to right, across the middle of the page. Then she said, "This is different. It's about what is going to happen when you make your decision. Try it." With that, I made a list of everything that WOULD happen if I DID commit and get myself moving in the top left of the page. On the top right, I made a list of what WOULD happen if I DIDN'T do anything. Then, things got interesting… On the bottom left of the page, I listed what WOULDN'T happen if I DID. I filled the bottom right with what WOULDN'T happen if I DIDN'T. Clarity emerged, the fear disappeared, and excitement took over.  If you find yourself needing to make a decision, you can sort out anything, break free, and build fast and massive momentum with those four questions. She then went on to enrol at CILEX Law School, completing further studies and graduating as a Chartered Legal Executive in 2022.This year, Gemma obtained her rights of audience and she is now ''on her feet'' in Court, as well as now being able to attend to clients at the police station.Alongside Gemma's busy career, she is also the Founder and Director of Women in Law Kent.  Her mission is to build a community for women to empower, support and connect women in the local area.

What are some of the skills a CCO needs to success navigate the compliance waters in any company? What are some of the top challenges CCOs have faced and how did they meet them? These questions and many others will be explored in this new podcast series. Over four episodes each month on The Compliance Life, I visit with one current or former CCO to explore their journey to the CCO chair. This month, I take things in a different direction as I host my first non-CCO compliance professional, Joya Williams and detail her journey in compliance. In Episode 1, we take a look at Joya's career leading to compliance. Joya started her work life as a legal secretary, working in the Houston legal community for many years. She moved into the corporate world, taking a corporate paralegal position inhouse with the Baker Hughes compliance function. At Baker Hughes, entered Center for Advanced Legal Studies paralegal program and attended classes at night to obtain her Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies.  Afterwards, she obtained her paralegal certification. It's Thanksgiving this week in the US and we've heard it can be a tricky time for families. So for this week we have Catherine Zukowski with a story that we hope will help with your Thanksgiving perspective.  Bio: Catherine Zukowski is a transplant from Chicago and with her husband has made downtown Los Angeles her home for over 8 years . A Legal Secretary for 22 years, she is now is an Office Manager for a large real estate development company responsible for a lot of the gentrification of downtown LA and creating affordable housing communities in the surrounding area. Catherine has been making jewelry for almost 20 years, and a practicing clairvoyant energy reader for a decade. Lynn's storytelling class is very much like an energy reading. She helps you strip away the story/energy that isn't yours and gets you to your core truths. It's been a brilliant and difficult process. Highly Recommended. Thank you, Lynn. YouTellYours.com was started by Lynn Ferguson after becoming embroiled in the storytelling community in Los Angeles. Lynn firmly believed that we all have stories to tell and so started teaching storytelling in Burbank. Since then we've confirmed that no only does everyone have a story to tell, but also that telling those stories enriches both the teller and the audience, creating connections and a sense of community. Our storytelling classes are available in Burbank, California with end of class storytelling events most months. Dealing with pain is one of the toughest thing to do. But did you know that you can make it easier to deal with pain through hugs and laughter? You can listen to the show at http://rockyourretirement.libsyn.com/deal-with-pain-through-hugs-and-laughter-episode-003 Joyce Leverich was working as a Legal Secretary for the corporate department of a large law firm.  Her friends were met at work.  Gradually she found that her back problems caused her to retire in her early 60s.   The pain was so great that she found it difficult to do anything.  Because of the pain she became depressed and wasn't sure what she was going to do to get out of her slump.  Not only that, but all of her friends were working, and she was home alone.  She went through a pain management clinic who taught her how to cope with the pain and how “getting out” is the most important thing to deal with depression.  She still deals with chronic pain, but she learned how to deal with pain through hugs and laughter. Socializing is a great way, according to Joyce, to deal with depression. After she moved to San Diego with her husband, she searched the Internet for social groups.  She found some couples groups, but also found a group that was specifically for women.  An opportunity arose that allowed her to take over that Meetup group that was floundering.  After taking over the group, she decided that she would have activities, and if even ONE other woman decided to join her in an event, she would get together and spend time with that woman. The group started off slow, and the first woman she met for coffee never came back.  Joyce was afraid that the group would end because of that, but she didn't despair.  She kept posting events, and the group flourished. She took that group and turned it into a massively successful, and very active woman's group that meets weekly.  Not everyone attends weekly, but all the members are active in the group. And they all deal with pain through hugs and laughter. Some of the pain is physical, and some of it is emotional.  Really, the group is about having friends and having fun! The group volunteers, has line danced, gone bowling, and do all kinds of things.  There are 20 or 30 women who help post activities.   A lot of women in the group deal with pain through using hugs and laughter. Learn how she grew the group in today's episode of Rock Your Retirement. http://traffic.libsyn.com/rockyourretirement/003_R_Joyce_Leverich_060212_IFinal.mp3 This article on Retirement Lifestyle first appeared on http://RockYourRetirement.com. ©2016-2017Deal with Pain through Hugs and Laughter
