On this episode of Antioch MFA Program's LitCit, host Amalia Mora chats with Lynn Ferguson, a self described "mongrel of the arts," whose career spans TV, radio, film, and stage. During this episode, they discuss Lynn's work as a writer and storyteller, self-forgiveness as a cure for writer's block, and why creating connection-often through the use of humor-motivates her writing. They talk about her debut collection of essays, Notes From The Valley, and they also share a lot of laughs-about cavemen, cults, and two things Lynn has fallen in love with: her dog, Arthur, and her new trailer named Bertha. This episode was produced by Michael Sedillo, and mastered by Ian Rodriguez and Bo Thomas Newman.
Just before year's end, James and Imo review Aardman/Netflix's 'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget' (2023), directed by Sam Fell and starring the voice talents of Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Bella Ramsey, Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks, Lynn Ferguson, David Bradley, and Miranda Richardson. Does the twenty-three (!) year wait for a sequel leave the critics feeling sunny-side up or is it rather over-egged? Alongside reflecting on the changes to the voice cast and politics of the movies, the two critics explore whether the original changed their eating habits... They'll be back in 2024 with even more overanalysis!

Lynn Ferguson brings some LA sunshine to the Plant Based Podcast this week as she sits down with Michael and Ellen to chat all things hay bales, chickens and the challenges of growing vegetables in the American climate. In part one, Lynn - a performer, comedy writer and actress – reflects on the highlights of her career, including her well-known role as Mac in Chicken Run. She also talks about how a spontaneous stand-up comedy gig with her brother landed her a job in LA, where she now lives – attributing her ‘go with the flow' mentality to all of her success. In part two, Lynn shares her vegetable growing journey and how hay bale leftovers from a party became an aid for growing her cucumber, rocket, egg plants and more – which came to be from a little advice from none other than Shia LaBeouf! She also reflects on her experiences with gardening during her childhood and shares the lessons she's learnt since living across the pond. Lynn also shares her tips for saving citrus trees, the struggles she's faced growing fig and her trick for getting rid of pesky earwigs. The grandson of a renowned bolero and mambo vocalist from Tabasco, Mexico, Asdru grew up in LA with music in his veins. His pursuit of Jazz and world music has lead to amazing pieces that get to the heart, address social justice issues, and get folks up on the dance floor. It's also led to Grammys, being a cultural ambassador for the US State Department and performing for the Obamas. We talk about his creative journey and the stories he conveys through music. Some of Asdru's musical touchstones we talk about include Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and Green Haze, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Charlie Haden, and Santana. In entertainment we talk about Drew Barrymore's Never Been Kissed, Yo Gabba Gabba, the Fantasy Island reboot, and NPR. Asdru's projects include Ozomatli (obviously), Abstrakto with Balthazar Getty, Trio Retro, and his own stuff including those T-shirts we mention. We talk about the story class we met in (again) by Lynn Ferguson and her own Hearthside Salon's episode. My story there. You can find Asdru on Twitter and Instagram. As always, you can find out more about PageCraft's screenwriting workshops and coaching here.
For Episode 75, Chris and Alex revisit the work of Aardman Animations, taking a look at their debut feature film Chicken Run (Peter Lord & Nick Park, 2000) whose narrative of meat pies and morality remains underwritten by the Bristol-based studio's signature stop-motion style and very British sense of anarchy. Joining them for this discussion of the art of poultry-in-motion is Chicken Run's very own Mac, the loveable Scottish genius engineer chicken voiced by writer, actress, and story coach and consultant Lynn Ferguson. Listen as the discussion turns to the Aardman community and how it functions within both industrial and narrative contexts; Chicken Run's tempering of the epic, and the spectacle of table-top production; vocal performance (in both animated features and video games), and the need to give audio ‘angles' to the animator; notions of Scottishness, discourses of nationality and fantasy storytelling; the power of ‘revolting' animation and collectivities of rebellion and resistance; and pop singer Chesney Hawkes.

Lynn Ferguson co-founded YouTellYours.com with her husband, Mark Tweddle, providing coaching in live performance storytelling in July 2015. The business has grown to include online tuition, a YouTube Channel now including coaching sessions for business and in solo show construction. She is also a big wig with The Moth. I need to hit her up for a hook up to share my story on The Moth stage! Check her out. She is good stuff. Text LEIGH33 to 44222 for one word to kick to the curb that will change your life! You grow up in school writing stories paying attention to the structure of the stories you’re telling. But when it comes to business, you may need to be doing just the opposite. Have you ever sat through a presentation that is packed full of statistics and numbers that it nearly puts you to sleep? We’ve all been there. Sometimes, no matter how passionate the presenter actually is, it gets drowned out by all of the numbers and statistics. And that’s because they are too hung up on the structure of the story rather than the story itself. Today, Lynn Ferguson, self-proclaimed “Entertainment Mongrel,” with her eclectic background as a comedy writer, stand-up comedian, playwrite, director, producer and sister of the former host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, helps you go beyond that structure and find the heart and soul in your business storytelling. Lynn says that in business, it all comes down to honesty. Successful stories come from a place of truth. If you are honest in your storytelling, people will care. It’s time you embrace your story and use it to dig deep and use your story to your business’ advantage.

This week's story is about love. But the storyteller isn't French or one of those European romantics… no he's a true romantic, he's Australian! So here's newcomer Ben Speed with his story about a big romantic lie that he's going to tell. Benjamin Speed is a composer and dreamer, whose greatest goal is to have music he's made shot out inside a spaceship as an example of artistic human endeavour for interstellar civilisations to discover. Besides music and film, he's obsessed with soccer, bicycles, watermelon, ginger and tea. And I laughing, especially at himself, as regularly as possible. http://www.benjaminspeed.com/ YouTellYours.com was started by Lynn Ferguson after becoming embroiled in the storytelling community in Los Angeles.
