On March 3, 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals made a significant move by placing the franchise tag on wide receiver Tee Higgins for the second consecutive year. This decision, confirmed by Higgins himself with a simple "tag" post on X, ensures that the 26-year-old star remains with the team for the 2025 season, barring a trade or a long-term extension by July 15. The tag guarantees Higgins a fully secured salary of $26.2 million, a 120% increase over his 2024 franchise tag earnings of $21.8 million, reflecting the NFL's formula for players tagged in consecutive years. For Bengals fans, this move keeps a key piece of their offensive puzzle intact, but it also raises questions about the team's long-term plans. Higgins, drafted in the second round in 2020, has been instrumental in transforming the Bengals from a struggling franchise into a perennial contender. With 4,595 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns over five seasons, he ranks among the league's elite receivers, even despite injury setbacks that limited him to 12 games in each of the past two years. His 2024 performance—73 catches, 911 yards, and a career-high 10 touchdowns—underscored his value to quarterback Joe Burrow and the offense, making him a prime candidate for a lucrative free-agent deal had he hit the open market. The Bengals' decision reflects a delicate balancing act. While they've expressed a desire to secure Higgins long-term, as emphasized by director of player personnel Duke Tobin at the NFL scouting combine, they also face pressing financial commitments. Ja'Marr Chase, an All-Pro receiver, is in line to become the league's highest-paid non-quarterback, and defensive end Trey Hendrickson seeks a hefty extension or trade. Tagging Higgins buys time, but negotiations remain distant, with reports suggesting he'd command over $30 million annually in free agency—above the tag's value. Speculation swirls about a potential tag-and-trade scenario, with some NFL insiders noting league-wide belief that Cincinnati might deal Higgins for draft capital if a long-term deal falters. This could replenish resources while addressing other roster needs. For now, Higgins stays put, a vital cog in a Bengals squad aiming to keep its championship window open. Yet, as the July deadline looms, the saga of his future—stay, sign, or trade—promises to keep Bengals Nation on edge.

Shoot us a Text. With only 3 Thursdays left in the year, we're covering how General Motors has shut down its robotaxi division. Plus, dealer sentiment is up now that we're past the election, and Google has announced a potentially massive breakthrough in quantum computing.General Motors (GM) has decided to shut down its Cruise robotaxi division after years of significant investment and high hopes. Once considered a $50 billion revenue opportunity by 2030, the move signals a shift in GM's strategic focus.GM shares briefly rose following the announcement, reflecting investor relief over reducing the estimated $10 billion spent on Cruise's development.Cruise employees were notified via Slack, linking to a press release titled “GM to refocus autonomous driving development on personal vehicles,” sparking frustration among the workforceGM plans to integrate some Cruise talent into its driver-assistance technology programs while doubling down on gasoline-powered trucks and SUVs, which remain its profit drivers.CEO Mary Barra defended the decision, stating: “We looked at the amount of money to deploy a robotaxi business and to maintain that business… it's quite a bit of capital. A robotaxi business is not GM's core business.”The latest Q4 2024 Cox Automotive Dealer Sentiment Index (CADSI) brings a wave of optimism among U.S. auto dealers, reflecting improving confidence in the industry despite lingering challenges in the current market. The market outlook index rose to 54, a substantial leap from 42 in Q3, marking the largest quarterly surge in CADSI history. Dealers credit political clarity and potential economic measures like tax rebates for the boost.Franchised dealers are more optimistic (index 50) compared to independent used-only dealers (index 39).The top concerns for dealers in Q4 2024 are economic conditions (56%), high interest rates (52%), weak market conditions (37%), the political climate (35%), and rising expenses (33%).“The recent resolution of political uncertainty...has cleared the path for a more optimistic outlook on future auto market conditions,” said Jonathan Smoke, chief economist at Cox Automotive.Google has unveiled Willow, its latest quantum computing chip, claiming a monumental breakthrough in error correction and computation speed. However, experts remain cautious, pointing out that quantum computing still lacks practical, real-world applications.Willow can solve a problem in 5 minutes that would take today's supercomputers 10 septillion years—far beyond the universe's age.Willow reduces errors exponentially as qubits (units of information in quantum computing, capable of existing as 0, 1, or a superposition of both simultaneously) scale, cracking a 30-year challenge in quantum error correction.Experts agree it's an exciting milestone but emphasize the need for a “ChatGPT moment” to unlockHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text. We're almost through the week, and we've got Steve Greenfield back with us today to help us understand why dealers are feeling a little pessimistic about Q3. Plus we'll discuss how Japan is investing heavily in EV battery production and have a little bit of nostalgia about a historic Mustang.Show Notes with links:Franchised dealers grew more pessimistic going into Q3, with a Cox Automotive poll revealing concerns about interest rates, the economy, and election uncertainty. The Dealer Sentiment Index fell below 50 for only the third time in its seven-year history, indicating negative expectations for the near future.Dealers rated their three-month outlook at 49, down from 52 the previous quarter, signaling waning confidence.Interest rates (67%), the economy (53%), and political uncertainty (49%) were the top concerns affecting franchised dealers.Jonathan Smoke said that with the exception of interest rates, today's economy suggests that the SAAR should be 17 million given demand. However, it currently sits at 15.4MProfitability also dipped, with dealers reporting a score of 43, well below pre-pandemic levels."To say that profits are today worse than they were before, I think, is thinking beyond new-vehicle gross margins and thinking about the other expenses that dealers have that are still being impacted by inflation and higher costs and higher interest rates, which make it very expensive to hold inventory," Smoke saidJapan is investing heavily to secure its electric vehicle battery supply chain, offering up to 350 billion yen ($2.4 B) in subsidies. The funding will boost production for companies like Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru and Panasonic, aiming to increase the nation's storage battery capacity by 50%.The combined investment from the four automakers, along with Japanese government subsidies, totals over ¥944.6 billion ($6.58 billion)The goal is to increase Japan's battery production capacity from 80 GWh to 120 GWh annually.Toyota is leading Japan's EV battery push by developing next-gen solid-state and performance lithium-ion batteries, with plans to start production by 2026, Subaru and Mazda will partner with Panasonic for cylindrical lithium-ion battery production, while Nissan plans to produce lithium-iron-phosphate batteries for mini-EVs by 2028."We hope these efforts will strengthen Japan's battery industry," said Ken Saito, Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.Bill Ford and Jay Leno took a trip down memory lane in a classic piece of automotive history—the original pace car from the 1964 Indianapolis 500. Erin Fletter had a long career in the restaurant business before starting an after-school enrichment program to teach kids how to cook at her daughters' school in 2011. Her cooking program became popular, and she improved and expanded it to become a paid program called Sticky Fingers Cooking. Soon, she had a sizable business with over 100 chef-instructor employees who conducted engaging classes daily in Denver. Her team created custom software to help manage their complicated operations, from enrolling students, coordinating instructors, and building relationships with schools to handling payments and payroll. The software grew slowly initially but eventually became a powerful system that helped them scale their business and run efficiently. Erin considered turning her business into a software company, as many tech-powered businesses do. Instead, they kept improving the software and expanding operations, serving over 100,000 students and thousands of schools and venues. Now Sticky Fingers Cooling is a fast-growing and successful franchise business with a software superpower. Quote from Erin Fletter, CEO of Sticky Fingers Cooking “Our business has a lot of logistics, coordination, and operations. Our own custom software, we call it the Dash, it takes about 85% of all operations off the table for humans. This enables our chef-instructors to connect with their students and our franchise owners and regional directors to focus on building relationships with schools and parents. “Over the years, we have been contacted by very large organizations like YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and other after-school enrichments about our software. They would see our automatic rosters getting texted and emailed at the venues that we were teaching in, and they asked, What are you using? What is this? And we told them, Well, it's our own software, sorry. “We had talked for years about selling our software as a white-label solution because the demand is there. We've had inquiries for the last 10 years. That was a direction we could have taken. “But I'm just laser-focused on Sticky Fingers Cooking. It's a very simple business, and our technology helps us do it incredibly well. We want to be the best at what we do. I didn't really want a diversion from the path of taking our business national through franchising.” Links Erin Fletter on LinkedIn Sticky Fingers Cooking on LinkedIn Sticky Fingers Cooking website The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. It's the first Friday in May as we talk about Rivian stepping up their presence in Normal, IL. We also cover the latest JD Power report regarding the service department as well as Cali taking aim at junk fees…for food.As Tesla cuts jobs, EV startup competitor Rivian is set to expand its Normal, IL plant, adding over 500 jobs to produce the new R2 crossover, leveraging a significant $827 million incentive package from the state. The Illinois deal is not a cash infusion, but includes $75 million from a deal-closing fund and $634 million in tax incentives over 30 years, with a commitment to maintain at least 6,000 jobs. This move diverts from an initial plan to build in Georgia, aiming for quicker market entry and saving $2.25 billion by consolidating production in Illinois. The company adds that it has invested $2 billion in Normal which has generated $3.9 billion of “value add” for the local economy. Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe said, "Gov. Pritzker has always been a strong advocate for providing economic opportunities for Illinois residents and business owners alike," J.D. Power's 2024 studies highlight aftermarket services gaining on franchised dealerships in customer satisfaction, driven by easier access and quicker service."This is a key opportunity for aftermarket providers to not only compete with franchised dealers on price but also to add customer value with a quicker and easier service experience," noted Leonard Martin from J.D. Power.Younger customers, particularly Gen Z, report lower satisfaction levels with aftermarket services; J.D. Power suggests enhancing advisor interactions to build trust and loyalty, emphasizing the potential for aftermarket providers to secure long-term customer relationships through satisfying service experiences.Providing photo or video documentation of recommended repairs significantly increases customer approval for the work: 51% of customers who receive such documentation proceed with the suggested repairs, compared to only 24% who do not receive this visual confirmation. However, franchised dealerships were rated as more trustworthy in areas such as utilizing technology to enhance service efficiency and their capability to handle complex vehicle repairs, showing higher customer trust and satisfaction scores in these specific aspects compared to aftermarket service providers.Starting July 1, California mandates the elimination of unexpected surcharges on restaurant bills, excluding taxes, requiring full disclosure of any fees in advertisements or menus.Diner opinions are mixed, with some appreciating the potential for a simplified billing process, while others worry about potential price increases as restaurants adjust to the new law.The law aims to prevent customers from double-tipping and paying for undisclosed fees, a practice especially common in San Francisco where service charges can be as high as 20%.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

It's Friday! As we close out the week, we're covering a push by VW workers to join the UAW, how dealers are choosing pessimism, and the buzz about peach fuzz.Show Notes with links:Crossing a notable benchmark, the UAW has crossed the 30% support threshold at Volkswagen's Chattanooga facility, signaling a major shift in its organizing efforts. Now that they've reached 30%, those who signed the cards will become more public to gain more support. If they reach 70%, it will trigger a vote. And don't be surprised if you see Shawn Fein show up. This progress is part of a larger push by the UAW to unionize 13 non-union U.S. plants, targeting nearly 150,000 employees across various automakers, including Tesla and Toyota.Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant has a history of narrow votes against UAW in 2014 and 2019, amidst strong opposition from local lawmakers. After the campaign, VW told employees, “We prefer to continue our direct relationship with you, working together as one team,” the New York Times reported at the time."Times have changed and our time is now," the UAW stated in a new video, highlighting their recent successes and motivating workers towards unionization.Cox Automotive's Q4 Dealer Sentiment Index reveals a growing pessimism among auto dealers, as they face a comedown from previously favorable market conditions.Franchised dealers expressed the worst market sentiment since the second quarter of 2020, with a current market rating of 49, reflecting a shift from heightened profitability to more normal conditions. The survey, including responses from 561 franchised and 475 independent dealers, indicates a significant decline in optimism, with a more pessimistic outlook for the upcoming quarter than the current one.Key challenges identified by dealers include high interest rates, economic concerns, and market conditions, with a notable shift away from previous inventory issues. From the AutoNews article: But Cox doesn't think a threat looms on the horizon. Instead, Smoke said it attributes the negative sentiment to "moving away from the best years" in dealer history. Sales won't be an issue. Dealers are lamenting being squeezed on pricing and profitability.Pantone has announced "Peach Fuzz" as its 2024 Color of the Year, symbolizing comfort, kindness, and tenderness, in contrast to the turmoil of recent years. The color marks Pantone's 25th anniversary of its Color of the Year program, which began in 1999.Collaborations include products like Motorola phones and Ruggable home items in Peach Fuzz shades.Pantone's choice reflects a year-long market study, finding peach tones in fashion, cosmetics, and home decor.Laurie Pressman of the Pantone Color Institute emphasizes the color's role in offering solace: "It's things that we're looking for that color can hope to answer."Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Jonathan Taylor sees the future in Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley's struggles to get paid, and he tweets about it! Colts offensive stats are impressive compared to those of the Chicago Bears, despite the Bears being around since the very beginning of the NFL. Cameron Boozer is the best high school player I've ever seen - and by the way, I did not see LeBron James play while he was in high school! Learn more about your ad choices. Jonathan Taylor extension this offseason would be idiocy. If he feels slighted, that's too bad! Paying an extra $5M that can be spent on an upgrade elsewhere just to make Taylor feel appreciated is madness! Colts with Texans in CBS Sports fifth and final AFC tier, and I'm not buying it! Pascal Siakam has one year left on a $37M deal, so trading longer term assets to get him for 82 games seems silly, doesn't it? NCAA Tourney will stick at 68 teams - for now! Title University of Hertfordshire Learning and Teaching Conference - Content Localization for UH Franchised Modules : Challenges, Lessons Learned, and Implications for Delivery Improvement Authors Prof. Wael Badawy, PhD, SIEEE, SACM; and Prof. Simon Jones, PhD, Dean of Business School, Abstract At University of Hertfordshire, student have the privilege of attending education programs and courses in partnership organisations in approx. 35 locations. Although the University of Hertfordshire's curriculum is designed in UK for UK/EU marketplace, it is delivered in country specific modes through the efforts of partnership academics to contextualise the learning materials. The challenges of delivering awards in international settings is not only differing cultures and learning environments, but also governing rules and regulations that determine the academic culture of those students. Graduates, as a product of the satellite-campuses, are preparing for opportunities both in country, the EU and potentially the UK, along worldwide regions. In each case there are different laws, regulations, practices, languages, cultures, etc. that will affect the individual's “work ready” potential. This presentation will demonstrate the effective use of pedagogies to localise the content does not compromise any modules' Indented Learning Outcomes. It will present lesson learned from Global Academic Foundation, Egypt; when transferring learning ensuring a dilution of the UK-centric curriculum and learning environment. The presentation will showcase success examples of exchange programs where both international students and UK based students enjoying education experience in both satellite and UK campus while achieves the same ILO and excel. The presentation will focus on the practices with the Information Technology Management for Business, in School of Business hosted by Global Academic Foundation in Egypt. However, it also provides a set of quantitive and qualitative measurable metrics to assess the localization components. Therefore, the practices is transferable to any other academic program to develop an agile-graduate that meets both requirements of UK / EU marketplace and local workforce.
What do you know!? FRANCHI$ED is back (sort of)! Jonathan & Ariane return to the driver seat to get back to their roots with the franchise that started it all, The Fast Saga (are they still calling it that?). Of course, we are talking about the new instalment of the super spy car racing series, FAST X.After going to space in the last film, you might wonder how the series could top itself? Well, we venture to the depths of the ocean to pluck out not one, but two Aquamen, add in even more new characters, blow up the Vatican, and just do a bunch of self-referential humour that basically lets everyone know, that you know, it's all a parody now. Oh, and you retcon your most beloved film in the series and start mysteriously bringing back more presumed dead characters. Death doesn't matter. Gravity doesn't matter. It's all vroom, vroom, NOS, explosions and smooth brain! It's time to get FRANCHI$ED...We just may be back for that long promised 3rd Season with the Twilight Franchise. Growing tensions between franchised dealers and legacy automakers over evolving sales models and vehicle service work are emerging as key issues in statehouses across the US this year. Several state dealer associations are backing legislation to amend franchise laws that govern the relationship between dealerships and the automakers whose brands they sell. Automakers argue that many of the laws governing the franchise system are outdated, add unnecessary costs and make it harder to adapt to changing market demands and customer expectations. Meanwhile, dealers aim to preserve their role in the sales model, and are pushing to prevent automakers from competing directly with franchised retailers. In the end, the dealers want to ensure that they remain central to the retail experience for consumers.Grab a copy of my book:https://partsmanagerpro.gumroad.com/l..."The Parts Manager Guide" - https://www.amazon.com/Parts-Manager-...Please remember to like, share and leave your comments.Podcasts are uploaded weekly.Visit my website for more!https://www.partsmanagerprof.com/You can find the full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNmnxGzDCuEIf you want me to continue making videos like these, please donate to our paypal account: paypal.me/partsmanagerpro00:14 intro00:31 Automakers and Dealers clash02:08 Dealer wants strengthened protection02:47 Dealer roles 03:40 Level playing field04:36 Challenge the status quo05:01 Ford Price gouging5:28 The Parts Manager GuideFair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Eric Bieniemy has been hired as the new offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders. He was also given the title as Assistant Head Coach. He left the Kansas City Chiefs as a 2 time Super Bowl winner. He also left the league's best quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, a first ballot Hall of Fame tight end in Travis Kelce and the #1 offense to come to Washington to a team with essentially a rookie 5th round quarterback, a depleted offensive line and an offense that hasn't ranked in the Top 15 in more than 5 years. So what are we to expect with Eric Bieniemy?
