Today, we're joined by veteran journalist and NewsNation anchor Leland Vittert, who has reported from the White House lawn to the battlefields of the Middle East. But now he's sharing a story no one has ever heard before—his own. In his powerful new book Born Lucky: A Dedicated Father, A Grateful Son, and My Journey with Autism, Leland opens up about his childhood struggles, the relentless dedication of his father, and how love, grit, and resilience shaped the man we see today on primetime TV. Leland, welcome—it's an honor to have you with us. 1. You've been on camera for years as a journalist, but this is the first time you've opened up about your personal story. What made now the right time to write Born Lucky? 2. The book really honors your father's role in shaping your life. Can you share a moment that captures his determination to never let you be defined by your diagnosis? 3. Growing up, you faced painful bullying and rejection. How did those experiences shape your resilience and your drive to succeed? 4. You describe your father quitting his job to essentially “coach” you through life. What were some of the unusual or even tough methods he used that ultimately paid off? 5. From not speaking as a child to anchoring a national news show—your journey is extraordinary. What do you think surprised people most when they learned your story? 6. Your book is both raw and hopeful. What do you want readers—especially parents and kids facing similar challenges—to take away from it? 7. James Patterson praised Born Lucky as “a beautiful, emotional, true story.” What has that kind of support meant to you personally? 8. Now that the book is out, how do you hope this changes the broader conversation about autism, labels, and what's possible? Growing up on the autism spectrum, Leland Vittert knew what it meant to be singled out. He was bullied by classmates, written off by teachers, even branded "weird" by a school principal. But his father never let his son be defined by autism and he never gave up on him. His dad understood a hard truth: the world wasn't going to adapt for his son, so his son would have to learn to adapt to the world. And he did. From war zones to the anchor desk, Vittert built a career in journalism that few could have imagined. Leland Vittert's new memoir is a thank you letter to his father and the tough love and unwavering belief that helped transform a boy the world underestimated into a man defined by resilience, gratitude, and purpose. Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Tuesday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Deep State Weaponization Broadcasting live from Washington, D.C., Buck Sexton covers the latest developments in the Trump administration’s showdown with Democrat-run cities, focusing on Chicago and Portland. The discussion kicks off with explosive revelations about FBI surveillance of Republican Senators, including Lindsey Graham, Josh Hawley, and Ron Johnson, as part of the controversial “Arctic Frost” operation. Buck highlights Attorney General Pam Bondi’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, exposing the weaponization of the FBI and DOJ and the urgent need for reform under Director Patel. Who is Leading the Democrats? Buck recaps President Trump’s Oval Office remarks, where Trump blasts Democrats for having “no leadership and no policy,” calling out figures like Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Buck underscores Trump’s point, arguing that Democrats lack a clear leader for the first time in decades, with contenders like Gavin Newsom and J.B. Pritzker jockeying for influence while the party drifts toward radicalism. Remembering Israel's 9/11 Karol Markowitz, host of The Karol Markowicz Show, reflecting on the two-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. Karol shares her perspective on the enduring trauma for Jews worldwide, the resilience of Israelis, and the disturbing rise of antisemitism in Western societies. The discussion dismantles false narratives of “genocide” against Palestinians, highlighting how media outlets like The New York Times manipulate imagery to push propaganda. Buck and Karol underscore President Trump’s unwavering support for Israel, his clarity on Middle East policy, and the broader civilizational stakes tied to unchecked immigration and radical ideology. The conversation shifts to emerging hostility toward Israel from some voices on the right, with Karol warning against conspiracy theories and emphasizing that polls still show overwhelming conservative support for Israel. She frames antisemitism as a “mind virus” that can consume individuals and societies, urging vigilance against its spread. Buck reinforces the historical context of violent indoctrination in Gaza and calls for moral clarity in U.S. foreign policy. Living with Autism In a compelling second half, Buck welcomes Leland Vittert, NewsNation host and author of Born Lucky: A Dedicated Father, a Grateful Son, and My Journey with Autism. Leland shares his deeply personal story of overcoming severe autism through his father’s relentless commitment to adaptation and resilience. The discussion explores the flaws in expert-driven approaches that encourage meeting children “where they are” instead of pushing them to thrive. Leland details practical strategies his father used—like instilling discipline, teaching social skills, and building character—that transformed his life. Buck relates with his own childhood struggle with a speech impediment, reinforcing the theme that parental involvement and perseverance can change destinies. The segment also tackles the surge in autism diagnoses, with Leland calling it “the scientific question of our time” and criticizing partisan attacks on efforts to find answers. His book offers hope and actionable guidance for parents navigating challenges from autism to ADHD and beyond. TV news anchor Leland Vittert shares his story of growing up with autism, the “tough love” lessons his father insisted on, and how those moments of discomfort shaped the man and reporter he became. On this episode of the Chuck ToddCast, Chuck unpacks the latest government shutdown and the political brinkmanship that created it. He explores how shutdowns—once unthinkable—have become a partisan weapon, wasting money while allowing leaders like Donald Trump to punish opponents and play to their base. With Democrats at risk of shouldering equal or greater blame, Chuck asks whether the public is even paying attention, and what role figures like Russ Vought could play in reshaping government permanently. Beyond the shutdown, the conversation turns to the bigger picture: why voters never saw Trump as an aberration, why 2020 wasn't a full repudiation of 2016, and what Democrats must do to win back Trump voters in 2028. From Harris's struggle to differentiate herself from Biden to Clinton's careful dance with Reagan's legacy, Chuck argues that Democrats may need to admit Trump identified real problems—even as his solutions and behavior, especially with military leaders, remain deeply troubling. Then, Chuck is joined by NewsNation host Leland Vittert, who opens up about his personal journey growing up on the autism spectrum, the struggles his family faced, and the lessons that shaped his outlook on life and journalism. From being misunderstood in school and learning to navigate social cues, to the pivotal role his mother played in holding the family together, Vittert reflects on why he chose to go public with his story and how his experiences inform his new book—a parenting guide told from the child's perspective. He also explores how autism has served as both a challenge and, at times, a superpower in his career and personal life. The conversation widens to America's media landscape, where Vittert argues for a “radical center” approach and a journalism that calls balls and strikes on both sides rather than chasing flashy headlines. He stresses the importance of reviving local news, curating coverage around what matters most, and confronting the biases not only in how stories are told, but in which stories get told at all. This candid discussion is part memoir, part media critique, and a call for greater honesty—both in parenting and in public life. Finally, Chuck presents his ToddCast Top 5 senate races most likely to flip parties, answers listeners' questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment, and recaps a frustrating night at the Cowboys/Packers game. On this episode of the Chuck ToddCast, NewsNation host Leland Vittert opens up about his personal journey growing up on the autism spectrum, the struggles his family faced, and the lessons that shaped his outlook on life and journalism. This candid discussion is part memoir, part media critique, and a call for greater honesty—both in parenting and in public life.Got injured in an accident? Leland Vittert is one of America's most recognizable television correspondents. You'll know his face from years of frontline reporting in places like Egypt, Libya, Israel, and Ukraine. You may have followed his tumultuous exit from Fox News in 2021, after clashing with the network over its coverage of Donald Trump—and then his redemption arc, becoming the host of On Balance and the chief Washington anchor at NewsNation. But what you might not know is that Leland is autistic. He just wrote a book about it, called Born Lucky: A Dedicated Father, a Grateful Son, and My Journey with Autism. In it, Leland explains that he didn't talk until age 3, was born severely cross-eyed, and struggled with basic concepts like eye contact, humor, conversation cues, and social rules. Middle school and high school were nothing short of hell. So how did the kid we just described go from, as he says, “socially lost” to one of America's most recognizable and charismatic voices? Training. Relentless, nonstop work. His father knew the world wouldn't change for Leland—Leland would have to change for the world. It is a moving memoir about how Leland—and most notably, his father—worked to “beat” his autism. You'll have to read it to understand how. Leland was diagnosed about 40 years ago. Since then, conversation has shifted dramatically—and so have rates of diagnoses. In the 1980s, about one in 1,000 American children were diagnosed with autism. Today, it's one in 31. The questions of what causes autism and how we treat it have become so politicized that the conversation has left people either resentful, anxious, confused, or scared. And most critically, still without answers. Born Lucky is landing at an especially interesting moment given that the Trump administration has put the topic of autism at center stage. Just last week, Trump held a press conference where he alleged that there was a link between the active ingredient in Tylenol and autism, and told mothers not to take the pain reliever and fever reducer and instead “tough it out.” That's among the many things Leland and I talk about in this fascinating conversation.
