As California begins requiring homeowners to take steps to protect their properties from wildfires, a new state bill aims to offer cash for mitigation efforts, including clearing vegetation and installing fire-resistant roofing. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass released a proposed budget on Monday that would eliminate a nearly $1-billion financial gap by cutting more than 2,700 city positions — about 1,650 of them through layoffs. Newly released text messages reveal a troubling timeline of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass's absence during the destructive Palisades fire in January. While Santa Ana winds and fire warnings were issued days in advance, Bass was attending a political event in Ghana. The mayor's delayed return, excuses over deleted communications, and her subsequent firing of LA Fire Chief Kristin Crowley have fueled widespread criticism. With homes burning and emergency crews overwhelmed, residents were left questioning their leadership's priorities. The mayor's decision to be abroad during a major public safety crisis highlights ongoing concerns over leadership accountability in Democrat-run cities. Her reliance on remote communications and optics-driven responses have done little to reassure constituents who value law and order, fiscal conservatism, and direct engagement during emergencies. The situation underscores a growing divide between leadership optics and on-the-ground realities faced by citizens.
We view with fear Trump's economic policies. And we offer Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass some unsolicited advice.
Scholar and political analyst Bill Schneider join us in picking apart the latest moves by President Trump on the national level and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass locally to deal with their recent problems.

Join Jim and Greg for 3 Martini Lunch as they analyze President Trump's decision to pause tariffs on Canada, Pete Buttigieg's absurd theory about a deadly air disaster in D.C., and Mayor Karen Bass failing to control protests in Los Angeles.First, they dive into the new U.S.-Canada border security arrangement, which has resulted in a pause of tariffs on both sides. They discuss the potential impact of this agreement and debate whether it could have been reached without the threat of tariffs, or if the public pressure and political environment played a significant role in reaching this deal.Next, they discuss former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg's comments on the deadly air disaster in Washington, D.C. Buttigieg suggested that the Trump administration's offer for federal employees to resign in exchange for eight months of severance might have contributed to the tragic collision between a regional jetliner and an Army Blackhawk helicopter. Jim and Greg explain why they believe this theory is absurd and offer an update on Buttigieg's potential run for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat. Finally, they address Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass failing to confront unruly protests against deportations of illegal immigrants. Despite the protests causing major disruptions to traffic and defacing government buildings, Bass has not taken action to restore order. A wildfire devastated Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles, exposing shocking mismanagement of critical firefighting resources. The Sanz Reservoir, designed to hold 117 million gallons of water for emergencies, was drained and offline for repairs when the fire hit, leaving firefighters without sufficient water. The decision to empty the reservoir, despite known fire risks and strong Santa Ana winds, sparked outrage and lawsuits. Critics, including residents, questioned why repairs took over a year, especially for an $889,000 fix. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was in Ghana, and Governor Gavin Newsom deflected responsibility by emphasizing state versus city jurisdictions. Fire experts claim the water shortage worsened the disaster, highlighting systemic failures in disaster preparedness. This negligence underscores the need for competent leadership and accountability as communities grapple with the slow, costly rebuilding process. It's a stark reminder of the consequences of prioritizing bureaucracy over public safety.
Our examination of the conditions that exacerbated the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this month continues today with perspective from author and environmental historian Char Miller. Southern California received some much-needed rain over this past weekend, allowing firefighters to better contain the Palisades, Eaton, and Hughes fires. At the same time, the burned hillsides now bear much greater risk of mudslides and floods. These communities and individual residents must make complicated decisions about how to securely rebuild for the future. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have both advocated for eliminating some regulatory hurdles to help fast-track the reconstruction of Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Having carefully studied California's fire history, Char argues that haste could lead to repeats of the same land use, zoning, and construction mistakes that have increased residential fire risk across the state to begin with. Climate change aside, land use policies that discount long-term environmental awareness are common contributing factors in nearly every type of disaster risk found in the Ten Across geography. Listen in as Ten Across founder Duke Reiter talks with Char Miller about the developing events in Los Angeles and how they relate to many other risk and adaptation stories across Interstate 10 in recent history. From the L.A. wildfires to the inauguration and much more, Jim had much to present on this edition of the Round-Up. We now have video of numerous Los Angeles Fire Department officials warning that the steep cuts could impact disastrous response. 21 days before the Palisades fire broke out, Los Angeles fire personnel jammed into the L.A. fire commission meeting with a dire warning about the consequences of the budget cuts. --Firefighters responded only 44 minutes after a prominent Pacific Palisades resident called 9-1-1 on Tuesday morning, January 7th, by which time the Palisades fire had begun burning out of control from high winds according to local residents.--Los Angeles residents are suing a California utility company for allegedly causing the deadly Eaton fire.
A recall attempt to knock California Gov. Gavin Newsom out of office is underway as he faces sharp criticism for his handling of the Los Angeles wildfires — with opponents labeling his leadership a “series of catastrophic failures.” Organizers against Newsom vowed to file papers in the next two weeks in hopes of jumpstarting the process that could lead to the Democrat's ouster in the middle of his second term in the governor's mansion. The state chief executive — along with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass — is fighting for his political life as the wildfires have torched more than 40,000 acres (62.5 square miles, almost three times the size of Manhattan), destroyed more than 12,000 structures and killed at least 24 people.

Democrats are boycotting the chamber to prevent Republicans from forming committees and advancing their legislative agenda. With a special election approaching, Democrats are accusing the GOP of a "coup" and demanding further delay before any legislative action can take place. Finally, they shake their heads as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass still doesn't have a good answer about whether she should have left for Ghana when the warnings for severe wildfire conditions were so high. Last week on Fox the network used the tragedy of unprecedented wildfires in Southern California as a cudgel to attack Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. As the news desert encroaches, David Waldman and Greg Dworkin continue to serve us tasty news dessert: Pete Hegseth is on his way to be the first DEI Miltary hire of the upcoming administration. It is hard to deny Hegseth's qualifications as an authentic bona fide POS. Experience or ability would obviously distract from Pete's purity of purpose, yet being a born-again evangelical elevates Hegseth to sacrosanct untouchability. Hegseth will be the first thumb-in-the-eye member of the thumb-in-the-eye administration of the Thumb-In-The-Eye President. Greenland is thinking about rejoining the EU and should probably also make sure their NATO paperwork is up to date. Denmark wants to talk on the down low, but Trump always tells, and if he hasn't got anything to say will make it up anyhow. Sure, people have given Trump half a billion dollars for his inauguration… but what have they done for him lately? This term Trump wants no responsibility, no blame, but especially no debt. 23 thousand acres in ashes might be considered pretty bad optics for Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, especially when she wasn't in really great shape to begin with. One thing's for certain, none of this would have happened on Honorary Mayor Bob Saget's watch! Meanwhile, in South Korea, in the course of a few months the President fomented insurrection, declared martial law, was impeached, and is now arrested, because that country has a functioning justice system.

Join Jim and Greg for 3 Martini Lunch as they reflect on the litany of mistakes made by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in the past week, the early portions of the Carter funeral including some curious interactions among the presidents and vice presidents, and President Biden's “flat-out bonkers” claim that he would have beaten Donald Trump in the 2024 election if he hadn't dropped out.First, Jim takes a deep dive into how Mayor Karen Bass is handling the wildfire crisis in Los Angeles. Despite emerging warnings about wildfire dangers, Bass chose to travel to Ghana and stayed there, even after the situation escalated. Her lack of candor and shaky public appearances since returning have also been painful to watch.Next, they comment on Jimmy Carter's funeral - both what was said in the early parts of the service and the fascinating interactions - or lack of interactions - among current and former presidents and vice presidents and their spouses. The Biden-Harris, Trump-Pence, and Trump-Obama exchanges were of particular note. Finally, Jim and Greg react to President Biden's stunning claim in a USA Today interview, where he asserted that he would have defeated Donald Trump if he had stayed in the 2024 race. Even CNN dismissed his comments as “flat-out bonkers.” Jim points out how recent events and Biden's actions over the last four years make it clear that he is not equipped to lead the country. Please visit our great sponsors:NetSuitehttps://NetSuite.com/MARTINIDownload your FREE CFO's Guide to AI and Machine Learning at NetSuite.com/MARTINIOmaha Steakshttps://OmahaSteaks.com/3MLGo to OmahaSteaks.com/3ML to subscribe and get 12 FREE burgers, FREE shipping, and an EXTRA 10% OFF for the life of your subscription.
