Also, what I am calling "the Cemetery District." Come along with me on this very rough first episode of New To Nola!

Ep 38: Going plant-based can be daunting at first. It can prove to be even more of a challenge when trying to get ones whole family on board. For Liz Wood, the shift came slowly. However, the decision became imperative when her daughter started experiencing major digestive issues. After doing her own research as well as getting help from a nutritionist, her daughter's issues were relieved by going plant-based and gluten-free. On this episode of the podcast we talk about her family's experience eating vegan and how it's changed their lives. Liz, who is a partner and director of the barre program of HYLO Fitness, is also passionate about fitness and has been her whole life, coming from a family of athletes. We talk about her background with different fitness avenues and what resonates with her most today. We also chat about her experience with breast implants, BII (breast implant infection), American culture, Standard American Diet, and gluten. From spirits to hand sanitizer. The world has changed since our last episode just two weeks ago. Today, we’re going to talk about how a couple of local New Orleans businesses are working to help the city respond to the COVID19 pandemic. Join me as I talk with Sal Bivalacqua of Seven Three Distilling and Jess Bourgeois of Lula Restaurant Distillery. These two business owners essentially used their expertise to create a new business in four days, shifting from the manufacture of spirits for drinking to the production of hand sanitizer. We talk alcohol, hand sanitizer, Bourbon and more in this episode of the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast. Resources Check out Seven Three Distilling Company, then be sure to visit when you can. Their website talks about their company name, product offerings, and tour. We'll be doing a Beyond Bourbon Street event there once life returns to normal. Today’s show is about 10 things I am grateful for about New Orleans. This has been on my mind as I work on the Beyond Bourbon Street Travel Guide, and as I think about the end of 2019. Beyond Bourbon Street Sponsors Two Chicks Walking Tours If you love New Orleans, you’ve probably wandered through the Garden District. It is beautiful, but it really comes to life when you have a guide who can tell you about the history and about the people who live there. On a Two Chicks Walking tour you learn about the architecture, the residents and more. You also get to tour Lafayette Cemetery, just across the street from Commander’s Palace. Two Chicks keeps their tour groups small and offers a more intimate experience than most. You’ll have time to ask your questions and really walk away getting an insider’s perspective of the Garden District. Two Chicks also offers tours of St. Louis Cemetery #1 and the Ladies of the Night tour. Whatever you choose, know you will be in great hands and will have a wonderful time. Paul Sanchez, New Orleans Best Songwriter Paul Sanchez is the best songwriter in New Orleans. He's been writing songs and telling stories since he was six years old. Join us as we talk about New Orleans, music and storytelling. Learn about the earliest days of Paul's former band Cowboy Mouth, his connection to Steven Soderbergh, and who has the best singing voice in New Orleans. This interview first aired in October 2016. My interview skills have improved since then, but listening to this one today made me smile. I hope it brings joy to you as well. Give it a listen then check out Paul's music online. His first solo release was Jet, Black and Jealous (1992). It's still one of my favorite albums by any singer songwriter. Today's episode is all about coffee in New Orleans. It is the 3rd in a sub-series about staple crops or industries in Louisiana. We’ve previously talked about Tabasco (episode 87) and Camellia Brand red beans (episode 95). While coffee isn’t grown in New Orleans, the city has a long history with it. Today, I visit with local coffee roaster Kevin Pedeaux (Coast Roast Coffee). We talk about the Crescent City's long history with coffee, how coffee serves as part of the fabric of the city today, and how king cake played a role in his decision to start Coast Roast Coffee. All this and more in today's episode! Are there favorites in your family Do your parents favor one of your siblings over you Apparently if a random sample of people around a table at Happy Hour is representative it s common for your mom to tell you you re a disappointment. And your siblings aren t. Liz Wood is learning about parenting, literally overnight. One night a month ago she got a call from the foster care agency to say she and her husband had been approved as foster parents and they were getting an 11 year old next morning. That s how Liz got to be a mom. And to get a glimpse into the world of foster children. This is the very definition of eye opening. Andrew Legrand is not his mom s favorite. Even though he has a law degree and is smart enough to work out of his new house in Treme, practising law in his pyjamas. Justin Molaison is inheriting a 12 year old daughter by way of his impending marriage to Sarah, who he proposed to on the Gentilly Stage at this year s Jazz Fest. As we say on Happy Hour, "When you walk into a bar in New Orleans you never know who s going to be sitting on either side of you." This is one of the most surprisingly revealing Happy Hour conversations you ll ever stumble across. Photos at Wayfare by Jill Lafleur.

Host Kevin Willett is joined by Liz Wood from Southern New Hampshire Time Exchange. Time Exchange members receive one hour of credit for each hour of service they provide to other members. In return, they can use their credit to receive a service from another member. Members are not limited to giving back to the same member who provided services to them. All services are equally valued, doing a tax return receives the same time credit as grocery shopping. Audio file: southernnewhampshiretimeexchange.mp3
