This episode (S7:E22) is let's make every Saturday Shop Small Saturday!!! Supporting locally owned businesses is an important part of growing the economy and keeping tax dollars within the local economy. Every dollar spent at a locally owned business has a ripple effect throughout the community; it helps create jobs, support other local businesses, and can even attract tourism. Shopping, and dining at local establishments keeps money in your neighborhood, which means that more people can benefit from the goods and services offered by small businesses in the area. This, in turn, strengthens local economy, encourages entrepreneurship, and helps maintain a thriving economy overall. Therefore, supporting locally owned businesses not only benefits the entrepreneurs behind them but also those living in the community who rely on the economy generated by these businesses. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lunchwithdoug/message

Evan Turner, sommelier and wine director at Krasi Meze and Wine in Boston's Back Bay, leads the largest all Greek wine list in the country. He is now leading the way in introducing New England to Greek wine. Evan has recently been published in outlets such as Vinepair, Wine Enthusiast, USA Today 10 Best, Wine & Spirits, and Estiator. And Krasi has recently been listed as: one of the top 50 restaurants in Boston from Boston magazine (#16), one of the best wine bars in the Boston area from Eater Boston, one of 25 of the best restaurants in Boston right now from Time Out Boston, one of the best restaurants in Boston from Thrillist and was Time Out Boston's 2021 Love Local award winner which was the fan favorite pick of the city. Evan describes himself as “just a guy who was very lucky to live around the world, thanks to my stepfather who teaches English as a second language. We lived in Greece for about seven years and the nation captivated me immediately. I remember the very first meal I had in Greece down to who sat where. I ‘took to Greece like a duck to water,' as my mom used to say.” Turner worked in the restaurant business for several years as a bartender before becoming a sommelier. In 2005, he moved to Houston and worked his way up the Court of Master Sommeliers “until about 2008,” he says, when he decided Greek wine was it. He conceived and opened the popular Helen Greek Food and Wine — a James Beard semi-finalist — in Houston in 2015 before being offered the opportunity to run the wine program at Krasi. “I could not resist, so here I am,” he says. Evan is the most Greek non-Greek in the hospitality industry, extolling the virtues of Greek history and wine with the city of Boston and beyond. His Symposium Wednesday wine series at Krasi are always sold out and he is now deemed the Dionysus of Boston's Back Bay. He says, “Greece created nearly everything we take for granted when it comes to winemaking and wine culture. Shoot, my job exists because of the Greeks. So, to promote and drink their wines is to wrap yourself in history and a part of our culture that is as important as any we hold dear.” krasiboston.com You can also watch and listen on the Boston Greeks & GreekAFRadio apps!

The classic book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis finds its power in showing us a simple faith. A plain faith. One that leaves an immense impact without a lot of noise and fanfare. That's one way to describe Nashville singer-songwriter, Andy Gullahorn. Andy's music and life are purposely quiet and understated, but they are no less powerful. He speaks to us as a close friend. One who helps us relax. To laugh. To feel the joy of community and counsel. But he also shows us a way to discover holiness in the most common, everyday things, broadening our view of how to live eternally in the here-and-now. Join us for this first in a series of Unto Life Interviews: an in-depth conversation with Andy Gullahorn on his life, focus, and mission. Introducing the Master Hour, a monthly coaching call for the Masters in Travel community and Think Tank where advisors can bring questions to a panel to discuss what's going on in their business right here and now. On this first episode of this very exciting discussion, Whitney is joined by Emily Steele of Love Local, and Korrine Johnson of Travel Biz Boss and Journeys Travel. These think tanks are a really great place to push, to challenge, and to really encourage all of us to step into our CEO role of our own businesses. Questions asked during this month's Master Hour: What is the hierarchy of organization when we're feeling overwhelmed? What should I be doing first when I'm also trying to manage a book of business that is admittedly too big? How is everyone presenting travel documents to clients? What is the number one way to move the financial needle? At the end of the year, when I look at my numbers, I realize that I didn't make the money I thought I would make. What questions do you ask someone who is interested to join the travel industry and who you're considering offering a position as an IC within your organization? How to know when to say no and when to say yes to new inquiries when the end goal is to increase my total sales numbers? 99% of my business is comprised of repeat and referral clients, most of whom all live in the same community and who know each other personally. How do I say no to specific requests that are coming in from clients I've been working with for 15-20 years in a way that doesn't turn them off for future requests? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mastersintravel/message

Host Stacy Mitchell speaks with Leah Douglas, a staff writer and associate editor at the Food and Environment Reporting Network. As a reporter, Leah focuses on corporate power and political economy in the food sector. Her work sheds light on alarming consolidation in the food industry and its implications for farmers and consumers. Leah Douglas, Journalist Although grocery stores offer an illusion of choice with many different brands lining shelves, most brands are owned by just a handful of companies. Leah and Stacy unpack how consolidation in the food industry is bad for both consumers and farmers. They explore this problem by examining the poultry industry, where vertical integration of the supply chain has rendered chicken farmers dependent on the whim of their corporate buyers, forcing farmers out of business. Stacy and Leah also discuss the dairy sector. Dairy farms have long been the backbone of many rural towns across the nation. Leah explains why the number of dairy farms in America has dwindled from 600,000 to only 40,000 today. Stacy and Leah discuss how a major change in U.S. farm policy in the 1970s led to the consolidation we see today and the growing debate about whether we should reverse course and return to supply management, a policy approach that's more conducive to independent farming. They also explore some encouraging examples of communities fighting back against giant corporate actors including the success of a small town in Missouri, which blocked a large scale livestock farm from coming to their community. Tune in to hear how advocates, local communities, and states are taking on agriculture monopolies! Anything you can point to in the food system has really been rolled up to the point where just a few companies are controlling 50, 60 or as much as 80 percent or more of the market.
