I've often wondered about how influencer partnerships work. I've been involved in a couple, so I get to see examples from the inside. But I wanted to see more examples, so I brought on Emily Steele, Co-founder and CEO at Hummingbirds (Seed funded). She's actually built a business around helping brands discover and work with hyper-local content creators. Some of these brands are working with 50-100 creators at once. A lot of what we talk about is very relevant for B2B influencer partnerships. What does a good partnership look like? How do you know it's working? Do you need to partner with people that have huge followings? And what are some of the best content creators doing really well? We also cover: Hummingbirds' positioning in sales conversations (it's not what you think); The nuances of measuring the impact of influencer partnerships; What differentiates an amazing content creator from just a mediocre one; What marketing big bets are you taking in 2024 and why; AMA: Emily asks me her burning question. In E43, Localogy senior analyst Charles Laughlin talks about the unique power of local influencers with Emily Steele, the CEO & Co-founder of Hummingbirds. Hummingbirds is the antithesis of Khardashian level influencer marketing, where celebrities will millions of Instagram followers hawk luxury goods. Rather, it's about that friend in your community with perhaps hundreds of followers who convinced you to try out that new cocktail bar or yoga studio. Ultimately Hummingbirds sees itself as an innovative way for brands to break through to Millennial consumers who are “spending money on Spotify to avoid ads.” Des Moines, Iowa-based Hummingbirds began in 2019 to “help place-based brand find and work with hyper-local content creators to drive awareness and sales.” Steele says that brick and mortar retail and personal services businesses seem to resonate most with local influencer marketing. The company raised a $1 million seed round late in 2022. This Week in Local is brought to you by Localogy. To learn more, please visit Localogy.com. Hi there, listener! Today I'm so excited to welcome Emily Steele to the podcast. She does so many exciting things, but today our conversation focuses mostly on her role as the founder of tech startup The Hummingbirds. Yes, tech startup. No, she's not techy. But you'll see you don't need to be. Such inspiring words from Emily. I hope you are empowered by this conversation to dream big and make things happen! Key Takeaways Emily was born and raised in Pella, Iowa, where her understanding of entrepreneurship meant having a bakery. She studied marketing and communications in Des Moines and landed in the nonprofit world because she thought it was the way to make a difference. Through her nonprofit work Emily became interested in revitalization and the impact of small businesses and started to wonder if she could make a change that way. Emily tried a lot of things but has found great success with The Hummingbirds which connects brands to hyperlocal content creators. Emily noticed that just posting about her daily life in Des Moines was driving awareness and sales for small businesses. She created a community of people interested in peer-to-peer marketing. Her original goal was to build community and she used simple tools like Google Forms. With investor dollars she collaborated with a software developer to build software. Their new software integrates social media profiles of members and lists events and opportunities. She is continuing to raise capital to develop new software. Version 2.0 allow businesses communicate with Hummingbirds directly and remove the extra step of acting like a marketing agency. At first Emily thought the Iowa Startup Accelerator just wanted to help small businesses, but now she realizes she had a real, scaleable business model with potential for big future gains. The Hummingbirds has already expanded to Omaha and Milwaukee and will be reaching more Midwest cities in the future. Emily “does it all” by acknowledging that some things just can't be a priority. She celebrates little wins and looks for ways to delegate and simplify. Emily encourages women to seek out venture capital. Know your vision and why you are different, but it's okay to not feel completely ready! Quotes “People power brands and I think it's the future of how brands will do their marketing and really move the needle in terms of authenticity and impact.” “Let's talk about venture capital in Iowa.” “That ripple effect is so powerful… that can literally change someone's life.” “I hate to see when people's ideas just live inside them forever” Connect with Emily Emily is most active on Instagram. Mark Naples is the founder of WIT Strategy and has led strategic efforts on behalf of more than 450 companies, complete company re-positioning campaigns, and dozens of corporate and product launches. He joins the show today to talk about keeping your ego checked, why “bro culture” holds back brands, the importance of setting ground rules and keeping your principles honed, and building trust and true rapport with the media. Kevin also shares the wonderful yet horrible experiences he had while running for office! Takeaways: [9:44] Mark and Kevin talk about a few intense interactions with nameless figureheads about wanting to be on the cover of a magazine, when the focus should first be adding value and establishing trust with the media. [11:41] Sir John Durham had what Mark calls an “intellectual curiosity that was insatiable, and an emotional connection and empathy that was insatiable.” [14:40] Mark discusses working independently and getting to choose who he works with, and who he chooses not to work with. [16:12] Kevin ran for office? He discusses both horrible and wonderful, and wonderfully horrible experiences. Why did Facebook shut down his account during the most crucial week? [19:41] Does Mark just walk away from the conversation where someone can't put their ego down, or does he keep a positive perspective? [21:21] What are some symptoms of “bro culture,” and how does it hold companies and brands back? [28:36] Your job is to help the reporter get smart about what it is you are offering, and help them understand it better. That is how you're going to really succeed. [35:32] How important is it when you're getting information to be able to pair that up with somebody? How much information do you share with that reporter about the type of interaction that they're likely to have? [41:37] Mark mentions two great young journalists, Michael Learmonth and Emily Steele, who are now these hyper-respected people, and which one of them he's afraid of. [48:25] What are some of the best practices in building trust with reporters? [49:01] Where is it going? Is it going to get any better? Quotes: “To be authoritative, you have to have the respect of your peers and you have to be positioned well in the media.” — Mark “I tell them that you really need to focus on the value you create, not on yourself.” — Mark “Help the reporter get smart and help them understand better what problem you're solving. That's how you're going to really succeed.” — Mark Mentioned in This Episode: Sir John Durham Tribute links to John Durham - Kevin will add Mark Naples WIT Strategy Kate Kaye Explains WTF is Going on With Google The Social Network
Introducing the Master Hour, a monthly coaching call for the Masters in Travel community and Think Tank where advisors can bring questions to a panel to discuss what's going on in their business right here and now. On this first episode of this very exciting discussion, Whitney is joined by Emily Steele of Love Local, and Korrine Johnson of Travel Biz Boss and Journeys Travel. These think tanks are a really great place to push, to challenge, and to really encourage all of us to step into our CEO role of our own businesses. Questions asked during this month's Master Hour: What is the hierarchy of organization when we're feeling overwhelmed? What should I be doing first when I'm also trying to manage a book of business that is admittedly too big? How is everyone presenting travel documents to clients? What is the number one way to move the financial needle? At the end of the year, when I look at my numbers, I realize that I didn't make the money I thought I would make. What questions do you ask someone who is interested to join the travel industry and who you're considering offering a position as an IC within your organization? How to know when to say no and when to say yes to new inquiries when the end goal is to increase my total sales numbers? 99% of my business is comprised of repeat and referral clients, most of whom all live in the same community and who know each other personally. How do I say no to specific requests that are coming in from clients I've been working with for 15-20 years in a way that doesn't turn them off for future requests? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mastersintravel/message

Emily is the co-founder and CEO of The Hummingbirds. From new taco trucks to unique events hosted downtown, it was posts on social media from people she trusted that impacted her decisions. She brought together 20 of her closest friends and asked if they'd be willing to amplify different experiences in Des Moines on social media at the same time and from there, The Hummingbirds was born.Emily has built a community of hundreds of everyday local voices, influencers, bloggers, and content creators who try a new brand and share it on social media. After 100 partnerships, they're expanding to new cities, as they introduce a new spin on influencer marketing in local markets.Check out this episode to hear more about:How our habits are influenced by our friends on social mediaUsing word of mouth and personal relationships to build brand awareness Learning how to explain your brand to build buy-inListen to the full episode here.

What have we been doing this year? Other than teaching through lockdown, eating too much chocolate, drinking moscato, and yapping away on this podcast... In this episode we get to catch up on the Word Docs' latest projects, which involve a theatre/film project which is not a porno (but does feature a dominatrix), music made in the Hall of Possibility, and more pseudonyms for the woman who has everything. What other writers do you know who can get kidnapped by pirates on their way to a writing gig? Like, for real. Not in their imaginations. And what other academics do you know who are willing to dish the dirt on what it's really like to be a working writer? Fine, lots of them. But how many of them also make ambient music? One. Sean. Well done, Sean. He's reason enough to listen to this podcast - especially if you're smart enough to listen all the way to the end. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
