"Cease endlessly striving for what you want to do and learn to love what must be done." | Goethe Yvette Hampton talks with Lara Molettiere, homeschool mom, author, blogger, and speaker about how to make your home a sacred space to cultivate strong roots and build relationships with your family. Did you enjoy playing dress-up as a child? If so, think about how you felt with each costume change, each subtle (or not-so-subtle) identity shift. Today's episode explores the idea that what we wear when we're stuck at home can have a profound impact on our mood and productivity. Further readingIn this episode, I mentioned the work of Marla Cilley, aka the FlyLady. Click here (http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/dressed-to-shoes/) to learn more about more about her "Dress to Shoes" philosophy. I've also learned a lot from one of my favorite coaches, Tonya Leigh, about the power of dressing up while working from home. It's been a crazy few weeks for us all! I'm sorry I haven't been here in a little bit but I needed to step back for a few weeks. Hopefully you had a chance to catch up on some older episodes during the break. ;) There's no possible way for a podcast episode to address the range of experiences and emotions that COVID-19 is bringing up for us. For some, it's the frustration of being stuck inside, needing our normal outlets, missing our friends and support systems. For others, it's the devastation of losing loved ones or anxiety about high-risk friends and family (or ourselves). So instead of addressing this whole gamut of experiences, I wanted to give you one clear tool you can focus on. I find this personally to be very grounding when life feels out of control so I hope it will be valuable to you, as well. This episode is about my love of using lists, and how lists pick up where scheduling can leave off. Much of what I learned about lists and routines I learned as a newlywed from Marla Cilley, the Flylady. Enjoy!

Tune in as Marla Cilley aka The Fly Lady and New York Times Best Selling Author - coaches us through common mental roadblocks when it comes to housework, decluttering and cleaning and offers us some tough love. Enjoy!
Someone once said that a really good declutter of your life is as good as a remodel (and so much easier and cheaper). Now as an architect, I don't know that I totally agree with that. A remodel can improve your layout, add natural light, introduce in beautiful new surfaces and generally custom fit your home to your life. A solid decluttering job can't do any of those things. However, sometimes a serious declutter is as good as an addition. Pare down your stuff BEFORE you plan your remodel so you don't waste valuable time, effort, and MONEY making more room for your things instead of creating a home you love.In Today's Episode you'll hear ...Real talk: you're going to need to declutter before your remodel anyway ... you'll have to get ALL of your stuff out of the way before you can start swinging a hammer for demolition! [1:45]Two fun stories of my rolling stone past: that time I lived in a tent for five months, AND that time I lived in hostels along the Mediterranean coast for five months ... and what both adventures taught me about living with less [2:37]Parkinson's Law applied to stuff in your house [4:45]Two quick tips to make your kitchen bigger ... overnight! [6:31]A little shout out to all our friend, Marie Kondo, with my thoughts on why her methods don't always work for Americans [9:17]My personal decluttering hero: Marla Cilley, aka FlyLady and her magical 15 minute burst theory of doing everything [9:53]Find links and complete show notes at midmod-midwest.com/206!

Marla Cilley Helps You Declutter to Restore Your Confidence When I look back over the hundreds of interviews I did for the WISH Summits and other online courses, one of the people who left the best impression on me was Marla Cilley, also known as "The Fly Lady," from her website dedicated to helping women get control of their personal environments and loving themselves more in the process. I had always been aware of the connection between how a person maintains control in their environment, and how they feel in their head/mind. But trying to shove productivity tips down the throat of the "already overwhelmed" isn't much good. Marla masters "baby steps" and is the perfect voice you need whispering in your ear to remind you that you're doing ok, and one step at a time is still moving forward. Marla spent a lot of time talking and getting to know me before we did our call, and she was incredibly generous with her time and attention. She insists that she does what she does because she just wants to help, and it comes through in everything she does and in how she connects with others. I hope you really enjoy this call and connect with Marla and her great work on her website here. About Marla Cilley Marla Cilley is The FlyLady. She does not fly a plane! To keep a long story short, Marla loves to teach people to flyfish. That is how she got the name — FlyLady. Marla is a SHE (Sidetracked Home Executive). This system saved her life and continues to bless her. When Marla found the www.SHEsintouch.com website years ago, she needed a user name for the forums. Everyone was trying to help her come up with one. When they found out that she loved to flyfish and she taught it at a local college, they came up with “FlyLady.” It is because of Marla’s SHEness that she can now teach others. On December 7, 1999, someone asked Marla for help, and the FlyLady mentoring group began. This group has always been her gift to whoever joined. All Marla ever wanted to do was help people. And now, the name, FlyLady, has come to mean so much more. One of her members came up with a great acronym for it: Finally Loving Yourself (FLY) – this is the gift that FlyLady wants you to receive. It was only after Marla learned out how to “FLY” that she was able to become the person of her dreams. She has three rules that she lives by: Don’t sweat the small stuff; what doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter. Laugh everyday. Even if it is at yourself. Love like there is no tomorrow. You can learn more about Marla and her work here.
You I'm so excited to share this episode with you. Eric Dodge is an amazing musician, terrific speaker, and really wonderful human being. I met him several years ago at a national speaker's association event, and we've been friends ever since. Why Not Today is one of his best songs, but it isn't just a song, it's Eric's mantra. His way of being. He explains why this means so much to him, and how we can all use that to soar beyond our wildest dreams. Eric Dodge's music is what makes him famous, but his heart is something you'll notice as soon as you listen to him. And as a bonus, just for us, he performs one of his songs. You won't want to miss this episode! For more from Eric, visit http://EricDodge.com Why Not Today?!? More about Eric Dodge Eric Dodge discovered his passion for singing in the most heartfelt of ways. While always having a strong love for music, his greatest fear was to share that passion publicly. On September 11th, 2001, as our great country suffered a terrorist attack, Eric was on a cruise ship outside of Mexico. That fateful day was when Eric made his decision to no longer be afraid. He stepped up to the microphone aboard the ship to share his voice and love of music. He was no longer willing to let his fear keep him from what was truly his gift to the world. He opened up his heart and sang Garth Brooks’ song “The Dance”. After his performance, a passenger approached him and encouraged him to pursue a singing career. Just as many others were changed by the events of 9/11, Eric took her words to heart and decided to follow his heart into the world of country music. Eric has worked with Seth Riggs, vocal coach to the Stars in Hollywood and from there was sent to train with Jeffrey Skouson in Las Vegas. Thanks to these great coaches, Eric began sharing his talents professionally in 2003. He’s performed hundreds of shows all over the United States and Canada. He has opened for many of Nashville’s finest country music stars including: the late Chris LeDoux, Diamond Rio, Little Texas, John Michael Montgomery, Justin Moore, Collin Raye, SheDAISY, Terri Clark, Julianne Hough, Clint Black, Travis Tritt, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, and Carrie Underwood at the Stadium of Fire – 4th of July Celebration in Provo, Utah in front of over 50,000 people. Eric has been featured in America’s largest country music magazine, “Country Weekly” on several occasions, and on the popular website, Music News Nashville. He was also recognized as “New Country Star—Best Male Vocalist”. Eric has also appeared live on many television shows. While performing on Good Things Utah on ABC 4, he met the very popular author and website mentor, Marla Cilley (aka the FlyLady) of www.FlyLady.net. She was so impressed with his performance, she asked him to record a song Titled “Why Not Today” which prompted the release of Eric’s album titled “Why Not Today”. Since then, Eric has accompanied FlyLady to many of her nationwide events where he has performed and been welcomed by thousands. Eric has recorded many of his albums at OmniSound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked with the best producers, songwriters, and musicians. In March of 2006, his first radio single, “Anything for You” was released and hit #19 on the New Music Weekly-Independent Artists chart. His second Country album “Why Not Today” reached #3 on Amazons best seller list and his album, “A Christmas Wish” sold thousands worldwide in its first season released. His fourth album, “Home to Me” was released in April 2010. Unplugged Journey was a limited release album and was released in November of 2011. A Fork In The Road, a collection of Broadway and other hit songs was release in August of 2012. In 2013 Eric produced his gospel Hymn CD titled Never Walk Alone and in 2014 Eric’s greatest Hit’s CD got released titled Ultimate Collection. In 2015 Eric wrote and released his signature self help book “Why Not Today? Face You Fears and Chase Your Dreams!” a book about creating the life you were meant to live. Eric Continues to produce and release new music and books to this day and has released 8 full length albums and 2 books to date. In 2013 Eric released his debut book called “Baby Steps to Music Industry Success.” It is a book about Eric’s journey and all the small steps he took that got him the music career and recognition he has today. Eric is also a member of the National Speakers Association where he gives musical keynote events across corporate America. Eric Dodge is a country boy at heart. When not on stage performing his favorite country songs, you can find him out riding horses or 4 wheelers or camping out at his family’s ranch. He loves anything outdoors including fishing and hiking. Summer, winter, spring or fall his favorite moments are sleeping outside by the campfire under the stars. From the brim of his hat to the tips of his boots, he is a true country boy. For more information about Eric’s performances and past events as well as his press page and media files, go to www.ericdodge.com

Marla Cilley, also know as the Flylady, is back for a second episode! In this edition, Marla dives into how to do the Flylady method of zone cleaning your home, and how to work through the days of the week to stay organized. We got to talk about a lot of fun and easy ideas to keep your home and life organized. Plus, Marla shares about the inspiration for her next book near the end of the episode, and I got goosebumps when she told me about her visit to the National Shrine of Saint Therese. It's an inspiring and amazing story, and one that you will NOT want to miss :) If you have not yet listened to the first episode, you can find it here. I'm so excited to share this second hour with Marla for today's episode as part of the "Loving your 2016" series. In this episode, we talk about: - how she breaks out the zones to cleaning your home - the theme for each day of the week, when using the Flylady method - how to approach having your mother in law come over (enlist her help in cleaning!) - how admitting you need help, and welcoming it, and how that changes your view point - what she keeps in her closet to give as gifts should an event come up - planning out big family vacations, (calendar party) - how to create a relaxed environment around timing when family is leaving - her plans for live events in the spring - revisiting her trip to San Mateo, CA a few years ago - her writing process for her new spiritual book, including her visit to the chapel of St Therese - how Sink Reflections got it's name - a few thoughts on saints Flylady.net - Marla's website The National Shrine Museum of St Therese Marla is the author of "Body Clutter," and "Sink Reflections," both are best sellers, and I can not recommend them highly enough. Marla Cilley, known as The Fly Lady, shares her story of following the "God Breezes" in her life, naming her FlyLady.net a ministry, more habits we can develop for the months of the year, and encouragement and inspiration as we take baby steps, garner the power of incremental change over time, and offer mercy and love to others and to our own selves as we seek to clean and organize our homes and hearts throughout the coming year. Marla Cilley, founder of Flylady.net, is a true inspiration. I found her site over ten years ago, as I was going through a divorce and knew I needed to find a way to take care of myself and my home. I had started the search, thinking that I simply needed to find ways to clean and declutter, and to get my life back on track. What I found was Marla's loving wisdom, her "Flying lessons," her support, a lot of humor, a fun community, and a renewed sense of who I was. For this, I'm grateful. I'm so honored to have Marla as a guest for today's episode as part of the "Loving your 2016" series. It was a true joy to speak with her, and to spend time soaking up her love and joy-filled philosophy. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the state of your home, or you've made organizing your life a priority for this year, I encourage you to listen, and to visit Flylady.net for more resources. She offers all of this for free - and you are in for such a treat. In this episode, we talk about: - how Marla arrived at her current zone cleaning process, including the overwhelming amount of cards and lists that she started with, trying to "perfect" an organization process - shining your sink, what it is, and how that changed Marla's life - that two resolutions that started everything - Marla's take on the word perfect (and how she corrects me when I use it!) - the food addiction, and why foods evoke memories and provide an endorphin rush. (along with why Mac n Cheese was Marla's go to food when she got stressed, and why I run for peanut butter and chocolate). - an easier way to clean your bathtub - a great way to keep bathtub toys stored, and Flylady's first viral post on facebook - making cleaning fun - why having a wall calendar is important for organization and teaching our children - why Marla calls "jobs" or chores "blessings" - why it's important to release things that don't bring you joy - the power and importance of complimenting other people Flylady.net - Marla's website Marla is the author of "Body Clutter," and "Sink Reflections," both are best sellers, and I can not recommend them highly enough. Have you ever been in that place? You know, you come home from work… the house is a mess… you don’t want to be there… you’re yelling at the kids… you’re yelling at your spouse because your environment is a mess but it’s like your inside is a mess and your emotions are a mess too. Nobody likes to live like that. Not only that – it’s not good for you either. That’s why we interviewed Marla Cilley, a housekeeping guru commonly known as FlyLady, for some tips on how to get out of this chaos. You'll definitely want to listen to this interview from start to finish! First, though, I was curious if there was any scientific research surrounding stress levels and home environments. It turns out there is. Wives who described their homes as more restorative (meaning they enjoyed their home environment) had lower stress levels and less depressed mood across the day. Conversely, wives who described their homes as more stressful had indicators (a flatter slope of diurnal cortisol) of chronic stress. Those indicators are typically associated with adverse health outcomes. Apparently, husbands are not affected so much by the home environment, as there was really a null result for them. The conclusion is that wives feel more responsibility for the home environment.[i] The same researcher found an association between wive’s marital satisfaction and the flatter slop of diurnal cortisol. We all know that correlation doesn’t imply causation, but we think it is reasonable to conclude that if you find your home environment stressful, particularly as a wife, you’ll likely to have decreased marital satisfaction. The converse is true as well.[ii] So, I think it is safe to say that taking care of your home is another way of taking care of your marriage. We are not asking wives to do this, but we want both of you to take this seriously and figure out how to divide up the responsibilities. Not only does the research show that home environments affect the diurnal cortisol which impacts marital satisfaction, but the same theme carries over to parenting. Findings show that maladaptive parenting styles and child emotionality both increase in cluttered homes. The researchers saw this as being mediated by maternal tenseness.[iii] The case we’re making here is that creating a home environment that is peaceful and has some sense of serenity and calm is a blessing to your marriage and your family. That’s why we interviewed FlyLady – to ask her how to help young couples get their homes organized and kept tidy. She gave us some awesome information including: Where to start – especially if you’ve got a company A different focus for each month of the year How to build a routine How to get rid of your perfectionism How to break your home into zones so it’s not so overwhelming How to create that relaxing environment you want to come home to How to save money in the kitchen.
