A ticket is way more than just a slip of paper that gets you into the gig, show, or football match. But with the move to QR codes, barcodes and digitisation, do they still feel special? In Untangling Tickets, designer Jules Akel draws on his extensive experience in designing beautiful tickets for Lord's cricket and Wimbledon which helped build a sense of anticipation ahead of the day. Along the way we talk forgeries, buried treasure, and the power of wit in helping brands connect with the audience. And how does Disney take tickets to a whole other level, with their wearable technology – the MagicBand? A ticket is more than just a slip of paper. It's something you gaze at longingly as you look forward to the event, and hold onto afterwards as a keepsake. It's as much about anticipation – as the basics of gaining entry on the day. In this episode we're going to Untangle Tickets, with designer Jules Akel. For 25 years he created beautiful tickets for Marylebone Cricket Club at Lords. And he has designed an abundance of materials for Wimbledon, Ascot, whiskey distilleries and music festivals. Of course, nowadays – we just flash a QR code or barcode stored on our phone, but as Jules explains, we can still design tickets so they feel special. Giving us a sense of joy and fun about the whole experience. Along the way we talk forgeries, buried treasure, and the power of wit in helping brands connect with the audience. We also break off to look at how Disney take tickets to a whole other level, with their wearable technology – the MagicBand. About Jules Akel Jules is a graduate of Preston Poly where he was taught about the primacy of the idea over decoration. Of course the art is important, but in the service of communication. He has enjoyed creating all manner of designs to help companies large and small to prosper. These companies have included Marylebone Cricket Club, Wimbledon Tennis Championships, Greenpeace, L'Oreal, Dalwhinnie Distillery, Marlborough College, Wellington College, Skibo Castle and others. The Portuguese-Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado has sold more than 40 million records worldwide and won awards including a Grammy. Her upbeat, genre-defying pop music dominated the charts in the 2000s, from her break out hit I'm Like A Bird to her 2006 album Loose and its stand out hit Maneater. After finding that her music had been rediscovered by a whole new generation of fans on social media, she's back with 7, her first album since 2017.In February 2021, a coup returned Myanmar to military rule, overthrowing the democratically elected government. Under the regime, violence against civilians has escalated, with thousands jailed, tortured and killed – although the numbers are believed be much higher. At least three million people have been displaced. Just two weeks ago, a UN Report outlined the gendered impact of the coup: It found that military forces have committed widespread forms of sexual violence. However, despite the coup's devastating impact, women and girls are taking on key roles within the resistance movement. Also this month, there have been separate news reports that women are being conscripted into the military. Nuala discussed the situation with Tin Htar Swe, the former head of The BBC's Burmese Service.Woman's Hour broadcast from Lord's Cricket Ground as England faced New Zealand for the culmination of a five-match T20 International series and to mark 25 years since the Marylebone Cricket Club, that runs Lord's, allowed women to become members. During the programme she spoke to World Cup winning cricketer Ebony Rainford-Brent and the England and Wales Cricket Board's Head of the Women's professional game, Beth Barrett-Wild. She also spoke to girls about why they love playing cricket. Nuala was also given a tour of Lord's – taking in the spots of most significance to women's history at the ground. She heard about Baroness Rachel Heyhoe Flint and Martha Grace, the mother of a player who is considered one of the all time greats, W. G. Grace. Her tour guide Rachel Pagan met her just outside the ground. Taking children out of school during term time was in the news this week as the new Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said there "will have to be consequences" for parents who fail to keep their children in school. It's illegal to take children out without the school's permission. Minimum fines, imposed by local authorities, for taking children out of class without permission for five school days will rise from £60 per child to £80 per child from August.. In her first interview since taking up the post, the education secretary spoke to the BBC's education correspondent Branwen Jeffries. We hear from parent, Laura Melling who recently went viral on TikTok for discussing a fine she'd received after taking her young daughters out of school for a holiday during term time and we spoke to journalist and parenting author Lorraine Candy.Annie Garthwaite's second novel, The King's Mother, tells the story of historical figure Cecily Neville, mother of Edward IV and Richard III. Annie believes Cecily's role in the Wars of the Roses has been hugely underestimated by historians and her novel places her firmly at the heart of the action. Essie Fox has written five historical novels and her most recent, The Fascination, is set in the world of Victorian theatres and travelling fairs. They join Nuala to discuss the challenge of writing the stories of women who have been overlooked by the history books.Adele, one of the world's best-selling music artists, has revealed in an interview ahead of her concerts in Munich next month, that she will be stepping back from music temporarily after growing tired of the slog of fame and missing her old life. She talks about her "tank being empty" and the author and broadcaster Emma Gannon joined Anita to talk about when it all gets a bit much.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Annette Wells Editor: Rebecca Myatt

Sarah is  currently Director in charge of the Marylebone Cricket Club Foundation, the charitable arm of the MCC, and their aim is to utilise the power of sport and specifically cricket to enhance lives.  Awarded an OBE by the British Government in 2013 for her charities services to the people of Afghanistan Sarah's founder story is incredible, from a war time doctor, to mother, to charity founder to twenty plus years of regularly travelling between the UK and Afghanistan and being at risk of kidnap.  Sarah's story starts with her overcoming doubts about her ability to study medicine and become a doctor... Inspired by a gap year working in rural India, Dr Sarah Fane decided to switch from her degree course in French and Latin to study medicine at Bristol University. Her Elective, in 1987, was spent in the Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan, working with an obstetrician in an area with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Once qualified, she returned to Pakistan, and worked from a Mujahideen camp on the border with Afghanistan, during the height of the Soviet Afghan war, running clinics for female refugees. In 2001 she was invited to Afghanistan, which was in the grip of the Taliban regime, to work in a mother and child clinic. The visit and the people she met inspired her to set up Afghan Connection. Closing earlier this year the charity supported education and sport in Afghanistan and has over the last 20 years built 46 schools for over 75,000 children. It also ran cricket projects backed by the Marylebone Cricket Club,M.C.C. which benefitted over 100,000 children in 22 provinces. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Or to give him his full name, Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Edinburgh in Scotland and he died in Crowborough, Sussex, England aged 71.  His family name was just Doyle and Conan was his middle name but taking Ignatius and Conan together with the surname Doyle, he could hardly be anything other than of Irish Catholic heritage. His mother was Irish and though his father was born in England, he was of Irish family.  He was born in Edinburgh and his father Charles was an alcoholic and that caused the family to fall apart. His father ended up in the famous Crichton Royal psychiatric hospital just outside Dumfries.  Because his father could not support him, Doyle’s wealthy uncles sent him to a large Catholic school in Lancashire, which I stumbled upon one sunny night several years ago when out for a walk. Then aged 16, he went to another Catholic school at Feldkirch in Austria. Despite his Catholic upbringing, Doyle renounced Catholicism and became an ardent believer and supporter of spiritualism. He was a member of the Hampshire Society for Psychical Research and the Society for Psychical Research in London. After his time in Austria, he went back to Edinburgh where he trained as a doctor. After graduating he worked in the south of England, setting up a practice in Southsea. Incredible as it sounds, he didn’t make money and had to become a writer to support himself.  He also became the goalkeeper of the Portsmouth Association Football club when he was at Southsea. He also played cricket form Marylebone Cricket Club in London and then as part of the Authors XI with J M Barrie, P G Woodhouse and A A Milne. He was also a keen golfer! He was a big supporter of vaccination. He went to study ophthalmology in Vienna but found the German too hard (though he had been a school student in Austria off course). While he was in Vienna he mainly spent his time ice skating and writing fiction. He was a prolific writer and his first short story was published in 1879 when he was 20. He wrote his first Sherlock Holmes story when he was 27 and struggled to find a publisher for it. By the time he had written several stories he was tired of Holmes.  Doyle was interested in many things and it is said that he wasn’t considered a great writer because he kept changing the focus of his enthusiasms, from writing to medicine, to golf to psychical research and many other subjects The Ring of Thoth Given what we’ve just said about Doyle’s wandering enthusiasms, it is interesting to note that is the same criticism he makes of the John Vansittart Smith hero of the Ring of Thoth. The observation adds little to the story, and has the ring of a personal anecdote. The Vansittarts were a noble English family of Dutch descent, and Doyle would probably have heard of them. The Ring of Thoth was published in 1890 in the Cornhill Magazine.  The Ring of Thoth was the first mummy story. If we think of our Gothic Horror and especially of our Hammer Horror tradition, we have mummies, werewolves and vampires; in some movies they even meet up and do battle! I remember the Matell glow in the dark mummy, wolf man and other figures. My memory is hazy about the others. A friend of mine had a glow in the dark mummy and I wanted it.  And Boris Karloff’s role in The Mummy from 1932 owes it all to The Ring of Thoth. As stories go it’s fairly straightforward. We have the learned man delving too deeply into things that should not be delved into, a little anyway. He’s not as bad as some of M R James or H P Lovecraft’s protagonists who mess with the really bad stuff. I think that’s a quote from Phil Lynott, by the way (if yous are old enough to know who that is) Pull Out The Stops The show is growing enormously, up 33% this month, which is fantastic, but more downloads mean more cost and if you like the show, it would...
