Entrepreneurs are most successful when they fit and have passion for what they are undertaking. The answers to critical questions such as these indicate the probability of making it: How do they relate to the solution they are bringing into the world? Do they have grit and determination, especially in the early stages? Are they humble enough and willing to seek help and support when and where they need it? Are they crazy enough to invest in?In this episode, I (Daniel) interviewed Matt Hunckler, Founder and CEO of Powderkeg, and Christopher (Toph) Day, CEO of Elevate Ventures. Why Sales Executives Should Look to the Midwest When Hiring After COVID-19 Sales executives need to plan with optimism. We may not know when the pandemic will be over but when the health crisis ends, will companies be ready to launch well? Matt Hunckler is the CEO of Powderkeg. His company works with people in the tech industry to reach their full potential by helping them to get established in a career in tech, regardless of their location. Due to the pandemic, there's been a shift in the unemployment rate from 2% to almost 20%. All industries have been affected, including technology. However, many companies that are well-capitalized and those with a good business model are now getting back to hiring talent. Hiring in the Midwest Start-up companies are not for everyone, but if you can get on the front end of a rising star, there are incredible opportunities and potential for growth. For example, businesses in the midwest are raising considerable money. They are investing in talent and they are growing and selling. The opportunity is enormous. Tech hubs outside of Silicon Valley, like those that are found in the Midwest, are unique in each of their own ways and are showing encouraging growth. It should be noted that unlike the companies in Silicon Valley, these smaller startups don't have the same level of capital. They need a sound revenue model from day one and have to be profitable to survive. This should help salespeople to focus on companies with a strong revenue model in order to have the best-earning potential. Life in the Unvalley Tech hubs outside of Silicon Valley are also known as the Unvalley. The cost of living and the quality of life is different in the Unvalley in that the competition for jobs is lower. Many sales reps believe that working for a startup company in the Unvalley is more rewarding in terms of achieving success. Each tech hub is very different and there is an advantage in knowing these communities well. The startup companies aren't as well-mapped so their data is sparse. When making work-related decisions, look at the culture of the company, and make sure their values align with yours. Even with layoffs, there are enormous opportunities particularly in the tech communities in the Unvalley. “Why Sales Executives Should Look to the Midwest When Hiring After COVID-19” episode resources Connect with Matt Hunckler via his LinkedIn account. The early days of the tech startup craze would have you believe that Silicon Valley was not only the place to be, it was the only place to be. Or maybe Boston or New York City, but those were all the acceptable choices. As time went on, Seattle, Austin, and Boulder became part of the conversation. But what about Indianapolis, Nashville, and Pittsburgh?Truth is, there are vibrant startup communities all over the place. Not to mention the increasing numbers of seven figure small businesses that operate outside of the venture capital circus all together.Matt Hunckler has been working tirelessly for years making the case that the middle of America amounts to an undervalued asset, rich in markets, new business ideas, and budding entrepreneurs. His company Powderkeg brings entrepreneurs between the coasts together to find the resources they need to grow and thrive.Matt joins us this week to discuss Powerkeg’s mission. We also talk about how the pandemic is accelerating the idea of “everywhere is a startup hub,” and how Powderkeg quickly pivoted from live events to virtual value for its members out of obvious necessity.***If you’re about to start something up for yourself, or even pivot your existing business, you’ll want to take our free audio course Next Level 7. In our first episode under the new name, we interview CEO and Founder of Powderkeg, Matt Hunckler, about his passion for entrepreneurship and what his company is doing to match people with the right jobs and companies.
There’s another Hunckler building community in Indianapolis? This week we chat with Matt Hunckler about the entrepreneurial career that led him to accidentally start Powderkeg. Matt, brother to alumni Josie Hunckler of Rabble Coffee, spent his youth designing buildings, desirous of being an architect. While visiting friends at IU during his freshman year at Purdue, Matt would drop-in to the #1 rated entrepreneurship school in the country where he learned how concepts like accounting and finance were the building blocks of a business. As you might expect, Matt transferred to IU, where he started his first business after listening to alumni Scott Hill's presentation about his experience as an entrepreneur. After graduation and while in the Orr Fellowship, he started a group called Verge for entrepreneurs in the tech space to get feedback on their projects. It wasn’t his intention for it to grow, but it’s now a comprehensive, curated platform to connect the right people to the right culture in tech. Specifically, in areas that do not have a dense population of talent. Take a sip of your Hotel Tango whiskey as we learn about how vital culture match is to employee retention, about the growing tech community and industry, and the struggles of growing a lifestyle business. When you're in a business or nonprofit or just in your house, you'll often notice that emotions are kind of like the flu. They can be easy to catch. When your friend is angry because someone is being a punk on Facebook, you often get angry, too. When your kid is sad, you can get sad. Emotions from others often seep into us, especially in a workplace. Let's say everyone is super excited at a writing conference. Are you going to get super excited, too? Probably. It's all about mirror neurons, emotional intelligence, and biomimicry. Put simply, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and control our own emotions and the emotions of other people. Matt Hunckler for Forbes Part of emotional intelligence is understanding that we often adopt or mimic the expressions, behavior and emotion of those we spend a great deal of time with. Those bonds can help us or hurt us. Research from University of Oklahoma and University of Texas at Austin shows that when individuals dislike the same people or find a common dislike of something in general, all of a sudden those individuals have a bond that easily turns into a friendship because it’s a connection. What’s the life lesson in this? Take a minute and reflect, asking yourself: What types of emotion do I give off and how does that affect others I interact with such as my family, roommates, team mates, colleagues, etc.? How easily do I let others effect my emotions? Do I even know it is happening? Check out the Emotional Contagion Scale to see how vulnerable you are. Are the people in my social networks the type of people I really want to surround myself with? Are there actions or changes I need to make? Jodi Schulz for Michigan State University When it comes to writing, figure out how you can use the contagion of emotion to shift your main character's (or other's) world view and actions. Our characters are not static things and just like real people, they should be impacted (and impact) those around them. WRITING TiP OF THE POD: When you write, remember that relationships and characters are about connections and those around them impact their growth and emotions. DOG TIP FOR LIFE If emotions are contagious, pick your pack wisely. Don't hang around with the growling jerks. Hang around with the dogs who wag their tails and keep you happy. SHOUT OUT! Very few entrepreneurs in the world can say that they started their first business when they were a wee young lad – for Matt Hunckler, founder of Verge, he started his first business in high school! First, a bit about Vergehq.com. It's basically Silicon Valley's neighbor to the East, er – Midwest. More specifically, Verge is the largest platform in the Midwest for software entrepreneurs, developers and business investors. It's growing like wildfire! There are over 3,000 active members in many cities and Matt has his sites set on more than doubling the cities that are still “unlocked” in terms of having Verge presences. Okay, back to Matt. So that high-school business? It gave Matt the Fever BIG TIME – the fever to be an entrepreneur that is. Not bad for a guy who started his post-college career selling vacuums door-to-door. Verge is actually Matt's third start up, and he's still quite young (you'd never guess he has three start ups under his belt, look at his picture!). Listen in today to learn about what motivates Matt and how he's building an amazing tribe in Verge. Don't forget to subscribe and rate The Intrepid Entrepreneur on iTunes! Also, make sure to visit www.livinguber.com to learn more about the show and Kristin herself.
Matt Hunckler ( @hunckler), one of the people behind Verge, formally the Indianapolis Hackers and Founders meetup group, touches on how media and in person events are used to bring people together to share and grow ideas. While this conversation is not in the agriculture industry, Matt offers some community building approaches that easily can be used by those in ag. Click Play button below to listen to audio on line.
